Background: Magnesium (Mg) use has the potential to promote bronchodilatation and to improve lung function in obstructive diseases. IV administration of Mg during exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has led to improved peak flow. This study aimed to investigate the effects of acute IV Mg loading on respiratory parameters of stable COPD patients. Material/Methods: This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study. Twenty-two male COPD patients (64 +/- 6 years old, FEV1: 49 +/- 20%) received an IV infusion of 2 g of magnesium sulfate or placebo on two distinct occasions. Spirometry and mouth maximal respiratory pressures were obtained before and 45 minutes after the infusions. Results: Mg use led to significant changes in functional respiratory capacity (-0.48 1,95% CI: -0.96, -0.01), inspiratory capacity (0.21 1,95% CI: 0.04, 0.37). The treatment was also associated with a marginally significant decrease in residual volume (-0.47 1,95% CI: -0.96, 0.02, p=0.06). Conclusions: Acute IV Mg loading in stable COPD patients was associated with a reduction in lung hyperinflation and improvement of respiratory muscle strength. The clinical potential for chronic magnesium supplementation in COPD deserves further investigation.

Magnesium may influence blood pressure by modulating vascular tone and structure through its effects on myriad biochemical reactions that control vascular contraction/dilation, growth/apoptosis, differentiation and inflammation. Magnesium acts as a calcium channel antagonist, it stimulates production of vasodilator prostacyclins and nitric oxide and it alters vascular responses to vasoconstrictor agents. Mammalian cells regulate Mg(2+) concentration through special transport systems that have only recently been characterized. Magnesium efflux occurs via Na(2+)-dependent and Na(2+)-independent pathways. Mg(2+) influx is controlled by recently cloned transporters including Mrs2p, SLC41A1, SLC41A2, ACDP2, MagT1, TRPM6 and TRPM7. Alterations in some of these systems may contribute to hypomagnesemia and intracellular Mg(2+) deficiency in hypertension and other cardiovascular pathologies. In particular, increased Mg(2+) efflux through dysregulation of the vascular Na(+)/Mg(2+) exchanger and decreased Mg(2+) influx due to defective vascular and renal TRPM6/7 expression/activity may be important in altered vasomotor tone and consequently in blood pressure regulation. The present review discusses the role of Mg(2+) in vascular biology and implications in hypertension and focuses on the putative transport systems that control magnesium homeostasis in the vascular system. Much research is still needed to clarify the exact mechanisms of cardiovascular Mg(2+) regulation and the implications of aberrant cellular Mg(2+) transport and altered cation status in the pathogenesis of hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases.

This study aimed to compare Petrifilm Aerobic Count (AC) plates and the conventional pour plate methodology using the de Man-Rogosa-Sharpe (MRS) agar for the enumeration of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in fermented milks (FMs), with different starter cultures added. FM samples (n = 66) were collected and plated on both methodologies, with incubation under anaerobic conditions at 35C for 48 h. The count results were compared by analysis of variance (P <= 0.05) and regression analysis. No differences between the mean counts obtained by both methodologies were observed, even when distinct FMs were compared. Considering all samples, a high correlation level was obtained between Petrifilm AC and MRS agar (r = 0.92), but these indexes were lower in FMs with Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus (r = 0.90) and Lactobacillus fortis (r = 0.81). Despite some slight interferences, Petrifilm AC has proven to be a convenient methodology on enumerating LAB in FM.

Most lungfish tooth plates, that are arranged in radiating ridges derived from the fusion of separate cusps in young juveniles, are based on a framework of enamel, mantle dentine and bone that encloses a mass of specialized dentines forming the occlusal surface. In most taxa, the specialized dentines are interdenteonal and circumdenteonal dentine, but a few derived genera have petrodentine as well. Petrodentine, as originally defined, describes a specific form of hypermineralized dentine in adult tooth plates of the Recent African lungfish Protopterus. The ontogeny of fossil and Recent lungfish tooth plates demonstrates that petrodentine is derived by continuous enhancement of the hard tissue of the primary core of the initially isolated cusps of the tooth plate, and that interdenteonal dentine with denteons of circumdenteonal dentine is a secondary development in the tooth plate around and below the first formed cusps of the ridges. In dipnoans that lack petrodentine in adults the primary core of the cusps is not enhanced, but is removed by wear. The hard tissues of the dipnoan tooth plate provide useful characters for defining dipnoan taxa, as do the differing arrangements of the tissues in each species. Details of the arrangement of the enclosed specialized dentines are surprisingly variable among genera, and are significant for the structure and function of the tooth plate. Little regularity of structure is discernible in the histology of tooth plates of early dipnoans, but derived genera have more predictable structure. Consistent with other uniquely dipnoan characters, like the composition of the dermal skull, an evolutionary progression is evident within the group in the fine structure of the dentition, and, as with the bones of the dermal skull, little similarity is demonstrable between the dentines of dipnoans and tetrapods.

The acousto-ultrasonic (AU) input-output characteristics for contact-type transmitting and receiving transducers coupled to composite laminated plates are considered in this paper. Combining a multiple integral transform method, an ordinary discrete layer theory for the laminates and some simplifying assumptions for the electro-mechanical transduction behaviour of the transducers, an analytical solution is developed which can deal with all the wave processes involved in the AU measurement system, i.e, wave generation, wave propagation and wave reception. The spectral response of the normal contact pressure sensed by the receiving transducer due to an arbitrary input pulse excited by the transmitting transducer is obtained. To validate the new analytical-numerical spectral technique in the low-frequency regime, the results are compared with Mindlin plate theory solutions. Based on the analytical results, numerical calculations are carried out to investigate the influence of various external parameters such as frequency content of the input pulse, transmitter/receiver spacing and transducer aperture on the output of the measurement system. The results show that the presented analytical-numerical procedure is an effective tool for understanding the input-output characteristics of the AU technique for laminated plates. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the population pharmacokinetics of magnesium from sparse observational data in patients with preeclampsia. STUDY DESIGN: Serum magnesium concentrations (1-11 per patient) were obtained retrospectively from the records of 116 patients with preeclampsia who had a loading dose of magnesium sulfate (16 or 20 mmol), followed by a maintenance dose (1 mmol/h) over an average of 28 hours. Population clearance, volume of distribution, and the baseline magnesium concentration were estimated using the NONMEM program. RESULTS: The following population typical values, together with the interpatient variability (expressed as coefficient of variation) were obtained with the use of a 1-compartment model: systemic clearance, 4.28 L/h (37.3%); volume of distribution, 32.3 L (32.1%); baseline concentration, 0.811 mmol/L (18.5%). The average half-life was 5.2 hours. Clonus was not obtunded in 4 patients whose serum magnesium concentrations were similar to the average concentration of 1.7 mmol/L. The variability remaining unexplained after the population model was fitted to the data was 6.5% to 10.8%. CONCLUSION: This study extended knowledge of the pharmacokinetic disposition of magnesium in preeclampsia. The results are potentially useful for the calculation of loading and maintenance doses, particularly when the relationship between serum concentration and effect in preeclampsia is clarified.

A semi-analytical analysis of free vibration of plates with cross-sectional discontinuities due to abrupt changes in thickness is presented. A basic square element divided into suitable subdomains dependent upon the positions of these abrupt changes is used as the basic building element, Admissible functions that satisfy the essential or geometric boundary conditions are used to define the transverse deflection of each subdomain. Continuities in the displacement, slope, moment and higher derivatives between adjacent subdomains are enforced at the interconnecting edges. The resulting global energy functional from the proper assembly of the coupled strain and kinetic energy contributions of each subdomain is then minimized via the Ritz procedure to extract the frequencies and mode shapes. Contour plots of a range of new mode shapes are presented for the enhancement of understanding the dynamic behavior of this class of plates, (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd, All rights reserved.

The technique of permanently attaching interdigital transducers (IDT) to either flat or curved structural surfaces to excite single Lamb wave mode has demonstrated great potential for quantitative non-destructive evaluation and smart materials design, In this paper, the acoustic wave field in a composite laminated plate excited by an IDT is investigated. On the basis of discrete layer theory and a multiple integral transform method, an analytical-numerical approach is developed to evaluate the surface velocity response of the plate due to the IDTs excitation. In this approach, the frequency spectrum and wave number spectrum of the output of IDT are obtained directly. The corresponding time domain results are calculated by applying a standard inverse fast Fourier transformation technique. Numerical examples are presented to validate the developed method and show the ability of mode selection and isolation. A new effective way of transfer function estimation and interpretation is presented by considering the input wave number spectrum in addition to the commonly used input frequency spectrum. The new approach enables the simple physical evaluation of the influences of IDT geometrical features such as electrode finger widths and overall dimension and excitation signal properties on the input-output characteristics of IDT. Finally, considering the convenience of Mindlin plate wave theory in numerical computations as well as theoretical analysis, the validity is examined of using this approximate theory to design IDT for the excitation of the first and second anti-symmetric Lamb modes. Experimental studies have been undertaken, involving in situ observations of the interaction between cover gas mixtures and molten magnesium. It has been shown that, in the presence of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), the contact angle between solid MgO and molten magnesium is reduced, resulting in the wetting of MgO by magnesium metal. In contrast, it was observed that the absence of SF6 results in a large contact angle, poor wetting of the MgO by magnesium metal and a non-adherent surface film. It is proposed that the formation of an adherent, protective surface film under a cover gas mixture containing SF6 is due to capillary forces acting within the film.

The technique of permanently attaching piezoelectric transducers to structural surfaces has demonstrated great potential for quantitative non-destructive evaluation and smart materials design. For thin structural members such as composite laminated plates, it has been well recognized that guided Lamb wave techniques can provide a very sensitive and effective means for large area interrogation. However, since in these applications multiple wave modes are generally generated and the individual modes are usually dispersive, the received signals are very complex and difficult to interpret. An attractive way to deal with this problem has recently been introduced by applying piezoceramic transducer arrays or interdigital transducer (IDT) technologies. In this paper, the acoustic wave field in composite laminated plates excited by piezoceramic transducer arrays or IDT is investigated. Based on dynamic piezoelectricity theory, a discrete layer theory and a multiple integral transform method, an analytical-numerical approach is developed to evaluate the input impedance characteristics of the transducer and the surface velocity response of the plate. The method enables the quantitative evaluation of the influence of the electrical characteristics of the excitation circuit, the geometric and piezoelectric properties of the transducer array, and the mechanical and geometrical features of the laminate. Numerical results are presented to validate the developed method and show the ability of single wave mode selection and isolation. The results show that the interaction between individual elements of the piezoelectric array has a significant influence on the performance of the IDT, and these effects can not be neglected even in the case of low frequency excitation. It is also demonstrated that adding backing materials to the transducer elements can be used to improve the excitability of specific wave modes. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
