The growth of InAsxSb1-x films on (100) GaSb substrates by liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) has been investigated and epitaxial InAs0.3Sb0.7 films with InAs0.9Sb0.09 buffer layers have been successfully obtained. The low X-ray rocking curve FHWM values of InAs0.3Sb0.7 layer shows the high quality of crystal-orientation structure. Hall measurements show that the highest electron mobility in the samples obtained is 2.9 x 10(4) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and the carrier density is 2.78 x 10(16)cm(-3) at room temperature (RT). The In As0.3Sb0.7 films grown on (10 0) GaSb substrates exhibit excellent optical performance with a cut-off wavelength of 12 mu m. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Lattice matched Ga_(1-x)In_xAs_ySb_(1-y) quaternary alloy films for thermophotovoltaic cells were successfully grown on n-type GaSb substrates by liquid phase epitaxy. Mirror-like surfaces for the epitaxial layers were achieved and evaluated by atomic force microscopy. The composition of the Ga_(1-x)In_xAs_ySb_(1-y) layer was characterized by energy dispersive X-ray analysis with the result that x = 0.2, y = 0.17. The absorption edges of the Ga_(1-x)In_xAs_ySb_(1-y) films were determined to be 2. 256μm at room temperature by Fourier transform infrared transmission spectrum analysis, corresponding to an energy gap of 0.55eV. Hall measurements show that the highest obtained electron mobility in the undoped p-type samples is 512cm2~/(V·s) and the carrier density is 6. 1×10~(16)cm~(-3) at room temperature. Finally, GaInAsSb based thermophotovoltaic cells in different structures with quantum efficiency values of around 60% were fabricated and the spectrum response characteristics of the cells are discussed.

Micro-banded textures developed from thin films of a main-chain thermotropic liquid crystalline chloro-poly(aryl ether ketone) in the melt were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). selective area electron diffraction, and atomic force microscopy techniques. The micro-banded textures were formed in the copolymer thin films after annealing at temperatures between 320 and 330degreesC, where a highly ordered smectic crystalline phase is formed without mechanical shearing. The micro-banded textures displayed a sinusoidal-like periodicity with a spacing of 150 nm and an amplitude of 2 rim. The long axis of the banded texture was parallel to the b-axis of an orthorhombic unit cell. In the convex regions, the molecular chains exhibited a homeotropic alignment, i.e. the chain direction was parallel to the film normal. In the concave re-ions, the molecular chains possessed a tilted alignment. In addition to the effects of annealing temperatures and times, the thickness of the film played a vital role in the formation of the banded texture. A possible formation mechanism of this banded texture vas also suggested and discussed. It was suggested that the micro-bands were formed during cooling.

The banded textures in the films of a thermotropic liquid crystalline poly(aryl ether ketone) containing a lateral chloro group have been studied by means of transmission electron microscopy(TEM), electron diffraction(ED) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The crystallization-induced Landed texture without external shear can be formed when the thin films were annealed at the temperature range(320-330 degrees C) of the liquid crystalline state from the melt, The results show that the banded regions have high orientation of single crystal based on the orthorhombic packing and the growing direction of the Lands is along the b axis of the crystals, This kind of single crystal-like bands is due to the different orientation of the packing molecular chains, The molecular chains of the dark bands in the bright field electron micrograph are perpendicular to the film plane, while the ones of the bright Lands are tilt along the b axis with the tilt angle upto +/-20 degrees.

The homoepitaxial crystallization in the films of a thermotropic liquid crystalline chloro-ply(aryl ether ketone) is studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED). The homoepitaxy takes place in the temperature range 330-320 degreesC, in which a highly-ordered smectic crystalline phase of the copolymer with a single-crystal-like banded structure is formed during the cooling process from the isotropic melt. The homoepitaxial crystallizations with angles of 32 degrees and 122 degrees between the two b axes are the major populations observed, and possess epitaxial contact planes of (100)(I)-(210)(II) and (010)(I)-(210)(II); respectively.

An alignment study of a liquid crystalline copolyether TPP-7/11(5/5) thin films has been carried out in a 10 kV . cm(-1) electrostatic field parallel to the thin film surface normal. This copolyether possesses a negative dielectric anisotropy. The chain molecules are homogeneously aligned in the electric field and they form two-dimensionally ordered lamellae in a tilted columnar phase when the samples were cooled to room temperature. It is observed that the chain molecules are splayed to form bent lamellae and the chain direction is perpendicular to the tangential direction of the lamellar surfaces. These lamellae thus become replicas of the chain orientation, Due to the flexoelectric effect and density fluctuation on the thin film free surface, disclinations having topological strength s = 1, c = pi /4 and defect walls form. These s = 1 disclinations possesses both left- and right-handednesses. Discussion of the defect formations have been attempted.

A liquid crystalline (LC) copolyether has been synthesized from 1-(4-hydroxy-4'-biphenyl)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane with 1,7-dibromoheptane and 1,11-dibromoundecane with a 50/50 (both in %) equal composition of the 7- and 11-methylene monomers [coTPP-7/11(5/5)]. A mono-domain with a homeotropic alignment can be induced by a thin film surface in the LC phase. When an electrostatic field is applied to the surface-induced mono-domains parallel to the thin film surface normal, the molecular alignment undergoes a change from the homeotropic to uniaxial homogeneous arrangement. However, when the field is applied to a direction perpendicular to the thin film surface normal. the molecular alignment is about 10 degrees -tilt with respect to the homeotropic alignment toward the a*-axis. This is because the permanent dipole moment of the copolyether is not right vertical to the molecular direction. The calculation of molecular dipoles indicates that the permanent dipole moment of this copolyether is about 70 degrees away from the molecular axis, which leads to a negative dielectric anisotropy. It is speculated that the 10 degrees- rather than 20 degrees -tilt is due to a balance between the alignment induced by the electrostatic field and the surface. In the electrostatic field, molecules are subjected to a torque tau, which is determined by the permanent dipole moment P and the electrostatic field E: tau = P x E. The molecular realignment in both parallel and perpendicular directions to the thin film surface normal is determined by satisfying the condition of tau = P x E = 0. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Three organo-soluble polyimide powders have been synthesized. Their imidization was verified by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The amorphous morphology of their thin films were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Polyimide thin films were prepared by solution casting or spin coating. UV-visible transmission spectra of thin films revealed that they are almost transparent in the range of visible light. With in-plane orientation, revealed by FTIR spectra, negative birefringence (Delta n) of thin films were observed, and refractive indices of the thin films along the film plane (n(TE)) and normal to the plane (n(TM)) were measured by a prism coupler. Because of negative birefringence of the thin films, they tan be substituted for the compensation films for twisted nematic liquid crystal displays (TN-LCDs) to extend their viewing angles. In this paper, a 90 degrees C TN-LCD and 120 degrees C TN-LCD were taken as examples to show the compensation effect of thin films of a qualified polyimide. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. The disadvantages of NW-TN-LCD (normally white twisted nematic liquid crystal display) are discussed. The reason that the negative birefringent polyimide thin films are used to compensate NW-TN-LCD to decrease off-axis leakage, improve contrast ratios and enlarge viewing angeles is explained. A certain polyimide thin film is taken as an example to show the compensation effect on NW-TN-LCD. (C) 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Copper phthalocyanine doped polymethacrylate Langmuir-Blodgett films were transferred to align a nematic liquid crystal 5CB, It is found that the pre-tilt angle of the liquid crystal can be controlled with the variation of the doped copper phthalocyanine molecular ratio and is correlated with the dichroic ratio of the aligning layer. The polarity of the aligning layer is regarded as the most likely underlying factor that causes the different LC alignment configurations. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

A series of liquid crystalline copolymers, poly{2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate}-co-{6-[4-(S-2-methyl-1-butyloxycarbonylphenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate} with an azobenzene moiety as photoreactive mesogenic unit, was prepared and investigated by using DSC, polarized optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results show that these polymers exhibit smectic phases. Z-type Langmuir-Blodgett films of these copolymers were successfully deposited onto calcium fluoride and quartz. Reversible homeotropic and planar liquid crystal alignments were induced by using the photochromism of the LB films of one of the copolymers containing 20.6 mol % of the azo unit.

The hydrosol of SnO2 nanoparticles are prepared by the method of colloid chemistry. The free piling up process of nanosized SnO2 colloid particles are investigated at the gas-liquid interface by LB and Brewster Angle Microscopy techniques. The result indicates that solid state monolayer and multilayer of SnO2 nanoparticles can be formed at the gas-liquid interface only by aging the sol in air or compressing it without amphiphiles surfactant.

Monolayers of liquid-crystalline polyacrylate containing para-nitro azobenzene (HP6) on the water subphase were characterized by the surface pressure (pi)-area per monomer unit (A) isotherm and were successfully transferred onto glass substrates by the vertical lifting method. The monolayer Langmuis-Blodgett (LB) films transferred at different surface pressures were studied by electron diffraction. The thickness of the monolayer LB film was measured by the transmission electron microscopy folding method. The results of the electron diffraction of the monolayer LB films of HP6 showed that a two-dimensional arrangement exists in the transferred films. According to the results of the pi-A isotherm, electron diffraction and the measured thickness of the monolayer LB film, a molecular arrangement model of HP6 on the water subphase was proposed. The ordered monolayer formation of HP6 showed it to be promising as a second-order non-linear optical material.
