The hydroconversion of n-paraffins is a key reaction in hydrodewaxing of lubricating base oil. In this paper, we investigate the performance of Pt/SAPO-11 catalysts for isomerization of n-paraffins by the model compound of n-dodecane. Under this experimental condition, yields of feed isomers as well as cracking products are a function of the total n-dodecane conversion. Primary products are methylundecane while multi-brancheds and cracking products are formed in successive reactions. The result shows that the addition of Sn increases the selectivity for isomerization reaction. The most ideal experimental data for hydroconversion of n-dodecane is that the selectivity of isomerized products gets 90% when conversion of n-dodecane is 90% for the Sn-promoted Pt/SAPO-11 catalyst.

A novel method was developed to prepare the highly active Pt-Ru-P/C catalyst. The deposition of phosphorus significantly increased electrochemical active surface (EAS) area of catalyst by reduces Pt-Ru particle size. TEM images show that Pt-Ru-P nanoparticles have an uniform size distribution with an average diameter of 2 nm. Cyclic voltammetry (CV), Chronoamperometry (CA), and CO stripping indicate that the presence of non-metal phosphorus as an interstitial species Pt-Ru-P/C catalyst shows high activity for the electro-oxidation of methanol, and exhibit enhanced performance in the oxidation of carbon monoxide compared with Pt-Ru/C catalyst. At 30 degrees C and pure oxygen was fed to the cathode, the maximum power density of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) with Pt-Ru-P/C and Pt-Ru/C catalysts as anode catalysts was 61.5 mW cm(-2) and 36.6 mW cm(-2), respectively. All experimental results indicate that Pt-Ru-P/C catalyst was the optimum anode catalyst for direct methanol fuel cell.

The electrocatalysis of CO tolerance of Pt/C, PtRu/C, PtFe/C, PtMo/C, and PtW/C at a PEM fuel cell anode has been investigated using single cell polarization and online electrochemical mass spectrometry (EMS) measurements, and cyclic voltammetry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), in situ X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analyses of the electrocatalysts. For all bimetallic electrocatalysts, which presented higher CO tolerance, EMS results have shown that the production of CO(2) start at lower hydrogen electrode overpotentials as compared to Pt/C, confirming the occurrence of the so-called bifunctional mechanism. On the other hand, XANES results indicate an increase in the Pt 5d-band vacancies for the bimetallic catalysts, particulary for PtFe/C, this leading to a weakening of the Pt-CO bond, helping to increase the CO tolerance (the so-called electronic effect). For PtMo/C and PtRu/C supplied with H(2)/CO, the formation of CO(2) is observed even when the cell is at open circuit, confirming some elimination of CO by a chemical process, most probably the water gas shift reaction. One of the key objectives in fuel-cell technology is to improve the performance of the anode catalyst for the alcohol oxidation and reduce Pt loading. Here, we show the use of six different electrocatalysts synthesized by the sol -gel method on carbon powder to promote the oxidation of methanol in acid media. The catalysts Pt-PbO(x) and Pt-(RuO(2)-PbO(x)) with 10% of catalyst load exhibited significantly enhanced catalytic activity toward the methanol oxidation reaction as compared to Pt-(RuO(2))/C and Pt/C electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry studies showed that the electrocatalysts Pt-PbO(x)/C and Pt-(RuO(2)-PbO(x))/C started the oxidation process at extremely low potentials and that they represent a good novelty to oxidize methanol. Furthermore, quasi-stationary polarization experiments and cronoamperometry studies showed the good performance of the Pt-PbO(x), Pt-(RuO(2)-PbO(x))/C and Pt-(RuO(2)-IrO(2))/C catalysts during the oxidation process. Thus, the addition of metallic Pt and PbO(x) onto high-area carbon powder, by the sol -gel route, constitutes an interesting way to prepare anodes with high catalytic activity for further applications in direct methanol fuel cell systems.

This study investigates the promoting effect of PtSnIr/C (1:1:1) electrocatalyst anode, prepared by polymeric precursor method, on the ethanol oxidation reaction in a direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC). All of the materials used were 20% metal m/m on carbon. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed the presence of Pt, PtOH 2, PtO 2, SnO 2 and IrO 2 at the electrocatalyst surface, indicating a possible decorated particle structure. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) analysis indicated metallic Pt and Ir as well as the formation of an alloy with Sn. Using the PtSnIr/C electrocatalyst prepared here with two times lower loading of Pt than PtSn/C E-tek electrocatalyst, it was possible to obtain the same maximum power density found for the commercial material. The main reaction product was acetic acid probably due to the presence of oxides, in this point the bifunctional mechanism is predominant, but an electronic effect should not be discarded. © 2012 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

The ethanol electro-oxidation reaction was studied on carbon-supported Pt, Rh, and on Pt overlayers deposited on Rh nanoparticles. The synthesized electrocatalysts were characterized by TEM and XRD. The reaction products were monitored by on-line DEMS experiments. Potentiodynamic curves showed higher overall reaction rate for Pt/C when compared to that for Rh/C. However, on-line DEMS measurements revealed higher average current efficiencies for complete ethanol electro-oxidation to CO2 on Rh/C. The average current efficiencies for CO2 formation increased with temperature and with the decrease in the ethanol concentration. The total amount of CO2, on the other hand, was slightly affected by the temperature and ethanol concentration. Additionally, the CO2 signal was observed only in the positive-going scan, none being observed in the negative-going scan, evidencing that the C-C bond breaking occurs only at lower potentials. Thus, the formation of CO2 mainly resulted from oxidative removal of adsorbed CO and CHx,ad species generated at the lower potentials, instead of the electrochemical oxidation of bulk ethanol molecules. The acetaldehyde mass signal, however, was greatly favored after increasing the ethanol concentration from 0.01 to 0.1 mol L-1, on both electrocatalysts, indicating that it is the major reaction product. For the Pt/Rh/C-based electrocatalysts, the Faradaic current and the conversion efficiency for CO2 formation was increased by adjusting the amount of Pt on the surface of the Rh/C nanoparticles. The higher conversion efficiency for CO2 formation on the Pt1Rh/C material was ascribed to its faster and more extensive ethanol deprotonation on the Pt-Rh sites, producing adsorbed intermediates in which the C-C bond cleavage is facilitated. This work aimed to develop plurimetallic electrocatalysts composed of Pt, Ru, Ni, and Sn supported on C by decomposition of polymeric precursors (DPP), at a constant metal: carbon ratio of 40:60 wt.%, for application in direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC). The obtained nanoparticles were physico-chemically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). XRD results revealed a face-centered cubic crystalline Pt with evidence that Ni, Ru, and Sn atoms were incorporated into the Pt structure. Electrochemical characterization of the nanoparticles was accomplished by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) in slightly acidic medium (0.05 mol L-1 H2SO4), in the absence and presence of ethanol. Addition of Sn to PtRuNi/C catalysts significantly shifted the ethanol and CO onset potentials toward lower values, thus increasing the catalytic activity, especially for the quaternary composition Pt64Sn15Ru13Ni8/C. Electrolysis of ethanol solutions at 0.4 V vs. RHE allowed determination of acetaldehyde and acetic acid as the main reaction products. The presence of Ru in alloys promoted formation of acetic acid as the main product of ethanol oxidation. The Pt64Sn15Ru13Ni8/C catalyst displayed the best performance for DEFC.
