Fractional-order derivatives appear in various engineering applications including models for viscoelastic damping. Damping behavior of materials, if modeled using linear, constant coefficient differential equations, cannot include the long memory that fractional-order derivatives require. However, sufficiently great rnicrostructural disorder can lead, statistically, to macroscopic behavior well approximated by fractional order derivatives. The idea has appeared in the physics literature, but may interest an engineering audience. This idea in turn leads to an infinite-dimensional system without memory; a routine Galerkin projection on that infinite-dimensional system leads to a finite dimensional system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) (integer order) that matches the fractional-order behavior over user-specifiable, but finite, frequency ranges. For extreme frequencies (small or large), the approximation is poor. This is unavoidable, and users interested in such extremes or in the fundamental aspects of true fractional derivatives must take note of it. However, mismatch in extreme frequencies outside the range of interest for a particular model of a real material may have little engineering impact.

In modern evolutionary divergence analysis the role of geological information extends beyond providing a timescale, to informing molecular rate variation across the tree. Here I consider the implications of this development. I use fossil calibrations to test the accuracy of models of molecular rate evolution for placental mammals, and reveal substantial misspecification associated with life history rate correlates. Adding further calibrations to reduce dating errors at specific nodes unfortunately tends to transfer underlying rate errors to adjacent branches. Thus, tight calibration across the tree is vital to buffer against rate model errors. I argue that this must include allowing maximum bounds to be tight when good fossil records permit, otherwise divergences deep in the tree will tend to be inflated by the interaction of rate errors and asymmetric confidence in minimum and maximum bounds. In the case of placental mammals I sought to reduce the potential for transferring calibration and rate model errors across the tree by focusing on well-supported calibrations with appropriately conservative maximum bounds. The resulting divergence estimates are younger than others published recently, and provide the long-anticipated molecular signature for the placental mammal radiation observed in the fossil record near the 66 Ma Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event.

The Palu Metamorphic Complex (PMC) is exposed in a late Cenozoic orogenic belt in NW Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is a composite terrane comprising a gneiss unit of Gondwana origin, a schist unit composed of meta-sediments deposited along the SE Sundaland margin in the Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary, and one or more slivers of amphibolite with oceanic crust characteristics. The gneiss unit forms part of the West Sulawesi block underlying the northern and central sections of the Western Sulawesi Province. The presence of Late Triassic granitoids and recycled Proterozoic zircons in this unit combined with its isotopic signature suggests that the West Sulawesi block has its origin in the New Guinea margin from which it rifted in the late Mesozoic. It docked with Sundaland sometime during the Late Cretaceous. U–Th–Pb dating results for monazite suggest that another continental fragment may have collided with the Sundaland margin in the earliest Miocene. High-pressure (HP) and ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) rocks (granulite, peridotite, eclogite) are found as tectonic slices within the PMC, mostly along the Palu–Koro Fault Zone, a major strike-slip fault that cuts the complex. Mineralogical and textural features suggest that some of these rocks resided at depths of 60–120 km during a part of their histories. Thermochronological data (U–Th–Pb zircon and 40Ar/39Ar) from the metamorphic rocks indicate a latest Miocene to mid-Pliocene metamorphic event, which was accompanied by widespread granitoid magmatism and took place in an extensional tectonic setting. It caused recrystallization of, and new overgrowths on, pre-existing zircon crystals, and produced andalusite–cordierite–sillimanite–staurolite assemblages in pelitic protoliths, indicating HT–LP (Buchan-type) metamorphism. The PMC was exhumed as a core complex at moderate rates (c. 0.7–1.0 mm/yr) accompanied by rapid cooling in the Plio-Pleistocene. Some of the UHP rocks were transported to the surface at significantly higher rates (⩾16 mm/yr). The results of our study do not support recent plate tectonic reconstructions that propose a NW Australia margin origin for the West Sulawesi block (e.g. Hall et al., 2009).

Internal structures of extraordinarily luminescent semiconductor nanoparticles are probed with photoelectron spectroscopy, establishing a gradient alloy structure as an essential ingredient for the observed phenomenon. Comparative photoluminescence lifetime measurements provide direct evidence for a minimization of nonradiative decay channels because of the removal of interfacial defects due to a progressive change in the lattice parameters in such graded structures, exhibiting a nearly single exponential decay Quantum mechanical, calculations suggest a differential extent of spatial collapse of the electron and the hole wave functions in a way that helps to enhance the photoluminescence efficiency, while at the same time increasing the lifetime of the excited state, as observed in the experiments.

We combine first-principles calculations with EXAFS studies to investigate the origin of high oxygen storage capacity in ceria-zirconia solid solution, prepared by solution combustion method. We find that nanocrystalline Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 can be reduced to Ce0.5Zr0.5O1.57 by H-2 upto 850 degrees C with an OSC of 65 cc/gm which is extremely high. Calculated local atomic-scale structure reveals the presence of long and short bonds resulting in four-fold coordination of the cations, confirmed by the EXAFS studies. Bond valence analysis of the microscopic structure and energetics is used to evaluate the strength of binding of different oxide ions and vacancies. We find the presence of strongly and weakly bound oxygens, of which the latter are responsible for the higher oxygen storage capacity in the mixed oxides than in the pure CeO2.

Represented by approximately 85 species, Hemidactylus is one of the most diverse and widely distributed genera of reptiles in the world. In the Indian subcontinent, this genus is represented by 28 species out of which at least 13 are endemic to this region. Here, we report the phylogeny of the Indian Hemidactylus geckos based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers sequenced from multiple individuals of widely distributed as well as endemic congeners of India. Results indicate that a majority of the species distributed in India form a distinct clade whose members are largely confined to the Indian subcontinent thus representing a unique Indian radiation. The remaining Hemidactylus geckos of India belong to two other geographical clades representing the Southeast Asian and West-Asian arid zone species. Additionally, the three widely distributed, commensal species (H. brookii, H. frenatus and H. flaviviridis) are nested within the Indian radiation suggesting their Indian origin. Dispersal-vicariance analysis also supports their Indian origin and subsequent dispersal out-of-India into West-Asian arid zone and Southeast Asia. Thus, Indian subcontinent has served as an important arena for diversification amongst the Hemidactylus geckos and in the evolution and spread of its commensal geckos. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. Thermal conductivities of glasses at low temperatures show strikingly similar behavior irrespective of their chemical composition. While for T<1 K the thermal conductivity can be understood in the phenomenological tunneling model; the ‘‘universal plateau’’ in the temperature interval 15>T>2 K is totally unexplained. While Rayleigh scattering of phonons by structural disorder should be the natural cause for limiting the mean free path of phonons in this temperature range, it has been concluded before that in glasses a strong enough source of such scattering does not exist. In this study we show by a proper structural analysis in at least one material (namely, silica) that a strong enough source of Rayleigh scattering of phonons in glasses does exist so that the ‘‘universal plateau’’ can be explained without invoking any new mechanism. This may be for the first time that the low-temperature property of a structural glass has been correlated to its structure.

The synthesis of 6-acetyl-2,2-dimethyl-8-methoxychromene (lc), a naturally occurring isomer of encecalin (la)h~s been described startilag from 2,2,6- trimethyl-8-methoxyclaromene (2e) which was obtained from creosol (4) in two steps involving condensation of the phenol with malic acid to the coumarin (3), followed by Grignard reaction with CHaMgI. The transformation of (2e) to the natural product (lc) was effeeted by oxidative dehydrogenation by DDQ of the 6-meth~r function to the formyl group (2f), Grignard reaction to the carbinol (2g) and finally its oxidation to the acetyl moiety (lc), the sequence of the essential steps schematically summarised as : Ar-CHs --* Ar-CHO --* Ar-CH (OH) CHs --* Ar---COCHs.

We present the x-ray absorption data at the oxygen K-edge using total yield technique for Gd1−xPrxba2Cu3O7 (x= 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0). The data clearly to oxygen that the holes doped in the GdBa2Cu3O7 due to oxygen composition are not removed by Pr doping even for the x = 1.0 sample, suggesting that Pr is predominantly in the formally trivalent state. However, the data also clearly indicate the evidence of hybridization effects between the Pr3+ and the adjacent CuO2 layers. This is suggested to be responsible for the progressive suppression of Tc and the metallicity with Pr doping in these systems.
