This work presents an alternative approach based on neural network method in order to estimate speed of induction motors, using the measurement of primary variables such as voltage and current. Induction motors are very common in many sectors of the industry and assume an important role in the national energy policy. The nowadays methodologies, which are used in diagnosis, condition monitoring and dimensioning of these motors, are based on measure of the speed variable. However, the direct measure of this variable compromises the system control and starting circuit of an electric machinery, reducing its robustness and increasing the implementation costs. Simulation results and experimental data are presented to validate the proposed approach. © 2003-2012 IEEE.

The objective of this work is to study the implantation feasibility of a small hydropower system in a rural area in Guaratinguetá. Due to its location and accessibility, and the costs involved in extending the public distribution line to the property it could turn become viable the construction of an individual electric generation system. As alternatives, a solar photovoltaic system and combustion engine-electric generator systems were considered. However, the existence of a small river inside the property, the construction of a micro hydropower plant was taken into account. The choice of the micro power hydropower plant was determined by the owner and was based on the costs. The topographic and hydrological profiles as well as the geometrical characteristics of the system, including the civil infrastructure needed and the more adequate turbine, were determined. Finally, the cost spreadsheet was set and the results were compared with those calculated for the extension of the available public distribution system

The research aimed to evaluate the relationship between the thermal environment of the rest pens in a pig slaughterhouse and the surface temperature (ST) of the animals as well as the effect of intermittent water spraying on thermal comfort. There were two visits to slaughter industrial being in each selected three pens of rest, one for control treatment (no spray throughout the period) and two for the treatment of intermittent spraying water (30 minutes intervals with constant spray followed by 30 minutes then turned off). Assessments began at the time of discharging animals in which are taken the thermographic images from lots using an infrared thermographic camera. After housing in the pens, were registered the thermographic images and the respiratory frequency (RF) every five minutes for four hours. Were evaluated the temperature, relative humidity and temperature-humidity index (THI). Considering the values of THI was observed that the animals remained in a condition of comfort only at the time of his arrival at the slaughterhouse. The ST and RF of the animals kept in the pens without sprinkler system (control) showed a linear increase in function of time of day, with increasing temperature. The treatment with intermittent sprinkling of water was observed oscillatory behavior of the ST and RF, however it was always lower than the control treatment, even in times when the water sprinklers were turned off. The time required of spray to reduction and stabilization of the ST of the animals was limited to the combination of temperature and relative humidity, being estimated at 25 minutes at times of higher THI. The maximum environmental temperature during evaluation was 28.4 oC.

The Lucia jig is a technique that promotes neuromuscular reprogramming of the masticatory system and allows the stabilization of the mandible without the interference of dental contacts, maintaining the mandible position in harmonic condition with the musculature in normal subjects or in patients with temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). This study aimed to electromyographically analyze the activity (RMS) of the masseter and temporal muscles in normal subjects (control group) during the use of an anterior programming device, the Lucia jig, in place for 0, 5, 10, 20 and 30 minutes to demonstrate its effect on the stomatognathic system. Forty-two healthy dentate individuals (aged 21 to 40 years) with normal occlusion and without parafunctional habits or ternporomandibular dysfunction (RDC/TMD) were evaluated on the basis of the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporal muscles before placement of a neuromuscular re-programming device, the Lucia jig, on the upper central incisors. There were no statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in the electromyographic activity of the masticatory muscles in the different time periods. The Lucia jig changed the electromyographic activity by promoting a neuromuscular reprogramming. In most of the time periods, it decreased the activation of the masticatory muscles, showing that this device has wide applicability in dentistry. The use of a Lucia jig over 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 minutes did not promote any statistically significant increase in muscle activity despite differences in the data, thus showing that this intra-oral device can be used in dentistry.

Background: The hypothalamus plays a pivotal role in numerous mechanisms highly relevant to the maintenance of body homeostasis, such as the control of food intake and energy expenditure. Impairment of these mechanisms has been associated with the metabolic disturbances involved in the pathogenesis of obesity. Since rodent species constitute important models for metabolism studies and the rat hypothalamus is poorly characterized by proteomic strategies, we performed experiments aimed at constructing a two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) profile of rat hypothalamus proteins. Results: As a first step, we established the best conditions for tissue collection and protein extraction, quantification and separation. The extraction buffer composition selected for proteome characterization of rat hypothalamus was urea 7 M, thiourea 2 M, CHAPS 4%, Triton X-100 0.5%, followed by a precipitation step with chloroform/methanol. Two-dimensional (2-D) gels of hypothalamic extracts from four-month-old rats were analyzed; the protein spots were digested and identified by using tandem mass spectrometry and database query using the protein search engine MASCOT. Eighty-six hypothalamic proteins were identified, the majority of which were classified as participating in metabolic processes, consistent with the finding of a large number of proteins with catalytic activity. Genes encoding proteins identified in this study have been related to obesity development. Conclusion: The present results indicate that the 2-DE technique will be useful for nutritional studies focusing on hypothalamic proteins. The data presented herein will serve as a reference database for studies testing the effects of dietary manipulations on hypothalamic proteome. We trust that these experiments will lead to important knowledge on protein targets of nutritional variables potentially able to affect the complex central nervous system control of energy homeostasis.

RATIONALE: High levels of calcium independent phospholipase A2 (iPLA2) are present in certain regions of the brain, including the cerebral cortex, striatum, and cerebellum (Ong et al. 2005). OBJECTIVES: The present study was carried out to elucidate a possible role of the enzyme in the motor system. METHODS: The selective iPLA2 inhibitor bromoenol lactone (BEL), the nonselective PLA2 inhibitor methyl arachidonyl fluorophosphonate (MAFP), and an antisense oligonucleotide were used to interfere with iPLA2 activity in various components of the motor system. Control animals received injections of carrier (phosphate buffered saline, PBS) at the same locations. The number of vacuous chewing movements (VCM) was counted from 1 to 14 days after injection. RESULTS: Rats that received BEL and high-dose MAFP injections in the striatum, thalamus, and motor cortex, but not the cerebellum, showed significant increase in VCM, compared to those injected with PBS at these locations. BEL-induced VCM were blocked by intramuscular injections of the anticholinergic drug, benztropine. Increased VCM was also observed after intrastriatal injection of antisense oligonucleotide to iPLA2. The latter caused a decrease in striatal iPLA2 levels, confirming a role of decreased enzyme activity in the appearance of VCM. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest an important role for iPLA2 in the cortex-striatum-thalamus-cortex circuitry. It is postulated that VCM induced by iPLA2 inhibition may be a model of human parkinsonian tremor.

Recent developments in the area of interactive entertainment have suggested to combine stereoscopic visualization with multi-touch displays, which has the potential to open up new vistas for natural interaction with interactive three-dimensional (3D) applications. However, the question arises how the user interfaces for system control in such 3D setups should be designed in order to provide an effective user experience. In this article we introduce 3D GUI widgets for interaction with stereoscopic touch displays. The design of the widgets was inspired to skeuomorphism and affordances in such a way that the user should be able to operate the virtual objects in the same way as their real-world equivalents. We evaluate the developed widgets and compared them with their 2D counterparts in the scope of an example application in order to analyze the usability of and user behavior with the widgets. The results reveal differences in user behavior with and without stereoscopic display during touch interaction, and show that the developed 2D as well as 3D GUI widgets can be used effectively in different applications.

Culture experiments with living planktic foraminifers reveal that the ratio of boron to calcium (B/Ca) in Orbulina universa increases from 56 to 92 µmol mol-1 when pH is raised from 7.61 +/- 0.02 to 8.67 +/- 0.03 (total scale). Across this pH range, the abundances of carbonate, bicarbonate, and borate ions also change (+ 530, - 500, and + 170 µmol kg-1, respectively). Thus specific carbonate system control(s) on B/Ca remain unclear, complicating interpretation of paleorecords. B/Ca in cultured O. universa also increases with salinity (55-72 µmol mol-1 from 29.9-35.4 per mil) and seawater boron concentration (62-899 µmol mol-1 from 4-40 ppm B), suggesting that these parameters may need to be taken into account for paleorecords spanning large salinity changes (~ 2 per mil) and for samples grown in seawater whose boron concentration ([B]SW) differs from modern by more than 0.25 ppm. While our results are consistent with the predominant incorporation of the charged borate species B(OH)4 into foraminiferal calcite, the behavior of the partition coefficient KD (defined as [B/Ca]calcite/B(OH)4/HCO3seawater) cannot be explained by borate incorporation alone, and suggests the involvement of other pH-sensitive ions such as CO3 For a given increase in seawater B(OH)4, the corresponding increase in B/Ca is stronger when B(OH)4 is raised by increasing [B]SW than when it is raised by increasing pH. These results suggest that B incorporation controls should be reconsidered. Additional insight is gained from laser-ablation ICP-MS profiles, which reveal variable B/Ca distributions within individual shells.

ABSTRACT. Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood sugar, due to the body does not produce enough insulin, or because cells do not respond to the insulin produced. The insulin is a hormone that helps the glucose to reach to outlying tissues and the nervous system to supply energy. There are currently two types of therapies applied in subcutaneous tissue: the first one consists in using the intensive therapy with an insulin pen, and the other one is by continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII). The biggest problems of this therapy are the delays caused by the absorption of carbohydrates and insulin, and the delays introduced by the subcutaneous glucose sensor that measures glucose from interstitial fluid, it is suitable to control glucose blood. To try to improve these patients quality of life, work is being done on the development of an artificial endocrine pancreas (PEA) consisting of a subcutaneous insulin pump, a subcutaneous glucose sensor and an algorithm of glucose control, which would calculate the bolus that the pump would infuse to patient. This project aims to design a controller for closed-loop therapy, with the objective of obtain an optimal regulation of blood glucose level. The design of this controller will be formed using the theory of internal model control (IMC). This theory is based on the uncertainties given by a model to feedback the system control. Output model, in comparison with the actual process gives the uncertainty of the plant model, compared to the real plant. Since the theory of the internal model, these differences occur at high frequencies, the theory proposes IMC as a low pass filter regulator in series with the inverse model of the plant to get the required behavior. In addition, it will implement a Smith Predictor to minimize the effects of the delay measurement sensor. The project for the viability of PEA has adapted the classic IMC controller using the gains static of glucose model from the subcutaneous infusion and subcutaneous measuring. In simulation the SemiClosed-Loop controller get on the normoglycemia range, requiring patient intervention announce the bolus priming connected to intakes. Using an SCL control with the Smith Predictor improves the outcome because a variable about intakes is added to the controller through patient intervention.
