El impacto ambiental directo de la construcción naval, que se refiere a la construcción, mantenimiento y reparación de buques, no es de ninguna manera pequeño. La construcción de buques depende de un gran número de procesos que por sí mismos constituyen un riesgo significativo de daño medio ambiental en el entorno de los astilleros y que conducen a emisiones significativas de gases de efecto invernadero. Además, la construcción naval utiliza algunos materiales que no sólo puede llevar a graves consecuencias para el daño ambiental durante su producción y su uso en el proceso de construcción de la nave, sino también posteriormente durante la reparación de buques, el funcionamiento y las actividades de reciclaje. (OECD 2010) El impacto ambiental directo de la construcción naval constituye de por sí, un desafío importante para la industria. Pero este impacto no queda limitado a su entorno inmediato, aunque la Construcción Naval no es directamente responsable de la repercusión en el medio ambiente de la operación y el reciclaje de buques comerciales, si es una parte integral de estas actividades. (OECD 2010) En esta tesis se sugiere que el sector de la construcción naval puede y debe aceptar sus responsabilidades ambientales no solo en el entorno del astillero; también en la operación de los buques, sus productos; tomando conciencia, a través de un enfoque de ciclo de vida, del desempeño ambiental de la industria en su conjunto. Es necesario intensificar esfuerzos a medida que el impacto ambiental de la industria es cada vez más visible en el dominio público, en pro de un crecimiento verde que permita aumentar la capacidad de actividad o producción económica al tiempo que reduce o elimina, los impactos ambientales. Este será un imperativo para cualquier futura actividad industrial y exigirá naturalmente conocimiento ambiental intrincado perteneciente a todos los procesos asociados. Esta tesis - aprovechando como valiosa fuente de información los desarrollos y resultados del proyecto europeo: “Eco_REFITEC”. FP7-CP-266268, coordinado por el autor de esta Tesis, en nombre de la Fundación Centro Tecnológico SOERMAR - tiene como primer objetivo Investigar la interpretación del concepto de Construcción Naval y Transporte Marítimo sostenible así como las oportunidades y dificultades de aplicación en el sector de la Construcción y reparación Naval. Ello para crear o aumentar el entendimiento de la interpretación del concepto de transporte marítimo sostenible y la experiencia de su aplicación en particular en los astilleros de nuevas construcciones y reparación. Pretende también contribuir a una mejor comprensión de la industria Marítima y su impacto en relación con el cambio climático, y ayudar en la identificación de áreas para la mejora del desempeño ambiental más allá de las operaciones propias de los astilleros; arrojando luz sobre cómo puede contribuir la construcción naval en la mejora de la eficiencia y en la reducción de emisiones de CO2 en el transporte marítimo. Se espera con este enfoque ayudar a que la Industria de Construcción Naval vaya abandonando su perspectiva tradicional de solo mirar a sus propias actividades para adoptar una visión más amplia tomando conciencia en cuanto a cómo sus decisiones pueden afectar posteriormente las actividades aguas abajo, y sus impactos en el medio ambiente, el cambio climático y el crecimiento verde. Si bien cada capítulo de la tesis posee su temática propia y una sistemática específica, a su vez retoma desde una nueva perspectiva cuestiones importantes abordadas en otros capítulos. Esto ocurre especialmente con algunos ejes que atraviesan toda la tesis. Por ejemplo: la íntima relación entre el transporte marítimo y el sector de construcción naval, la responsabilidad de la política internacional y local, la invitación a buscar nuevos modos de construir el futuro del sector a través de la consideración de los impactos ambientales, económicos y sociales a lo largo de ciclo de vida completo de productos y servicios. La necesidad de una responsabilidad social corporativa. Estos temas no se cierran ni terminan, sino que son constantemente replanteados tratando de enriquecerlos. ABSTRACT The direct environmental impact of shipbuilding, which refers to construction, maintenance and repair of vessels, is by no means small. Shipbuilding depends on a large number of processes which by themselves constitute significant risks of damage to the shipyards‘ surrounding environment and which lead to significant emissions of greenhouse gases. In addition, shipbuilding uses some materials which not only may carry serious implications for environmental harm during their production and usage in the ship construction process, but also subsequently during ship repairing, operation, and recycling activities. (OECD 2010) The direct environmental impact of shipbuilding constitutes a major challenge for the industry. But this impact is not limited on their immediate surroundings, but while not being directly responsible for the impact on the environment from the operation and final recycling of commercial ships, shipbuilding is an integral part of these activities. (OECD 2010) With this in mind, this thesis is suggested that the shipbuilding industry can and must take up their environmental responsibilities not only on their immediate surroundings, also on the ships operation, becoming aware through a “life cycle” approach to ships, the environmental performance of the industry as a whole. As the environmental impact of the industry is becoming increasingly visible in the public domain much more effort is required for the sake of “green growth” which implies the ability to increase economic activity or output while lowering, or eliminating, environmental impacts. This will be an imperative for any future industrial activity and will naturally demand intricate environmental knowledge pertaining to all associated processes. This thesis making use as a valuable source of information of the developments and results of an European FP7-collaborative project called "Eco_REFITEC, coordinated by the author of this thesis on behalf of the Foundation Center Technology SOERMAR, has as its primary objective to investigate the interpretation of a sustainable Shipbuilding and Maritime Transport concept and the challenges and opportunities involved in applying for the Shipbuilding and ship repair Sector. It is done to improve the current understanding regarding sustainable shipping and to show the application experience in shipbuilding and ship repair shipyards. Assuming that sustainability is more than just an act but a process, this academic work it also aims to contribute to a much better understanding of the maritime industry and its impact with respect to climate change, and help in identifying areas for better environmental performance beyond the shipyard's own operations; shedding light on how shipbuilding can contribute in improving efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions in shipping. It is my hope that this thesis can help the Shipbuilding Industry to abandon its traditional perspective where each simply looks at its own activities to take a broader view becoming aware as to how their decisions may further affect downstream activities and their impacts on the environment, climate change and green growth. Although each chapter will have its own subject and specific approach, it will also take up and re-examine important questions previously dealt with. This is particularly the case with a number of themes which will reappear as the thesis unfolds. As example I will point to the intimate relationship between the shipping and shipbuilding industry, the responsibility of international and local policy, the call to seek other ways of building the future of the sector through the consideration of the environmental, economic and social impacts over the full life cycle of the products and services, the need for a corporate social responsibility. These questions will not be dealt with once and for all, but reframed and enriched again and again.

Assim, o educador ambiental apresenta conhecimentos sobre as questões ambientais e habilidade ao lidar com pessoas dos mais diferentes contextos. Nesta perspectiva, o agente social da terceira idade desenvolve os atributos necessários para atuação enquanto educador ambiental, uma vez que trabalha o saber ambiental necessário às ações de intervenção e consolida sua formação pessoal. Este trabalho objetiva analisar a percepção ambiental dos alunos da universidade da terceira idade ao iniciar o curso, dentro do módulo de educação ambiental. Verificar se os conteúdos e metodologias utilizadas na disciplina de educação ambiental contribuem para a formação do agente social da terceira idade e para sua atuação como educador ambiental. O corpo teórico desta pesquisa foi composto pelo conceito de complexidade de Edgar Morin, as idéias de meio ambiente de Enrique Leff, a concepção de educação de Paulo Freire e a compreensão de educação ambiental de Marcos Reigota. Como instrumentos metodológicos, foram utilizados técnicas de análise de documentos, questionários e grupo focal. A apresentação e interpretação dos dados coletados sugerem a viabilidade da atuação do indivíduo da terceira idade como educador ambiental nas ações de intervenção em sua realidade local.

This thesis proposes environmental education as a strategy for the inclusion of sustainability in the academic education of higher level. The dentistry course has been the object of study, which is justified by the recognition of the need for reflection on environmental issues in the dental academia, initially based on professional experience of the author as a dental surgeon. The aim of this study is to investigate the scientific production of dentistry and its content related to environmental issues, in addition to expanding discussions and reflections on the need to insert environmental education as academic content. With the specific purpose of verifying the amount and analyze the content of scientific articles involving issues related to sustainability in dentistry, Chapter 01 presents research in leading journals portals available on the internet. Works were surveyed where sustainability and related issues were present and placed in a theoretical framework that analyzes the dental service inclusion in the dominant economic model. These procedures are intended to prove the hypothesis that the dental profession does not produce significant scientific content that relates the profession to the environment and sustainability. A literature review was conducted with the statement of dentistry changes from its origins to the front position to the dominant development model and exemplification of the deleterious effects of this model on the environment. In addition, there was a scientific research in journals portals available on the internet and investigated the amount and content of scientific articles involving issues related to sustainability in dentistry. Chapter 02 has the specific purpose of providing content to expand discussions and reflections on the need to insert environmental education in undergraduate courses in dentistry, such as insertion strategy into a new development model guided by sustainability. In this, students questionnaires were given the 8th dentistry course of the period the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), to be understood environmental perception of learners and were obtained grants for proof of the thesis that environmental education applied dentistry has the potential to make people aware and willing to act practicing and propagating sustainability in their conduct. The overall results indicate little scientific production, as the research and work that relates to dentistry to sustainability and the issues related to the environment have not significantly been present in the syllabus of the undergraduate courses in dentistry, despite the interest shown by survey respondents When such issues are addressed. In this context, it is proposed fostering actions to environmental education, so that dental professionals are engaged in the construction of a new development model based on sustainability, as despite the environmental theme seems to be little explored in the academic and scientific world of dentistry, there interest from students and great potential multiplier for appropriate environmental behavior. After proving the hypothesis that the environment-related content are poorly explored in the academic and scientific world of dentistry, the main conclusions were recognizing the importance of environmental education as an interdisciplinary tool for environmental thematic approach in undergraduate courses dentistry, in addition to implementing this new pedagogical proposal in the professional practice of dentists, given their potential multiplier for environmental knowledge.

Background: The relationship between mental health and climate change are poorly understood. Participatory methods represent ethical, feasible, and culturally-appropriate approaches to engage community members for mental health promotion in the context of climate change. Aim: Photovoice, a community-based participatory research methodology uses images as a tool to deconstruct problems by posing meaningful questions in a community to find actionable solutions. This community-enhancing technique was used to elicit experiences of climate change among women in rural Nepal and the association of climate change with mental health. Subjects and methods: Mixed-methods, including in-depth interviews and self-report questionnaires, were used to evaluate the experience of 10 women participating in photovoice. Quantitative tools included Nepali versions of Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and a resilience scale. Results: In qualitative interviews after photovoice, women reported climate change adaptation and behavior change strategies including environmental knowledge-sharing, group mobilization, and increased hygiene practices. Women also reported beneficial effects for mental health. The mean BDI score prior to photovoice was 23.20 (SD=9.00) and two weeks after completion of photovoice, the mean BDI score was 7.40 (SD=7.93), paired t-test = 8.02, p<.001, n=10. Conclusion: Photovoice, as a participatory method, has potential to inform resources, adaptive strategies and potential interventions to for climate change and mental health.

Debido a la necesidad de implementar metodologías efectivas para la formación de ciudadanos con conciencia ambiental, se planteó esta investigación con el objetivo de evaluar el efecto de la enseñanza interdisciplinaria en la Educación Ambiental, sobre los conocimientos, valores y actitudes ambientales, de estudiantes de sexto curso básico de un establecimiento municipal de la ciudad de Los Ángeles, en Chile. Se relaciona la Educación Ambiental con las asignaturas Lenguaje-Comunicación y Matemática. Los instrumentos de medición, validados por un comité de expertos y sometidos a un análisis de fiabilidad. Se aplicaron antes y después de la intervención, permitiendo así medir el grado de cambio en conocimientos, valores y actitudes ambientales en los distintos tratamientos, los cuales fueron analizados estadísticamente por medio de tests no paramétricos. Los resultados indican que un grado mayor de interdisciplinariedad genera mejores conocimientos, valores y actitudes ambientales, por lo que se recomienda implementar estrategias interdisciplinarias en el aula al momento de realizar Educación Ambiental.

Plantea lo que debe ser una identidad de las ciencias sociales desde visiones novedosas de abordar la temática ambiental. Parte de la premisa de que el saber ambiental va más allá del diagnóstico, es decir, va a la preposición, a la generación de un conocimiento nuevo que mixtura los conocimientos populares con los científicos para permitir un cambio real en la relación de las personas con otras manifestaciones de vida. Abstract The article presents what it should be an identity for Social Sciences from very novel approaches towards the environmental subject-matter. The starting pont of the article is the premise that the environmental knowledge goes far beyond the diagnostics i.e., it goes to the preposition, to the production of new knowledge that mixes the knowledhe of the people with the scientific knowledge to allow a real change in the realtionship between people and other life manifestations.

Purpose – In recent years, knowledge-based urban development (KBUD) has introduced as a new strategic development approach for the regeneration of industrial cities. It aims to create a knowledge city consists of planning strategies, IT networks and infrastructures that achieved through supporting the continuous creation, sharing, evaluation, renewal and update of knowledge. Improving urban amenities and ecosystem services by creating sustainable urban environment is one of the fundamental components for KBUD. In this context, environmental assessment plays an important role in adjusting urban environment and economic development towards a sustainable way. The purpose of this paper is to present the role of assessment tools for environmental decision making process of knowledge cities. Design/methodology/approach – The paper proposes a new assessment tool to figure a template of a decision support system which will enable to evaluate the possible environmental impacts in an existing and future urban context. The paper presents the methodology of the proposed model named ‘ASSURE’ which consists of four main phases. Originality/value –The proposed model provides a useful guidance to evaluate the urban development and its environmental impacts to achieve sustainable knowledge-based urban futures. Practical implications – The proposed model will be an innovative approach to provide the resilience and function of urban natural systems secure against the environmental changes while maintaining the economic development of cities.

The quality of environmental decisions are gauged according to the management objectives of a conservation project. Management objectives are generally about maximising some quantifiable measure of system benefit, for instance population growth rate. They can also be defined in terms of learning about the system in question, in such a case actions would be chosen that maximise knowledge gain, for instance in experimental management sites. Learning about a system can also take place when managing practically. The adaptive management framework (Walters 1986) formally acknowledges this fact by evaluating learning in terms of how it will improve management of the system and therefore future system benefit. This is taken into account when ranking actions using stochastic dynamic programming (SDP). However, the benefits of any management action lie on a spectrum from pure system benefit, when there is nothing to be learned about the system, to pure knowledge gain. The current adaptive management framework does not permit management objectives to evaluate actions over the full range of this spectrum. By evaluating knowledge gain in units distinct to future system benefit this whole spectrum of management objectives can be unlocked. This paper outlines six decision making policies that differ across the spectrum of pure system benefit through to pure learning. The extensions to adaptive management presented allow specification of the relative importance of learning compared to system benefit in management objectives. Such an extension means practitioners can be more specific in the construction of conservation project objectives and be able to create policies for experimental management sites in the same framework as practical management sites.

This research is part of the Socioeconomic Research & Monitoring Program for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS), which was initiated in 1998. In 1995-96, a baseline study on the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of proposed FKNMS management strategies and regulations of commercial fishers, dive operators and on selected environmental group members was conducted by researchers at the University of Florida and the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Atmospheric and Marine Science (RSMAS). The baseline study was funded by the U.S. Man and the Biosphere Program, and components of the study were published by Florida Sea Grant and in several peer reviewed journals. The study was accepted into the Socioeconomic Research & Monitoring Program at a workshop to design the program in 1998, and workshop participants recommended that the study be replicated every ten years. The 10-year replication was conducted in 2004-05 (commercial fishers) 2006 (dive operators) and 2007 (environmental group members) by the same researchers at RSMAS, while the University of Florida researchers were replaced by Thomas J. Murray & Associates, Inc., which conducted the commercial fishing panels in the FKNMS. The 10-year replication study was funded by NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program. The study not only makes 10-year comparisons in the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of FKNMS management strategies and regulations, but it also establishes new baselines for future monitoring efforts. Things change, and following the principles of “adaptive management”, management has responded with changes in the management plan strategies and regulations. Some of the management strategies and regulations that were being proposed at the time of the baseline 1995-96 study were changed before the management plan and regulations went into effect in July 1997. This was especially true for the main focus of the study which was the various types of marine zones in the draft and final zoning action plan. Some of the zones proposed were changed significantly and subsequently new zones have been created. This study includes 10-year comparisons of socioeconomic/demographic profiles of each user group; sources and usefulness of information; knowledge of purposes of FKNMS zones; perceived beneficiaries of the FKNMS zones; views on FKNMS processes to develop management strategies and regulations; views on FKNMS zone outcomes; views on FKNMS performance; and general support for FKNMS. In addition to new baseline information on FKNMS zones, new baseline information was developed for spatial use, investment and costs-and-earnings for commercial fishers and dive operators, and views on resource conditions for all three user groups. Statistical tests were done to detect significant changes in both the distribution of responses to questions and changes in mean scores for items replicated over the 10-year period. Environmental conditions play an important role in the transmission of malaria; therefore, regulating these conditions can help to reduce disease burden. Environmental management practices for disease control can be implemented at the community level to complement other malaria control methods. This study assesses current knowledge and practices related to mosquito ecology and environmental management for malaria control in a rural, agricultural region of Tanzania. Household surveys were conducted with 408 randomly selected respondents from 10 villages and qualitative data were collected through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews. Results show that respondents are well aware of the links between mosquitoes, the environment, and malaria. Most respondents stated that cleaning the environment around the home, clearing vegetation around the home, or draining stagnant water can reduce mosquito populations, and 63% of respondents reported performing at least one of these techniques to protect themselves from malaria. It is clear that many respondents believe that these environmental management practices are effective malaria control methods, but the actual efficacy of these techniques for controlling populations of vectors or reducing malaria prevalence in the varying ecological habitats in Mvomero is unknown. Further research should be conducted to determine the effects of different environmental management practices on both mosquito populations and malaria transmission in this region, and increased participation in effective techniques should be promoted.
