By integrating a three-barrier, two-well resonant tunneling structure with a 1.2-mu m-thick, slightly doped n-GaAs layer, a photoinduced voltage shift on the order of magnitude of 100 mV in resonant current peaks has been verified at an irradiance of low light power density. The 1.2-mu m-thick, slightly doped n-GaAs layer manifests itself of playing an important role in enhancing photoelectric sensitivity. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The beating patterns in the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillatory magnetoresistance originating from zero-field spin splitting of two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) in In0.52Al0.48As/InxGa1-xAs/In0.52Al0.48As quantum wells with silicon delta doped on the upper barrier layer have been investigated by means of magnetotransport measurements before and after illumination. Contrary to the expectation, after each illumination, the beating nodes induced by the zero-field spin-splitting effect shift to lower and lower magnetic field due to the decrease in the zero-field spin-splitting energy of the 2DEGs. The anomalous phenomenon of the shift of the beating nodes and the decrease in spin-orbit coupling constants after illumination cannot be explained by utilizing the previous linear Rashba model. It is suggested that the decrease in the zero-field spin-splitting energy and the spin-orbit coupling constant arise from the nonlinear Rashba spin splitting.

A new structure analysis method for lanthanide complexes was proposed, that is, none paramagnetic shift tri-lanthanide mixture method, It was found that the paramagnetic induced shift could be cancelled by mixing three kinds of paramagnetic lanthanide ions in appropriate proportion. As a result, the chelating sites would he seen simplely from the half widths and the relative distances between lanthanide ion and the ligand nucleus could be calculated from the relaxation time (T-1) or the half width. Care should be addressed that the analysis method is suitable for the systems in which intramolecular arrangements and intermolecular ligand exchanges are relatively fasten NMR time scale used.

Reproductive failure results in many plant species becoming endangered. However, little is known of how and to what extent pollinator shifts affect reproductive performance of endangered species as a result of the artificial introduction of alien insects. In this study we examined breeding systems, visitor species, visiting frequency and seed set coefficients of Swertia przewalskii in two years that had different dominant pollinator species (native vs. alien). Flowers of this species were protandrous and herkogamous and insects were needed for the production of seeds. The stigmatic receptivity of this species was shorter than for other gentians. No significant difference in seed set coefficient was found for hand-pollinated plants between the two years, indicating that pollinator shift only had a minor effect on this plant's breeding system. The commonest pollinators in 2002 were native bumblebees, alien honeybees and occasional solitary bees, however, only alien honeybees were observed in 2004. The flower visitation rate in both years was relatively high, although the total visit frequency decreased significantly in 2004. The control flowers without any treatment produced significantly fewer seed sets in 2004 than in 2002. In the past decade the seed production of this species may have partly decreased due to pollination by alien honeybees, however, we suggest that they might have acted as alternative pollinators ensuring seed production of S. przewalskii when native pollinators were unavailable. The main reason that this plant is endangered is probably the result of habitat destruction, but changes in land use, namely intensified agricultural practice and unfavorable animal husbandry have also contributed to its decline. We recommend that in-situ conservation, including the establishment of a protected area, is the best way to preserve this species effectively.

High volumes of data traffic along with bandwidth hungry applications, such as cloud computing and video on demand, is driving the core optical communication links closer and closer to their maximum capacity. The research community has clearly identifying the coming approach of the nonlinear Shannon limit for standard single mode fibre [1,2]. It is in this context that the work on modulation formats, contained in Chapter 3 of this thesis, was undertaken. The work investigates the proposed energy-efficient four-dimensional modulation formats. The work begins by studying a new visualisation technique for four dimensional modulation formats, akin to constellation diagrams. The work then carries out one of the first implementations of one such modulation format, polarisation-switched quadrature phase-shift keying (PS-QPSK). This thesis also studies two potential next-generation fibres, few-mode and hollow-core photonic band-gap fibre. Chapter 4 studies ways to experimentally quantify the nonlinearities in few-mode fibre and assess the potential benefits and limitations of such fibres. It carries out detailed experiments to measure the effects of stimulated Brillouin scattering, self-phase modulation and four-wave mixing and compares the results to numerical models, along with capacity limit calculations. Chapter 5 investigates hollow-core photonic band-gap fibre, where such fibres are predicted to have a low-loss minima at a wavelength of 2μm. To benefit from this potential low loss window requires the development of telecoms grade subsystems and components. The chapter will outline some of the development and characterisation of these components. The world's first wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) subsystem directly implemented at 2μm is presented along with WDM transmission over hollow-core photonic band-gap fibre at 2μm. This paper introduces a novel channel inversion (CI) precoding scheme for the downlink of phase shift keying (PSK)-based multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. In contrast to common practice where knowledge of the interference is used to eliminate it, the main idea proposed here is to use this knowledge to glean benefit from the interference. It will be shown that the system performance can be enhanced by exploiting some of the existent inter-channel interference (ICI). This is achieved by applying partial channel inversion such that the constructive part of ICI is preserved and exploited while the destructive part is eliminated by means of CI precoding. By doing so, the effective signal to interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) delivered to the mobile unit (MU) receivers is enhanced without the need to invest additional transmitted signal power at the MIMO base station (BS). It is shown that the trade-off to this benefit is a minor increase in the complexity of the BS processing. The presented theoretical analysis and simulations demonstrate that due to the SINR enhancement, significant performance and throughput gains are offered by the proposed MIMO precoding technique compared to its conventional counterparts.

Chapter eleven on Mm-wave broadband wireless systems and enabling MMIC technologies, is contributed by Jian Zhang, Mury Thian, Guochi Huang, George Goussetis and Vincent F. Fusco, from Queen's University Belfast, UK. Millimeter wave bands provide large available bandwidths for high data rate wireless communication systems, which are envisaged to shift data throughput well in the GBps range. This capability has over past few years driven rapid developments in the technology underpinning broadband wireless systems as well as in the standardisation activity from various non-governmental consortia and the band allocation from spectrum regulators globally. This chapter provides an overview of the recent developments on V-band broadband wireless systems with the emphasis placed on enabling MMIC technologies. An overview of the key applications and available standards is presented. System-level architectures for broadband wireless applications are being reviewed. Examples of analysis, design and testing on MMIC components in SiGe BiCMOS are presented and the outlook of the technology is discussed.

We propose the inverse Gaussian distribution, as a less complex alternative to the classical log-normal model, to describe turbulence-induced fading in free-space optical (FSO) systems operating in weak turbulence conditions and/or in the presence of aperture averaging effects. By conducting goodness of fit tests, we define the range of values of the scintillation index for various multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) FSO configurations, where the two distributions approximate each other with a certain significance level. Furthermore, the bit error rate performance of two typical MIMO FSO systems is investigated over the new turbulence model; an intensity-modulation/direct detection MIMO FSO system with Q-ary pulse position modulation that employs repetition coding at the transmitter and equal gain combining at the receiver, and a heterodyne MIMO FSO system with differential phase-shift keying and maximal ratio combining at the receiver. Finally, numerical results are presented that validate the theoretical analysis and provide useful insights into the implications of the model parameters on the overall system performance. © 2011 IEEE.

Objectives: Health policy directs the management of patients with chronic disease in a country, but evaluating nationwide policies is difficult, not least because of the absence of suitable comparators. This paper examines the management of patients with type 2 diabetes in two demographically comparable populations with different health care systems to see if this represents a viable approach to evaluation.
Methods: A secondary analysis of centralized prescribing databases for 2010 was undertaken to compare the levels and costs of care of patients with type 2 diabetes in Northern Ireland’s National Health Service (NHS) (NI, n = 1.8 million) which has structured care, financial incentives related to diabetes care and an emphasis on generic prescribing, with that of the Republic of Ireland (ROI, n = 4.3 million) where management of diabetes care is guided solely by clinical and other guidelines.
Results: The prevalence of treated type 2 diabetes was 3.59% in NI and 3.09% in ROI, but there were similar and high levels of prescribing of secondary cardiovascular medications. Medication costs per person for anti-diabetic, anti-obesity and cardiovascular medication were 46% higher in ROI than NI, due to differences in levels of generic prescribing.
Conclusions: These different health care systems appear to be producing similar levels of care for patients with type 2 diabetes, although at different levels of cost. The findings question the need for financial incentives in NI and highlight the large cost savings potentially accruing from a greater shift to generic prescribing in ROI. Cross-country comparison, though not without difficulties, may prove a useful adjunct to within-country analysis of policy impact.

Systematic principal component analysis (PCA) methods are presented in this paper for reliable islanding detection for power systems with significant penetration of distributed generations (DGs), where synchrophasors recorded by Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) are used for system monitoring. Existing islanding detection methods such as Rate-of-change-of frequency (ROCOF) and Vector Shift are fast for processing local information, however with the growth in installed capacity of DGs, they suffer from several drawbacks. Incumbent genset islanding detection cannot distinguish a system wide disturbance from an islanding event, leading to mal-operation. The problem is even more significant when the grid does not have sufficient inertia to limit frequency divergences in the system fault/stress due to the high penetration of DGs. To tackle such problems, this paper introduces PCA methods for islanding detection. Simple control chart is established for intuitive visualization of the transients. A Recursive PCA (RPCA) scheme is proposed as a reliable extension of the PCA method to reduce the false alarms for time-varying process. To further reduce the computational burden, the approximate linear dependence condition (ALDC) errors are calculated to update the associated PCA model. The proposed PCA and RPCA methods are verified by detecting abnormal transients occurring in the UK utility network.

This paper compares a carrier tracking scenario when a received Global Positioning System (GPS) signal has low Doppler frequency. It is shown that if the Numerically Controlled Oscillator (NCO) is quantized to 1 bit, the carrier tracking loop is unable to keep track of the incoming signal which leaves the tracking loop oscillating between the upper and lower bounds of the tracking loop bandwidth. One way of overcoming this problem is presented and compared with another existing solution, found in the literature, providing comparative results from the use of real-recorded off the air GPS L1 signals. Results show that the proposed method performs better tracking performance compared with the existing solution which it requires much less hardware complexity.
