Messages about antibiotic resistance in different newspaper genres

Poorer people are more likely to use antibiotics; inappropriate antibiotic use causes resistance, and health campaigns attempt to change behaviour through education. However, fuelled by the media, the public think antibiotic resistance is outside their control. Differences in the attribution of blame for antibiotic resistance in two genres of UK newspapers, targeting distinct socioeconomic groups, were examined using a mixed methods approach. Firstly, depiction of blame was categorised as either external to the lay public (outside their control) or internal (lay person accountable) and subjected to a chi-square test. Secondly, using critical discourse analysis, we examined the portrayal of the main agents through newspaper language. Data from 597 articles (307 broadsheets) analysed revealed a significant association between newspaper genre and attribution of blame for antibiotic resistance. While both newspaper types blamed antibiotic resistance predominantly on factors external to the lay public, broadsheets were more likely to acknowledge internal factors than tabloids. Tabloids provided a more skewed representation, exposing readers to inaccurate explanations about antibiotic resistance. They highlighted ineptitude in health professionals, victimising patients and blaming others, while broadsheets used less emotive language. Pharmacists should take special care to communicate the importance of appropriate antibiotic use against this backdrop of distortion.

“There’s something very familiar about all this”: generic play and performance in the Back to the Future trilogy (Robert Zemeckis, 1985, 1989, 1990)

The Back to the Future Trilogy incorporates several different generic elements, including aspects of the fifties teen movie, science fiction, comedy and the western. These different modes playfully intertwine with each other creating a complex world of repetitions, echoes and modulations. This essay seeks to interrogate the construction of generic elements and the play between them through a close analysis of a repeated performance. Genre is signalled through various strategies employed within the construction of mise-en-scène, a significant portion of this, as I would like to argue, is transmitted through performance. The material detail of a performance – incorporating gesture, movement, voice, and even surrounding elements such as costume – as well as the way it its presented within a film is key to the establishment, invocation and coherence of genre. Furthermore, attention to the complexity of performance details, particularly in the manner in which they reverberate across texts, demonstrates the intricacy of genre and its inherent mutability. The Back to the Future trilogy represents a specific interest in the flexibility of genre. Within each film, and especially across all three, aspects of various genres are interlaced through both visual and narrative detail, thus constructing a dense layer of references both within and without the texts. To explore this patterning in more detail I will interrogate the contribution of performance to generic play through close analysis of Thomas F. Wilson’s performance of Biff/Griff/Burford Tannen and his central encounter with Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) in each film. These moments take place in a fifties diner, a 1980s retro diner and a saloon respectively, each space contributing the similarities and differences in each repetition. Close attention to Wilson’s performance of each related character, which contains both modulations and repetitions used specifically to place each film’s central generic theme, demonstrates how embedded the play between genres and their flexibility is within the trilogy.

Filmmusikens betydelse : En receptionsstudie om hur musik i film bidrar till förståelse

This essay is about film music and how people react in a study where the music and picture comes from two different genres that both has unique conventions, of how the “standard” music ought to be composed. The purpose of this essay is mainly to try and get an understanding of film music’s importance in the movies dramatic structure, and how people react when the conventions of music is broken and two genres are combined into one.The questions that are to be answered in this essay are: *how could music as a tool change the character of a film? *How does the participants, of this inquire, experience the film depending on what music they hear? *And what is it that the participants think that the music brings to the movies narration?The method of this survey is based on a number of participants that have responded on questions of how they experienced the movie, both with music and without. This study has shown that when music and picture, which comes from different genres, interact with each other it tends to create comical features and a sense of that the music has an advantage in terms of the genre that people feel that the film has.

Autobiografia em movie maker: ferramenta para o letramento do deficiente intelectual em uma turma inclusiva

Este estudo tem como objetivo compreender como a construção da autobiografia no software movie maker, em um contexto de inovação pedagógica, pode favorecer o letramento de crianças com e sem deficiência intelectual. Dessa maneira, a construção do gênero textual autobiografia, com uso da tecnologia, suscitou uma série de fatos no processo de letramento nos possibilitando: o reconhecimento das particularidades que legitimam esta ação pedagógica como inovadora; a verificação das etapas do letramento nas crianças com e sem deficiência intelectual; a identificação dos nutrientes cognitivos presentes nesta ação pedagógica; a análise dos artefatos que resultaram deste projeto. Neste estudo foi utilizada uma metodologia qualitativa de inspiração etnográfica através de um estudo de caso. Foi analisado primeiramente o paradigma educacional que dá suporte às ações da Escola Municipal Engenheiro Henoch Coutinho de Melo, que foi o local de realização desta pesquisa, confrontando-o com o paradigma que mobiliza a ação pedagógica da professora Maria de Fátima Trigueiro. O caráter inovador deste estudo revela-se no momento em que a prática pedagógica para o letramento dos alunos com e sem deficiência intelectual desta turma rompe com a forma de organização do currículo da rede municipal do Recife e do Projeto Político Pedagógico da citada escola, que apesar de ser um currículo com suporte teórico construtivista está organizado de maneira tradicional. A construção de uma autobiografia surge do olhar atento da professora sobre os temas de interesse presentes nos diálogos dos alunos e do interesse destes em utilizar a tecnologia para suas aprendizagens. O letramento desenvolve-se em um clima de diversão e descobertas, com o entrosamento entre a escola e a família, intensificando o significado da escrita e da leitura como via de acesso para uma construção de identidade. Ao final desse estudo constatou-se que os estudantes com e sem deficiência intelectual avançaram qualitativamente no processo de letramento através da construção da autobiografia no software movie maker.

This paper is part of a larger project. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the movie Girl With a Pearl Earring (2003) by Peter Webber using the theoretical perspective of dialogue from the Bakhtin Circle, Medved, Volochinov. The multidisciplinary and interartistic potential of cinema is considered in this paper when the linguistic organization and the translinguistic elements in the corpus are focused on and understood as an example of cinema genre as discussed in the Russian Circle. The study of the ways of incorporation of different genericities by cinema, illustrated by the dialogues between the pictorial genre, the novel and the movies contribute to the recognition of the cinema as a genre that is composed by the incorporation of other genres. The construction of the cinematographic work in analysis will be regarded in its architectonic (form, content and style) and in the activity field in which it circulates.
