A temperature atlas of the Gulf of Panama, 1955-1959

The interests of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission in the hydrography and biology of the Gulf of Panama have been adequately stated in the Commission's Bulletin series (Forsbergh, 1963; Howard, 1954; Howard and Landa, 1958; Peterson, 1961; Schaefer, 1953; Schaefer and Bishop, 1958; Schaefer, Bishop and Howard, 1958). The present report deals with data collected on 10 surveys made by Tuna Commission personnel for the purpose of describing seasonal upwelling by means of a study of the temperature structure of the Gulf of Panama, and a comparison of the thermal pattern during the dry, upwelling season (January to April) with that of the rainy season (May to December). Considerations of upwelling in the Gulf have been shown to be of interest and of probable biological consequence by Schaefer (1951) and by Simpson (1959). (PDF contains 60 pages.)

Report of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission for the year 1955

ENGLISH: This is the fifth year of investigations, by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission, of the fisheries for tunas and tuna-bait fishes in the Eastern Pacific Ocean adjacent to the shores of the Americas. These investigations are being conducted by an international scientific staff, under the provisions of a Convention to which Costa Rica, Panama, and the United States are signatories. Other nations having an interest in these fisheries may adhere through exchange of correspondence with the present member governments. SPANISH: Este es el quinto año de investigaciones efectuadas por la Comisión Interamericana del Atún Tropical sobre las pesquerías de atún y de peces de carnada usados para la captura de éste, en la zona del Pacífico Oriental adyacente a las costas de las Américas. Estas investigaciones están a cargo de un grupo internacional de científicos, de acuerdo 'con la Convención de la que son signatarias Costa Rica, Panamá y los Estados Unidos. The diatoms of Longans lake-vegetation. Fossil diatom flora. [Translation from: Acta Phytogeographica Suecica 36 73-86, 1955. ]

Sediment samples were taken from Lake Langans in Sweden and fossilised diatoms analysed. Sample methods and environmental factors are discussed. Species with a characteristic occurrence are described. The article discusses diatom-thanatocoenoses as indicators of environment.

Some abundant Tendipedid species (Diptera, Tendipedidae) of the Amu-Darya drainage basin. Acalcarella shilova, gen.n. only [Translation from: Ent.Obozr. 34 313-322, 1955]

This document is a partial translation of taxonomic notes on two Diptera species (Acalcarella Shilova, Acalcarrella nucus) which were abundant in a survey of Tendipedid species (Diptera, Tendipedidae) of the Amu Darya drainage basin. These taxonomic notes of the larva, pupa and adults include drawings of the Acalcarella nucus larva.

Some observations on the behaviour of plankton in waters discharged by the lakes [Translation from: Ost.bot.Zeit 103(1), 98-109, 1955]

This information is based on the limnological observations of the very interesting and remarkable discharge of the Lunzer Obersee, (1117m). On journeying towards the Mittersee, the Lunzer Obersee discharge takes on all the characteristics of spring-water; it was found to be of interest to take note of the change of the composition of the water on those stretches of the course where it flows shows the ground. For this purpose it was necessary to take temperature-recordings, chemical examination of the water and a quantitative determination of the plankton. Samples were taken in 1954 of zooplankton at different times of the year at the discharge of the lake and analysed. The significant loss of organisms in the way of discharge is discussed.

On certain discrete inequalities and their continous analogues

In a 1955 paper, Ky Fan, Olga Taussky, and John Todd presented discrete analogues of inequalities of Wirtinger type, and by taking limits they were able to recover the continuous inequalities. We generalize their techniques to mixed and higher derivatives and inequalities with weight functions in the integrals. We have also considered analogues of inequalities of Müller and Redheffer and have used these inequalities to derive a necessary and sufficient condition on ordered pairs of numbers so that the first number is the square norm of the k^th derivative of some periodic function and the second number is the square norm of the m^th derivative of the same periodic function.

Laboratory research was done in order to study the feeding of larval Cricotopus silvestris F. in relation to characters of structure of oral apparatus. Results of the experiments are summarised and the oral apparatus morhologically described.

Observations are reported on the content of organic matter in the Moscow region in 1941. Some data is given on alkalinity, oxygen content and colourisation of the rivers.

Dissolved organic matter, especially turf and peat, is repsonsible for the colouration of water. The reported study tried to determine the nature of the colouring agent or organic matter by the establishment of a relationship between the intensity of colouration and the total organic matter content. 44 waters from different sources were examined.

The processes of synthesis and destruction of organic matter play an important role in the ”self-cleaning” of reservoirs. The basic problem of this investigation consists of the role of phytoplankton in enriched waters of the Klyaz'minsk water reservoir through the solution of oxygen and its part in the ”self-cleaning” of the water reservoir. Observations on the interesting process of photosynthesis and the breakdown of organic matter was conducted by us on the eastern stretch of water in the Klyaz'minsk Reservoir during the growing periods of 1945 to 1948, by the widely applied bottle method (Vinberg 1934). This study reports mainly on the he vertical distribution of photosynthesis and respiration in plankton of the reservoir.

Dragões de papel: o jornalismo impresso ante os caminhos para o golpe civil-militar (1955/1964)

Esta pesquisa avalia a imprensa brasileira da década anterior ao golpe civil-militar (1955/64) que encerrou a experiência democrática. O objetivo é verificar como o jornalismo de vertente liberal reagiu às transformações políticas e sociais do período, buscando identificar a possível influência deste setor sobre a opinião pública. Tratando especificamente do jornalismo impresso, a análise buscará entender como as empresas jornalísticas atuaram politicamente em favor de interesses econômicos e ideológicos.

Dia de rebelião: as margens do Estado no cotidiano civil-prisional da Ilha Anchieta (1942-1955)

A Ilha Anchieta está localizada no litoral norte do Estado de São Paulo, no município de Ubatuba. Um importante sítio que apresenta em seu passado a presença de uma prisão, que perpassou múltiplas formas de encarceramento entre 1908-1955. O escopo da presente dissertação restringe-se ao período entre 1942-1955, quando era denominada Instituto Correcional da Ilha Anchieta (ICIA), tendo como momento de inflexão e reflexão uma grande rebelião prisional ocorrida em 20 de junho de 1952. A partir das pesquisas etnográfica, documental e bibliográfica realizadas, procurei entender, principalmente, como eram organizadas as redes de sociabilidade entre militares, funcionários civis, mulheres, crianças e os indivíduos privados da liberdade, que lá se encontravam encarcerados e ilhados. Durante o percurso historiográfico e micro sociológico, as relações foram sendo reveladas no plano das práticas cotidianas em escalas e perspectivas distintas, mas congruentes, que passaram a ser descritas, revelando uma intrincada malha de sociabilidade que misturava interesses e agentes variados, uma minuciosa trama de conflitos e dinâmicas sociais. O que está em voga são as fronteiras que operam nos momentos de interação social, subdivididas em cotidiano e rebelião, de como as dinâmicas sociais de um sujeito denominado Ilha Anchieta operam com a população residente e observar, principalmente, a dicotomia entre margens e Estado. A pesquisa permitiu ver como os indivíduos e as categorias operavam tanto no cotidiano, quanto no momento de evento crítico, de rebelião, levando-me a afirmar que, em momentos de ruptura, há um deslaçamento das dinâmicas previamente construídas para, no momento da ruptura, os indivíduos retornarem discursiva e praticamente às suas esferas categóricas de pertencimento, levando-me a crer que é no cotidiano e nas dinâmicas do dia a dia que as formas de nomeação e conceitualização, usualmente marginalizadas, entrelaçam-se tanto para dentro, como para fora do Estado. Desse choque surgem possibilidades de análise dos conflitos, contextos políticos e seus desdobramentos na história do sistema prisional paulista.

Ictiólogos de la Argentina: Olga Beatriz Oliveros

This series will include all those people who, by means of their contributions, great and small, played a part in the consolidation of ichthyology in Argentina. The general plan of this work consists of individual factsheets containing a list of works by each author, along with reference bibliography and, whenever possible, personal pictures and additional material. The datasheets will be published primarily in chronological order, although this is subject to change by the availability of materials for successive editions. This work represents another approach for the recovery and revalorization of those who set the foundations of Argentine ichthyology while in diverse historical circumstances. I expect this to be the beginning of a major work that achieves the description of such a significant part of the history of natural sciences in Argentina.
