We synthesize Co nanorod filled inside multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) by microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPECVD) and utilize off-axis electron holography to observe the remanent states of the filled metal nanorod inside MWCNTs at room. The MWCNTs grew up to 100-110 nm in diameter and 1.5-1.7 μm in length. The typical bright-field transmission electron microscope (TEM) images revealed both Co/Pd multisegment nanorod and Co nanorod filled inside MWCNTs on the same substrate. We have also performed energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) measurements to characterize the composition of metal filled inside MWCNTs. Based on high-resolution TEM measurements, we observed the face-centered-cubic (fcc) Co filled inside MWCNT. The component of magnetic induction was then measured to be 1.2±0.1 T, which is lower than the expected saturation magnetization of fcc Co of 1.7 T. The partial oxidation of the ferromagnetic metal during the process and the magnetization direction may play an important role in the determination of the quality of the remanent states. © 2008 IEEE.

We have experimentally investigated the crossed magnetic field effects on bulk melt-processed YBCO single domains. The samples were first permanently magnetized along their c-axis and then subjected to several cycles of a transverse magnetic field parallel to the ab planes. The magnetic properties along the c and ab directions were simultaneously measured using a couple of orthogonal pick-up coils as well as a Hall probe placed against the sample surface. The effects of both sweep amplitude and polarity were investigated. Field sweeps of alternate polarities are shown to affect the decay of the c-axis magnetization much more strongly than field sweeps of unique polarity do. However, the c-axis magnetization does not show any saturation even after a large number of field sweeps. Next, a micro-Hall probe scanning system was used to measure the distribution of magnetic induction over the top surface of the single domain subjected to the same combination of magnetic fields. The results are shown to be consistent with those determined with the sensing coils and bring out the role played by geometric effects.

A measurement system for magnetic fields and electric currents uses a single-core fluxgate device driven with a radio frequency excitation source and is provided with a means to indicate saturation of the core of the sensor. A means is provided for detecting overload of the sensor as the core approaches continuous saturation using a pair of demodulators and a comparator.

© 2014 AIP Publishing LLC. Superparamagnetic nanoparticles are employed in a broad range of applications that demand detailed magnetic characterization for superior performance, e.g., in drug delivery or cancer treatment. Magnetic hysteresis measurements provide information on saturation magnetization and coercive force for bulk material but can be equivocal for particles having a broad size distribution. Here, first-order reversal curves (FORCs) are used to evaluate the effective magnetic particle size and interaction between equally sized magnetic iron oxide (Fe2O3) nanoparticles with three different morphologies: (i) pure Fe2O3, (ii) Janus-like, and (iii) core/shell Fe2O3/SiO2synthesized using flame technology. By characterizing the distribution in coercive force and interaction field from the FORC diagrams, we find that the presence of SiO2in the core/shell structures significantly reduces the average coercive force in comparison to the Janus-like Fe2O3/SiO2and pure Fe2O3particles. This is attributed to the reduction in the dipolar interaction between particles, which in turn reduces the effective magnetic particle size. Hence, FORC analysis allows for a finer distinction between equally sized Fe2O3particles with similar magnetic hysteresis curves that can significantly influence the final nanoparticle performance.

Large grain, bulk Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) high temperature superconductors (HTS) have significant potential for use in a variety of practical applications that incorporate powerful quasi-permanent magnets. In the present work, we investigate how the trapped field of such magnets can be improved by combining bulk YBCO with a soft FeNi, ferromagnetic alloy. This involves machining the alloy into components of various shapes, such as cylinders and rings, which are attached subsequently to the top surface of a solid, bulk HTS cylinder. The effect of these modifications on the magnetic hysteresis curve and trapped field of the bulk superconductor at 77 K are then studied using pick-up coil and Hall probe measurements. The experimental data are compared to finite element modelling of the magnetic flux distribution using Campbell's algorithm. Initially we establish the validity of the technique involving pick-up coils wrapped around the bulk superconductor to obtain its magnetic hysteresis curve in a non-destructive way and highlight the difference between the measured signal and the true magnetization of the sample. We then consider the properties of hybrid ferromagnet/superconductor (F/S) structures. Hall probe measurements, together with the results of the model, establish that flux lines curve outwards through the ferromagnet, which acts, effectively, like a magnetic short circuit. Magnetic hysteresis curves show that the effects of the superconductor and the ferromagnet simply add when the ferromagnet is saturated fully by the applied field. The trapped field of the hybrid structure is always larger than that of the superconductor alone below this saturation level, and especially when the applied field is removed. The results of the study show further that the beneficial effects on the trapped field are enhanced when the ferromagnet covers the entire surface of the superconductor for different ferromagnetic components of various shapes and fixed volume. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. The structural and magnetic properties of Sm ion-implanted GaN with different Sm concentrations are investigated. XRD results do not show any peaks associated with second phase formation. Magnetic investigations performed by superconducting quantum interference device reveal ferromagnetic behavior with an ordering temperature above room temperature in all the implanted samples, while the effective magnetic moment per Sm obtained from saturation magnetization gives a much higher value than the atomic moment of Sm. These results could be explained by the phenomenological model proposed by Dhar et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94(2005) 037205, Phys. Rev. B 72(2005) 245203] in terms of a long-range spin polarization of the GaN matrix by the Sm atoms.

The cobalt ferrites with chemical composition Co1+xZnxFe2-2xO4 (r=0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4) were obtained with conventional solid reaction. The ZnO-doped samples have lower lattice constant than CoFe2O4 by adjusting Co ions to the octahedral sites. The results show that doping ZnO could extremely improve the magnetic properties. In comparison with pure CoFe2O4, the little ZnO-doped sample has higher permeability and much lower coercivity at the condition of a little decrease of magnetization saturation. Sample with x=0.1 shows evident magnetostrictive effect at the magnetic field of 30-60 mT while pure cobalt ferrite sample does not, though the saturation magnetostriction decreases. These indicate that ZnO-doping improves the magnetostrictive sensitivity of the cobalt ferrites and have potential applications in magnetoelectric devices and magnetic detector.

Diluted magnetic nonpolar GaN:Cu films have been fabricated by implanting Cu ions into unintentionally doped nonpolar a-plane(1 1 (2) over bar 0) GaN films and a subsequent thermal annealing process. The structural, morphological and magnetic characteristics of the samples have been investigated by means of high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The sample shows a clear ferromagnetism behavior at room temperature. It is significantly shown that with a Cu concentration as low as 0.75% the sample exhibits a saturation magnetization about 0.65 mu(B)/Cu atom. Moreover, the possible origin of the ferromagnetism for the sample was also discussed briefly. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Diluted-magnetic nonpolar GaN:Cu films have been fabricated by implanting Cu ions into p-type nonpolar a-plane (1120) GaN films with a subsequent thermal annealing process. The impact of the implantation dose on the structural. morphological and magnetic characteristics of the samples have been investigated by means of high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD). atomic force microscopy (AFM), and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The XRD and AFM analyses show that the structural and morphological characteristics of samples deteriorated with the increase of implantation dose. According to the SQUID analysis. obvious room-temperature ferromagnetic properties of samples were detected. Moreover, the saturation magnetization per Cu atom decreased as the implantation dose increased. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Cobalt-doped ZnO (Zn1-xCoxO) thin films were fabricated by reactive magnetron cosputtering. The processing conditions were carefully designed to avoid the occurrence of Co precipitations. The films are c-axis oriented, and the solubility limit of Co in ZnO is less than 17%, determined by x-ray diffraction. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements show Co ions have a chemical valance of 2+. In this paper, hysteresis loops were clearly observed for Zn1-xCoxO films at room temperature. The coercive field, as well as saturation magnetization per Co atom, decreases with increasing Co content, within the range of 0.07

Structural and magnetic characteristics of Fe3-xSnxO4 (x < 0.3) nanoparticles synthesized using the precipitation exchange method have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, Mossbauer spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and magnetization measurement. The mean particle dimension decreases from 8 to 6 nm, the lattice parameters enlarge, the saturation magnetization decreases, as well as the magnetization and the coercive field increase, with increasing tin-content. The paramagnetic property of the specimens indicates that the replacement of Fe3+ by Sn4+ on the octahedral sites of Fe3O4 causes a progressive lowering of the Curie temperature and the Curie temperatures of the materials are all lower than that of crystallite tin-doped magnetite. This striking debasing is due to the lessening of the grain size. This is the smallest size reported thus far for paramagnetic tin-doped magnetite particles. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. A systematic study of syntheses and magnetic properties of the Nd-3 Fe29-xCrx (x=4.5, 4.7, 5.0, and 5.5) compounds has been performed. The single-phase compounds of Nd3Fe29-xCrx can be formed in the range 4.5 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 5.5. The Curie temperature Tc, the saturation magnetization M-S at 4.2 K, the anisotropy field H-A at 4.2 K and room temperature, and the intra-sublattice exchange coupling parameter j(FeFe) at 4.2 K for the Nd3Fe29-xCrx compounds decrease with increasing Cr composition from x=4.5 to 5.5, respectively. Nitrogenation and carbonation, unlike hydrogenation, result mainly in improvements of the Curie temperature, the saturation magnetization and the anisotropy field at 4.2 K and room temperature for the Nd3Fe29-xCrx compounds compared with their parent compounds.

The crystallographic and intrinsic magnetic properties of hydride R3Fe29-xTxHy (R=Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy; T=V and Cr) have been investigated. The lattice constants and the unit cell volume of R3Fe29-xTxHy decrease with increasing R atomic number from Nd to Dy, except for Ce, reflecting the lanthanide contraction. Regular anisotropic expansions, mainly along the a- and b-axis rather than along the c-axis, are observed for all the compounds upon hydrogenation. Hydrogenation leads to an increase in Curie temperature. First-order magnetization processes (FOMP) occur in magnetic fields of around 1.5 T and 4.0 T at 4.2 K for Nd3Fe24.5Cr4.5H5.0 and Tb(3)Fc(27.0)Cr(2.0)H(2.8), and around 1.4 T at room temperature for Gd3Fe28.0Cr1.0H4.2 Abnormal crystallographic and magnetic properties of Ce3Fe29-xTxHy suggest that the Ce ion is non-triply ionized.

Sm3Fe26.7V2.3N4 nitrides and Sm3Fe26.7V2.3Cy carbides have been synthesized by gas-solid phase reaction. Their hard magnetic properties have been investigated by means of additional ball-milling at room temperature. The saturation magnetization of Sm3Fe26.7V2.3N4 almost decreases linearly with increasing ball-milling time t, but that of Sm3Fe26.7V2.3Cy has no obvious change when the ball-milling time increases from t = 1 to 28 h. As a preliminary result, the maximum remanence B-r of 0.94 and 0.88 T, the coercivity mu(0i)H(C) of 0.75 and 0.25 T, and the maximum energy product (BH) of 108.5 and 39.1 kJ/m(3) for their resin-bonded permanent magnets are achieved, respectively, by ball-milling at 293 K. A systematic investigation of crystallographic and intrinsic magnetic properties of the hydrides R3Fe29 - xVxHy (R = Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy) has been performed in this work. The lattice constants a, b, and c and the unit cell volume of R3Fe29 - xVxHy decrease with increasing rare-earth atomic number from Nd to Dy, except for Ce, reflecting the lanthanide contraction. Hydrogenation results in regular anisotropic expansions along the a-, b-, and c-axes in this series of hydrides. Abnormal crystallographic and magnetic properties of Ce3Fe27.5V1.5H6.5, like Ce3Fe27.5V1.5, suggest that the Ce ion is non-triply ionized. Hydrogenation leads to the increase in both Curie temperature for all the compounds and in the saturation magnetization at 4.2 K and RT for R3Fe29 - xVx with R = Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, and Dy, except for Tb. Hydrogenation also leads to a decrease in the anisotropy field at 4.2 K and RT for R3Fe29 - xVx with R = Y, Ce, Nd, Gd, Tb, and Dy, except for Sm. The Ce3Fe27.5V1.5 and Gd3Fe28.4V0.6 show the larger storage of hydrogen with y = 6.5 and 6.9 in these hydrides. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
