In this thesis work, a strength analysis is made for a boat trailer. The studied trailer structure is manufactured from Ruukki’s structural steel S420. The main focus in this work is in the trailer’s frame. The investigation process consists two main stages. These stages are strain gage measurements and finite elements analysis. Strain gage measurements were performed to the current boat trailer in February 2015. Static durability and fatigue life of the trailer are analyzed with finite element analysis and with two different materials. These materials are the current trailer material Ruukki’s structural steel S420 and new option material high strength precision tube Form 800. The main target by using high strength steel in a trailer is weight reduction. The applied fatigue analysis methods are effective notch stress and structural hot spot stress approaches. The target of these strength analyses is to determine if it is reasonable to change the trailer material to high strength steel. The static strengths of the S420 and Form 800 trailers is sufficient. The fatigue strength of the Form 800 trailer is considerably lower than the fatigue strength of the S420 trailer. For future research, the effect of hot dip galvanization to the high strength steel has to be investigated. The effect of hot dip galvanization to the trailer is investigated by laboratory tests that are not included in this thesis.

Aim and design: To evaluate family-based health counseling for young children, and to study the significance of adding parental self-care or the training of professionals to the programs. The effectiveness and acceptability of the programs were evaluated by comparing two new programs with an earlier one. Subjects and methods: The study was carried out in Vantaa, which was divided into three study areas. The subjects consisted of children born in 2008, particularly fi rstborn children, while children born in 2006 formed the historical control. The fi rst of the new programs emphasized oral hygiene and use of fl uoride, and the second program focused on proper diet and use of xylitol. The main outcome measure was mutansstreptococci (MS) in the dental biofi lm of two-year-olds, and the opinions of parents and dental professionals were evaluated using questionnaires. Results: The programs found wide acceptance among dental professionals. There were no group-related differences found in the MS scores of the two-year-olds. However, all groups combined, father’s advanced level of education and child’s proper use of xylitol were associated with negative MS scores. In the opinion of parents, the oral healthcare guidance at least somewhat met their expectations. Conclusions: The present fi ndings suggest that providing training and support for professionals in health education is important. The addition of parental self-care to supplement programs aimed at young children does not improve the program, although it may improve parental readiness to change their own health habits. Counseling for families might be best carried out through a routine patient-centered program.

In this Master’s Thesis work the rheological properties of different polysaccharide gels have been studied. The results of this study are used as a starting point for further investigations of potential applications. In order to understand rheological behavior of studied materials, the commercial hydrocolloids such as sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, xanthan gum and guar gum were used as reference and comparison material for rheological studies. As a part the rheological research the development and implementation of proper measurement methods for studied materials were carried out. In the literature review, short introductions of studied materials and application areas of rheological modifiers are summarized. In addition, basic rheological concepts and key fundamentals are explained. In the experimental part the focus was on the rheological characterization of aqueous suspensions of studied materials. Especially, gel strength and solution stability were investigated. The rheological measurements included both rotational and oscillatory measurements in different conditions, where several chemical and physical properties were measured with Anton Paar MCR302 dynamic rotational rheometer. Studied polysaccharide gels can be clearly defined to be shear thinning and thixotropic materials. They have strong gel forming properties even at low concentrations, which explains the superior thickening behavior for some of the samples. Along with rheological characterization of selected materials the factors behind different phenomena were investigated. To reveal value and potential use of polysaccharide gels the influence of various factors such as concentration, temperature and ionic strength were determined. The measurements showed a clear difference between studied materials under investigated external parameters.

ABSTRACT Towards a contextual understanding of B2B salespeople’s selling competencies − an exploratory study among purchasing decision-makers of internationally-oriented technology firms The characteristics of modern selling can be classified as follows: customer retention and loyalty targets, database and knowledge management, customer relationship management, marketing activities, problem solving and system selling, and satisfying needs and creating value. For salespeople to be successful in this environment, they need a wide range of competencies. Salespeople’s selling skills are well documented in seller side literature through quantitative methods, but the knowledge, skills and competencies from the buyer’s perspective are under-researched. The existing research on selling competencies should be broadened and updated through a qualitative research perspective due to the dynamic nature and the contextual dependence of selling competencies. The purpose of the study is to increase understanding of the professional salesperson’s selling competencies from the industrial purchasing decision- makers’ viewpoint within the relationship selling context. In this study, competencies are defined as sales-related knowledge and skills. The scope of the study includes goods, materials and services managed by a company’s purchasing function and used by an organization on a daily basis. The abductive approach and ‘systematic combining’ have been applied as a research strategy. In this research, data were generated through semi- structured, person-to-person interviews and open-ended questions. The study was conducted among purchasing decision-makers in the technology industry in Finland. The branches consisted of the electronics and electro-technical industries and the mechanical engineering and metals industries. A total of 30 companies and one purchasing decision-maker from each company were purposively chosen for the sampling. The sample covers different company sizes based on their revenues, their differing structures – varying from public to family companies –that represent domestic and international ownerships. Before analyzing the data, they were organized by the purchasing orientations of the buyers: the buying, procurement or supply management orientation. Thematic analysis was chosen as the analysis method. After analyzing the data, the results were contrasted with the theory. There was a continuous interaction between the empirical data and the theory. Based on the findings, a total of 19 major knowledge and skills were identified from the buyers’ perspective. The specific knowledge and skills from the viewpoint of customers’ prevalent purchasing orientations were divided into two categories, generic and contextual. The generic knowledge and skills apply to all purchasing orientations, and the contextual knowledge and skills depend on customers’ prevalent purchasing orientations. Generic knowledge and skills relate to price setting, negotiation, communication and interaction skills, while contextual ones relate to knowledge brokering, ability to present solutions and relationship skills. Buying-oriented buyers value salespeople who are ‘action oriented experts, however at a bit of an arm’s length’, procurement buyers value salespeople who are ‘experts deeply dedicated to the customer and fostering the relationship’ and supply management buyers value salespeople who are ‘corporate-oriented experts’. In addition, the buyer’s perceptions on knowledge and selling skills differ from the seller’s ones. The buyer side emphasizes managing the subject matter, consisting of the expertise, understanding the customers’ business and needs, creating a customized solution and creating value, reliability and an ability to build long-term relationships, while the seller side emphasizes communica- tion, interaction and salesmanship skills. The study integrates the selling skills of the current three-component model− technical knowledge, salesmanship skills, interpersonal skills− and relationship skills and purchasing orientations, into a selling competency model. The findings deepen and update the content of these knowledges and skills in the B2B setting and create new insights into them from the buyer’s perspective, and thus the study increases contextual understanding of selling competencies. It generates new knowledge of the salesperson’s competencies for the relationship selling and personal selling and sales management literature. It also adds knowledge of the buying orientations to the buying behavior literature. The findings challenge sales management to perceive salespeople’s selling skills both from a contingency and competence perspective. The study has several managerial implications: it increases understanding of what the critical selling knowledge and skills from the buyer’s point of view are, understanding of how salespeople effectively implement the relationship marketing concept, sales management’s knowledge of how to manage the sales process more effectively and efficiently, and the knowledge of how sales management should develop a salesperson’s selling competencies when managing and developing the sales force. This study explores swords with ferrous inlays found in Finland and dating from the late Iron Age, ca. 700–1200 AD. These swords reflect profound changes not only in styles and fashion but also in the technology of hilts and blades. This study explores how many of these kinds of swords are known from Finland, how they were made and where, what their status was in Late Iron Age Finland, and where the Finnish finds stand in accordance with other areas of Europe. The various methods included measuring of the finds and statistics. The main method of revealing the inlaid marks was radiography due to its non-destructive nature. In cases where inlays were visible without radiography, their details were inspected via microscopy. To study the materials and manufacture of inlaid swords, a sample of them was metallographically analysed to determine the forging technologies and nature of used materials. Furthermore, the manufacture was also studied with experimental approaches. As a result, a catalogue of 151 swords with ferrous inlays was created. This number is relatively high compared with other European countries, although systematic studies have been conducted in only some countries. The inlaid motifs were classified into five distinct categories to help the classification. To summarize, almost every documented inlaid sword was unique in some respect including measurements, inlaid motifs and materials of blades and inlays. Technological variation was also present, some blades being poorer and some of higher quality in spite of the inlaid motifs. Misspelt inscriptions as well as letter-like marks were common in Finland and also in Scandinavia. Furthermore, the provenance of iron and steel used in some blades hints at Scandinavian ores. The above observations, along with the experimental results indicating the existence of multiple alternative techniques of inlaying, suggest that these swords were manufactured locally in Scandinavia, most likely in imitation of Continental European models. Inlaid swords were valued partly for their assumed functionality in combat, as evidenced by damage on some examined blades, or they were valued for their inlays, which could have had fashionable or symbolical meanings bound to local beliefs.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää bakteerien kiinnittymistä ja bakteeribiofilmin muodostumista implanttimateriaalien pinnalla. Monoliittisen zirkonian ja lasikeramien käyttö implanttikruunujen materiaaleina kasvaa jatkuvasti. Zirkoniaa käytetään myös abutmenttien materiaalina esteettisillä alueilla. Tällä hetkellä on vain vähän tutkimustietoa näiden implanttikruunumateriaalien sekä implanttikruunujen sementoimiseen käytetyn sementin pinnalla tapahtuvasta bakteeriadheesiosta ja biofilmin muodostumisesta. Bakteerien adheesiota ja biofilmin muodistumista tutkittiin neljän eri materiaalin pinnalla. Tutkimuksessa käytetyt materiaalit olivat: (1) Litiumdisilikaatti (LDS; IPS e.max CAD, Ivoclar Vivadent,kontrolli), (2) Kokonaan stabiloitu zirkonia (FSZ; Prettau Anterior, Zirkonzahn), (3) Osittain stabiloitu zirkonia (PSZ; Katana, Noritake), ja (4) Kaksoiskovetteinen sementti (DCC; Multilink hybrid abutment cement, Ivoclar Vivadent). Kaikki tutkimuksessa käytetyt materiaalit valmisteltiin ja kiillotettiin valmistajien ohjeiden mukaisesti Tutkittavat pinnat inkuboitiin Streptococcus mutans-suspensiossa +37°C:ssä asteessa. Bakteeriadheesiotestissä inkubointiaika oli 30 minuuttia ja biofilmitestissä vastaava aika oli 24 tuntia. Materiaalien pintoja tarkasteltiin myös elektronimikroskooppia käyttäen. Tutkimuksessa todettiin, että bakteeriadheesiossa oli eroja eri materiaalien välillä. Biofilmin. muodostumisessa ei todettu tilastollisesti merkittäviä eroja tutkittavien materiaalien välillä.

Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tutkia kansainvälisesti toimivan konserniyrityksen yhden liiketoimintayksikön materiaalinhallinnan ja siihen liittyvien toimintojen nykytilaa. Lisäksi tutkimuksessa selvitetään, miten materiaalinhallintaa varastoinnin osalta voidaan kehittää suoratoimitusmallin periaatetta hyödyntäen ja mitä säästöpotentiaaleja tämän kaltaiseen malliin liittyy kohdeorganisaation toimintaympäristö huomioiden. Tutkimuksen teoriaosion lähdeaineisto koostuu materiaalinhallinnan perusteosten lisäksi tieteellisistä artikkelijulkaisuista. Käytännönosuuden aineisto pohjautuu kohdeorganisaatiossa käytyihin keskusteluihin, tuotannonohjausjärjestelmästä saatuun tietoon ja omiin havaintoihin. Nykytilanteen analyysissä selvisi, että kohdeorganisaation varastointiin liittyy tehostamispotentiaalia erityisesti tila-, käsittely, ja työkustannusten osalta. Kohdeorganisaation varastoinnin tehostamista tutkittiin suoratoimitusmallin avulla. Suoratoimitusmallissa materiaalit eivät kierrä kohdeorganisaation pitämän välivaraston kautta, vaan ne toimitetaan toimittajan tiloista suoraan tuotannon välittömään tarpeeseen. Mallin avulla voidaan jakaa toimittajien kanssa sellaisia resursseja, joita molempien toiminta vaatii ja täten vapauttaa nykyistä varastointitilaa ja keventää sisäisen logistiikan kuormaa. Suoratoimitusmallin liittyvien hyötyjen kannalta on oleellista, että malliin valitaan sellaiset materiaalit, jotka sisältävät eniten potentiaalia niin säästö- kuin soveltuvuusnäkökulmasta. Valittujen kriteerien avulla kohdeorganisaation hankkimista materiaaleista löydettiin joukko materiaaleja, joiden avulla pystyttiin osoittamaan, että suoratoimitusmallin avulla on mahdollista saavuttaa kustannussäätöjä varastoinnin osalta.

Carbon materials are found versatile and applicable in wide range of applications. During the recent years research of carbon materials has focussed on the search of environmentally friendly, sustainable, renewable and low-cost starting material sources as well as simple cost-efficient synthesis techniques. As an alternative synthesis technique in the production of carbon materials hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) has shown a great potential. Depending on the application HTC can be performed as such or as a pretreatment technique. This technique allows synthesis of carbon materials i.e. hydrochars in closed vessel in the presence of water and self-generated pressure at relatively low temperatures (180-250 ˚C). As in many applications well developed porosity and heteroatom distribution are in a key role. Therefore in this study different techniques e.g. varying feedstock, templating and post-treatment in order to introduce these properties to the hydrochars structure were performed. Simple monosaccharides i.e. fructose or glucose and more complex compounds such as cellulose and sludge were performed as starting materials. Addition of secondary precursor e.g. thiophenecarboxaldehyde and ovalbumin was successfully exploited in order to alter heteroatom content. It was shown that well-developed porosity (SBET 550 m2/g) can be achieved via one-pot approach (i.e. exploitation of salt mixture) without conventionally used post-carbonization step. Nitrogen-enriched hydrochars indicated significant Pb(II) and Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 240 mg/g and 68 mg/g respectively. Sulphur addition into carbon network was not found to have enhancing effect on the adsorption of methylene blue or change acidity of the carbon material. However, these hydrochars were found to remove 99.9 % methylene blue and adsorption efficiency of these hydrochars remained over 90 % even after regeneration. In addition to water treatment application N-rich high temperature treated carbon materials were proven applicable as electrocatalyst and electrocatalyst support. Hydrothermal carbonization was shown to be workable technique for the production of carbon materials with variable physico-chemical properties and therefore hydrochars could be applied in several different applications e.g. as alternative low-cost adsorbent for pollutant removal from water.

Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena on kehittää uudentyyppinen menetelmä erään kuitumateriaalin muovaukseen ja testata sen toimivuutta. Työ aloitetaan kirjallisuustutkimuksena koskien olemassa olevia kuitumateriaalin muovausmenetelmiä ja kuitumateriaalin materiaaliominaisuuksia. Kehitettävä menetelmä eroaa olemassa olevista kuitumateriaalin muovausmenetelmistä monivaiheisuudellaan. Menetelmässä monivaiheinen muovaus tapahtuu yhdellä iskulla, joka eroaa myös olemassa olevista metallin muovausmenetelmistä merkittävästi. Muovauksessa on tarkoitus hyödyntää kuitumateriaalin paikallista venymää. Kehitettävään muovausmenetelmään soveltuva työkalu ideoidaan ja suunnitellaan hyödyntäen nykyaikaisia CAD-ohjelmistoja. Suunniteltu työkalu myös valmistettiin ja sen todettiin toimivan suunnitellusti: muovaus on monivaiheista, eikä aihio pääse luistamaan pidättimien alla. Työkalulla suoritetaan myös koeajoja eri kuitumateriaaleilla, joilla selvitetään eri prosessiparametrien ja materiaaliominaisuuksien vaikutus muovauksen onnistumiseen. Koeajetut materiaalit soveltuvat kehitetylle menetelmälle heikosti, mutta työkalun jatkokehityksellä ja eri materiaaleilla voi onnistunut muovaus olla mahdollista.
