Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are becoming feasible to provide system frequency support due to recent developments in technologies and plummeting cost. Adequate response of these devices becomes critical as the penetration of the renewable energy sources increases in the power system. This paper proposes effective use of BESS to improve system frequency performance. The optimal capacity and the operation scheme of BESS for frequency regulation are obtained using two staged optimization process. Furthermore, the effectiveness of BESS for improving the system frequency response is verified using dynamic simulations.

Genetic mark–recapture requires efficient methods of uniquely identifying individuals. 'Shadows' (individuals with the same genotype at the selected loci) become more likely with increasing sample size, and bias harvest rate estimates. Finding loci is costly, but better loci reduce analysis costs and improve power. Optimal microsatellite panels minimize shadows, but panel design is a complex optimization process. locuseater and shadowboxer permit power and cost analysis of this process and automate some aspects, by simulating the entire experiment from panel design to harvest rate estimation.

This paper investigates a new approach for point matching in multi-sensor satellite images. The feature points are matched using multi-objective optimization (angle criterion and distance condition) based on Genetic Algorithm (GA). This optimization process is more efficient as it considers both the angle criterion and distance condition to incorporate multi-objective switching in the fitness function. This optimization process helps in matching three corresponding corner points detected in the reference and sensed image and thereby using the affine transformation, the sensed image is aligned with the reference image. From the results obtained, the performance of the image registration is evaluated and it is concluded that the proposed approach is efficient.

An implementable nonlinear control design approach is presented for a supersonic air-breathing ramjet engine. The primary objective is to ensure that the thrust generated by the engine tracks the commanded thrust without violating the operational constraints. An important constraint is to manage the shock wave location in the intake so that it neither gets detached nor gets too much inside the intake. Both the objectives are achieved by regulating the fuel flow to the combustion chamber and by varying the throat area of the nozzle simultaneously. The design approach accounts for the nonlinear cross-coupling effects and nullifies those. Also, an extended Kalman filter has been used to filter out the sensor and process noises as well as to make the states available for feedback. Furthermore, independent control design has been carried out for the actuators. To test the performance of the engine for a realistic flight trajectory, a representative trajectory is generated through a trajectory optimization process, which is augmented with a newly-developed finite-time state dependent Riccati equation technique for nullifying the perturbations online. An approach employing displacement-stress dual criteria for static shape control is presented. This approach is based on normal displacement control, and stress modification is considered in the whole optimization process to control high stress in the local domain. Analysis results show that not only is the stress reduced but al so that the controlled surface becomes smoother than before.

This paper presents a model-based approach for reconstructing 3D polyhedral building models from aerial images. The proposed approach exploits some geometric and photometric properties resulting from the perspective projection of planar structures. Data are provided by calibrated aerial images. The novelty of the approach lies in its featurelessness and in its use of direct optimization based on image rawbrightness. The proposed framework avoids feature extraction and matching. The 3D polyhedral model is directly estimated by optimizing an objective function that combines an image-based dissimilarity measure and a gradient score over several aerial images. The optimization process is carried out by the Differential Evolution algorithm. The proposed approach is intended to provide more accurate 3D reconstruction than feature-based approaches. Fast 3D model rectification and updating can take advantage of the proposed method. Several results and evaluations of performance from real and synthetic images show the feasibility and robustness of the proposed approach.

This dissertation is concerned with the problem of determining the dynamic characteristics of complicated engineering systems and structures from the measurements made during dynamic tests or natural excitations. Particular attention is given to the identification and modeling of the behavior of structural dynamic systems in the nonlinear hysteretic response regime. Once a model for the system has been identified, it is intended to use this model to assess the condition of the system and to predict the response to future excitations.

A new identification methodology based upon a generalization of the method of modal identification for multi-degree-of-freedom dynaimcal systems subjected to base motion is developed. The situation considered herein is that in which only the base input and the response of a small number of degrees-of-freedom of the system are measured. In this method, called the generalized modal identification method, the response is separated into "modes" which are analogous to those of a linear system. Both parametric and nonparametric models can be employed to extract the unknown nature, hysteretic or nonhysteretic, of the generalized restoring force for each mode.

In this study, a simple four-term nonparametric model is used first to provide a nonhysteretic estimate of the nonlinear stiffness and energy dissipation behavior. To extract the hysteretic nature of nonlinear systems, a two-parameter distributed element model is then employed. This model exploits the results of the nonparametric identification as an initial estimate for the model parameters. This approach greatly improves the convergence of the subsequent optimization process.

The capability of the new method is verified using simulated response data from a three-degree-of-freedom system. The new method is also applied to the analysis of response data obtained from the U.S.-Japan cooperative pseudo-dynamic test of a full-scale six-story steel-frame structure.

The new system identification method described has been found to be both accurate and computationally efficient. It is believed that it will provide a useful tool for the analysis of structural response data.

This study investigates the optical properties and microstructure of Ta2O5 film deposited with the glancing angle deposition technique. The tilted nanocolumn microstructure, examined with scanning electron microscopy, induces the optical anisotropy of thin film. The optical properties of thin film are characterized with an inverse synthesis method. Based on the Cauchy model, the dispersion equations of optical constants of film are determined from the transmittance spectra measured at normal and oblique incidence over 400-800 nm. The starting values derived with an envelope method quicken the optimization process greatly. The dispersion of the principal indices N-1, N-2, and N-3 and the thickness d of thin film are presented statistically. A good agreement between the measured optical properties and theoretical calculation is obtained, which validates the model established for thin film produced by glancing angle deposition. A Otimização por Enxame de Partículas (PSO, Particle Swarm Optimization) é uma técnica de otimização que vem sendo utilizada na solução de diversos problemas, em diferentes áreas do conhecimento. Porém, a maioria das implementações é realizada de modo sequencial. O processo de otimização necessita de um grande número de avaliações da função objetivo, principalmente em problemas complexos que envolvam uma grande quantidade de partículas e dimensões. Consequentemente, o algoritmo pode se tornar ineficiente em termos do desempenho obtido, tempo de resposta e até na qualidade do resultado esperado. Para superar tais dificuldades, pode-se utilizar a computação de alto desempenho e paralelizar o algoritmo, de acordo com as características da arquitetura, visando o aumento de desempenho, a minimização do tempo de resposta e melhoria da qualidade do resultado final. Nesta dissertação, o algoritmo PSO é paralelizado utilizando três estratégias que abordarão diferentes granularidades do problema, assim como dividir o trabalho de otimização entre vários subenxames cooperativos. Um dos algoritmos paralelos desenvolvidos, chamado PPSO, é implementado diretamente em hardware, utilizando uma FPGA. Todas as estratégias propostas, PPSO (Parallel PSO), PDPSO (Parallel Dimension PSO) e CPPSO (Cooperative Parallel PSO), são implementadas visando às arquiteturas paralelas baseadas em multiprocessadores, multicomputadores e GPU. Os diferentes testes realizados mostram que, nos problemas com um maior número de partículas e dimensões e utilizando uma estratégia com granularidade mais fina (PDPSO e CPPSO), a GPU obteve os melhores resultados. Enquanto, utilizando uma estratégia com uma granularidade mais grossa (PPSO), a implementação em multicomputador obteve os melhores resultados.

A Inteligência de Enxame foi proposta a partir da observação do comportamento social de espécies de insetos, pássaros e peixes. A ideia central deste comportamento coletivo é executar uma tarefa complexa decompondo-a em tarefas simples, que são facilmente executadas pelos indivíduos do enxame. A realização coordenada destas tarefas simples, respeitando uma proporção pré-definida de execução, permite a realização da tarefa complexa. O problema de alocação de tarefas surge da necessidade de alocar as tarefas aos indivíduos de modo coordenado, permitindo o gerenciamento do enxame. A alocação de tarefas é um processo dinâmico pois precisa ser continuamente ajustado em resposta a alterações no ambiente, na configuração do enxame e/ou no desempenho do mesmo. A robótica de enxame surge deste contexto de cooperação coletiva, ampliada à robôs reais. Nesta abordagem, problemas complexos são resolvidos pela realização de tarefas complexas por enxames de robôs simples, com capacidade de processamento e comunicação limitada. Objetivando obter flexibilidade e confiabilidade, a alocação deve emergir como resultado de um processo distribuído. Com a descentralização do problema e o aumento do número de robôs no enxame, o processo de alocação adquire uma elevada complexidade. Desta forma, o problema de alocação de tarefas pode ser caracterizado como um processo de otimização que aloca as tarefas aos robôs, de modo que a proporção desejada seja atendida no momento em que o processo de otimização encontre a solução desejada. Nesta dissertação, são propostos dois algoritmos que seguem abordagens distintas ao problema de alocação dinâmica de tarefas, sendo uma local e a outra global. O algoritmo para alocação dinâmica de tarefas com abordagem local (ADTL) atualiza a alocação de tarefa de cada robô a partir de uma avaliação determinística do conhecimento atual que este possui sobre as tarefas alocadas aos demais robôs do enxame. O algoritmo para alocação dinâmica de tarefas com abordagem global (ADTG) atualiza a alocação de tarefas do enxame com base no algoritmo de otimização PSO (Particle swarm optimization). No ADTG, cada robô possui uma possível solução para a alocação do enxame que é continuamente atualizada através da troca de informação entre os robôs. As alocações são avaliadas quanto a sua aptidão em atender à proporção-objetivo. Quando é identificada a alocação de maior aptidão no enxame, todos os robôs do enxame são alocados para as tarefas definidas por esta alocação. Os algoritmos propostos foram implementados em enxames com diferentes arranjos de robôs reais demonstrando sua eficiência e eficácia, atestados pelos resultados obtidos.

Modern Engineering Design involves the deployment of many computational tools. Re- search on challenging real-world design problems is focused on developing improvements for the engineering design process through the integration and application of advanced com- putational search/optimization and analysis tools. Successful application of these methods generates vast quantities of data on potential optimum designs. To gain maximum value from the optimization process, designers need to visualise and interpret this information leading to better understanding of the complex and multimodal relations between param- eters, objectives and decision-making of multiple and strongly conflicting criteria. Initial work by the authors has identified that the Parallel Coordinates interactive visualisation method has considerable potential in this regard. This methodology involves significant levels of user-interaction, making the engineering designer central to the process, rather than the passive recipient of a deluge of pre-formatted information. In the present work we have applied and demonstrated this methodology in two differ- ent aerodynamic turbomachinery design cases; a detailed 3D shape design for compressor blades, and a preliminary mean-line design for the whole compressor core. The first case comprises 26 design parameters for the parameterisation of the blade geometry, and we analysed the data produced from a three-objective optimization study, thus describing a design space with 29 dimensions. The latter case comprises 45 design parameters and two objective functions, hence developing a design space with 47 dimensions. In both cases the dimensionality can be managed quite easily in Parallel Coordinates space, and most importantly, we are able to identify interesting and crucial aspects of the relationships between the design parameters and optimum level of the objective functions under con- sideration. These findings guide the human designer to find answers to questions that could not even be addressed before. In this way, understanding the design leads to more intelligent decision-making and design space exploration. © 2012 AIAA.

A design and optimization procedure developed and used for a propeller installed on a twin-semitunnel-hull ship navigating in very shallow and icy water under heavy load conditions is presented. The base propeller for this vessel was first determined using classic design routines under open-water condition with existing model test data. In the optimization process, a panel method code (PROPELLA) was used to vary the pitch values and distributions and take into account the inflow wake distribution, tunnel gap, and cavitation effects. The optimized propeller was able to improve a ship speed of 0.02 knots higher than the desired speed and 0.06 knots higher than the classic B-series propeller. The analysis of the effect of inflow wake, hull tunnel, cavitation, and blade rake angle on propulsive performance is the focus of this paper.

Genetic Algorithms (GAs) make use of an internal representation of a given system in order to perform optimization functions. The actual structural layout of this representation, called a genome, has a crucial impact on the outcome of the optimization process. The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of different internal representations in a GA, which generates neural networks. A second GA was used to optimize the genome structure. This structure produces an optimized system within a shorter time interval.

In this paper, a prototype of miniaturized, low power, bi-directional wireless sensor node for wireless sensor networks (WSN) was designed for doors and windows building monitoring. The capacitive pressure sensors have been developed particularly for such application, where packaging size and minimization of the power requirements of the sensors are the major drivers. The capacitive pressure sensors have been fabricated using a 2.4 mum thick strain compensated heavily boron doped SiGeB diaphragm is presented. In order to integrate the sensors with the wireless module, the sensor dice was wire bonded onto TO package using chip on board (COB) technology. The telemetric link and its capabilities to send information for longer range have been significantly improved using a new design and optimization process. The simulation tool employed for this work was the Designerreg tool from Ansoft Corporation.

The need to integrate cost into the early product definition process as an engineering parameter is addressed. The application studied is a fuselage panel that is typical for commercial transport regional jets. Consequently, a semi-empirical numerical analysis using reference data was coupled to model the structural integrity of thin-walled structures with regard to material failure and buckling: skin, stringer, flexural, and interrivet. The optimization process focuses on direct operating cost (DOC) as a function of acquisition cost and fuel burn. It was found that the ratio of acquisition cost to fuel burn was typically 4:3 and that there was a 10% improvement in the DOC for the minimal DOC condition over the minimal weight condition because of the manufacturing cost saving from having a reduced number of larger-area stringers and a slightly thicker skin than that preferred by the minimal weight condition. Also note that the minimal manufacturing cost condition was slightly better than the minimal weight condition, which highlights the key finding: The traditional minimal weight condition is a dated and suboptimal approach to airframe structural design.
