This paper describes the design, tuning, and extensive field testing of an admittance-based Autonomous Loading Controller (ALC) for robotic excavation. Several iterations of the ALC were tuned and tested in fragmented rock piles—similar to those found in operating mines—by using both a robotic 1-tonne capacity Kubota R520S diesel-hydraulic surface loader and a 14-tonne capacity Atlas Copco ST14 underground load-haul-dump (LHD) machine. On the R520S loader, the ALC increased payload by 18 % with greater consistency, although with more energy expended and longer dig times when compared with digging at maximum actuator velocity. On the ST14 LHD, the ALC took 61 % less time to load 39 % more payload when compared to a single manual operator. The manual operator made 28 dig attempts by using three different digging strategies, and had one failed dig. The tuned ALC made 26 dig attempts at 10 and 11 MN target force levels. All 10 11 MN digs succeeded while 6 of the 16 10 MN digs failed. The results presented in this paper suggest that the admittance-based ALC is more productive and consistent than manual operators, but that care should be taken when detecting entry into the muck pile

This paper focuses on the consumer imagination and, more specifically, on the imaginary shopping spaces which women's magazines create. It addresses the anticipatory, imaginary and experiential consumption which this medium invites. The paper explores how women's magazines function as ‘dreamworlds’ of shopping; and how contemporary readers consume these imaginary shopping spaces. In order to illustrate what the authors term the ‘shopping imaginary’, they draw on findings from a study of women's experiential consumption of magazines, which show the multifaceted ways around which imaginary consumption is explored and enjoyed by women. The study suggests that women's magazines, like department stores, are spaces that facilitate and celebrate just looking and browsing, and, above all, they are shopping spaces that address the power of the imagination within them. Facing the exigencies of Emancipation, a South in ruins, and ongoing violence, between 1862 and 1872 the United States Congress debated the role education would play in the postbellum polity. Positing schooling as a panacea for the nation’s problems, a determiner of individual worth, and a way of ameliorating state and federal tensions, congressional leaders envisioned education as a way of reshaping American political life. In pursuit of this vision, many policymakers advocated national school agencies and assertive interventions into state educational systems. Interrogating the meaning of “education” for congressional leaders, this study examines the role of this ambiguous concept in negotiating the contradictions of federal and state identity, projecting visions of social change, evaluating civic preparedness, and enabling broader debates over the nation’s future. Examining legislative debates over the Reconstruction Acts, Freedmen’s Bureau, Bureau of Education, and two bills for national education reform in the early 1870s, this project examines how disparate educational visions of Republicans and Democrats collided and mutated amid the vicissitudes of public policy argument. Engaging rhetorical concepts of temporality, disposition, and political judgment, it examines the allure and limitations of education policy rhetoric, and how this rhetoric shifted amid the difficult process of coming to policy agreements in a tumultuous era. In a broader historical sense, this project considers the role of Reconstruction Era congressional rhetoric in shaping the long-term development of contemporary Americans’ “educational imaginary,” the tacit, often unarticulated assumptions about schooling that inflect how contemporary Americans engage in political life, civic judgment, and social reform. Treating the analysis of public policy debate as a way to gain insights into transitions in American political life, the study considers how Reconstruction Era debate converged upon certain common agreements, and obfuscated significant fault lines, that persist in contemporary arguments.

Nervous Kitchens intervenes in the story of soul food by treating the kitchen as a central site of instability. These kitchens reveal and critique their importance to constructions of Black womanhood. Utilizing close readings of Black women’s culinary practices in popular televisual kitchens and archival analysis of USDA domestic reforms, the project locates sites that challenge how we oversimplify soul food as a Black cultural product. These oversimplifications come through what I term the soul food imaginary. This term underscores how the cuisine is tangible (i.e., how dishes are made) but also the ways that histories of enslavement, migration, and domesticity are disseminated through fictionalized representations of Black women in the kitchen offering comfort through food. The project explores how images of these kitchens adhere to and diverge from the imaginary's four conventions: (1) Soul food originates in enslavement where master’s scraps became mama’s meal time; (2) Soul food is not healthy food; (3) Soul food moves South to North uninterrupted during the Great Migration and is evidence of and fuel for struggle, survival, and transformation; and 4) Black women cook it the best, naturally, and alone in the kitchen.

Electrical properties of polycrystalline gas sensors are analyzed by d.c. and a.c. measurements. d.c. electrical conductivity values compared with those obtained by admittance spectroscopy methods help to obtain a detailed 'on line' analysis of conductivity-modulated gas sensors. The electrical behaviour of grain boundaries is obtained and a new design of sensors can be achieved by enhancing the activity of surface states in the detecting operation. A Schottky barrier model is used to explain the grain boundary action under the presence of surrounding gases. The height of this barrier is a function of gas concentration due to the trapping of excess charge generated by gas adsorption at the interface. A comparison between this dependence, and a plot of the real and imaginary components of the admittance versus frequency at different gas concentrations, provides information on the different parameters that play a role in the conduction mechanisms. These methods have been applied to the design of a CO sensor based on tin oxide films for domestic purposes, the characteristics of which are presented.

Pesquisas e reflexões sobre ensino, história e epistemologia das Ciências da Terra têm sido desenvolvidas, em grande parte, intimamente associadas às práticas docentes dos professores/pesquisadores universitários. Nessa mesma perspectiva, buscamos neste trabalho compreender relações que os estudantes de licenciatura em Geografia estabelecem entre o conteúdo/forma trabalhado numa disciplina universitária e o conteúdo/forma profissional, ou seja, pensado na relação com a escola básica, com o tornar-se professor. As respostas dos estudantes a uma questão por nós formulada indicou como eles representaram uma das atividades desenvolvidas na disciplina na relação com seu imaginário sobre ser professor da educação básica. As análises mostraram também que essas significações se produzem de maneiras muito diferentes entre os estudantes, fazendo intervir no imaginário a partir do qual essas significações se produzem, aspectos da memória escolar de alguns estudantes e da maneira como representam o conhecimento escolar e as práticas de ensino na disciplina Geografia da educação básica. As análises mostraram que a atividade não é transparente quanto ao que seja o "conteúdo" de ensino da atividade, posto que essas significações são o trabalho de diferentes memórias discursivas, implicado em diferentes posições-aluno. Este estudo aponta para a importância de considerar e para a possibilidade de trabalhar com os imaginários dos futuros professores sobre ensino na relação que estabelecem com os conteúdos/formas em suas disciplinas científicas universitárias.

Acidentes e violências são responsáveis por elevadas taxas de mortalidade e morbidade causadas pelas lesões deles decorrentes. Entre essas lesões, os traumas da coluna vertebral e, especificamente, aqueles com comprometimento da medula espinal apresentam-se como relevantes. Os acidentes de transporte em geral e os de trânsito, em especial, constituem-se, também, hoje, em um grave problema de Saúde Pública. Dados epidemiológicos sobre tais acidentes são fundamentais para que sejam feitos programas de prevenção, com a atuação de profissionais da saúde e da educação, em relação ao cumprimento de leis e normas. No caso de traumas de coluna ocasionados por acidentes de transporte, percebe-se um número elevado e preocupante. Do total de internações por traumas de coluna, 22,7 por cento no ano de 2005, foram decorrentes de acidentes de transporte. Destes, cerca de 29 por cento eram pedestres, 23 por cento ocupantes, 20 por cento não-especificados e 19,9 por cento motociclistas, quando classificados de acordo com a qualidade da vítima. É importante ressaltar que os pacientes internados por essas causas têm mortalidade hospitalar elevada e o número estimado de seqüelas é considerável
