ZrO2 thin films were deposited bill using an electron beam evaporation technique on three kinds of lithium triborate (LiB3O5 or LBO) substrates with the surfaces at specified crystalline orientations. The influences of the LBO structure on the structural and optical properties of ZrO2 thin films are studied by spectrophotometer and x-ray diffraction. The results indicate that the substrate structure has obvious effects on the structural end optical properties of the film: namely. the ZrO2 thin film deposited on the X-LBO, Y-LBO and Z-LBO orients to m(-212), m(021) and o(130) directions. It is also found that the ZrO2 thin film with m(021) has the highest refractive index and the least lattice misfit.

This work explored the use of industrial drop-on-demand inkjet printing for masking steel surfaces on engineering components, followed by chemical etching, to produce patterned surfaces. A solvent-based ink was printed on to mild steel samples and the influences of substrate topography and substrate temperature were investigated. Contact angle measurements were used to assess wettability. Regular patterns of circular spots (∼60 /on diameter) and more complex mask patterns were printed. Variation of the substrate temperature had negligible effect on the final size of the printed drops or on the resolution achieved. Colored optical interference fringes were observed on the dried ink deposits and correlated with film thickness measurements by whitelight interferometry.

The usage of semiconductor nanostructures is highly promising for boosting the energy conversion efficiency in photovoltaics technology, but still some of the underlying mechanisms are not well understood at the nanoscale length. Ge quantum dots (QDs) should have a larger absorption and a more efficient quantum confinement effect than Si ones, thus they are good candidate for third-generation solar cells. In this work, Ge QDs embedded in silica matrix have been synthesized through magnetron sputtering deposition and annealing up to 800°C. The thermal evolution of the QD size (2 to 10 nm) has been followed by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques, evidencing an Ostwald ripening mechanism with a concomitant amorphous-crystalline transition. The optical absorption of Ge nanoclusters has been measured by spectrophotometry analyses, evidencing an optical bandgap of 1.6 eV, unexpectedly independent of the QDs size or of the solid phase (amorphous or crystalline). A simple modeling, based on the Tauc law, shows that the photon absorption has a much larger extent in smaller Ge QDs, being related to the surface extent rather than to the volume. These data are presented and discussed also considering the outcomes for application of Ge nanostructures in photovoltaics.PACS: 81.07.Ta; 78.67.Hc; 68.65.-k.

Widespread approaches to fabricate surfaces with robust micro- and nanostructured topographies have been stimulated by opportunities to enhance interface performance by combining physical and chemical effects. In particular, arrays of asymmetric surface features, such as arrays of grooves, inclined pillars, and helical protrusions, have been shown to impart unique anisotropy in properties including wetting, adhesion, thermal and/or electrical conductivity, optical activity, and capability to direct cell growth. These properties are of wide interest for applications including energy conversion, microelectronics, chemical and biological sensing, and bioengineering. However, fabrication of asymmetric surface features often pushes the limits of traditional etching and deposition techniques, making it challenging to produce the desired surfaces in a scalable and cost-effective manner. We review and classify approaches to fabricate arrays of asymmetric 2D and 3D surface features, in polymers, metals, and ceramics. Analytical and empirical relationships among geometries, materials, and surface properties are discussed, especially in the context of the applications mentioned above. Further, opportunities for new fabrication methods that combine lithography with principles of self-assembly are identified, aiming to establish design principles for fabrication of arbitrary 3D surface textures over large areas. We have synthesized ternary InGaAs nanowires on (111)B GaAs surfaces by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. Au colloidal nanoparticles were employed to catalyze nanowire growth. We observed the strong influence of nanowire density on nanowire height, tapering, and base shape specific to the nanowires with high In composition. This dependency was attributed to the large difference of diffusion length on (111)B surfaces between In and Ga reaction species, with In being the more mobile species. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis together with high-resolution electron microscopy study of individual InGaAs nanowires shows large In/Ga compositional variation along the nanowire supporting the present diffusion model. Photoluminescence spectra exhibit a red shift with decreasing nanowire density due to the higher degree of In incorporation in more sparsely distributed InGaAs nanowires.

p-GaN surfaces are nano-roughened by plasma etching to improve the optical performance of GaN-based light emitting diodes (LEDs). The nano-roughened GaN present a relaxation of stress. The light extraction of the LEDs with nano-roughened surfaces is greatly improved when compared with that of the conventional LEDs without nano-roughening. PL-mapping intensities of the nano-roughened LED epi-wafers for different roughening times present two to ten orders of enhancement. The light output powers are also higher for the nano-roughened LED devices. This improvement is attributed to that nano-roughened surfaces can provide photons multiple chances to escape from the LED surfaces.

The chemical properties of AlxGa1-xN surfaces exposed to air for different time periods are investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), photoluminescence (PL) measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). PL and AFM results show that AlxGa1-xN samples exhibit different surface characteristics for different air-exposure times and Al contents. The XPS spectra of the Al 2p and Ga 2p core levels indicate that the peaks shifted slightly, from an Al-N to an Al-O bond and from a Ga-N to a Ga-O bond. All of these results show that the epilayer surface contains a large amount of Ga and Al oxides. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AlxInyGa1-x-yN epilayers have been grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) at different temperatures from 800 to 870degreesC. The incorporation of indium is found to increase with decreasing growth temperature, while the incorporation of Al remains nearly constant. The optical properties of the samples have been investigated by photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) at different temperatures. The results show that the sample grown at 820 C exhibits the best optical quality for its large PL intensity and the absence of the yellow luminescence. Furthermore the temperature-dependent PL and TRPL of the sample reveals its less exciton localization effect caused by alloy fluctuations. In the scanning electron microscopy measurement, much uniform surface morphology is found for the sample grown at 820degreesC, in good agreement with the PL results, The improvement of AlxInyGa1-x-yN quality is well correlated with the incorporation of indium into AlGaN and the possible mechanism is discussed. InAs and InxGa1-xAs (x = 0.2 and 0.5) self-organized quantum dots (QDs) were fabricated on GaAs(0 0 1) by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), acid photoluminescence polarization spectrum (PLP). Both structural and optical properties of InxGa1-xAs QD layer are apparently different from those of InAs QD layer. AFM shows that InxGa1-xAs QDs tend to be aligned along the [1 (1) over bar 0] direction, while InAs QDs are distributed randomly. TEM demonstrates that there is strain modulation along [1 1 0] in the InxGa1-xAs QD layers. PLP shows that In0.5Ga0.5As islands present optical anisotropy along [1 1 0] and [1 (1) over bar 0] due to structural and strain field anisotropy for the islands. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. In this paper, we investigated the self-assembled quantum dots formed on (100) and (N11)B (N = 2, 3, 4, 5) InP substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Two kinds of ternary QDs (In0.9Ga0.1As and In0.9Al0.1As QDs) are grown on the above substrates; Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photoluminescence (PL) results confirm QDs formation for all samples. The PL spectra reveal obvious differences in integral luminescence, peak position, full-width at half-maximum and peak shape between different oriented surfaces. Highest PL integral intensity is observed from QDs on (411)B surfaces, which shows a potential for improving the optical properties of QDs by using high-index surface. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Tb3+-doped zinc oxide nanocrystals with a hexagonal wurzite structure were successfully prepared by reaction between Zn-O-Tb precursors and LiOH in ethanol. Good incorporation of Tb3+ in ZnO nanocrystals is proved by XRD, FTIR, PL and PLE measurements. The presence of acetate complexes to zinc atoms on particle surfaces is disclosed by FTIR results. Emission from both Tb3+ ions and surface states in ZnO matrix, as well as their correlation were observed. The luminescence mechanism is discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We reported the optical properties of self-assembled In0.55Al0.45As quantum dots grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (001) and (n11)A/B(n = 3,5)GaAs substrates. Two peaks were observed in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra from quantum dots in the (001) substrate and this suggested two sets of quantum dots different in size. For quantum dots in the high-index substrates, the PL spectra were related to the atomic-terminated surface (A or B substrate). The peaks for the B substrate surfaces were in the lower energy position than that for the (001) and A type. In addition, quantum dots in the B substrate have comparatively high quantum efficiency. These results suggested that high-index B-type substrate is more suitable for the fabrication of quantum dots than (001) and A-type substrates at the same growth condition. Nanocrystalline silicon embedded SiO2 matrix has been formed by annealing the a-SiOx films fabricated by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique. Absorption and photoluminescence spectra of, the films have been studied in conjunction with micro-Raman scattering spectra. It is found that absorption presents an exponential dependence of absorption coefficient to photon energy in the range of 1.5-3.0 eV, and a sub-band appears in the range of 1.0-1.5 eV. The exponential absorption is due to the indirect band-to-band transition of electrons in silicon nanocrystallites, while the sub-band absorption is ascribed to transitions between surfaces and/or defect states of the silicon nanocrystallites. The existence of Stokes shift between absorption and photoluminescence suggests that the phonon-assisted luminescence would he enhanced due to the quantum confinement effects.

The structural and optical properties of InAs layers grown on high-index InP surfaces by molecular beam epitaxy are investigated in order to understand the self-organization of quantum dots and quantum wires on novel index surfaces. Four different InP substrate orientations have been examined, namely, (1 1 1)B, (3 1 1)A, and (3 1 1)B and (1 0 0). A rich variety of InAs nanostructures is formed on the surfaces. Quantum wire-like morphology is observed on the (1 0 0) surface, and evident island formation is found on (1 1 1)A and (3 1 1)B by atomic force microscopy. The photoluminescence spectra of InP (1 1 1)A and (3 1 1)B samples show typical QD features with PL peaks in the wavelength range 1.3-1.55 mu m with comparable efficiency. These results suggest that the high-index substrates are promising candidates for production of high-quality self-organized QD materials for device applications. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Photoluminescence (PL) investigation was carried out on GaInP/GaAs multiple quantum wells structures grown on (001) and (311) B surfaces of GaAs by gas source molecular beam epitaxy. Superlattice structures of GaAs/GaInP grown on (001) GaAs substrate were also studied in comparison. Deep-level luminescence was seen to dominate the PL spectra from the quantum wells and superlattice structures that were grown on (001) GaAs substrate. In contrast, superior optical properties were exhibited in the same structures grown on (311) B GaAs surfaces. The results suggested that GaAs/GaInP quantum well structures on (311) B oriented substrates could efficiently suppress the deep-level emissions, result in narrower PL peaks indicating smooth interfaces.
