In the title compound, C17H15Cl2NO, the dimethylaminophenyl group is close to coplanar with the central propenone group [dihedral angle =13.1 (1)degrees between the mean planes], while the dichlorophenyl group is twisted from the plane [dihedral angle = 64.0 (1)degrees].In the crystal, C-H center dot center dot center dot O and weak C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions are formed between molecules.

High resolution genetic and physical mapping of the I-3 region of tomato chromosome 7 reveals almost continuous microsynteny with grape chromosome 12 but interspersed microsynteny with duplications on Arabidopsis chromosomes 1, 2 and 3

The tomato I-3 gene introgressed from the Lycopersicon pennellii accession LA716 confers resistance to race 3 of the fusarium wilt pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici. We have improved the high-resolution map of the I-3 region of tomato chromosome 7 with the development and mapping of 31 new PCR-based markers. Recombinants recovered from L. esculentum cv. M82 × IL7-2 F2 and (IL7-2 × IL7-4) × M82 TC1F2 mapping populations, together with recombinants recovered from a previous M82 × IL7-3 F2 mapping population, were used to position these markers. A significantly higher recombination frequency was observed in the (IL7-2 × IL7-4) × M82 TC1F2 mapping population based on a reconstituted L. pennellii chromosome 7 compared to the other two mapping populations based on smaller segments of L. pennellii chromosome 7. A BAC contig consisting of L. esculentum cv. Heinz 1706 BACs covering the I-3 region has also been established. The new high-resolution map places the I-3 gene within a 0.38 cM interval between the molecular markers RGA332 and bP23/gPT with an estimated physical size of 50-60 kb. The I-3 region was found to display almost continuous microsynteny with grape chromosome 12 but interspersed microsynteny with Arabidopsis thaliana chromosomes 1, 2 and 3. An S-receptor-like kinase gene family present in the I-3 region of tomato chromosome 7 was found to be present in the microsyntenous region of grape chromosome 12 but was absent altogether from the A. thaliana genome.

Koulun profiloitumisen haavoittuvuus : Tapaustutkimus opettajien vaihtuvuuden vaikutuksista Montessori-menetelmää soveltavassa yhdysluokassa 1-2

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää koulujen profiloitumisen ja opettajien vaihtuvuuden välistä yhteyttä. Nykyisen koulutuspolitiikan mukaisesti koulujärjestelmämme päätäntävalta on siirtynyt yhä enemmän koulujen tasolle ja mahdollistaa siten kouluille oikeuden päättää melko itsenäisesti tarjoamansa opetuksen sisällöistä, tavoitteista ja menettelytavoista. Kouluilla on myös oikeus laatia omat opetussuunnitelmansa ja näin profiloitua haluamalleen painotusalueelle. Työvoiman liikkuvuuden myötä myös opettajat vaihtavat työpaikkaansa. Käytännössä tämä tarkoittaa opettajien siirtymistä kouluista ja tehtävistä toisiin eripituisten työskentelyjaksojen jälkeen. Tällaisesta vaihtuvuudesta ja sen vaikutuksista koulun työskentelyilmapiiriin sekä kaikkiin koulumaailman osapuoliin voidaan kuitenkin olla montaa eri mieltä. Erityisesti vaikutukset johonkin pienempään opetusyksikköön voivat olla melkoiset. Tutkimus toteutettiin eräässä helsinkiläisen ala-asteen koulussa, keskittyen opettajien vaihtuvuuden tarkasteluun Montessori-pedagogiikalla opetettavassa yhdysluokassa. Tutkimukseen sisällytettiin Montessori-luokan oppilaat, heidän vanhempansa sekä koulun opettajat. Tutkimus suoritettiin kirjallisuuteen perehtyen, luokkaa observoiden, oppilaita ja opettajia haastatellen sekä vanhemmilla kirjoitelmia teettäen. Aineiston suppeuden ja tutkimuksen case study -luonteen vuoksi vaihtuvuuden moninaisia vaikutuksia ilmentäviä tutkimustuloksia ei kuitenkaan voida yleistää. 3-Amino-1,2,4-triazole is an inhibitor of protein synthesis on mitoribosomes in Neurospora crassa

The effects of the herbicide, 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole, an inhibitor of heme synthesis in rat liver, have been examined in the mold Neurospora crassa. The drug is a potent inhibitor of the growth of the mold and produces biochemical changes identical to those produced by chloramphenicol. 3-Amino-1,2,4-triazole, like chloramphenicol, is a direct and specific inhibitor of protein synthesis on mitoribosomes. A decrease in the levels of mitochondrial proteins which are completely or partly made on mitoribosomes and an accumulation in the levels of mitochondrial proteins of cytosolic origin have been observed. Both drugs depress porphyrin and heme levels, but there is actually an elevation in the levels of δ-aminolevulinate dehydratase, the rate-limiting enzyme of the heme-biosynthetic pathway in Neurospora crassa. In liver the enzyme is present in non-limiting amounts and the levels are depressed under conditions of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole treatment. In Neurospora crassa the ‘derepression’ of δ-aminolevulinate dehydratase under conditions of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole or chloramphenicol treatment is only partial because the drugs inhibit protein synthesis on mitoribosomes. It is concluded that an optimal rate of protein synthesis on mitoribosomes is necessary to maintain an adequate rate of heme synthesis.

Methyl 2-methyl-2H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylate

In the title compound, C5H7N3O2, all non-H atoms lie in a common plane, with a maximum deviation of 0.061 (2)° for the ester methyl C atom. The structure is stabilized by intermolecular C-H O hydrogen bonds.

Amide-catalysed isomerisation of 5,6-dihydroisoquinolines: a novel synthesis of 1,2-dihydroisoquinolines

Knoevenagel condensation of 2-acylcyclohexanones or 2-ethoxycarbonylcyclohexanone with either cyanoacetamide or malononitrile followed by silver salt alkylation gave the 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroisoquinolines (3a–i). Chromic acid oxidation of the 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroisoquinolines (3a–i) to the corresponding tetralones (4a–i) followed by sodium borohydride reduction and p-toluenesulphonic acid-catalysed dehydration of the resulting alcohols (5a–i) gave the 5,6-dihydroisoquinolines (6a–i). Reaction of 5,6-dihydroisoquinolines (6a–g) with potassium amide in liquid ammonia gave a mixture of the 1,3-dihydroisoquinolines (7a–g) and the isoquinolines (8a–g). The C-1 unsubstituted 1,2-dihydroisoquinoline (7c) was found to be very unstable. In the case of the 5,6-dihydroisoquinolines (6h and 6i), reaction of potassium amide in liquid ammonia resulted in a mixture of 1-aminoisoquinoline (9) and the isoquinolines (8h and 8i). All the above compounds have been characterised by spectral data. A probable pathway for the formation of the 1,2-dihydroisoquinolines (7a–g) and the isoquinolines (8a–i) is suggested.

The structure of 3-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1,1,2,2-cyclopropanetetracarbonitrile

Crystals of C I4HsN40 are monoclinic, space group P21, Unit-cell constants are a = 13.241(4), b = 7.446 (2), c = 6.436 (2)/A, B= 93.23 (2) °. V= 633.5 /A3, Z = 2, Dob s = 1.30 (flotation), Dealt = 1.300 Mg m -3 and #(Cu Ka) = 0.72 mm -1. The structure, solved by direct methods, has been refined to an R value of 3.5% using 1245 intensity measurements. The combined effect of electron-withdrawing and –donating substituents on the geometry of the cyclopropane ring is discussed.

Studies in metal-ammonia reduction. Part 4. Reduction and reductive methylation of 7-methoxy-3,4-dihydrophenanthren-1(2H)-one and 7-methoxy-1,2-dihydrophenanthren-4(3H)-one

Birch reduction and reductive methylations of the title compounds have been investigated. 7-Methoxy-3,4-dihydrophenanthren-1(2H)-one (2) yields the cis-3,4,9,10,11,12-hexahydro-derivative (15) while the 7-methoxy-1,2-dihydrophenanthren-4(3H)-one (5) is reduced to the corresponding 1,2,9,10-tetrahydro-derivative (7). The factors influencing the mechanism of the reduction process have been discussed. The reductive methylation products of the ketone (2) are useful substrates in the synthesis of 9-methyl steroids.
