omega-Transaminases have been evaluated as biocatalysts in the reductive amination of organoselenium acetophenones to the corresponding amines, and in the kinetic resolution of racemic organoselenium amines. Kinetic resolution proved to be more efficient than the asymmetric reductive amination. By using these methodologies we were able to obtain both amine enantiomers in high enantiomeric excess (up to 99%). Derivatives of the obtained optically pure o-selenium 1-phenylethyl amine were evaluated as ligands in the palladium-catalyzed asymmetric alkylation, giving the alkylated product in up to 99% ee.

The adsorption kinetics of phosphate onto Nb(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O was investigated at initial phosphate concentrations 10 and 50 mg L(-1). The kinetic process was described by a pseudo second-order rate model very well. The adsorption thermodynamics was carried out at 298, 308, 318, 328 and 338 K. The positive values of both Delta H and Delta S suggest an endothermic reaction and increase in randomness at the solid-liquid interface during the adsorption. Delta G values obtained were negative indicating a spontaneous adsorption process. The Langmuir model described the data better than the Freundlich isotherm model. The peak appearing at 1050 cm(-1) in IR spectra after adsorption was attributed to the bending vibration of adsorbed phosphate. The effective desorption could be achieved using water at pH 12. This study presents the results of a mature landfill leachate treated by a homogeneous catalytic ozonation process with ions Fe(2+) and Fe(3+) at acidic pH. Quality assessments were performed using Taguchi`s method (L(8) design). Strong synergism was observed statistically between molecular ozone and ferric ions, pointing to their catalytic effect on (center dot)OH generation. The achievement of better organic matter depollution rates requires an ozone flow of 5 L h(-1) (590 mg h(-1) O(3)) and a ferric ion concentration of 5 mg L(-1).

The palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of potassium alkynyltrifluoroborates with a chemoenzymatically derived deoxyconduritol is described. Six new compounds were synthesized in moderate to good yields. The alkynyl cross-coupling reaction can be effected using 10 mol% of Pd(PPh(3))(4) as Catalyst in toluene-H(2)O in the presence Of Cs(2)CO(3) as the inorganic base. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. This work describes the catalytic activity of manganese and iron porphyrins, Mn and Fe(TFPP)Cl, covalently immobilized on the aminofunctionalized supports montmorillonite K-10 (MontX) and silica (SilX), where X= 1 or 2 represents the length of the organic chain (""arms"") binding the metalloporphyrin to the support. These systems were characterized by UV-vis and Electronic Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), and they were used as catalysts in the oxidation of carbamazepine (CBZ) by the oxidants iodosylbenzene (PhIO) and hydrogen peroxide. The manganese porphyrin (MnP) catalysts proved to be efficient and selective for the epoxide, the main CBZ metabolite in natural systems. MnMont1 was an excellent catalyst when PhIO was used as oxidant, even better than the same MnP in homogeneous system. Supports bearing short ""arms"" led to the best yields. Although H2O2 is an environmentally friendly oxidant, low product yields were obtained when it was employed in CBZ oxidation. Fe(TFPP)CI immobilized on aminofunctionalized supports was not an efficient catalyst, probably due to the presence of Fe(H) species in the matrix, which led to the less reactive intermediate PFe(IV)(O). The Jacobsen catalyst, Mn(salen), was immobilized in chitosan membrane. The obtained Mn(salen)-Chit was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TC), differential thermal analysis (DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), degree of N-acetylation by (1)H NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of the encapsulated catalyst displayed the typical bands of the Jacobsen catalyst, and the FT-IR presented an absorption band characteristic of the imines present in the Jacobsen catalyst. The chitosan membranes were available, in a biphasic system, as a catalytic barrier between two different phases: an organic substrate phase (cyclooctene or styrene) and an aqueous solution of either m-CPBA, t-BuOOH or H(2)O(2), and dismissing the need for phase transfer agents and leading to better product yields compared with the catalyst in homogeneous medium. This new catalyst did not leach from the support and was reused many times, leading to high turnover frequencies. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work reports on the synthesis, characterization and applications of the new cerium(III) beta-diketonate Ce(hdacac)(3)(Hhdacac)(3)center dot 2H(2)O (where hdacac and Hhdacac denote, respectively, the hexadecylpentane-2,4-dionate and hexadecylpentane-2,4-dione ligands) as catalyst for the reduction of automotive emissions. Due to its amphiphilic character, this complex can be solubilized in non-polar fuels, thus generating cerium(IV) oxide particles, which efficiently catalyze the oxidation of diesel/biodiesel soot. The synthesized complex was characterized by microanalysis (C, H), thermal analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and specific surface area measurements attested that the complex can act as a soluble precursor of homogeneous CeO(2) spherical nanoparticles. The efficiency of this compound as catalyst for the reduction of soot emission was evaluated through static studies (comprising carbon black oxidation), which confirmed that increasing concentrations of the complex result in lower carbon black oxidation temperatures and lower activation Gibbs free energies. Dynamic studies, which embraced the combustion of diesel/biodiesel blends containing different amounts of the solubilized complex in a stationary motor, allowed a comparative evaluation of the soot emission through diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. These analyses provided very emphatic evidences of the efficiency of this new cerium complex for the control of soot emission in diesel/biodiesel motors. (c) 2009 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Animal cloning by nuclear transfer (NT) has made the production of transgenic animals using genetically modified donor cells possible and ensures the presence of the gene construct in the offspring. The identification of transgene insertion sites in donor cells before cloning may avoid the production of animals that carry undesirable characteristics due to positional effects. This article compares blastocyst development and competence to establish pregnancies of bovine cloned embryos reconstructed with lentivirus-mediated transgenic fibroblasts containing either random integration of a transgene (random integration group) or nuclear transfer derived transgenic fibroblasts with known transgene insertion sites submitted to recloning (recloned group). In the random integration group, eGFP-expressing bovine fetal fibroblasts were selected by fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS) and used as nuclei donor cells for NT. In the recloned group, a fibroblast cell line derived from a transgenic cloned fetus was characterized regarding transgene insertion and submitted to recloning. The recloned group had higher blastocyst production (25.38 vs. 14.42%) and higher percentage of 30-day pregnancies (14.29 vs. 2.56%) when compared to the random integration group. Relative eGFP expression analysis in fibroblasts derived from each cloned embryo revealed more homogeneous expression in the recloned group. In conclusion, the use of cell lines recovered from transgenic fetuses after identification of the transgene integration site allowed for the production of cells and fetuses with stable transgene expression, and recloning may improve transgenic animal yields.

The paper studies existence, uniqueness, and stability of large-amplitude periodic cycles arising in Hopf bifurcation at infinity of autonomous control systems with bounded nonlinear feedback. We consider systems with functional nonlinearities of Landesman-Lazer type and a class of systems with hysteresis nonlinearities. The method is based on the technique of parameter functionalization and methods of monotone concave and convex operators. (C) 2001 Academic Press.

We develop a new iterative filter diagonalization (FD) scheme based on Lanczos subspaces and demonstrate its application to the calculation of bound-state and resonance eigenvalues. The new scheme combines the Lanczos three-term vector recursion for the generation of a tridiagonal representation of the Hamiltonian with a three-term scalar recursion to generate filtered states within the Lanczos representation. Eigenstates in the energy windows of interest can then be obtained by solving a small generalized eigenvalue problem in the subspace spanned by the filtered states. The scalar filtering recursion is based on the homogeneous eigenvalue equation of the tridiagonal representation of the Hamiltonian, and is simpler and more efficient than our previous quasi-minimum-residual filter diagonalization (QMRFD) scheme (H. G. Yu and S. C. Smith, Chem. Phys. Lett., 1998, 283, 69), which was based on solving for the action of the Green operator via an inhomogeneous equation. A low-storage method for the construction of Hamiltonian and overlap matrix elements in the filtered-basis representation is devised, in which contributions to the matrix elements are computed simultaneously as the recursion proceeds, allowing coefficients of the filtered states to be discarded once their contribution has been evaluated. Application to the HO2 system shows that the new scheme is highly efficient and can generate eigenvalues with the same numerical accuracy as the basic Lanczos algorithm.

Isothermal calorimetry has been used to examine the effect of thermodynamic non-ideality on the kinetics of catalysis by rabbit muscle pyruvate kinase as the result of molecular crowding by inert cosolutes. The investigation, designed to detect substrate-mediated isomerization of pyruvate kinase, has revealed a 15% enhancement of maximal velocity by supplementation of reaction mixtures with 0.1 M proline, glycine or sorbitol. This effect of thermodynamic non-ideality implicates the existence of a substrate-induced conformational change that is governed by a minor volume decrease and a very small isomerization constant; and hence, substantiates earlier inferences that the rate-determining step in pyruvate kinase kinetics is isomerization of the ternary enzyme product complex rather than the release of products.
