Effect of elliptical manufacture error of an axicon on the diffraction-free beam patterns

Based on the generalized Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral theory and the stationary-phase method, we analyze the influence on diffraction-free beam patterns of an elliptical manufacture error in an axicon. The numerical simulation is compared with the beam patterns photographed by using a CCD camera. Theoretical simulation and experimental results indicate that the intensity of the central spot decreases with increasing elliptical manufacture defect and propagation distance. Meanwhile, the bright rings around the central spot are gradually split into four or more symmetrical bright spots. The experimental results fit the theoretical simulation very well. The design, development, and manufacture of large wood/composite wind turbine rotors

Discusses a study conducted to determine the best development path for large wind turbine rotor design. Shape and number of blades, degrees of freedom allowed, and control strategy are considered. Manufacture and costs are also discussed. Two-bladed, stall-regulated, teetered rotors are more cost effective than three-bladed rotors. Single-bladed rotors can be even more cost-effective. No new manufacturing techniques are required. The most cost-effective rotor includes a hub constructed in wood/composite materials, bonded to the blades. There is strong incentive for the blade manufacturer to supply the complete rotor. (from author's abstract)

Small scale manufacture of crude agar from Gracilaria seaweeds

A simplified process was worked out to prepare crude agar from red seaweeds (Gracilaria sp.). The process required careful preliminary cleaning and bleaching (sun-drying) of the weed. The agar was extracted by boiling with water in a mixture (2%) strong enough to set as a jelly. Freezing the jelly over a 3—day period in an ice-making machine, adjusted to work slowly, separated out ice and agar. The blocks were thawed out and the agar dried in the sun. The efficiency of extraction was over 800/A.
