Vatne [13] and Green and Marcos [9] have independently studied the Koszul-like homological properties of graded algebras that have defining relations in degree 2 and exactly one other degree. We contrast these two approaches, answer two questions posed by Green and Marcos, and find conditions that imply the corresponding Yoneda algebras are generated in the lowest possible degrees.

This research examines the role of social context in ethical consumption, specifically, the extent to which anonymity and social control influence individuals' decisions to purchase organic and Fair Trade coffee. Our research design overcomes biases of prior research by combining framing and discrete choice experiments in a survey. We systematically vary coffee growing method (organic or not), import status (Fair Trade or not), flavor, and price across four social contexts that vary in degree of anonymity and normative social control. The social contexts are buying coffee online, in a large grocery store, in a small neighborhood shop, and for a meeting of a human rights group. Subjects comprise 1,103 German and American undergraduate students. We find that social context indeed influences subjects' ethical consumer decisions, especially in situations with low anonymity and high social control. In addition, gender, coffee buying, and subjective social norms trigger heterogeneity regarding stated ethical consumption and the effects of social context. These results suggest previous research has underestimated the relevance of social context for ethical consumption and overestimated altruistic motives of ethical consumers. Our study demonstrates the great potential of discrete choice experiments for the study of social action and decision making processes in sociology.

Intensification of North Pacific Intermediate Water during the Younger Dryas and stadials of the last glacial episode has been advocated by Kennett and his colleagues based on studies of ventilation history in Santa Barbara Basin. Because Santa Barbara Basin is a semi-isolated marginal basin, this hypothesis requires testing in sequences on the upper continental margin facing the open-ocean of the Pacific. Ocean Drilling Program Site 1017 is located on the upper slope of southern California off Point Conception close to the entrance of Santa Barbara Basin, an ideal location to test the hypothesis of late Quaternary switching in intermediate waters. We examined chemical and mineral composition, sedimentary structures, and grain size of hemipelagic sediments representing the last 80 k.y. at this site to detect changes in behavior of intermediate waters. We describe distinct compositional and textual variations that appear to reflect changes in grain size in response to flow velocity fluctuations of bottom waters. Qualitative estimates of changes in degree of pyritization indicate better ventilation of bottom water during intervals of stronger bottom-water flow. Comparison between variations in the sediment parameters and the planktonic d18O record indicates intensified bottom-current activity during the Younger Dryas and stadials of marine isotope Stage 3. This result strongly supports the hypothesis of Kennett and his colleagues. Our investigation also suggests strong grain-size control on organic carbon content (and to less extent carbonate carbon content). This, in turn, suggests the possibility that organic carbon content of sediments, which is commonly used as an indicator of surface productivity, can be influenced by bottom currents.

The 720 m of igneous basement that was penetrated at Site 786 of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 125 consists of boninite-series volcanics. Bronzite andesites dominate the lithology and primitive magmas of high-Ca, intermediate-Ca, and low-Ca boninite are present in subordinate amounts. Sparsely phyric boninites typically contain olivine and orthopyroxene phenocrysts with Mg numbers [= Mg/(Mg + Fe) in moles] between 86% and 87%. Their high whole-rock Mg numbers, and the absence of zonation in the phenocrysts, imply equilibration at temperatures probably between 1200° and 1250°C, and 20° to 50°C below their liquidus. Equilibrium olivine and orthopyroxene have identical Mg numbers, and Mg/Fe partitioning between these minerals and the melt thus can be described with a single Kd. The invariably phenocryst-rich bronzite andesites contain Plagioclase that has spectacular zoning and mafic phases that can be as magnesian as those of the boninite parent. The most evolved melts are rhyolites with hypersthene, Plagioclase (An50), and magnetite. Eruption temperatures for the rhyolites are estimated at about 1000°C. Some magmas contain ferroactinolite in the groundmass, which is most likely a secondary, low-temperature phase. The locally large contrasts in degree of alteration are consistent with multiple episodes of magmatic activity. However, all igneous events produced boninite volcanics. Only the first, the edifice-building episode, gave rise to differentiated magmas. Differentiation of parental boninites took place by limited fractional crystallization, producing bronzite andesites. The erupted andesites, dacites and rhyolites are filter pressed extracts from these bronzite andesite magmas, which, as a result, have accumulated crystals. Subsequent younger igneous events produced high-Ca and intermediate-Ca boninites which intruded as dikes and sills throughout the basement sequence. The mineralogy of the dikes and sills reflects variable degrees of subliquidus cooling of the magma before emplacement.

This database (Leemans & Cramer 1991) contains monthly averages of mean temperature, temperature range, precipitation, rain days and sunshine hours for the terrestrial surface of the globe, gridded at 0.5 degree longitude/latitude resolution. All grd-files contain the same 62483 pixels in the same order, with 30' latitude and longitude resolution. The coordinates are in degree-decimals and indicate the SW corner of each pixel. Topography is from ETOPO5 and indicates modal elevation. Data were generated from a large data base, using the partial thin-plate splining algorithm (Hutchinson & Bischof 1983). This version is widely used around the globe, notably by all groups participating in the IGBP NPP model intercomparison.

This study was aimed at reconstructing a sequence of events in the magmatic and metamorphic evolution of peridotites, gabbroids, and trondhjemites from internal oceanic complexes of the Ashadze and Logachev hydrothermal vent fields. Collections of plutonic rocks from Cruises 22 and 26 of R/V "Professor Logachev", Cruise 41 of R/V "Akademik Mstislav Keldysh", and from the Serpentine Russian-French expedition aboard R/V "Pourquoi pas?" were objects of this study. Data reported here suggest that the internal oceanic complexes of the Ashadze and Logachev fields formed via the same scenario in these two regions of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. On the other hand, an analysis of petrological and geochemical characteristics of the rocks indicated that the internal oceanic complexes of the MAR axial zone between 12°58'N and 14°45'N show pronounced petrological and geochemical heterogeneity manifested in variations in degree of depletion of mantle residues and in Nd isotopic compositions of rocks from the gabbro-peridotite association. Trondhjemites from the Ashadze hydrothermal field can be considered as partial melting products of gabbroids under influence of hydrothermal fluids. It was supposed that presence of trondhjemites in internal oceanic complexes of MAR can be used as a marker for the highest temperature deep-rooted hydrothermal systems. Perhaps, the region of the MAR axial zone, in which petrologically and geochemically contrasting internal oceanic complexes are spatially superimposed, serves as an area for development of large hydrothermal clusters with considerable ore-forming potential.

In this thesis, we have studied in depth the development of support models for distance collaborative learning and subsequently devised an architecture based on the Computer Supported Collaborative Learning paradigm principles. The proposed architecture addresses a specific problem: coordinating groups of students to perform collaborative distance learning activities. Our approach uses Cooperative Work, Artificial Intelligence and Human-Computer Interaction techniques as well as some ideas from the fields of Pedagogy and Psychology. We have designed a complete, open and generic solution. Our architecture exploits the new information technologies to achieve an effective system for education purposes. It is organised into four levels: Configuration, Experience, Organisation and Reflection. This model has been implemented into a system called DEGREE. In DEGREE, each level of the architecture gives rise to an independent subsystem related to the other ones. The application benefits from the use of shared structured workspaces. The configuration subsystem allows customising the elements that define an experience and a workspace. The experience subsystem gathers the users' contributions to build joint solutions to a given problem. The students' interventions build up a structure based on a generic conversation graph. Moreover, all user actions are registered in order to represent explicitly the complete process for reaching the group solution. Those data are also stored into a common memory, which constitutes the organisation subsystem. The user interventions are studied by the reflection subsystem. This analysis allows us inferring conclusions about the way in which the group works and its attitudes towards collaboration. The inference process takes into account the observer's subjective knowledge. The process of developing both the architecture and the system in parallel has run through a five-pass cycle involving successive stages of prototyping and formative evaluation. At each stage of that process, we have considered the users' feedback for improving the architecture's functionalities as well as the system interface. This approach has allowed us to prove the usability and validity of our proposal.

The kinetics of the polymerization of styrene iniated by 1-chloro-1-phenyltehane/tin (IV) chloride in the presence of tetrabutylammonium chloride have been studied. Dilatometry studies at 25 °C were conducted and the orders of reaction were established. Molecular weight studies were conducted for these experiments using size exclusion chromatography. These studies indicated that transfer/termination reactions were present. The observed kinetics may be explained by a polymerization mechanism involving a single propagating species which is present in low concentrations. Reactions at 0 °C and -15 °C have shown that a "living" polymerization could be obtained at low temperatures. A method was derived to study the kinetics of a "living" polymerization by following the increase in degree of polymerization with time. Polymerizations of styrene were conducted using 1,4-bis(bromomethyl)benzene as a difunctional co-catalyst. These reactions produced polymers with broad or bimodal molecular weight distributions. These observations may be explained by the rate of initiation being slower than the rate of propagation or the presence of transfer/termination reactions. Reactions were conducted using a co-catalyst using a co-catalyst produced by the addition of 1,1-diphenylethane to 1,4-bis(bromomethyl)benzene. Size exclusion chromatography studies showed that the polymers produced had a narrower molecular weight distribution than those produced by polymerizations initiated by 1,4-bis(bromomethyl)benzene alone. However the polydispersity was still observed to increase with reaction time. This may also be explained by slow initiation compared to the rate of propagation. Polymerizations initiated by both bifunctional initiators were examined using the method of studying reaction kinetics by following the change in number average degree of polymerization. The results indicated that a straight line relationship could also be obtained with a non-living polymerization.

Homophobic attitudes, irrational fears and negative attitudes against gay men and lesbians exist on the college campus (Lance, 2002; Rankin, 2003). Educators wishing to change these attitudes need to know what types of intervention would be effective. This investigation empirically assessed the degree of homophobia in a group of college students, and changes in the degree of homophobia following two levels of educational intervention that were rooted in educational theories and social contact theory. A 25-item scale developed by Hudson and Ricketts to measure the degree of negative attitudes toward gay men and lesbians was used in English classes at a southeastern university. This study examined the relationship between different demographic groups and the degree of change obtained as a result of the interventions. ^ Findings did not suggest that either interaction with gay men and lesbians in the form of a speaker panel or viewing a “coming out” episode of the Ellen show reduced homophobia to a significant extent. Results did demonstrate the Caribbeans and right wing authoritarians tend to be more homophobic. Post hoc analysis investigated factors that may have contaminated the interventions. Speaker Identification was a significant predictor of change in degree of homophobia. ^

In this dissertation we propose a Teaching Unit of Physics to teach content through environmental discussions of the greenhouse effect and global warming. This teaching unit is based on a problem-methodological intervention from the application of the method of the Arch of Charles Maguerez. The methodological foundations of the thesis are embedded in action research and this is structured in five chapters: the first chapter deals with the Physical Environment (FMA) as a subject in Degree Courses in Physics in Brazil, bringing the concern of how this discipline has been taught. We started the first chapter explaining the reasons behind the inclusion of the discipline of Physical Environment in a Physics Degree Courses. Then we did a search on the websites of Institutions of Higher Education, to know of the existence or not of this discipline on curricular. We then analyzed the menus to see what bibliographies are being adopted and what content of Physics are being worked, and how it has been done. The courses surveyed were those of Federal and Federal Institutes Universities. Thus ended the first chapter. Given the inseparability between studies in Physics Teaching and studies on competencies, skills and significant learning, wrote the second chapter. In this chapter we discuss the challenge of converting information into knowledge. Initially on initial teacher training, because even if this is not our focus, the study is a discipline on the upper reaches, therefore, offered to future teachers. Then we talked about the culture of knowledge, where we emphasize the use of a teaching approach that promotes meanings taught by content and make sense to the student. We finished the third chapter, making some considerations on skills and abilities, in order to identify what skills and competencies were developed and worked during and after the implementation of Curriculum Unit. The third chapter is the result of a literature review and study of the radioactive EarthSun interaction. The subjects researched approach from the generation of energy in the sun to topics stain solar coronal mass ejections, solar wind, black body radiation, Wien displacement law, Stefan-Boltzmann Law, greenhouse effect and global warming. This chapter deals with material support for the teacher of the aforementioned discipline. The fourth chapter talks about the arc method of Charles Maguerez; Here we explain the structure of each of the five steps of the Arc and how to use them in teaching. We also show another version of this method adapted by Bordenave. In the fifth and final chapter brought a description of how the method of Arc was used in physics classes of Environment, with students majoring in Physics IFRN Campus Santa Cruz. Here, in this chapter, a transcript of classes to show how was the application of a problem-based methodology in the teaching of content proposed for Physics Teaching Unit from the environmental discussion about the greenhouse effect and global warming phenomena
