In order to identify the dominant mechanism of ionic conduction, the electrical conductivity and ionic mobility of the glasses (AgX)0.4(Ag2O)0.3(GeO2)0.3 (X = I, Br, Cl) were measured separately in the temperature range from 293 to 393 K by coupling the AC technique with the TIC method. Electronic conductivity was also measured at 293 K by the Wagner polarization method. The total electrical conductivity of these glasses was found to be as high as 10-1 Ω-1 m-1, and the mobility about 10-6 m2 V-1 s-1. The variation of total electrical conductivity and mobility at constant temperature and composition with the type of halide occurred in the sequence, Cl < Br < I. For each composition, both conductivity and mobility increased with temperature. The mobile ion concentration was found to be about 1023 m-3 at 293 K, and it was insensitive to the type of halide as well as temperature. The results suggest that the change in ionic conductivity with the temperature and the type of halide present is mainly attributable to the change in ionic mobility rather than carrier concentration. Moreover, the electronic conductivity was found to be about 10-6 Ω-1 m-1 at 293 K. Thus, the electronic contribution to the total conductivity is negligibly small.

A series of novel organic-inorganic hybrid membranes have been prepared employing Nafion and acid-functionalized meso-structured molecular sieves (MMS) with varying structures and surface area. Acid-functionalized silica nanopowder of surface area 60 m(2)/g, silica meso-structured cellular foam (MSU-F) of surface area 470 m(2)/g and silica meso-structured hexagonal frame network (MCM-41) of surface area 900 m(2)/g have been employed as potential filler materials to form hybrid membranes with Nafion framework. The structural behavior, water uptake, proton conductivity and methanol permeability of these hybrid membranes have been investigated. DMFCs employing Nafion-silica MSU-F and Nafion-silica MCM-41 hybrid membranes deliver peak-power densities of 127 mW/cm(2) and 100 mW/cm(2), respectively; while a peak-power density of only 48 mW/cm(2) is obtained with the DMFC employing pristine recast Nafion membrane under identical operating conditions. The aforesaid characteristics of the hybrid membranes could be exclusively attributed to the presence of pendant sulfonic acid groups in the filler, which provide fairly continuous proton-conducting pathways between filler and matrix in the hybrid membranes facilitating proton transport without any trade-off between its proton conductivity and methanol crossover. Organic-inorganic hybrid membranes are prepared from Nafion and acid functionalized aluminosilicate with varying structures and surface areas. Acid-functionalized mesostructured aluminosilicate with cellular foam framework (Al-MSU-F type) of surface area 463 m(2) g(-1), acid-functionalized aluminosilicate molecular sieves (Al-HMS type) of surface area 651 m(2) g(-1) and acid-functionalized mesostructured aluminosilicate with hexagonal network (Al-MCM-41 type) of surface area 799 m(2) g(-1) have been employed as potential filler materials to form hybrid membranes with Nafion. The structural behavior, water uptake, ion-exchange capacity, proton conductivity and methanol permeability of the hybrid membranes are extensively investigated. Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) with Al-HMS-Nafion and Al-MCM-41-Nafion hybrid membranes deliver respective peak power-densities of 170 mW cm(-2) and 246 mW cm(-2), while a peak power-density of only 48 mW cm(-2) is obtained for the DMFC employing pristine recast-Nafion membrane under identical operating conditions. The unique properties associated with hybrid membranes could be exclusively attributed to the presence of pendant sulfonic-acid groups in the filler materials, which provide proton-conducting pathways between the filler and matrix in the hybrid membranes, and facilitate proton transport with adequate balance between proton conductivity and methanol permeability. Ionic Polymer Metal Composites (IPMCs) are a class of Electro-Active Polymers (EAPs) consisting of a base polymer (usually Nafion), sandwiched between thin films of electrodes and an electrolyte. Apart from fuel cell like proton exchange process in Nafion, these IPMCs can act both as an actuator and a sensor. Typically, IPMCs have been known for their applications in fuel cell technology and in artificial muscles for robots. However, more recently, sensing properties of IPMC have opened up possibilities of mechanical energy harvesting. In this paper, we consider a bi-layer stack of IPMC membranes where fluid flow induced cyclic oscillation allows collection of electronic charge across a pair of functionalized electrode on the surface of IPMC layers/stacks. IPMCs work well in hydrated environment; more specifically, in presence of an electrolyte, and therefore, have great potential in underwater applications like hydrodynamic energy harvesting. Hydrodynamic forces produce bending deformation, which can induce transport of cations via polymer chains of the base polymer of Nafion or PTFE. In our experimental set-up, the deformation is induced into the array of IPMC membranes immersed in electrolyte by water waves caused by a plunger connected to a stepper motor. The frequency and amplitude of the water waves is controlled by the stepper motor through a micro-controller. The generated electric power is measured across a resistive load. Few orders of magnitude increase in the harvested power density is observed. Analytical modeling approach used for power and efficiency calculations are discussed. The observed electro-mechanical performance promises a host of underwater energy harvesting applications.

The quality of a thermoelectric material is judged by the size of its temperature de- pendent thermoeletric-figure-of-merit (zT ). Superionic materials, particularly Zn4Sb3 and Cu2Se, are of current interest for the high zT and low thermal conductivity of their disordered, superionic phase. In this work it is reported that the super-ionic materials Ag2Se, Cu2Se and Cu1.97Ag0.03Se show enhanced zT in their ordered, normal ion-conducting phases. The zT of Ag2Se is increased by 30% in its ordered phase as compared to its disordered phase, as measured just below and above its first order phase transition. The zT ’s of Cu2Se and Cu1.97Ag0.03Se both increase by more than 100% over a 30 K temperatures range just below their super-ionic phase transitions. The peak zT of Cu2Se is 0.7 at 406 K and of Cu1.97Ag0.03Se is 1.0 at 400 K. In all three materials these enhancements are due to anomalous increases in their Seebeck coefficients, beyond that predicted by carrier concentration measurements and band structure modeling. As the Seebeck coefficient is the entropy transported per carrier, this suggests that there is an additional quantity of entropy co-transported with charge carriers. Such co-transport has been previously observed via co-transport of vibrational entropy in bipolaron conductors and spin-state entropy in NaxCo2O4. The correlation of the temperature profile of the increases in each material with the nature of their phase transitions indicates that the entropy is associated with the thermodynamcis of ion-ordering. This suggests a new mechanism by which high thermoelectric performance may be understood and engineered.
RESEARCH ON ELECTRICAL-PROPERTIES OF AMPHIPHILIC LIPID-MEMBRANES BY MEANS OF INTERDIGITAL ELECTRODES
Resumo:
Lipids are the main component of all cell membranes and also important mimetic materials. Moreover, it was found recently that they can be used as sensitive membranes for olfactory and taste sensors. Hence the understanding of lipid resistance is important both in sensors and in life sciences. Thirteen lipids were examined by means of interdigital electrodes with narrow gaps of 20-50 mu m, made by IC technology. The membrane lateral resistance in air, resisting electrical voltage, the influence of impurities on resistance and the resistance change in acetic acid vapour are presented for the first time. It is shown that the electrical resistivity for self-assembling lipids depends on their duration of being in an electric field and the content of the conductive impurities. The interdigital electrode is a transducer as well as a powerful tool for researching biomaterials and mimicking materials. The conducting mechanism of lipids is discussed. This method is also suitable for some polymer membranes.

Novel sulfonated poly [bis(benzimidazobenzisoquinolinones)] as hydrolytically and thermooxidatively stable electrolyte for high -temperature fuel cell applications are reported. A series of sulfonated polymers (SPBIBI-x, x refers to molar percentage of sulfonated dianhydride monomer) were synthesized from 6,6'-disulfonic-4,4'-binaphthyl-1,1',8,8'-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (SBTDA), 4,4-binaphthyl-1,1,8,8-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), and 3,3'-diaminobenzidine. The chemical structures of those polymers as well as model compounds synthesized from SBTDA and o-phenylenediamine were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR).

A facile phospholipid/room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) composite material based on dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim]PF6) was exploited as a new matrix for immobilizing protein. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were adopted to characterize this composite film. Hemoglobin (Hb) was chosen as a model protein to investigate the composite system. UV-vis absorbance spectra showed that Hb still maintained its heme crevice integrity in this composite film.

A new bisphenol monomer, 2,2'-dimethylaminemetllylene-4,4'-biphenol (DABP), was easily prepared by Mannich reaction of dimethylamine and formaldehyde with 4,4'-biphenol. Novel partially fluorinated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s with pendant quaternary ammonium groups were prepared by copolymerization of DABP, 4,4'-biphenol, and 3,3',4,4'- tetrafluorodiphenylsulfone, followed by reaction with iodomethane. The resulting copolymers PSQNI-x (where x represents the molar fraction of DABP in the feed) with high molecular weight exhibited outstanding solubility in polar aprotic solvents; thus, the flexible and tough membranes of PSQNI-x with varying ionic content could be prepared by casting from the DMAc solution. Novel anion exchange membranes, PSQNOH-x, were obtained by an anion exchange of PSQNI-x with 1 N NaOH.

A new cyclic guanidinium ionic liquid OGI (1,3-dimethyl-2-N ''-methyl-N ''-octylimidazoguanidinium iodide) has been used as a quasi-solid-state electrolyte for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), and 6.38% conversion efficiency was achieved at AM 1.5 simulated sunlight (9.81 mW cm(-2)). Further gelation with SiO2 nanoparticles afforded the solid-state electrolyte, which presented overall conversion efficiency of 5.85%. The diffusion properties of these OGI-based electrolytes were investigated. In the meantime, the optimal structure and ion-pairing interaction in OGI have been proposed by density functional theoretical calculation (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-21G(d,p) level.

The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of tris(2,29-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) [Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)] ion-exchanged in the sulfonic-functionalized MCM-41 silicas was developed with tripropylamine (TPrA) as a co-reactant in a carbon paste electrode (CPE) using a room temperature ionic liquid (IL) as a binder. The sulfonic-functionalized silicas MCM-41 were used for preparing an ECL sensor by the electrostatic interactions between Ru( bpy)(3)(2+) cations and sulfonic acid groups. We used the IL as a binder to construct the CPE (IL-CPE) to replace the traditional binder of the CPE (T-CPE)-silicone oil. The results indicated that the MCM-41-modified IL-CPE had more open structures to allow faster diffusion of Ru( bpy)(3)(2+) and that the ionic liquid also acted as a conducting bridge to connect TPrA with Ru( bpy)(3)(2+) sites immobilized in the electrode, resulting in a higher ECL intensity compared with the MCM-41-modified T-CPE. Herein, the detection limit for TPrA of the MCM-41-modified IL-CPE was 7.2 nM, which was two orders of magnitude lower than that observed at the T-CPE. When this new sensor was used in flow injection analysis (FIA), the MCM-41-modified IL-CPE ECL sensor also showed good reproducibility. Furthermore, the sensor could also be renewed easily by mechanical polishing whenever needed.

Surface-modified Nafion (R) membrane was prepared by casting proton-conducting polyelectrolyte complexes on the surface of Nafion (R). The casting layer is homogeneous and its thickness is about 900 nm. The proton conductivity of modified Nafion (R) is slightly lower than that of plain Nafion (R); however, its methanol permeability is 41% lower than that of plain Nafion (R). The single cells with modified Nafion (R) exhibit higher open circuit voltage (OCV = 0.73 V) and maximal power density (P-max = 58 mW cm(-2)) than the single cells with plain Nafion (R) (OCV = 0.67 V, P x = 49 mW cm-2). It is a simple, efficient, cost-effective approach to modifying Nafion (R) by casting proton-conducting materials on the surface of Nafion (R).

Conducting polyamline with electrical conductivity of 2.34 x 10(-1) S cm(-1) was obtained using ferrocenesulfonic acid as dopant. After the ferrocenesulfonic acid was oxidized with FeCl3, though the electrical conductivity of the doped polyaniline decreased by 1-2 orders of magnitude, the magnetic susceptibility (chi) increased with the increase of the oxidation degree of ferrocenesulfonic acid. EPR spectra showed not only a signal with a g value of around 2, but also a so-called half-field signal with a g value of about 4 even at room temperature. Coexistence of ferromagnetic intrachain interactions and antiferromagnetic interchain interactions in the materials has been suggested.

In an attempt to raise the transport number of Li+ to nearly unity in solid polymer electrolytes, commercial perfluorinated sulfonate acid membrane Nafion 117 was lithiated and codissolved with copolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride)hexafluoropropylene. The effect of fumed silica on the physical and electrochemical properties of the single ion conduction polymer electrolyte was studied with atom force microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It was confirmed that the fumed silica has an obvious effect on the morphology of polymer electrolyte membranes and ionic conductivity. The resulting materials exhibit good film formation, solvent-maintaining capability, and dimensional stability. The lithium polymer electrolyte after gelling with a plasticizer shows a high ionic conductivity of 3.18 x 10(-4) S/cm.
