INTRODUCTION: The relationship between the orientation of the segments and the adjustments that can be triggered by shoe lift and insoles in scoliotic patients during maintenance of standing position is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To verify static changes and those associated with unilateral manipulations of shoe lift in the postural orientation in people with idiopathic scoliosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Experimental group composed of ten patients with idiopathic scoliosis with double curve (less 10°) and control group with ten participants without scoliosis (aging from 13 to 24 years). Participants were videotaped in upright stance, standing with no, low (1 cm), and high (3 cm) shoe lift, which were placed under right and left shoe. In each condition, the participant maintain upright stance for 15 seconds and reflective markers were affixed on specific anatomical places. Postural angles were obtained: high thoracic; medium thoracic; thoracolumbar; and lumbar, as well segmental angles: shoulder; scapula; pelvis; and knee. RESULTS: In the no shoe lift condition, differences were observed between groups for high and medium thoracic angles and for shoulder. With low and high shoe lift under the right foot, difference was observed between shoe lift heights for high thoracic, for pelvis and knee angles. With low and high shoe lift under the left foot, differences between groups were observed for thoracolumbar angle and between shoe lift heights for pelvis and knee angles. CONCLUSIONS: The shoe lift promotes reorientation in the lower regions of the spine and segments of pelvis and knee. It might be suggested that in the scoliosis with double curves, manipulation in the basis of support changes the alignment of the trunk that might promote structural reorganization and the search of new adjustments among segments in individuals with idiopathic scoliosis.

Introduction: The table tennis is characterized by requiring of the athletes intense body movement. The gestures performed by athletes require continuous postural changes, in cases of any sway in body structures may produce postural changes or initiate processes of injuries. Objective: The aim of this study was to characterize the table tennis lesions. Method: Were evaluated 31 athletes (26 males and fi ve females) with mean age 22.35±6.67 years. The subjects were interviewed with the Reported Morbidity Inquires retroactive to the 2009 season. It was used techniques of descriptive and analytical statistics. Results: The largest number of injuries was muscular (74.35%), on the shoulder (43.58%) during the movement of top spin (33.33%) in the specifi c training phase (64.1%) with symptomatic return to the activities (69.23%). Conclusion: The weekly training workload infl uences the number of lesions.

Large motor dysfunctions are observed in older adults with the age advance. Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients have motor deficits to perform daily living activities. To raise from a chair, a daily task necessary to live independently, requires both large muscle recruitment and large joint range of motion to achieve the vertical position safely. Normally, we initiate gait after raise from a chair. The aim of this study was to analyze the PD patients’ behavior when rising from a chair and initiating gait and to compare it according to the age advance. In order to do that, 23 PD patients (66.61±7.64 years old) were distributed in three age groups: Young group, between 51 and 60 years of age (n=7); intermediary group, between 61 and 70 years of age (n=7); and elderly group, over 70 years of age (n=9). There were no statistical differences among groups either for the disease evolution stage or for it compromising. The task was to stand from a chair and to initiate gait forward in three attempts. The dependent variables were: spatial and temporal (first step length and duration, and stride length, duration and velocity) and angular (flexion and extension of head, shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle). The motion of standing from a chair was divided in two phases. The data was statistically treated by means of Analyses of Variance with group as the only factor. The Scheffé’s post hoc test was used to localize differences among groups and the significance level was adjusted to p≤0.017. There were statistical differences for stride...(Complete abstract click electronic access below)

This paper consists in the evaluation of the exposure rate to ionizing radiation to which professionals working in surgical procedures which require radiological examinations are subjected. Were initially performed real-time readings of exposure rate within four distinct operating rooms during the execution of four surgical procedures that made use of fluoroscopy equipment (including three orthopedic surgeries, one in the shoulder, one in the arm, another for deployment of metal pin in the leg region, and a fourth for vascular procedure); in these surgeries were used ionization chamber detector and an electrometer. In order to check the values achieved, was made a re-evaluation of the distribution of the rate of exposure to radiation, from the surgical procedures, now with thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs). For this, thirty TLDs were distributed in the operating rooms, arranged in points of interest as occupation by professionals. The TLDs were prepared for thirty consecutive days, after which they were removed and replaced with new dosimeters not exposed yet. The dosimeters were subjected to reading of the rate of exposure; this procedure was repeated for four months without interruption. The quantification of the results sought primarily to convert the rate of exposure for equivalent dose rate, both in measurements with ionization chamber as in measurements with TLDs, in order to highlight the presence of the biological effect of ionizing radiation for comparisons within scientific context. Then, the results were plotted to establish the relationship between the values of equivalent dose and the distance to the central axis of the x -ray source, confirming the inverse square law for distance. Finally, the values were associated with the maximum limit recommended by the legislation for occupationally exposed individuals. The methodology for the analysis and quantification of the data in this work aims at implementing a work plan that meets ...

A metal coping may undergo changes during porcelain firing, which compromises its marginal adaptation. The use of NiCrTi alloy proposes to minimize this effect through the high melting point of titanium present in its composition. This study evaluated the influence of porcelain firing cycle on the marginal adaptation of NiCrTi copings in different preparation designs. Forty standardized metal dies were fabricated with the following combinations finish line/convergence of the axial walls: 1) shoulder/6°; 2) shoulder/20°; 3) sloping shoulder/6°; 4) sloping shoulder/20°. On each die a metal ceramic restoration coping was made. The die/coping set was stabilized with orthodontic elastics, divided into four equidistant areas with three measurement points each and a cementation pressure was simulated. The measurements were taken under a stereomicroscope (32×). After the first measurement, the copings were submitted to sintering cycles simulating porcelain application. For repeated measurements, the same procedures described above were performed. Data were submitted to Student’s-t test, 1-way ANOVA and Tukey´s test (α = 0.05). Adaptation means (µm) before and after porcelain firing in different preparations were: 1) 111.92 and 127.31; 2) 124.15 and 135.48; 3) 122.19 and 138.77; 4) 166.09 and 186.72; respectively. The porcelain firing impaired adaptation, regardless of the preparation design. The preparation in a 20° sloping shoulder provided a worse adaptation when compared with preparations that had 6° and 20° shoulder, which were statistically equal. The 6° sloping shoulder was statistically equal to the other three preparation designs.
