Earlier school text book studies (eg Tainio and Teräs 2010, Blumberg 2007; Ohlander 2010) have shown that women are underrepresented in school books, both in illustrations and texts, and the genders are represented stereotyped. The study will examine how gender in seen on pre-school education materials. The aim of this study is to determine what kind of representations, discourses and the subject positions of the gender are presented in pre-school materials. This study utilizes a feminist research method. The theoretical starting points are the social constructivist, poststructuralist theory and gender studies. The concept of gender as a social construct. The research used content analysis as well as discource analysis and deconstructive reading. The material was used four different publishers, WSOY, Tammi, Otava and Lasten Keskus preschool integrated material packages, which contain the child's exercise book or booklet, and teacher's guide. The analysis examined the quantity of gender-specific images and gendered words and phrases, and representations of gender, subject position, and discourses, and what linguistic means had been used for representation of masculinity and femininity. Based on the results there were on average more masculine characters and words as feminine in the illustrations and stories of pre-school materials. Feminine and masculine characters representations emphasized traditional gender stereotypes, especially in external characteristics and clothing. Genders had the highest available, with the subject position of stereotypes with reduced mobility, but also other kinds of subject position was observed. The data found in the following gender discources: difference discource, diversity discource and similarity discource. The highest number occurred in the difference and diversity discources. However, there were differences between the different materials. In some materials there were more diverse gender representations and other materials highlighted the differences between genders. Overall, the genders were represented stereotypically in the pre-school materials.

This study explores labour relations between domestic workers and employers in India. It is based on interviews with both employers and workers, and ethnographically oriented field work in Jaipur, carried out in 2004-2007. Combining development studies with gender studies, labour studies, and childhood studies, it asks how labour relations between domestic workers and employers are formed in Jaipur, and how female domestic workers trajectories are created. Focusing on female part-time maids and live-in work arrangements, the study analyses children s work in the context of overall work force, not in isolation from it. Drawing on feminist Marxism, domestic labour relations are seen as an arena of struggle. The study takes an empirical approach, showing class through empiria and shows how paid domestic work is structured and stratified through intersecting hierarchies of class, caste, gender, age, ethnicity and religion. The importance of class in domestic labour relations is reiterated, but that of caste, so often downplayed by employers, is also emphasized. Domestic workers are crucial to the functioning of middle and upper middle class households, but their function is not just utilitarian. Through them working women and housewives are able to maintain purity and reproduce class disctinctions, both between poor and middle classes and lower and upper middle classes. Despite commodification of work relations, traditional elements of service relationships have been retained, particularly through maternalist practices such as gift giving, creating a peculiar blend of traditional and market practices. Whilst employers of part-time workers purchase services in a segmented market from a range of workers for specific, traditional live-in workers are also hired to serve employers round the clock. Employers and workers grudgingly acknowledged their dependence on one another, employers seeking various strategies to manage fear of servant crime, such as the hiring of children or not employing live-in workers in dual-earning households. Paid domestic work carries a heavy stigma and provide no entry to other jobs. It is transmitted from mothers to daughters and working girls were often the main income providers in their families. The diversity of working conditions is analysed through a continuum of vulnerability, generic live-in workers, particularly children and unmarried young women with no close family in Jaipur, being the most vulnerable and experienced part-time workers the least vulnerable. Whilst terms of employment are negotiated informally and individually, some informal standards regarding salary and days off existed for maids. However, employers maintain that workings conditions are a matter of individual, moral choice. Their reluctance to view their role as that of employers and the workers as their employees is one of the main stumbling blocks in the way of improved working conditions. The main purpose of this study was to provide a full account of the Christian social work carried out at the Tampere City Mission (TCM) as well as the Missions sphere of operations from the Second World War to the early 1970s, comprising a period of significant change. The study consists of charting the processes of change and connections within the activities of the TCM and how examining these were linked to the general tendencies of the period, in lay work, social work, professionalization and the representation of gender. The positioning of the activities is described on the basis of these tendencies. The main sources for the study were the archives of the Mission, for example the minutes of meetings, correspondences as well as annual reports, and the archives of its partners, such as the City of Tampere, the Evangelical Lutheran parishes of Tampere and the State Welfare Administration. The archives of the Helsinki, Turku and Stockholm Missions supplied comparison reference and other material. In particular, social welfare and Christian social work technical journals of were used as printed sources. The principal method used was the genetic method of historiology. The research subject was also evaluated from the point of view of third sector research in addition to that of professionalization studies and gender studies. By the beginning of the research period, the TCM had turned more and more dedicatedly into a multipurpose social service organization maintaining social services such as old people s homes and children´s homes. This development continued, even though new areas of activity emerged and older ones fell into disuse. Social innovations sprang up, marriage counseling being one of them. On the national level, the TCM pioneered the provision of sheltered industrial work for intellectually disabled persons as well as housing services for them. As new activities were initiated, they overlapped with the established ones, and the TCM handed some of its child protection functions over to the municipality, in accordance with the current adaptation theory. The use of its own property to produce ever-changing social services may be the reason why the association s work continued on with vitality. Functional networks and political aid in the field of social services also bolstered the association. As in other Nordic countries, nonprofit organizations served as partners rather than competitors, with the State establishing institutional welfare arrangements. In the 1960s the municipal takeover of social services impacted the TCM activities. Rules for government subsidies and municipal allowances were not well established; hence these funds were not easily available, making improvements difficult. The TCM was a community in which women had a relatively strong position and an opportunity to make a difference. Female staff were reasonably equal to men, and women worked as heads of a several institutions. Care work employed a number of men, which went against the traditional segregation of labour between the sexes. Resumen: Existen varias posibilidades a la hora de analizar las distintas corrientes en la historiografía reciente del peronismo; sin embargo, en líneas generales, se puede decir que a lo largo de los años el foco del debate se ha trasladado de los sociólogos a los historiadores, de las perspectivas macro a las micro y de lo político a lo social. El énfasis inicial acerca de la supuesta ruptura y anomalía que representaba el peronismo ha prácticamente desaparecido a favor de la continuidad y de su contextualización en el proceso histórico argentino. La imagen homogénea ha sido reemplazada por un cuadro complejo y heterogéneo. Desde la perspectiva de los estudios de género, las investigaciones sobre el peronismo han producido no solamente trabajos sobre el Partido Peronista Femenino, sino otros que también han explorado temas como la reproducción, la maternidad, la infancia y las dinámicas familiares. Asimismo, la dimensión nacional, basada en la experiencia de la Capital Federal y sus alrededores, es decir la óptica metropolitana, ha dado lugar a distintas miradas provinciales, regionales y locales. Con cierta exageración se podría hablar de un desplazamiento de los grandes relatos y los modelos teóricos a los estudios de pequeña escala de la vida cotidiana bajo el peronismo.

Esta tese entrelaça o repertório de marchinhas carnavalescas e os estudos de gênero, vislumbrando identificar, nas composições de Lamartine Babo, João de Barro e Ari Barroso, visões sociais sobre as mulheres do Rio de Janeiro no decurso dos anos de 1930 e 1940. Os debates sobre as relações de gênero estão longe de serem esgotadas, sobretudo, quando se propõe lançar um olhar psicossocial sobre tal temática por meio da análise de discurso das letras de músicas de Carnaval. O trabalho afasta-se da concepção da categoria mulher como um lugar comum e sinônimo de identidade feminina. Este posicionamento reflexivo entende o conceito de gênero como uma construção agenciada no mundo social. Concomitantemente ao processo de produção e circulação de diferentes discursos sobre os papéis sociais de homens e mulheres, os compositores de marchinhas inseriram a linguagem carnavalesca como mais uma possibilidade de abordar o tema das relações de gênero no contexto sócio-histórico investigado. Nesses termos, este estudo explicita a pretensão de inserir as letras desse gênero musical como um lugar privilegiado para o entendimento de uma parcela de um pensamento social brasileiro referente ao estatuto de ser homem ou mulher no país. A tese busca desvelar as visões sobre mulheres nas letras de marchinhas carnavalescas a partir de das reflexões bakhtinianas sobre a Psicologia, as quais, continuamente, permitiram estabelecer uma relação estreita entre o contexto sócio-histórico do Rio de Janeiro nas décadas de 1930 e 1940 e as mensagens sociais contidas nas marchinhas carnavalescas desse período.

Neste trabalho refletimos acerca das relações entre sexo, gênero, ciência e feminismo, a partir da análise da produção contemporânea de um grupo de pesquisadoras que se denominam como neurofeministas e que, desde 2010, se articulam em uma rede internacional chamada NeuroGenderings. O objetivo da NeuroGenderings é trazer uma perspectiva feminista crítica aos estudos recentes sobre o cérebro, sobretudo aqueles que buscam por diferenças entre homens e mulheres. As neurofeministas estão engajadas em produzir uma neurociência situada, assumidamente feminista, que não deixe de lado a materialidade dos corpos e especialmente do cérebro , ao mesmo tempo em que se preocupam politicamente com as hierarquias de gênero. Procuram, portanto, produzir uma neurociência empírica, capaz de produzir o que chamam de zonas de proximidade entre moléculas e paisagens políticas. Além disso, pretendem combater o neurossexismo, isto é, estereótipos em relação à masculinidade e feminilidade que estariam presentes em grande parte da produção neurocientífica, bem como em sua divulgação para o público mais amplo. Assim, mapeamos a rede NeuroGenderings a partir de duas estratégias metodológicas: a leitura e análise da produção bibliográfica das neurofeministas (tanto as publicações oficiais da rede, como publicações individuais das pesquisadoras) e a observação da reunião e conferência mais recente da NeuroGenderings, que ocorreu na cidade de Lausanne, na Suíça, em 2014. O neurofeminismo nos oferece relevante material analítico para refletirmos acerca dos ideais de cientificidade em disputa na ideia de uma neurociência feminista, levando em conta a crença de que ciência e política pertenceriam a esferas separadas e imiscíveis, e que neutralidade seria característica obrigatória à boa prática científica. Além disso, notamos aproximações entre o trabalho das neurofeministas e os trabalhos de um importante grupo de estudiosas do campo da ciência e gênero, chamadas de feministas biólogas. As feministas biólogas inspiram a produção neurocientífica, principalmente no que diz respeito à perspectiva antidualista, que rejeita a oposição entre sexo e gênero, natureza e cultura, encarando-os como entrelaçados e inseparáveis. Entretanto, embora o entrelaçamento entre sexo e gênero seja consenso entre as neurofeministas, não há acordos sobre a forma como esse entrelaçamento deve ser pensado em termos neurocientíficos. Assim, a discussão em torno do conceito de plasticidade cerebral evidencia alguns desses dissensos, bem como tensões entre ciências humanas e neurociência dentro da NeuroGenderings, rede marcada pela interdisciplinaridade. Essas tensões, porém, não inviabilizam o projeto neurofeminista de pensar o cérebro como um objeto compartilhado de conhecimento.

Tekst stanowi krytyczną rekapitulację refleksji filmoznawczej prowadzonej w Czechach i Słowacji a dotykającej problematyki tzw. ženskej otázki (kwestii kobiecej). Myśl feministyczna i genderowa pojawiła się w refleksji publicznej i naukowej dopiero po Aksamitnej Rewolucji, napotykając na wstrzemięźliwą i zdystansowaną reakcję środowisk naukowych i twórczych. Dotychczasowa niezbyt rozbudowana refleksja nad kwestiami kobiecymi w kinie czeskim i słowackim, reprezentuje wczesny etap feminizmu akademickiego. Czesko-słowackie women’s studies skupiają się na gromadzeniu wiedzy dotyczącej historii, kultury, życia społecznego i politycznego kobiet. W centrum swojego dyskursu sytuują analizę wizerunków kobiecych, przede wszystkim we wczesnym kinie, rozważania nad kategorią kobiecości, jej specyfiką i przeobrażeniami dokonującymi się w procesie historycznym. Tymczasem w dokonaniach kinematografii Czech i Słowacji coraz większą rolę odgrywają kobiety reżyserki. Współczesne kino kobiet jest tu wyraźnie dostrzegalnym w swojej specyfice jakościowej i ilościowej zjawiskiem artystycznym, który na razie pozostaje obszarem nieeksplorowanym w czesko-słowackiej myśli filmoznawczej ukierunkowanej feministycznie i genderowo.

My thesis analyses female figures in Italian crime fiction since 1980, from narratological, sociological and gender-studies perspectives. It considers the narrative structure of the giallo and the noir, taking into account the difficulties, particularly in Italy, of establishing what noir fiction is and if/how it is possible to frame it in a specific narrative scheme. This discourse connects to the extraordinary success of Italian giallo and noir fiction over the past fifteen-twenty years. In this scenario, I examine the place of female writers in relation to this phenomenon, especially since the 1980s: in terms of the level of visibility/acceptance of their work, in a narrative space traditionally considered as a male territory, and with regard to their writings, which introduce different narrative perspectives. Specifically, I consider selected texts by leading female Italian writers, in which female elements (writers/characters) become destabilizing factor both on the narrative level, by undermining the schemes of ‘formulaic’ fiction, and on the political one, through their implicit potential (as women) for disrupting the rigid models inherited from processes of social conditioning and from political structures. In terms of gender identities, such texts offer scope to question conventional social constructions of the subject: by empowering the female narrative voice and by embodying it in characters (investigators/killers) traditionally personified by male figures. These texts offer themselves as a critical space where, potentially, readers can rethink static gendered relationships and stereotypical symbolical categories.

Confronting the rapidly increasing, worldwide reliance on biometric technologies to surveil, manage, and police human beings, my dissertation Informatic Opacity: Biometric Facial Recognition and the Aesthetics and Politics of Defacement charts a series of queer, feminist, and anti-racist concepts and artworks that favor opacity as a means of political struggle against surveillance and capture technologies in the 21st century. Utilizing biometric facial recognition as a paradigmatic example, I argue that today's surveillance requires persons to be informatically visible in order to control them, and such visibility relies upon the production of technical standardizations of identification to operate globally, which most vehemently impact non- normative, minoritarian populations. Thus, as biometric technologies turn exposures of the face into sites of governance, activists and artists strive to make the face biometrically illegible and refuse the political recognition biometrics promises through acts of masking, escape, and imperceptibility. Although I specifically describe tactics of making the face unrecognizable as "defacement," I broadly theorize refusals to visually cohere to digital surveillance and capture technologies' gaze as "informatic opacity," an aesthetic-political theory and practice of anti- normativity at a global, technical scale whose goal is maintaining the autonomous determination of alterity and difference by evading the quantification, standardization, and regulation of identity imposed by biometrics and the state. My dissertation also features two artworks: Facial Weaponization Suite, a series of masks and public actions, and Face Cages, a critical, dystopic installation that investigates the abstract violence of biometric facial diagramming and analysis. I develop an interdisciplinary, practice-based method that pulls from contemporary art and aesthetic theory, media theory and surveillance studies, political and continental philosophy, queer and feminist theory, transgender studies, postcolonial theory, and critical race studies.

Jung as a Writer traces a relationship between Jung and literature by analysing his texts using the methodology of literary theory. This investigation serves to illuminate the literary nature of Jung’s writing in order to shed new light on his psychology and its relationship with literature as a cultural practice. Jung employed literary devices throughout his writing, including direct and indirect argument, anecdote, fantasy, myth, epic, textual analysis and metaphor. Susan Rowland examines Jung’s use of literary techniques in several of his works, including Anima and Animus, On the Nature of the Psyche, Psychology and Alchemy and Synchronicity and describes Jung’s need for literature in order to capture in writing his ideas about the unconscious. Jung as a Writer succeeds in demonstrating Jung’s contribution to literary and cultural theory in autobiography, gender studies, postmodernism, feminism, deconstruction and hermeneutics and concludes by giving a new culturally-orientated Jungian criticism. The application of literary theory to Jung’s works provides a new perspective on Jungian Psychology that will be of interest to anyone involved in the study of Jung, Psychoanalysis, literary theory and cultural studies. This article examines the travel writings and medical work in India of Lady Hariot Dufferin, Vicereine of India between 1884 and 1888. Lady Dufferin accompanied her husband, the Viceroy Lord Dufferin, through various social and political engagements in India, and carved her own niche in colonial and postcolonial history as a pioneer in the medical training of women in India. The article examines her travel writings on India and explores the nature of her complicity in the Raj, as well as the gendered nature of the separate public role she created for herself in relation to her 'zenana work' in providing medical care for the women of India. The author suggests that, through her work, Lady Dufferin challenges and extends the theoretical paradigms of postcolonialist and feminist critiques of empire.

This project investigates the English-language life writing of diasporic Iranian Jewish women. It examines how these women have differentially imagined their diasporic lives and travels, and how they have in turn been imagined and accepted or rejected by their audiences. In the first chapter, I use “home” as a lens for understanding three distinct life writing texts, showing how the authors write about what it means to have a home and to be at home in contrasting and even contradictory ways. I show how, despite potential hegemonic readings that perpetuate unequal relationships and a normative definition of the ideal home, the texts are open to multiple contestatory readings that create spaces for new formulations and understandings. In the second chapter, I look more closely at the intersections between trauma stories and the life writing of Iranian Jewish women, and I argue that readers use life writing texts about trauma to support an egocentric reconstruction of American democracy and dominance. I also show how a critical frame for understanding trauma can yield interpretations that highlight, rather than ignore, relationships of power and privilege. In the final chapter of the thesis, I present a case study of two online reading groups, and I show that communal reading environments, though they participate in dominant discourses, are also spaces where resistance and subversion can develop.
