Phyrobilisomes (PBS) are the major light-harvesting, protein-pigment complexes in cyanobacteria and red algae. PBS absorb and transfer light energy to photosystem (PS) II as well as PS I, and the distribution of light energy from PBS to the two photosystems is regulated by light conditions through a mechanism known as state transitions. In this study the quantum efficiency of excitation energy transfer from PBS to PS I in the cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 was determined, and the results showed that energy transfer from PBS to PS I is extremely efficient. The results further demonstrated that energy transfer from PBS to PS I occurred directly and that efficient energy transfer was dependent upon the allophycocyanin-B alpha subunit, ApcD. In the absence of ApcD, cells were unable to perform state transitions and were trapped in state 1. Action spectra showed that light energy transfer from PBS to PS I was severely impaired in the absence of ApcD. An apcD mutant grew more slowly than the wild type in light preferentially absorbed by phyrobiliproteins and was more sensitive to high light intensity. On the other hand, a mutant lacking ApcF, which is required for efficient energy transfer from PBS to PS II, showed greater resistance to high light treatment. Therefore, state transitions in cyanobacteria have two roles: (1) they regulate light energy distribution between the two photosystems; and (2) they help to protect cells from the effects of light energy excess at high light intensities. (1 1 (2) over bar 0) GaN/InGaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) were grown on (1 (2) over bar 0 2) sapphire by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. The excitation-intensity-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of these samples was measured, and no peak shift was observed. This phenomenon was attributed to the absence of piezoelectric field (PEF) along the growth orientation of the (1 1 (2) over bar 0) face MQWs. Our experimental results showed that PEF was the main reason causing peak blueshift in excitation-intensity-dependent PL spectrum of (0 0 0 1) InGaN/GaN NIQWs. It was expected that fabricating (1 1 (2) over bar 0) face nitride device should be a method to avoid PEF and get low-threshold, high-quantum-efficiency and stable-emission-wavelength light-emission devices. We have investigated the temperature and excitation power dependence of photoluminescence properties of InAs self-assembled quantum dots grown between two Al0.5Ga0.5As quantum wells. The temperature evolutions of the lower-and higher-energy transition in the photoluminescence spectra have been observed. The striking result is that a higher-energy peak appears at 105 K and its relative intensity increases with temperature in the 105-291 K range. We demonstrate that the higher-energy peak corresponds to the excited-state transition involving the bound-electron state of quantum dots and the two-dimensional hole continuum of wetting layer. At higher temperature, the carrier transition associated with the wetting layer dominates the photoluminescence spectra. A thermalization model is given to explain the process of hole thermal transfer between wetting layer and quantum dots. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A liquid laser medium with a lifetime of 492 mu s and a fluorescent quantum efficiency of 52.5% has been presented by stably dispersing dimethyl dichorosilane-modified Nd2O3 nanoparticles in dimethylsulfoxide. Its optical properties and mechanism were investigated and explained by fluorescence resonance energy transfer theory. The calculation result shows that the quenching of Nd-III F-4(3/2)-> I-4(11/2) transition via O-H vibrational excitation can be eventually neglected. The main reason is that the silane-coupling agent molecules remove the -OH groups on Nd2O3 nanoparticles and form a protective out layer. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Cross sections of electron- loss in H( 1s)+ H( 1s) collisions and total collisional destruction of H( 2s) in H( 1s) + H( 2s) collisions are calculated by four- body classical- trajectory Monte Carlo ( CTMC) method and compared with previous theoretical and experimental data over the energy range of 4 - 100 keV. For the former a good agreement is obtained within di. erent four- body CTMC calculations, and for the incident energy Ep > 10 keV, comparison with the experimental data shows a better agreement than the results calculated by the impact parameter approximation. For the latter, our theory predicts the correct experimental behaviour, and the discrepancies between our results and experimental ones are less than 30%. Based on the successive comparison with experiments, the cross sections for excitation to H( 2p), single- and double- ionization and H- formation in H( 2s)+ H( 2s) collisions are calculated in the energy range of 4 - 100 keV for the. rst time, and compared with those in H( 1s)+ H( 1s) and H( 1s)+ H( 2s) collisions.

The single charge transfer process in He-3(2+)+He-4 collisions is investigated using the quantum-mechanical molecular-orbital close-coupling method, in which the adiabatic potentials and radial couplings are calculated by using the ab initio multireference single- and double-excitation configuration interaction methods. The differential cross sections for the single charge transfer are presented at the laboratorial energies E = 6 keV and 10 keV for the projectile He-3(2+). Comparison with the existing data shows that the present results are better in agreement with the experimental measurements than other calculations in the dominant small angle scattering, which is attributed to the accurate calculations of the adiabatic potentials and the radial couplings.

We have studied the excitation and dissociation processes of the molecule W(CO)(6) in collisions with low kinetic energy (3 keV) protons, monocharged fluorine, and chlorine ions using double charge transfer spectroscopy. By analyzing the kinetic energy loss of the projectile anions, we measured the excitation energy distribution of the produced transient dications W(CO)(6)(2+). By coincidence measurements between the anions and the stable or fragments of W(CO)(6)(2+), we determined the energy distribution for each dissociation channel. Based on the experimental data, the emission of the first CO was tentatively attributed to a nonstatistical direct dissociation process and the emission of the second or more CO ligands was attributed to the statistical dissociation processes. The dissociation energies for the successive breaking of the W-CO bond were estimated using a cascade model. The ratio between charge separation and evaporation (by the loss of CO+ and CO, respectively) channels was estimated to be 6% in the case of Cl+ impact. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. Bulk and nano-materials Sr2CeO4 were prepared by solid-state reaction and sol-gel technique, respectively. Photoluminescence shows that luminescence has the characteristic of a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (CT) emission. Compared with bulk Sr2CeO4, the nano-material exhibits stronger emission intensity, longer decay time, and higher CT excitation energy. Three CT excitation peaks were observed in both bulk and nano samples.

Lu2O3:Yb3+/Er3+/Tm3+ nanocrystals have been successfully synthesized by a solvothermal process followed by a subsequent heat treatment at 800 degrees C. Powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, upconversion photoluminescence spectra, and kinetic decay were used to characterize the samples. Under single-wavelength diode laser excitation of 980 nm, the bright blue emissions of Lu2O3:Yb3+, Tm3+ nanocrystals near 477 and 490 nm were observed due to the (1)G(4)-> H-3(6) transition of Tm3+. The bright green UC emissions of Lu2O3:Er3+ nanocrystals appeared near 540 and 565 nm were observed and assigned to the H-2(11/2)-> I-4(15/2) and S-4(3/2)-> I-4(15/2) transitions, respectively, of Er3+. The ratio of the intensity of green luminescence to that of red luminescence decreases with an increase of concentration of Yb3+ in Lu2O3:Er3+ nanocrystals.

Mn2+-doped xBaO center dot 6Al(2)O(3) and BaMgAl10O17 phosphors were prepared by solid-state reaction. The investigation of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) excitation spectra of these phosphors exhibits that 0.82BaO center dot 6Al(2)O(3):Mn2+ and BaMgAl10O17:Mn2+ have a stronger absorption than BaO center dot 6Al(2)O(3):Mn2+ at about 147 nm. The emission spectra under VUV excitation demonstrated that 0.82BaOBa center dot 6Al(2)O(3):Mn2+ and BaMgAl10O17:Mn2+ have a higher luminescent intensity than BaO center dot 6Al(2)O(3):Mn2+. The lifetime analysis indicates that they have similar decay times, indicating that 0.82BaOBa center dot 6Al(2)O(3):Mn2+ and BaMgAl10O17:Mn2+ can be used as luminescent materials for plasma display panels. We observed that the critical concentration of the Mn2+ ions by host excitation is different from that of Mn2+ direct excitation, revealing a different mechanism of energy transfer. The critical distance was calculated. A model was suggested to explain the process of the energy transfer from the host to the Mn2+ ions.

Ca2Gd8(SiO4)(6)O-2: A(A = Ph2+, Tm3+) phosphors were prepared through the sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microseopy(SEM) and photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize the resulting phosphors. The results of XRD indicate that the phosphors crystallized completely at 1000 degreesC. SEM study reveals that the average grain size is 300 similar to 1000 nm. In Ca2Gd8(SiO4)(6)O-2: Tm3+ phosphors, the Tm3+ shows its characteristic blue emission at 456 nm (D-1(2)-F-3(4)) upon excitation into its H-3(6)-D-1(2)(361 nm), with an optimum doping concentration of 1 mol% of Gd3+ in the host lattices. In Ca2Gd8(SiO4)(6)O-2: Pb2+, Tm3+ phosphors, excitation into the Ph2+ at 266 nm (S-1(0)-P-3(1)) yields the emissions of Gd3+ at 311 nm (P-6-S-8) and Tm3+ at 367 nm (D-1(2)-H-3(6)) and 456 our (D-1(2)-F-3(4)), indicating that energy transfer processes of Pb2+-Gd3+ and Ph2+-Tm3+ have occur-red in the host lattices.

Organically modified silica xerogels (OMSX) and Eu3+ (Tb3+)-doped OMSX were prepared by the reaction of (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APS) with 3-isocyanatepropyltriethoxysilane (ICPTES) followed by the subsequent hydrolysis and condensation in the presence of Eu3+ (Tb3+) via sol-gel method, which were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, fluorescence excitation and emission spectra. The as-formed OMSX shows a strong blue emission with the maximum excitation and emission wavelength at 351 and 420 nm, respectively. Due to the spectral overlap between the emission band of OMSX and f-f absorption lines of Eu3+ and Tb3+ in the UV-blue region, an energy transfer was observed from OMSX host to Eu3+ and Tb3+ in OMSX/Eu3+ and OMSX/Tb3+, respectively. Excitation at 350-360 nm resulted in a very weak emission around 420 nm from OMSX host and strong emission of Eu3+ and Tb3+ in OMSX/Eu3+ and OMSX/Tb3+, respectively. The emission spectra of Eu3+ and Tb3+ consist of D-5(0)-F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) and D-5(4)-F-7(J) (J = 6, 5, 4, 3), respectively. Furthermore, the predicted structure of OMSX/Eu3+ and OMSX/Tb3+ is presented.

Y2O3:Sm and Gd2O3:Sm powder phosphors were prepared by carbonate coprecipitation method. The purified crystalline phases of Y2O3:Sm and Gd2O3:SM were obtained at 600degreesC, and the crystallinity increases with increase in annealing temperature. Both samples contain aggregated phosphor particles. An energy transfer (ET) from Y2O3 and Gd2O3 hosts to sm(3+) has been observed, and the ET efficiency in the latter is higher than that in the former because an energy migration process like Gd3+-(Gd3+)(n)-Sm3+ has occurred in the latter. Furthermore, an upconversion luminescence from the (4)G(5/2) level of Sm3+ has been observed in both Y2O3 and Gd2O3 under the excitation of 936 nm infrared, whose mechanisms are proposed. Both the up and downconversion emission intensities of Sm3+ in Gd2O3 are stronger than those in Y2O3.

A blue organic light-emitting device based on an emissive layer of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (HOXD), which exhibits excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), was presented. The device had a luminance efficiency of 0.8 cd/A and a maximum brightness of 870 cd/m(2). Our studies indicate that some EL may originate from the triplet excitation state of the enol form of HOXD.

The luminescence properties of Ce3+ and Tb3+ in Y3Si2O8Cl have been investigated. The Ce3+ excitation bands in the region from 220 to 360 run are attributed to the transitions from 4f level to the crystal-field splitting levels of 5d.
