A new generation of high-capacity WDM systems with extremely robust performance has been enabled by coherent transmission and digital signal processing. To facilitate widespread deployment of this technology, particularly in the metro space, new photonic components and subsystems are being developed to support cost-effective, compact, and scalable transceivers. We briefly review the recent progress in InP-based photonic components, and report numerical simulation results of an InP-based transceiver comprising a dual-polarization I/Q modulator and a commercial DSP ASIC. Predicted performance penalties due to the nonlinear response, lower bandwidth, and finite extinction ratio of these transceivers are less than 1 and 2 dB for 100-G PM-QPSK and 200-G PM-16QAM, respectively. Using the well-established Gaussian-Noise model, estimated system reach of 100-G PM-QPSK is greater than 600 km for typical ROADM-based metro-regional systems with internode losses up to 20 dB. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

Many tracking algorithms have difficulties dealing with occlusions and background clutters, and consequently don't converge to an appropriate solution. Tracking based on the mean shift algorithm has shown robust performance in many circumstances but still fails e.g. when encountering dramatic intensity or colour changes in a pre-defined neighbourhood. In this paper, we present a robust tracking algorithm that integrates the advantages of mean shift tracking with those of tracking local invariant features. These features are integrated into the mean shift formulation so that tracking is performed based both on mean shift and feature probability distributions, coupled with an expectation maximisation scheme. Experimental results show robust tracking performance on a series of complicated real image sequences. © 2010 IEEE.

Currently the uncertain system has attracted much academic community from the standpoint of scientific research and also practical applications. A series of mathematical approaches emerge in order to troubleshoot the uncertainties of real physical systems. In this context, the work presented here focuses on the application of control theory in a nonlinear dynamical system with parametric variations in order and robustness. We used as the practical application of this work, a system of tanks Quanser associates, in a configuration, whose mathematical model is represented by a second order system with input and output (SISO). The control system is performed by PID controllers, designed by various techniques, aiming to achieve robust performance and stability when subjected to parameter variations. Other controllers are designed with the intention of comparing the performance and robust stability of such systems. The results are obtained and compared from simulations in Matlab-simulink.

In this paper, a new agent-based distributed reactive power management scheme is proposed to improve the voltage stability of energy distribution systems with distributed generation units. Three types of agents – distribution system agent, estimator agent, and control agent are developed within the multi-agent framework. The agents simultaneously coordinated their activities through the online information and energy flow. The overall achievement of the proposed scheme depends on the coordination between two tasks – (i) estimation of reactive power using voltage variation formula and (ii) necessary control actions to provide the estimated reactive power to the distribution networks through the distributed static synchronous compensators. A linear quadratic regulator with a proportional integrator is designed for the control agent in order to control the reactive component of the current and the DC voltage of the compensators. The performance of the proposed scheme is tested on a 10-bus power distribution network under various scenarios. The effectiveness is validated by comparing the proposed approach to the conventional proportional integral control approach. It is found that, the agent-based scheme provides excellent robust performance under various operating conditions of the power distribution network.

This paper presents a μ-Synthesis H∞ Controller for regulating the switching signal of the inverter connected with a three-phase photovoltaic (PV) system. To facilitate the control design, the system is represented in terms of state space realization with uncertainties. The control design involves selecting proper weighting functions and performing synthesis. The controller order is reduced by Henkel-norm method. Simulations are carried out to evaluate the characteristics of the controller under parametric uncertainties. It is found out that the proposed controller is inherently stable, possesses significantly small tracking error, and preserves nominal performance, robust stability and robust performance for the grid-connected three-phase PV system.

To facilitate the control design, the system is represented in terms of state space realization with uncertainties. The control design involves selecting proper weighting functions and performing LMI-synthesis. The controller order is reduced by Henkel-norm method. Identifying influential peers is an important issue for business to promote commercial strategies in social networks. This paper proposes a conductance eigenvector centrality (CEC) model to measure peer influence in the complex social network. The CEC model considers the social network as a conductance network and constructs methods to calculate the conductance matrix of the network. By a novel random walk mechanism, the CEC model obtains stable CEC values which measure the peer influence in the network. The experiments show that the CEC model can achieve robust performance in identifying peer influence. It outperforms the benchmark algorithms and obtains excellent outcomes when the network has high clustering coefficient.

For high performance aircrafts, the flight control system needs to be quite effective in both assuring accurate tracking of pilot commands, while simultaneously assuring overall stability of the aircraft. In addition, the control system must also be sufficiently robust to cater to possible parameter variations. The primary aim of this paper is to enhance the robustness of the controller for a HPA using neuro-adaptive control design. Here the architecture employs a network of Gaussian Radial basis functions to adaptively compensate for the ignored system dynamics. A stable weight mechanism is determined using Lyapunov theory. The network construction and performance of the resulting controller are illustrated through simulations with a low-fidelity six –DOF model of F16 that is available in open literature.

This paper presents a novel approach for designing a fixed gain robust power system stabilizer (PSS) with particu lar emphasis on achieving a minimum closed loop perfor mance, over a wide range of operating and system condi tion. The minimum performance requirements of the con troller has been decided apriori and obtained by using a genetic algorithm (GA) based power system stabilizer. The proposed PSS is robust to changes in the plant parameters brought about due to changes in system and operating con dition, guaranteeing a minimum performance. The efficacy of the proposed method has been tested on a multimachine system. The proposed method of tuning the PSS is an at tractive alternative to conventional fixed gain stabilizer de sign, as it retains the simplicity of the conventional PSS and still guarantees a robust acceptable performance over a wider range of operating and system condition.

This paper presents a new strategy for controlling rigid-robot manipulators in the presence of parametric uncertainties or un-modelled dynamics. The strategy combines an adaptation law with a well known robust controller proposed by Spong, which is derived using Lyapunov's direct method. Although the tracking problem of manipulators has been successfully solved with different strategies, there are some conditions under which their efficiency is limited. Specifically, their performance decreases when unknown loading masses or model disturbances are introduced. The aim of this work is to show that the proposed strategy performs better than existing algorithms, as verified with real-time experimental results with a Puma-560 robot. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd.
