An analysis of the experimental conditions under which low-frequency (70-150 kHz) Alfven eigertmodes (AE) are excited during the monster sawtooth in Joint European Torus [F Romanelli et al, Proceedings of the 22nd IAEA Fusion Energy Conference, Geneva, Switzerland, 2008] is presented for the specific case of a discharge with ion cyclotron heating (5 MW) Using a simplified AE model for modes excited at the Alfven wave continuum maximum with geodesic corrections taken into account, the temporal evolution of the value of the safety factor q(0) at the magnetic axis is determined We describe a new scheme to determine the time variation of q(0) that works under conditions in which other standard diagnostics, such as the motional Stark effect do not give reliable results such as during a monster sawtooth [doi 10 1063/1 3494212]

Using a quasitoroidal set of coordinates with coaxial circular magnetic surfaces, Vlasov equation is solved for collisionless plasmas in drift approach and a perpendicular dielectric tensor is found for large aspect ratio tokamaks in a low frequency band. Taking into account plasma rotation and charge separation parallel electric field, it is found that an ion geodesic effect deform Alfveacuten wave continuum producing continuum minimum at the rational magnetic surfaces, which depends on the plasma rotation and poloidal mode numbers. In kinetic approach, the ion thermal motion defines the geodesic effect but the mode frequency also depends on electron temperature. A geodesic ion Alfveacuten mode predicted below the continuum minimum has a small Landau damping in plasmas with Maxwell distribution but the plasma rotation may drive instability.

Taking into account q-profile and charge separation parallel electric field, it is found that the Alfven wave continuum is deformed by ion geodesic effects producing continuum minimum at the rational magnetic surfaces. Low frequency geodesic ion induced Alfven waves are found below the continuum minimum where collisionless damping has a gap for Maxwell distribution. In kinetic approach, the ion thermal motion defines the geodesic effect but the mode frequency is strongly corrected due to parallel motion of electrons.

Background: Pain reactivity may reflect underlying mechanisms of constitutional aspects of temperament. Aim: To examine whether the neonatal biobehavioral reactivity and recovery responses from pain and distress, as well as the gestational age, the illness severity and the amount of painful procedures undergone the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) stay, predict temperament later in toddlerhood, in vulnerable children born preterm. Study design: Prospective-longitudinal study. Subjects: Twenty-six preterm and very low birth weight infants followed from birth to toddlerhood. Outcome measures: Illness severity was assessed with the Clinical Risk Index for Babies (CRIB) score. The medical charts were reviewed prospectively for obtaining the amount of pain exposure in NICU. For assessing the behavioral and cardiac reactivity and recovery from pain and distress, the neonates were evaluated during routine blood collection in the NICU in the first 10 days of life. Pain and distress reactivity and recovery was measured using the Neonatal Facial Coding System score, the duration of crying. and the magnitude of average heart rate. At toddlerhood, mothers answered the Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire. Results: Higher biobehavioral reactivity to pain and distress predicted higher temperamental Negative Affect, above and beyond gestational age, illness severity and amount of pain exposure in NICU. However, we did not find a predictive relation between gestational age, CRIB score and number of painful procedures undergone NICU and toddler`s temperament. Conclusions: The findings highlight the relevance of the neonatal individual characteristics of reactivity for identifying more vulnerable infants for future problems in biobehavioral regulation. A evolução da tecnologia CMOS tem possibilitado uma maior densidade de integração de circuitos tornando possível o aumento da complexidade dos sistemas. No entanto, a integração de circuitos de gestão de potência continua ainda em estudo devido à dificuldade de integrar todos os componentes. Esta solução apresenta elevadas vantagens, especialmente em aplicações electrónicas portáteis alimentadas a baterias, onde a autonomia é das principais características. No âmbito dos conversores redutores existem várias topologias de circuitos que são estudadas na área de integração. Na categoria dos conversores lineares utiliza-se o LDO (Low Dropout Regulator), apresentando no entanto baixa eficiência para relações de conversão elevadas. Os conversores comutados são elaborados através do recurso a circuitos de comutação abrupta, em que a eficiência deste tipo de conversores não depende do rácio de transformação entre a tensão de entrada e a de saída. A diminuição física dos processos CMOS tem como consequência a redução da tensão máxima que os transístores suportam, impondo o estudo de soluções tolerantes a “altatensão”, com o intuito de manter compatibilidade com tensões superiores que existam na placa onde o circuito é incluído. Os sistemas de gestão de energia são os primeiros a acompanhar esta evolução, tendo de estar aptos a fornecer a tensão que os restantes circuitos requerem. Neste trabalho é abordada uma metodologia de projecto para conversores redutores CCCC comutados em tecnologia CMOS, tendo-se maximizado a frequência com vista à integração dos componentes de filtragem em circuito integrado. A metodologia incide sobre a optimização das perdas totais inerentes à comutação e condução, dos transístores de potência e respectivos circuitos auxiliares. É apresentada uma nova metodologia para o desenvolvimento de conversores tolerantes a “alta-tensão”.

Virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) are increasingly being used in various business scenarios and are important driving forces in technology development. However the usage of these technologies in the home environment is restricted due to several factors including lack of low-cost (from the client point of view) highperformance solutions. In this paper we present a general client/server rendering architecture based on Real-Time concepts, including support for a wide range of client platforms and applications. The idea of focusing on the real-time behaviour of all components involved in distributed IP-based VR scenarios is new and has not been addressed before, except for simple sub-solutions. This is considered as “the most significant problem with the IP environment” [1]. Thus, the most important contribution of this research will be the holistic approach, in which networking, end-systems and rendering aspects are integrated into a cost-effective infrastructure for building distributed real-time VR applications on IP-based networks.

Com o progresso da tecnologia aeronáutica, a deslocação de pessoas e bens tornou-se bastante acessível para variados pontos de mundo, com espaço de tempo muito reduzido. Um dos motores essenciais deste avanço, concernente à mobilidade, é o transporte aéreo e a sua evolução. Este tipo de transporte requer a máxima segurança, sendo que um único acidente pode gerar centenas de vítimas. Atendendo a estas condições, a qualidade dos pavimentos aeroportuários é de grande importância para a segurança da movimentação das aeronaves em solo. Mas, por razões económicas e por vezes de espaço, perspetivas de novas construções perdem viabilidade comparativamente a soluções de reabilitação. A posição geográfica do aeroporto de Ondjiva faz com que seja um importante ponto de passagem entre a África do Sul e a Namíbia e, prevê-se que o número de voos que se efetuam no aeroporto cresça, sendo que o país está numa fase de grande evolução. O presente trabalho visa o conhecimento do processo de dimensionamento para pavimentos aeroportuários e soluções de correção para anomalias que possam apresentar, aplicando-os ao aeroporto de Ondjiva, em Angola. Atualmente, o aeroporto revela um grande desgaste das pistas de táxi, inadaptabilidade das cabeceiras face às cargas estáticas a que são submetidas e, largura insuficiente da pista para a aeronave de projeto, ou aeronave crítica, atendendo ao regulamento da ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization). Para melhorar o conforto, a segurança e eficiência dos serviços aéreos, o dimensionamento do aeroporto deve obedecer aos princípios e regras da ICAO. Pretende-se também a modelação de uma solução de reforço para o pavimento existente, para que não seja necessário construir um aeroporto de raiz, minimizando custos. Após a realização do dimensionamento, foi estudada a sinalização horizontal e luminosa da pista, para que esteja em conformidade com as suas novas medidas.

Open innovation is a hot topic in innovation management. Its basic premise is open up the innovation process. The innovation process, in general sense, may be seen as the process of designing, developing and commercializing a novel product or service to improve the value added of a company. The development of Web 2.0 tools facilitates this kind of contributions, opening space to the emergence of crowdsourcing innovation initiatives. Crowdsourcing is a form of outsourcing not directed to other companies but to the crowd by means of an open call mostly through an Internet platform. Innovation intermediaries, in general sense, are organizations that work to enable innovation, that just act as brokers or agents between two or more parties. Usually, they are also engaged in other activities like inter-organizational networking and technology development and related activities. A crowdsourcing innovation intermediary is an organization that mediates the communication and relationship between the seekers – companies that aspire to solve some problem or to take advantage of any business opportunity – with a crowd that is prone to give ideas based on their knowledge, experience and wisdom. This paper identifies and analyses the functions to be performed by an intermediary of crowdsourcing innovation through grounded theory analyses from literature. The resulting model is presented and explained. The resulting model summarizes eight main functions that can be performed by a crowdsourcing process, namely, diagnoses, mediation, linking knowledge, community, evaluation, project management, intellectual property governance and marketing and support. These functions are associated with a learning cycle process which covers all the crowdsourcing activities that can be realized by the broker.

The paper first presents a 10-year outlook for major Asian dairy markets (China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam) based on a world dairy model. Then, using Heien and Wessells’s technique, dairy product consumption growth is decomposed into contributions generated by income growth, population growth, price change, and urbanization and these contributions are quantified. Using the world dairy model, the paper also analyzes the impacts of alternative assumptions of higher income levels and technology development in Asia on Asian dairy consumptions and world dairy prices. The outlook projects that Asian dairy consumption will continue to grow strongly in the next decade. The consumption decomposition suggests that the growth would be mostly driven by income and population growth and, as a result, would raise world dairy prices. The simulation results show that technology improvement in Asian countries would dampen world dairy prices and meanwhile boost domestic dairy consumption.

The current means and methods of verifying that high-strength bolts have been properly tightened are very laborious and time consuming. In some cases, the techniques require special equipment and, in other cases, the verification itself may be somewhat subjective. While some commercially available verification techniques do exist, these options still have some limitations and might be considered costly options. The main objectives of this project were to explore high-strength bolt-tightening and verification techniques and to investigate the feasibility of developing and implementing new alternatives. A literature search and a survey of state departments of transportation (DOTs) were conducted to collect information on various bolt-tightening techniques such that an understanding of available and under-development techniques could be obtained. During the literature review, the requirements for materials, inspection, and installation methods outlined in the Research Council on Structural Connections specification were also reviewed and summarized. To guide the search for finding new alternatives and technology development, a working group meeting was held at the Iowa State University Institute for Transportation October 12, 2015. During the meeting, topics central to the research were discussed with Iowa DOT engineers and other professionals who have relevant experiences.
