Noise seems to stand for a lack of aesthetic grace, to alienate or distract rather than enrapture. And yet the drones of psychedelia, the racket of garage rock and punk, the thudding of rave, the feedback of shoegaze and post-rock, the bombast of thrash and metal, the clatter of jungle and the stuttering of electronica, together with notable examples of avant-garde noise art, have all found a place in the history of contemporary musics, and are recognised as representing key evolutionary moments. Noise therefore is the untold story of contemporary popular music, and in a critical exploration of noise lies the possibility of a new narrative – one that is wide-ranging, connects the popular to the underground and avant-garde, fully posits the studio as a musical instrument, and demands new critical and theoretical paradigms of those seeking to write about music. Pathfinder (2016) is an audiovisual performance-game for a solo drummer,exploring the synergies between multiple contemporary creative practices.The work navigates between music composition, improvisation, projection/ light art and game art. At its heart lies a bespoke electro-acoustic instrument,the augmented drum-kit, used not only to provide the sonic content of the work in real-time, but also as a highly expressive game controller that interacts with an instrument-specific game. The musical instrument offers a much wider range of expressive possibilities, control and tactile feedback in comparison to a traditional general-purpose game controller, and as a result it affords a very diverse and nuanced gameplay performance. Live electronics, lights, projections and the drum-kit all make up the performance-game’s universe, within which the performer has to explore, adjust, navigate and complete a journey.

Electrical keyboard instruments and computer-aided music-making generally base on the piano keyboard that was developed for a tuning system no longer used. Alternative keyboard layout offers at least easier playing, faster adopting, new ways to play and better ergonomics. This thesis explores the development of keyboard instruments and tunings, and different keyboard layouts. This work is preliminary research for an electrical keyboard instrument to be implemented later on.

El uso de la tecnología musical en el aula es fruto de múltiples investigaciones alrededor del mundo. El objetivo de este taller es mostrar las inmensas posibilidades didácticas de un tipo de software que no está inicialmente diseñado para la educación musical: el Secuenciador de Audio-MIDI. Un Secuenciador2 de Audio-MIDI es un tipo de software musical que puede grabar y gestionar información musical en, generalmente, dos soportes: el MIDI y el audio digital. El uso combinado de estas dos posibilidades más un interface gráfico altamente moldeable, hacen del Secuenciador una potente herramienta musical

Este proyecto tiene como objetivo el desarrollo de una interfaz MIDI, basada en técnicas de procesamiento digital de la imagen, capaz de controlar diversos parámetros de un software de audio mediante información gestual: el movimiento de las manos. La imagen es capturada por una cámara Kinect comercial y los datos obtenidos por ésta son procesados en tiempo real. La finalidad es convertir la posición de varios puntos de control de nuestro cuerpo en información de control musical MIDI. La interfaz ha sido desarrollada en el lenguaje y entorno de programación Processing, el cual está basado en Java, es de libre distribución y de fácil utilización. El software de audio seleccionado es Ableton Live, versión 8.2.2, elegido porque es útil tanto para la composición musical como para la música en directo, y esto último es la principal utilidad que se le pretende dar a la interfaz. El desarrollo del proyecto se divide en dos bloques principales: el primero, diseño gráfico del controlador, y el segundo, la gestión de la información musical. En el primer apartado se justifica el diseño del controlador, formado por botones virtuales: se explica el funcionamiento y, brevemente, la función de cada botón. Este último tema es tratado en profundidad en el Anexo II: Manual de usuario. En el segundo bloque se explica el camino que realiza la información MIDI desde el procesador gestual hasta el sintetizador musical. Este camino empieza en Processing, desde donde se mandan los mensajes que más tarde son interpretados por el secuenciador seleccionado, Ableton Live. Una vez terminada la explicación con detalle del desarrollo del proyecto se exponen las conclusiones del autor acerca del desarrollo del proyecto, donde se encuentran los pros y los contras a tener en cuenta para poder sacar el máximo provecho en el uso del controlador . En este mismo bloque de la memoria se exponen posibles líneas futuras a desarrollar. Se facilita también un presupuesto, desglosado en costes materiales y de personal. ABSTRACT. The aim of this project is the development of a MIDI interface based on image digital processing techniques, able to control several parameters of an audio software using gestural information, the movement of the hands. The image is captured by a commercial Kinect camera and the data obtained by it are processed in real time. The purpose is to convert the position of various points of our body into MIDI musical control information. The interface has been developed in the Processing programming language and environment which is based on Java, freely available and easy to used. The audio software selected is Ableton Live, version 8.2.2, chosen because it is useful for both music composition and live music, and the latter is the interface main intended utility. The project development is divided into two main blocks: the controller graphic design, and the information management. The first section justifies the controller design, consisting of virtual buttons: it is explained the operation and, briefly, the function of each button. This latter topic is covered in detail in Annex II: user manual. In the second section it is explained the way that the MIDI information makes from the gestural processor to the musical synthesizer. It begins in Processing, from where the messages, that are later interpreted by the selected sequencer, Ableton Live, are sent. Once finished the detailed explanation of the project development, the author conclusions are presented, among which are found the pros and cons to take into account in order to take full advantage in the controller use. In this same block are explained the possible future aspects to develop. It is also provided a budget, broken down into material and personal costs.

The design, construction, and characterization of a portable opto-coupled potentiostat are presented. The potentiostat is battery-powered, managed by a microcontroller, which implements cyclic voltammetry (CV) using suitable sensor electrodes. Its opto-coupling permits a wide range of current measurements, varying from mA to nA. Two software interfaces were developed to perform the CV measurement: a virtual instrument for a personal computer (PC) and a C-base interface for personal digital assistant (PDA). The potentiostat has been evaluated by detection of potassium ferrocyanide in KCl medium, both with macro and microelectrodes. There was good agreement between the instrumental results and those from commercial equipment.

OBJECTIVE To assess the digital educational technology interface Caring for the sensory environment in the neonatal unit: noise, lighting and handling based on ergonomic criteria. METHODS Descriptive study, in which we used the guidelines and ergonomic criteria established by ISO 9241-11 and an online Likert scale instrument to identify problems and interface qualities. The instrument was built based on Ergolist, which follows the criteria of ISO 9141-11. There were 58 undergraduate study participants from the School of Nursing of Ribeirao Preto, University of Sao Paulo, who attended the classes about neonatal nursing content. RESULTS All items were positively evaluated by more than 70% of the sample. CONCLUSION Educational technology is appropriate according to the ergonomic criteria and can be made available for teaching nursing students.
