Vibrational overtone spectroscopy of molecules containing X-H oscillators (X = C, N, O...) has become an effective tool for the study of molecular structure, dynamics, inter and intramolecular interactions, conformational aspects and substituent effects in aliphatic and aromatic compounds. In the present work, the author studied the NIR overtone spectra of some liquid phase organic compounds. The analysis of the CH, NH and OH overtones yielded important structural information about these systems. In an attempt to get information on electronic energy levels, we studied the pulsed Nd:YAG laser induced fluorescence spectra of certain organic compounds. The pulsed laser Raman spectra of some organic compounds are also studied. The novel high resolution technique of near infrared tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) is used to record the rotational structure of the second OH overtone spectrum of 2-propanol. The spectral features corresponding to the different molecular conformations could be identified from the high resolution spectrum. The whole work described in this thesis is divided into five chapters.

Electrical gas discharges have been the subject of numerous investigations from the last century due to their growing interest in technological and fundamental applications. Absorption of electromagnetic radiation by a gas discharge result into a change in electrical impedance due to a significant perturbations in the steady state population of excited levels and the degree of ionization. This change in impedance produced by resonant absorption of radiation is known as optogalvanic COG) effect. where as that is produced by injecting electrons in to the discharge by photoelectric emission is usually known as photoemission optogalvanic (FOG) effect. With the development of lasers and sophisticated electronic equipment. these effects have established their importance in analytical and spectroscopic measurements. The present thesis deals with the work carried out by the author in the field optogalvanic effect during the past few years at the Department of Physics in Cochin University of Science| and "Fechnology. The results and the observation are summarized in nine chapters and the references to the literature is made at the end of each chapter

In the pre—laser era it was difficult to believe that the optical properties of a medium depend upon the intensity of the radiation incident on it. The basis for this conclusion is that the electric field strength associated with the conventional light sources used before the advent of lasers was much smaller than (103 V/cm) the field sttrengths of atomic or interatomic fields (2 107 —- 10” V/cm). The radiation with such low intensity is not able to affect atomic fields to the extent of changing optical parameters. The invention of laser in 1960 was a turning point. The high degree of coherence of the laser radiation provides high spatial concentration of optical power. With the availability of the femtosecond lasers it has become possible to get extremely high peak powers 2 1013 W/cmz). At such high fields, the relationship between electric ‘polarization P and the electric field strength E ceases to be linear and several nonlinear effects begin to occur. Nonlinear absorption, a branch of nonlinear optics, refers to the interaction between radiation and matter accompanied by absorption of more than one photon. Nonlinear absorption has acquired great importance after the invention of high power lasers. One of the objectives of the present work is to investigate the nonlinear absorption processes occurring in fullerene, selected organic solvents and laser dyes. Fullerenes and laser dyes were chosen because of their highly nonlinear behaviour. Fullerenes, the most beautiful among molecules, offer fascinating field of research owinglto their significant structural properties. As toluene, benzene and carbon disulphide are themost widely used solvents for fullerenes, it seems important to study the nonlinear properties of these liquids as well. Like fullerenes, laser dyes also possess highly delocalized 7r electrons which are responsible for their nonlinear absorption. Dye lasers were the fulfillment of an experimenter’s pipe dream - to have a laser that is easily tunable over a wide range of wavelengths. A better understandingof the photophysical properties of laser dyes can significantly enhance the development and technology of dye lasers. We studied the nonlinear absorption properties of two rhodamine dyes to have some insight into their nonlinear optical properties.

Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy has been proposed as new method for determining the degree of humification of organic matter (OM) in whole soils. It can be also used to analyze the OM in whole soils containing large amounts of paramagnetic materials, and which are neither feasible to Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) nor to C-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In the present study, 3 LIF spectroscopy was used to investigate the OM in a Brazilian Oxisol containing high concentration of Fe+3. Soil samples were collected from two areas under conventional tillage (CT), two areas under no-till management (NT) and from a non-cultivated (NC) area under natural vegetation. The results of LIF spectroscopic analysis of the top layer (0-5 cm) of whole soils showed a less aromatic OM in the non-cultivated than in the cultivated soils. This is consistent with data corresponding to HA samples extracted from the same soils and analyzed by EPR, NMR and conventional fluorescence spectroscopy. The OM of whole soils at 5-10 and 10-20 cm depth was also characterized by LIF spectroscopy.Analysis of samples of NT and NC soils showed a higher OM aromatic content at depth. This is a consequence of the accumulation of plant residues at the soil surface in quantities that are too large for microorganisms to metabolize fully, thus, resulting in less aromatic or less hurnified humic substances. In deeper soil layers, the input of residues was lower and further decomposition of humic substances by microorganisms continued, and the aromaticity and degree of humification increased with soil depth. This data indicates that the gradient of humification of OM in the NT soil was similar to those observed in natural soils. Nevertheless, the degree of humification of the OM in the soils under no-till management varied less than that corresponding to non-cultivated soils. This may be because the former have been managed under these practices for only 5 years, in contrast to the continuous humification process occurring in the natural soils. on the other band, LIF spectroscopic analysis of the CT soils showed less pronounced changes or no change in the degree of humification with depth. This indicates that the ploughing and harrowing involved in CT lead to homogenization of the soil and thereby also of the degree of humification of OM throughout the profile. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. This paper reports the synthesis of Au nanoparticles by 30-fs pulses irradiation of a sample containing HAuCl4 and chitosan, a biopolymer used as reducing agent and stabilizer. We observed that it is a multi-photon induced process, with a threshold irradiance of 3.8 x 10(11) W/cm(2) at 790 nm. By transmission electron microscopy we observed nanoparticles from 8 to 50 nm with distinct shapes. Infrared spectroscopy indicated that the reduction of gold and consequent production of nanoparticles is related to the fs-pulse induced oxidation of hydroxyl to carbonyl groups in chitosan. This paper reported a three-dimensional microfluidic channel structure, which was fabricated by Yb:YAG 1026?nm femtosecond laser irradiation on a single-crystalline diamond substrate. The femtosecond laser irradiation energy level was optimized at 100?kHz repetition rate with a sub-500 femtosecond pulse duration. The morphology and topography of the microfluidic channel were characterized by a scanning electron microscope and an atomic force microscope. Raman spectroscopy indicated that the irradiated area was covered by graphitic materials. By comparing the cross-sectional profiles before/after removing the graphitic materials, it could be deduced that the microfluidic channel has an average depth of ~410?nm with periodical ripples perpendicular to the irradiation direction. This work proves the feasibility of using ultra-fast laser inscription technology to fabricate microfluidic channels on biocompatible diamond substrates, which offers a great potential for biomedical sensing applications.

To correlate the Raman frequencies of the amide I and III bands to beta-turn structures, three peptides shown to contain beta-turn structure by x-ray diffraction and NMR were examined. The compounds examined were tertiary (formula: see text). The amide I band of these compounds is seen at 1,668, 1,665, and 1,677 cm-1, and the amide III band appears at 1,267, 1,265, and 1,286 cm-1, respectively. Thus, it is concluded that the amide I band for type III beta-turn structure appears in the range between 1,665 and 1,677 cm-1 and the amide III band between 1,265 and 1,286 cm-1.

Direct writing of patterns is being widely attempted in the field of microelectronic circuit/device manufacture. Use of this technique eliminates the need for employing photolithographic process. Laser induced direct writing can be achieved by (i) Photochemical reaction [i] , (ii) Evaporation from target material [2], and (iii) decomposition.Micron size features of palladium and copper through decomposition of palladium acetate and copper formate respectively on quartz and silicon using Argon ion laser have been reported [3,4] .In this commuication we report a technique for both single line and large area depositon of copper through decomposition of copper acetate,(CH3COO)2Cu, on alumina substrates.Nd:YAG laser known for its reliability and low maintenance cost as compared to excimer and other gas lasers is used. This technique offers an attractive and economical alternative for manufacture of thin film microcircuits.

In a recent experiment on laser beam transmission through an absorbing gas, the critical Reynold's number for the flow, induced by the heating of the gas, to become turbulent was found to be less than 30, which is many orders of magnitude smaller than that for pure shear flow in pipes. It is shown here that a Rayleigh number is the more appropriate criterion to characterize the stability of flow in this situation, and its value estimated in two limiting cases is found to bracket the expected critical Rayleigh number for vertical concentric cylinders.
