The potential for nonlinear optical processes in nematic-liquid-crystal cells is great due to the large phase changes resulting from reorientation of the nematic-liquid-crystal director. Here the combination of diffraction and self-diffraction effects are studied simultaneously by the use of a pair of focused laser beams which are coincident on a homeotropically aligned liquid-crystal cell. The result is a complicated diffraction pattern in the far field. This is analyzed in terms of the continuum theory for liquid crystals, using a one-elastic-constant approximation to solve the reorientation profile. Very good comparison between theory and experiment is obtained. An interesting transient grating, existing due to the viscosity of the liquid-crystal material, is observed in theory and practice for large cell-tilt angles.

We experimentally investigate the use of an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) to interrogate interferometric sensors. A single broad-band light source is used to illuminate the system. Reflected spectral information is directed to an AWG with integral photodetectors providing 40 electrical outputs. We show that using the dual-wavelength technique we can measure the length of a Fabry-Pérot cavity by determining the optical phase changes of the scanned interferometric pattern, which produced a maximum unambiguous range of 1440 μm with an active sensor and a maximum unambiguous range of 300 μm with the introduction of a second processing interferometer, which allows the sensor to be passive. © 2005 IEEE.

The 5,280 km2 Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve includes pristine wetlands fed by ground water from the karst aquifer of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. The inflow through underground karst structures is hard to observe making it difficult to understand, quantify, and predict the wetland dynamics. Remotely sensed Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) amplitude and phase observations offer new opportunities to obtain information on hydrologic dynamics useful for wetland management. Backscatter amplitude of SAR data can be used to map flooding extent. Interferometric processing of the backscattered SAR phase data (InSAR) produces temporal phase-changes that can be related to relative water level changes in vegetated wetlands. We used 56 RADARSAT-1 SAR acquisitions to calculate 38 interferograms and 13 flooding maps with 24 day and 48 day time intervals covering July 2006 to March 2008. Flooding extent varied between 1,067 km2 and 2,588 km2 during the study period, and main water input was seen to take place in sloughs during October–December. We propose that main water input areas are associated with water-filled faults that transport ground water from the catchment to the wetlands. InSAR and Landsat data revealed local-scale water divides and surface water flow directions within the wetlands.

Introduction: The circadian system has neural projections for the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), directly interfering with sympathetic-vagal modulation of the cardiovascular system. Disturbances in the circadian system, such as phase changes in light-dark cycle (LD), has been related to the risk of development of cardiovascular diseases due to increased sympathetic tone and reduction o Heart Rate Variability (HRV - RR intervals). Purpose: Investigate the interaction between Circadian Timing System and cardiac autonomic control in rats. Materials and methods: We used 18 Wistar rats (♀, age = 139.9 ± 32.1 days, weight = 219.5 ± 16.2 g), divided into three distinct groups: Control (CG), phase delay of 6h (GDe) and phase advance of 6h (GAd). Three animals were excluded during data collection (CG/GDe/GAd - n=5). Telemeters were surgically implanted in each animal for continuous acquisition of electrocardiographic (ECG) signals (duration of 21 days in the CG and 28 days in GDe/ GAd). A LD cycle was established 12h: 12h, beginning of light at18:00h and dark at 06:00h. The animals remained in the same CG LD cycle throughout the experimental period, while, on the 14th day of registration, the GDe and GAd underwent a delay and an advance in 6h, respectively. Throughout the experimental period, the locomotor activity (LA), the mean heart rate (mHR) and variables related to iRR [mean RR (mRR), SDNN, RMSSD, LF, HF and LF/ HF ratio ] were recorded. All data were analyzed in blocks of 3 and 7 days, for the presence of circadian rhythm, values of Cosinor - mesor, amplitude and acrophase (paired t test), phase relationship, differences between light and dark (t test independent), averages every 30 minutes along each time series (two-way ANOVA with post hoc Bonferroni). The data block B1,M1 and M2 in CG served as benchmarks for comparisons between series of analysis of the GAT/GAV. Results: We observed circadian rhythmicity in the variables LA, mRR and mFC(p<0.01). mRR and mFC showed phase relationship with the LA in all three groups, being less stable in GAd. In the CG, no significant differences between blocks were found in any of the analyzes(p>0.05). Among the 7 day blocks, there was a significant reduction in mRR(p=0.04) and mFC(p=0.03) in GDe and significant reduction in HF mean(p=0.02) in GAd; and between 3 day blocks, a significant increase of LF/HF(p= 0.04) in the GDe; besides mRR(p=0.03), SDNN(p=0.04), RMSSD (p=0.04), LF (p=0.01) and HF(p=0.02) significant increase in the GAd. It was found that the differences between the means of the mRR, LA and mFC in light and dark phases were not significant after phase changes in some of the blocks/moments (GDe and GAd). No significant results were found when comparing rhythmic variables means every 30 minutes over the blocks, except for a significant decrease in mRR at the middle of the dark phase (B2) and the start of light phase (B3) - (p<0.01). Conclusion: phase advances and delays (6h) altered cardiac autonomic control in the experimental groups by temporarily HRV decrease. Phase advances apparently had greater negative interference in this process, in relation to the phase delays.

As the complexity of parallel applications increase, the performance limitations resulting from computational load imbalance become dominant. Mapping the problem space to the processors in a parallel machine in a manner that balances the workload of each processors will typically reduce the run-time. In many cases the computation time required for a given calculation cannot be predetermined even at run-time and so static partition of the problem returns poor performance. For problems in which the computational load across the discretisation is dynamic and inhomogeneous, for example multi-physics problems involving fluid and solid mechanics with phase changes, the workload for a static subdomain will change over the course of a computation and cannot be estimated beforehand. For such applications the mapping of loads to process is required to change dynamically, at run-time in order to maintain reasonable efficiency. The issue of dynamic load balancing are examined in the context of PHYSICA, a three dimensional unstructured mesh multi-physics continuum mechanics computational modelling code.

An 18-year time series of daily sea surface temperature of Gulf of Cadiz and an 18-month time series of temperature collected in the vicinity of the Guadalquivir estuary mouth have been analyzed to investigate the heat exchange between the estuary and the adjacent continental shelf. The first time identifies a continental shelf area where seasonal thermal oscillation signal (amplitudes and phase) changes abruptly. In order to explain this anomaly, the second data set allows a description of thermal fluctuations in a wide range of frequencies and an estimation of the upstream heat budget of the Guadalquivir estuary. Results show that high frequency thermal signal, diurnal and semidiurnal, and water flux signal through Guadalquivir mouth, mainly semidiurnal, apparently interact randomly to give a small exchange of thermal energy at high frequency. There is no trace, at the estuary's mouth, of daily heat exchanges with intertidal mudflats probably because it tends to cancel on daily time scales. Results also show that fluctuations of estimated air-sea fluxes force fluctuations of temperature in a quite homogeneous estuarine, with a delay of 20 days. The along-channel thermal energy gradient reaches magnitudes of 300-400 J m-4 near the mouth during the summer and winter and drives the estuary-shelf exchange of thermal energy at seasonal scale. Particularly, the thermal heat imported by the estuary from the shelf area during late fall-winter-early spring of 2008/2009 is balanced by the thermal heat that the estuary exports to the shelf area during late spring-summer of 2008. In summary, Guadalquivir river removes/imports excess of thermal energy towards/from the continental shelf seasonally, as a mechanism to accommodate excess of heat from one side respect to the other side.

The nature of the phase transitions of Bi2MoO6 has been investigated by the combined use of X-ray diffraction and Xray absorption spectroscopy. The distorted MoO6 octahedra in the low-temperature form are shown to undergo further distortion in the intermediate-temperature form before transforming to MoO4 tetrahedra in the high-temperature phase. The diamond films were deposited onto a wurtzite gallium nitride (GaN) thin film substrate using hot-filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD). During the film deposition a lateral temperature gradient was imposed across the substrate by inclining the substrate. As grown films predominantly showed the hexagonal phase, when no inclination was applied to the substrate. Tilting the substrate with respect to the heating filament by 6 degrees imposed a lateral temperature gradient across the substrate, which induced the formation of a cubic diamond phase. Diamond grains were predominantly oriented in the (100) direction. However, a further increase in the substrate tilt angle to 12 degrees, resulted in grains oriented in the (111) direction. The growth rate and hence the morphology of diamond grains varied along the inclined substrate. The present study focuses on the measurements of dominant phase formation and crystal orientation with varying substrate inclination using orientation-imaging microscopy (OIM). This technique enables direct examination of individual diamond grains and their crystallographic orientation. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The refractive indices of crystalline phase-change films are usually obtained by thermal-induced crystallization. However, this is not accurate, because the crystallization of phase-change film in rewritable optical disks is laser induced. In this study, we use the initializer to crystallize the phase-change films. The dependence of the refractive index n and the extinction coefficient k of the phase-change films on the initialization conditions are studied. Remarkable changes of the refractive indices (especially k) are found when the initialization laser power density is 6.63 mW/mum(2) and the initialization velocity is 4.0 m/s. At the same time, the structure changes of the phase-change films are also studied. This dependence is explained by the structure change of the films. These results are significant in improving the accuracy of optical design and the thermal simulation of phase-change optical disks, as well as in the study of phase-change optical disks at shorter wavelengths. A series of liquid crystalline copolyethers has been synthesized from 1-(4-hydroxy-4'-biphenyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane and different alpha,omega-dibromoalkanes [coTPP(n/m)]. In this report, coTPPs having n = 5, 7, 9, 11 and m = 12 are studied, which represent copolyethers having both varying odd number and a fixed even number of methylene units. The compositions were fixed at an equal molar ratio (50/50). These coTPPs(nlm) show multiple phase transitions during cooling and heating in differential scanning calorimetry experiments. The undercooling dependence of these transitions is found to be small, indicating that these transitions are close to equilibrium, Although the coTPPs possess a high-temperature nematic (N) phase, the periodicity order along the chain direction is increasingly disturbed when the length of the odd-numbered methylene units decreases from n 11 to 5. in the coTPPs(5/12, 7/12, and 9/12), wide-angle X-ray diffraction experiments at different temperatures show that, shortly after the N phase formation during cooling, the lateral molecular packing improves toward a hexagonal lattice, as evidenced by a gradual narrowing of the scattering halo. This process represents the possible existence of an exotic N phase, which serves as a precursor to the columnar (Phi(H)) phase. A further decrease in temperature leads to a (PH phase having a long-range ordered, two-dimensional hexagonal lattice. In coTPP(11/12), the phase structures are categorized as highly ordered and tilted, smectic and smectic crystal phases, similar to homoTPPs, such as the smectic F (S-F) and smectic crystal G (SCG) phases. An interesting observation is found for coTPP(9/12), wherein a structural change from the high-temperature Phi(H) phase to the low-temperature S-F phase occurs. It can be proven that, upon heating, the well-defined layer structure disappears and the lateral packing remains hexagonal. The overall structural differences in this series of coTPPs between those of the columnar and highly ordered smectic phases are related to the disorders introduced into the layer structure by the dissimilarity of the methylene unit lengths in the comonomers.
