Methods are developed for predicting rate coefficients for reactions of initiators of tropospheric oxidation with unsaturated compounds that are abundant in the atmosphere; prognostic tools of this kind are essential for atmospheric chemists and modellers. To pursue the aim of exploring such tools, the kinetics of reactions of NO3, OH and O-3 with a series of alkenes are examined for correlations relating the logarithms of the rate coefficients to the energies of the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) of the alkenes. A comparison of the values predicted by the correlations with experimental data (where the latter exist) allowed us to assess the reliability of our method. We used a series of theoretical methods to calculate the HOMO energies, and found that higher computational effort improves the agreement of the predicted rate coefficients with experimental values, especially for reactions of NO3 with alkenes that possess vinyllic halogen substituents. As a consequence, it is expedient to suggest new correlations to replace those presented by us and others that were based on the lower level of theory. We propose the following correlations for the reactions of NO3, OH and O-3 with alkenes: ln(k(NO3)/cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)) = 6.40(E-HOMO/eV) + 31.69, ln(k(OH)/cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)) = 1.21 (E-HOMO/eV)-12.34 and ln(k(O3)/cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)) = 3.28(E-HOMO/eV)-6.78. These new correlations have been developed using the larger experimental data sets now available, and the impact of the extended data on the quality of the correlations is examined in the paper. Atmospheric lifetimes have been calculated from both experimental and estimated rate coefficients to provide an overview of removal efficiencies for different classes of alkenes with respect to oxidative processes initiated by NO3, OH and O-3. A figure is presented to show the spatial scales over which alkenes may survive transport in competition with attack by NO3, OH and O-3. Removal by NO3 or OH is always more important than removal by O-3, and reactions with NO3 dominate for scales up to a few hundred metres.

DFT and TD-DFT calculations (ADF program) were performed in order to analyze the electronic structure of the [M-3(CO)(12)] clusters (M = Ru, Os) and interpret their electronic spectra. The highest occupied molecular orbitals are M-M bonding (sigma) involving different M-M bonds, both for Ru and Os. They participate in low-energy excitation processes and their depopulation should weaken M-M bonds in general. While the LUMO is M-NI and M-CO anti-bonding (sigma*), the next, higher-lying empty orbitals have a main contribution from CO (pi*) and either a small (Ru) or an almost negligible one (Os) from the metal atoms. The main difference between the two clusters comes from the different nature of these low-energy unoccupied orbitals that have a larger metal contribution in the case of ruthenium. The photochemical reactivity of the two clusters is reexamined and compared to earlier interpretations.

Different models for the electronic structure of carbon monoxide are suggested in influential textbooks. Therefore, this electronic structure offers an interesting subject in teaching because it can be used as an example to relate seemingly conflicting concepts. Understanding the connections between ostensibly different methods and between different concepts, related or conflicting, is important in academic studies. The related reactivities of CO, O2, and N-2 and the notations of molecular orbitals are topics of interest and are discussed in detail.

The dissymmetrical naphthalene-bridged complexes [Cp′Fe(μ-C10H8)FeCp*] (3; Cp* = η5-C5Me5, Cp′ = η5-C5H2-1,2,4-tBu3) and [Cp′Fe(μ-C10H8)RuCp*] (4) were synthesized via a one-pot procedure from FeCl2(thf)1.5, Cp′K, KC10H8, and [Cp* FeCl(tmeda)] (tmeda = N,N,N′,N′- tetramethylethylenediamine) or [Cp*RuCl]4, respectively. The symmetrically substituted iron ruthenium complex [Cp*Fe(μ-C10H8)RuCp*] (5) bearing two Cp* ligands was prepared as a reference compound. Compounds 3−5 are diamagnetic and display similar molecular structures, where the metal atoms are coordinated to opposite sides of the bridging naphthalene molecule. Cyclic voltammetry and UV/vis spectroelectrochemistry studies revealed that neutral 3−5 can be oxidized to monocations 3+−5+ and dications 32+−52+. The chemical oxidation of 3 and 4 with [Cp2Fe]PF6 afforded the paramagnetic hexafluorophosphate salts [Cp′Fe(μ-C10H8)FeCp*]PF6 ([3]PF6) and [Cp′Fe(μ-C10H8)RuCp*]PF6 ([4]PF6), which were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, including EPR and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The molecular structure of [4]PF6 was determined by X-ray crystallography. DFT calculations support the structural and spectroscopic data and determine the compositions of frontier molecular orbitals in the investigated complexes. The effects of substituting Cp* with Cp′ and Fe with Ru on the electronic structures and the structural and spectroscopic properties are analyzed.

The protonation effect on the vibrational and electronic spectra of 4-aminoazobenzene and 4-(dimethylamino)azobenzene was investigated by resonance Raman spectroscopy, and the results were discussed on the basis of quantum-chemical calculations. Although this class of molecular systems has been investigated in the past concerning the azo-hydrazone tautomerism, the present work is the first to use CASSCF/CASPT2 calculations to unveil the structure of both tautomers as well the nature of the molecular orbitals involved in chromophoric moieties responsible for the resonance Raman enhancement patterns. More specifically both the resonance Raman and theoretical results show clearly that in the neutral species, the charge transfer transition involves mainly the azo moiety, whereas in the protonated forms there is a great difference, depending on the tautomer. In fact, for the azo tautomer the transition is similar to that observed in the corresponding neutral species, whereas in the hydrazone tautomer such a transition is much more delocalized due to the contribution of the quinoid structure. The characterization of protonated species and the understanding of the tautomerization mechanism are crucial for controlling molecular properties depending on the polarity and pH of the medium.

Molecular orbital calculations were carried out on a set of 28 non-imidazole H(3) antihistamine compounds using the Hartree-Fock method in order to investigate the possible relationships between electronic structural properties and binding affinity for H3 receptors (pK(i)). It was observed that the frontier effective-for-reaction molecular orbital (FERMO) energies were better correlated with pK(i) values than highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy values. Exploratory data analysis through hierarchical cluster (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) showed a separation of the compounds in two sets, one grouping the molecules with high pK(i) values, the other gathering low pK(i) value compounds. This separation was obtained with the use of the following descriptors: FERMO energies (epsilon(FERMO)), charges derived from the electrostatic potential on the nitrogen atom (N(1)), electronic density indexes for FERMO on the N(1) atom (Sigma((FERMO))c(i)(2)). and electrophilicity (omega`). These electronic descriptors were used to construct a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model through the partial least-squares (PLS) method with three principal components. This model generated Q(2) = 0.88 and R(2) = 0.927 values obtained from a training set and external validation of 23 and 5 molecules, respectively. After the analysis of the PLS regression equation and the values for the selected electronic descriptors, it is suggested that high values of FERMO energies and of Sigma((FERMO))c(i)(2), together with low values of electrophilicity and pronounced negative charges on N(1) appear as desirable properties for the conception of new molecules which might have high binding affinity. 2010 Elsevier Inc. We discuss the nature of visible photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature in amorphous calcium titanate in the light of the results of recent experimental and quantum mechanical theoretical studies. Our investigation of the electronic structure involved the use of first-principle molecular calculations to simulate the variation of the electronic structure in the calcium titanate crystalline phase, which is known to have a direct band gap, and we also made an in-depth examination of amorphous calcium titanate. The results of our theoretical calculations of amorphous calcium titanate indicate that the formation of fivefold coordination in the amorphous system may introduce delocalized electronic levels in the highest occupied and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals. These delocalized electronic levels are related to the formation of a tail in the absorbance spectrum curve. The results indicate that amorphous calcium titanate has the conduction band near the band gap dominated by Ca states contribution. Experimental optical absorption measurements showed the presence of a tail. These results are interpreted by the nature of these exponential optical edges and tails, associated with defects promoted by the disordered structure of the amorphous material. We associate them with delocalized states in the band gap. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The first stage of the photosynthetic process is the extraordinary efficiency of sunlight absorption in the visible region [1]. This region corresponds to the maximum of the spectral radiance of the solar emission. The efficient absorption of visible light is one of the most important characteristics of photosynthetic pigments. In chlorophylls, for example, the absorptions are seen as a strong absorption in the region 400-450 nm in connection with other absorptions with small intensities in the region of 500-600 nm. This work aims at understanding the essential features of the absorption spectrum of photosynthetic pigments, in line with several theoretical studies in the literature [2, 3]. The absorption spectra were calculated for H2-Porphyrin, Mg-Porphyrin, and Zn-Porphyrin, and for H2-Phthalocyanine and Mg-Phthalocyanine with and without the four peripheral eugenol substituents. The geometries were optimized using the B3LYP/6-31+G(d) theoretical model. For the calculation of the absorption spectra different TD-DFT calculations were performed (B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, O3LYP, M06-2X and BP86) along with CIS (D). For the spectra the basis set 6-311++G (d, p) was used for porphyrins and 6-31+G (d) was used for the other systems. At this stage the solvent effects were considered using the simplified continuum model (PCM). First a comparison between the results using the different methods was made. For the porphyrins the best results compared to experiment (both in position and intensities) are obtained with M06-2X and CIS (D). We also analyze the compatibility of the four-orbital model of Gouterman [4] that states that transitions could be well described by the HOMO-1, HOMO, LUMO, and LUMO+1 molecular orbitals. Our results for H2-Porphyrin shows an agreement with other theoretical results and experimental data [5]. For the phthalocyanines (including the four peripheral eugenol substituents) the results are also in good agreement compared with the experimental results given in ref [6]. Finally, the results show that the inclusion of solvent eÆects gives corrections for the spectral shift in the correct direction but numerically small. References [1] R.E.

To aid the design of organic semiconductors, we study the charge transport properties of organic liquid crystals, i.e. hexabenzocoronene and carbazole macrocycle, and single crystals, i.e. rubrene, indolocarbazole and benzothiophene derivatives (BTBT, BBBT). The aim is to find structure-property relationships linking the chemical structure as well as the morphology with the bulk charge carrier mobility of the compounds. To this end, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed yielding realistic equilibrated morphologies. Partial charges and molecular orbitals are calculated based on single molecules in vacuum using quantum chemical methods. The molecular orbitals are then mapped onto the molecular positions and orientations, which allows calculation of the transfer integrals between nearest neighbors using the molecular orbital overlap method. Thus we obtain realistic transfer integral distributions and their autocorrelations. In case of organic crystals the differences between two descriptions of charge transport, namely semi-classical dynamics (SCD) in the small polaron limit and kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) based on Marcus rates, are studied. The liquid crystals are investigated solely in the hopping limit. To simulate the charge dynamics using KMC, the centers of mass of the molecules are mapped onto lattice sites and the transfer integrals are used to compute the hopping rates. In the small polaron limit, where the electronic wave function is spread over a limited number of neighboring molecules, the Schroedinger equation is solved numerically using a semi-classical approach. The results are compared for the different compounds and methods and, where available, with experimental data. The carbazole macrocycles form columnar structures arranged on a hexagonal lattice with side chains facing inwards, so columns can closely approach each other allowing inter-columnar and thus three-dimensional transport. When taking only intra-columnar transport into account, the mobility is orders of magnitude lower than in the three-dimensional case. BTBT is a promising material for solution-processed organic field-effect transistors. We are able to show that, on the time-scales of charge transport, static disorder due to slow side chain motions is the main factor determining the mobility. The resulting broad transfer integral distributions modify the connectivity of the system but sufficiently many fast percolation paths remain for the charges. Rubrene, indolocarbazole and BBBT are examples of crystals without significant static disorder. The high mobility of rubrene is explained by two main features: first, the shifted cofacial alignment of its molecules, and second, the high center of mass vibrational frequency. In comparsion to SCD, only KMC based on Marcus rates is capable of describing neighbors with low coupling and of taking static disorder into account three-dimensionally. Thus it is the method of choice for crystalline systems dominated by static disorder. However, it is inappropriate for the case of strong coupling and underestimates the mobility of well-ordered crystals. SCD, despite its one-dimensionality, is valuable for crystals with strong coupling and little disorder. It also allows correct treatment of dynamical effects, such as intermolecular vibrations of the molecules. Rate equations are incapable of this, because simulations are performed on static snapshots. We have thus shown strengths and weaknesses of two state of the art models used to study charge transport in organic compounds, partially developed a program to compute and visualize transfer integral distributions and other charge transport properties, and found structure-mobility relations for several promising organic semiconductors.
