Temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity of vapor grown carbon nanofiber/epoxy composites with different filler dispersion levels

The influence of the dispersion of vapor grown carbon nanofibers (VGCNF) on the electrical properties of VGCNF/epoxy composites has been studied. A homogeneous dispersion of the VGCNF does not imply better electrical properties. The presence of well distributed clusters appears to be a key factor for increasing composite conductivity. It is also shown that the main conduction mechanism has an ionic nature for concentrations below the percolation threshold, while above the percolation threshold it is dominated by hopping between the fillers. Finally, using the granular system theory it is possible to explain the origin of conduction at low temperatures.

The role of disorder on the AC and DC electrical conductivity of vapour grown carbon nanofibre/epoxy composites

Four dispersion methods were used for the preparation of vapour grown carbon nanofibre (VGCNF)/epoxy composites. It is shown that each method induces certain levels of VGCNF dispersion and distribution within the matrix, and that these have a strong influence on the composite electrical properties. A homogenous VGCNF dispersion does not necessarily imply higher electrical conductivity. In fact, it is concluded that the presence of well distributed clusters, rather than a fine dispersion, is more important for achieving larger conductivities for a given VGCNF concentration. It is also found that the conductivity can be described by a weak disorder regime.

Desempenho empresarial e o valor da empresa no mercado de capitais: evidência empírica para o mercado de capitais português

The main objective of this paper is to analyse the effect of firms’ performance indicators in explaining the price of stocks in the Portuguese capital market, using a fundamental analysis. In the empirical setting, firms’ performance indicators are gathered into two groups: (1) economic and financial indicators and (2) stock market indicators. Using a sample of 38 firms quoted at Euronext Lisbon, estimates are obtained trough an Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) model and report to December, 31 2007. Results suggest that performance indicators are able to explain the firms’ stock market price. There is a significant positive impact of sales growth and of payout ratio, while we find a statistically significant negative effect of the firm’s financial autonomy on the stock market price for the majority of firms quoted at Euronext Lisbon.

The European Union considers it appropriate to further discuss how to strengthen the independence of the auditors to address conflicts of interest inherent in the current scenario, characterized by factors such as the appointment of auditors for the audited company, low turnover or different service delivery to the audit. This paper aims to realize the expectations of the factors that affect, both positively and negatively, the auditor maintains its independence from the client.

Evidência empírica dos factores explicativos dos dividendos distribuídos pelas empresas cotadas na EURONEXT Lisboa

Companies’ decision to pay dividends to its shareholders is a topic that has received increasing attention in business finance. This paper provides an additional contribution to the development of this topic focusing on the analysis of the determinants of dividend policy by issuing companies in the Portuguese capital market. For this purpose, we use a set of financial and economic information specific to each firm to explain its dividend per share. The sample used in the empirical study contains 54 firms and it refers to the 2005-2009 period. Results suggest that net income, dividends per share paid in the previous financial year and return on assets all present a positive and statistically significant effect on dividends per share paid in a given financial year. Moreover, results show that Lintner’s (1956) model appears to be valid in explaining dividend policy by issuing companies in Euronext Lisbon.

Error bounds for low-rank approximations of the first exponential integral kernel

A hierarchical matrix is an efficient data-sparse representation of a matrix, especially useful for large dimensional problems. It consists of low-rank subblocks leading to low memory requirements as well as inexpensive computational costs. In this work, we discuss the use of the hierarchical matrix technique in the numerical solution of a large scale eigenvalue problem arising from a finite rank discretization of an integral operator. The operator is of convolution type, it is defined through the first exponential-integral function and, hence, it is weakly singular. We develop analytical expressions for the approximate degenerate kernels and deduce error upper bounds for these approximations. Some computational results illustrating the efficiency and robustness of the approach are presented.

A internacionalização das empresas portuguesas: a experiência brasileira

O artigo tem por objetivo investigar a internacionalização dos investimentos portugueses no Brasil de meados dos anos 1990 até o começo da década de 2000. Foram registradas cerca de 400 empresas lusitanas no país em 2003. Previamente, colocam-se várias questões empíricas e teóricas, e destaca-se a relevância do caso à luz dos grandes modelos de referência em matéria de internacionalização de empresas, em particular a escola nórdica (ou modelo de Uppsala) e o paradigma OLI de John Dunning. Enfatiza-se em seguida a contribuição dos determinantes culturais, globalmente considerados, desde o início do processo de investimento luso-brasileiro. Nesse contexto, o papel da língua comum é enfatizado. De passagem, analisam-se diversos tópicos, inclusive o da influência por vezes paradoxal da proximidade cultural sobre o investimento internacional. Por outro lado, os resultados a que foi possível chegar ajudam a preencher as lacunas deixadas pelas insuficiências teóricas ligadas à negligência do movimento internacional de fatores.

RESGATANDO O NEXO GOVERNANÇAGESTÃO INTERNACIONAL: POR UMA NOVA ORDEM EM GESTÃO

Este artigo vai além da literatura anglo-americana de gestão internacional (GI) e negócios internacionais (NI) e da ordem neoliberal ocidental correspondente,por meio de uma abordagem trans/interdisciplinar que resgata o nexo governança-gestão internacional. Com base nos fundamentos da transmodernidade pluriversal e no reconhecimento da dimensão de geopolítica que tem sido marginalizada por NI/GI, a análise do processo pós-1990 de (re)construção de uma ordem luso-brasileira ou brasilo-portuguesa que desafia a hegemonia da ordem neoliberal é efetuada por meio do resgate da área de relações internacionais (RI) e da dessubalternização de conhecimentos locais baseados no conceito de diplomacia econômica. O artigo mostra como e por que organizações estatais e privadas mobilizam e constituem o nexo governança-gestão para (re)construir uma ordem luso-brasileira e ajudar a superar restrições históricas impostas pelo eurocentrismo. No final, o artigo defende a libertação de NI/GI para ajudar a construir uma nova ordem em gestão para um mundo em que diversos mundos e conhecimentos possam coexistir.

Portuguese impact on Goa: Lusotopic, Lusophonic, Lusophilic?

Não é muito dificil identificar e analisar o impacto linguístico (lusofónico) ou não-linguístico (lusotópico) em Goa, mas torna-se difícil e melindrosa qualquer tentativa de analisar o impacto lusofílico. Recentemente, na correspondência que tive com um delegado da Fundação Oriente em Goa, ele escrevia: “É um assunto complicado, quando se tenta compreender as atitudes dos grupos pró- e contra os Portugueses. É difícil encontrar em Goa alguém que se manifeste abertamente como goês pró-Portugal ou como luso-goês. É muito diferente em Sri Lanka, Malaca ou noutras regiões. Não duvido que a lusofilia está presente, mas escondida e encoberta. Manifesta-se de vez em quando por motivos de conveniência." São estas impressões de um cidadão português em Goa que tentamos compreender neste ensaio com base nas experiências históricas dos goeses.

Goa: An Autorized Story

Este artigo recensão da obra Goa: A daughter’s story da autora goesa Maria Aurora Couto, editada por Penguin/Viking, New Delhi, 2004, pp. 436 é uma autobiografia histórico-cultural de Goa. De naturalidade goesa, mas que viveu e se formou na Índia britânica e no Reino Unido, a autora revela a sua simpatia e empatia pela sua cultura luso-goesa, mas sem evitar críticas. Casada com um oficial dos quadros administrativos da Índia, teve a oportunidade de acompanhar o seu marido quando este foi nomeado conselheiro do governador militar de Goa logo após a ocupação de Goa pela Índia em 1961. Continua hoje a participar activamente na vida cultural de Goa.

"Waking up from Medieval Slumber"

When the book Medieval Goa first appeared three decades ago (Delhi: Concept, 1979), it represented a significant break in the tradition of Indo-Portuguese historiography, until then markedly Luso-Indian, even when Goan native historians were the authors. This was acknowledged by prominent historians like C R Boxer, M N Pearson, A Disney, J Wicki and others who reviewed the book in international journals of history. The colonial culture and the political climate were not helpful for the promotion of a critical approach.

A "história pátria" entre dois monumentos: o passado colonial nas notas de rodapé da História geral do Brasil e da História da colonização portuguesa no Brasil

Este artigo discute a relação discursiva constituída entre duas obras historiográficas: a História geral do Brasil, de Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen e a História da colonização portuguesa no Brasil, empreendimento coletivo com vistas a difundir boa imagem do processo colonizador da América portuguesa. A hipótese é que encontramos registrado em tais obras um substrato discursivo comum referente ao passado colonial luso-brasileiro com implicações teóricas e epistemológicas desse fenômeno ocorrido ao longo de suas notas de rodapé.

Fisioterapia no transplante hepático: da necessidade ao bem-estar

A intervenção do fisioterapeuta processa-se de modo holístico com vista à obtenção da máxima funcionalidade do indivíduo portador de doença. Objectivo do estudo – Mostrar e contextualizar os cuidados de saúde prestados pela equipa de fisioterapia no Hospital de Curry Cabral aos utentes submetidos a transplante hepático, fundamentados numa experiência de 4 anos de intervenção específica nesta área.

Polineuropatia Amiloidotica Familiar (PAF) – Amiloidose sistémica heredo-degenerativa e autossómica dominante, cuja manifestação predominante é a polineuropatia mista sensitiva motora e autonómica. Mutação no cromossoma 18: substituição da Valina por Metionina TTR mutada e respectiva deposição sistémica. Objectivos do estudo: verificar o impacto de um programa de exercício combinado na composição corporal, na força muscular, na capacidade funcional, nos níveis de fadiga e nos níveis de actividade física.
