Among organic materials, spirobifluorene derivatives represent a very attractive class of materials for electronic devices. These compounds have high melting points, glass transitions temperatures and morphological stability, which makes these materials suitable for organic electronic applications. In addition, some of spirobifluorenes can form porous supramolecular associations with significant volumes available for the inclusion of guests. These molecular associations based on the spirobifluorenes are noteworthy because they are purely molecular analogues of zeolites and other microporous solids, with potential applications in separation, catalysis, sensing and other areas.

We have formed and characterized polycrystalline diamond films with surfaces having hydrogen terminations, oxygen terminations, or fluorine terminations, using a small, simple and novel plasma gun to bombard the diamond surface, formed by plasma assisted CVD in a prior step, with ions of the wanted terminating species. The potential differences between surface regions with different terminations were measured by Kelvin Force Microscopy (KFM). The highest potential occurred for oxygen termination regions and the lowest for fluorine. The potential difference between regions with oxygen terminations and hydrogen terminations was about 80 mV, and between regions with hydrogen terminations and fluorine terminations about 150 mV. Regions with different terminations were identified and imaged using the secondary electron signal provided by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). since this signal presents contrast for surfaces with different electrical properties. The wettability of the surfaces with different terminations was evaluated, measuring contact angles. The sample with oxygen termination was the most hydrophilic, with a contact angle of 75 degrees. hydrogen-terminated regions with 83 degrees, and fluorine regions 93 degrees, the most hydrophobic sample. Ionic liquids have been shown to be highly effective lubricants for a steel on aluminium system. This work shows that the chemistry of the anion and cation are critical in achieving maximum wear protection. The performance of the ILs containing a diphenylphosphate (DPP) anion all showed low wear, as did some of the tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate (FAP) and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (NTf2) anion containing ILs. However, in the case of the FAP and NTf2 based systems, a cation dependence was observed, with relatively poor wear resistance obtained in the case of an imidazolium FAP and two pyrrolidinium NTf2 salts, probably due to tribocorrosion caused by the fluorine reaction with the aluminium substrate. The systems exhibiting poor performance generally had a lower viscosity, which also impacts on their tribological properties. Those ILs that exhibited low wear were shown to have formed protective tribofilms on the aluminium alloy surface.

Inorganic phosphate fertilizers may contain radionuclides, heavy metals and fluorine. This paper presents the possible environmental hazards from Tapira phosphate rocks and their (by) products (Brazil) utilized as phosphate fertilizers. The activity concentration of U-238, U-234, Ra-226 and K-40 in Tapira phosphate rocks is within the world range for these rock types. The Th-232 activity concentration is higher than the mean reported in phosphate rocks. A value of 2184 nGy h(-1) was obtained for the exposure dose rate in Tapira phosphate deposit area, which is indicative of a high background radiation area. The flotation-separation process causes the incorporation of no more than 9%, 11 % and 24% of radionuclides, heavy metals and fluorine, respectively, into the phosphate concentrate. The radionuclides and heavy metals existing in phosphate fertilizers applied in Brazilian crops according to the recommended rates, do not raise their concentration in soils to harmful levels. Glasses in PbGeO3-PbF-CdF2 and GeO2-PbO-PbF2-CdF2 systems were studied and the fluorine losses during synthesis were investigated. Samples were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman scattering spectroscopy. The use of stoichiometric germanate glass, PbGeO3, instead of introducing individual oxides (GeO2 + PbO) lead to decreasing fluorine losses, as detected by a fluorine ion selective electrode. The main structural features obtained from vibrational spectroscopy could be described by a metagermanate basic structure permeating fluorine rich regions. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Nuclear medicine imaging techniques such as PET are of increasing relevance in pharmaceutical research being valuable (pre)clinical tools to non-invasively assess drug performance in vivo. Therapeutic drugs, e.g. chemotherapeutics, often suffer from a poor balance between their efficacy and toxicity. Here, polymer based drug delivery systems can modulate the pharmacokinetics of low Mw therapeutics (prolonging blood circulation time, reducing toxic side effects, increasing target site accumulation) and therefore leading to a more efficient therapy. In this regard, poly-N-(2-hydroxypropyl)-methacrylamide (HPMA) constitutes a promising biocompatible polymer. Towards the further development of these structures, non-invasive PET imaging allows insight into structure-property relationships in vivo. This performant tool can guide design optimization towards more effective drug delivery. Hence, versatile radiolabeling strategies need to be developed and establishing 18F- as well as 131I-labeling of diverse HPMA architectures forms the basis for short- as well as long-term in vivo evaluations. By means of the prosthetic group [18F]FETos, 18F-labeling of distinct HPMA polymer architectures (homopolymers, amphiphilic copolymers as well as block copolymers) was successfully accomplished enabling their systematic evaluation in tumor bearing rats. These investigations revealed pronounced differences depending on individual polymer characteristics (molecular weight, amphiphilicity due to incorporated hydrophobic laurylmethacrylate (LMA) segments, architecture) as well as on the studied tumor model. Polymers showed higher uptake for up to 4 h p.i. into Walker 256 tumors vs. AT1 tumors (correlating to a higher cellular uptake in vitro). Highest tumor concentrations were found for amphiphilic HPMA-ran-LMA copolymers in comparison to homopolymers and block copolymers. Notably, the random LMA copolymer P4* (Mw=55 kDa, 25% LMA) exhibited most promising in vivo behavior such as highest blood retention as well as tumor uptake. Further studies concentrated on the influence of PEGylation (‘stealth effect’) in terms of improving drug delivery properties of defined polymeric micelles. Here, [18F]fluoroethylation of distinct PEGylated block copolymers (0%, 1%, 5%, 7%, 11% of incorporated PEG2kDa) enabled to systematically study the impact of PEG incorporation ratio and respective architecture on the in vivo performance. Most strikingly, higher PEG content caused prolonged blood circulation as well as a linear increase in tumor uptake (Walker 256 carcinoma). Due to the structural diversity of potential polymeric carrier systems, further versatile 18F-labeling strategies are needed. Therefore, a prosthetic 18F-labeling approach based on the Cu(I)-catalyzed click reaction was established for HPMA-based polymers, providing incorporation of fluorine-18 under mild conditions and in high yields. On this basis, a preliminary µPET study of a HPMA-based polymer – radiolabeled via the prosthetic group [18F]F-PEG3-N3 – was successfully accomplished. By revealing early pharmacokinetics, 18F-labeling enables to time-efficiently assess the potential of HPMA polymers for efficient drug delivery. Yet, investigating the long-term fate is essential, especially regarding prolonged circulation properties and passive tumor accumulation (EPR effect). Therefore, radiolabeling of diverse HPMA copolymers with the longer-lived isotope iodine-131 was accomplished enabling in vivo evaluation of copolymer P4* over several days. In this study, tumor retention of 131I-P4* could be demonstrated at least over 48h with concurrent blood clearance thereby confirming promising tumor targeting properties of amphiphilic HPMA copolymer systems based on the EPR effect.

Minimal scan times in rapid fluorine-19 MRI using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) have been on the order of 10 s. Because of the very short T1 relaxation time of SF6 (T1 = 1.65 ms), high receiver bandwidths are necessary to allow for a high number of excitations. Since high bandwidths cause high levels of electronic noise, SNR per acquisition has been too low to further reduce scan time. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether scan times could be reduced using hexafluoroethane (C2F6), a gas with a longer T1 (T1 = 7.9 ms) at a relatively low bandwidth of 488 Hz/pixel. Gradient-echo images were acquired during and after completion of the wash-in of a 70% C2F6- 30% O2 mixture. Peak SNR values of 16 and 7.9 were observed for coronal projection images acquired within 2 s and 260 ms, respectively. These results demonstrate that subsecond imaging is feasible using C2F6.

In order to constrain the salinity of subduction zone fluids, piston-cylinder experiments have been conducted to investigate the partitioning behaviour of Cl and F in subducted sediments. These experiments were performed at H2O-undersaturated conditions with a synthetic pelite starting composition containing 800 ppm Cl, over a pressure and temperature range of 2.5–4.5 GPa and 630–900 °C. Repetitive experiments were conducted with 1900 ppm Cl + 1000 ppm F, and 2100 ppm Cl. Apatite represents the most Cl-abundant mineral phase, with Cl concentration varying in the range 0.1–2.82 wt%. Affinity for Cl decreases over the following sequence: aqueous fluid > apatite ⩾ melt > other hydrous minerals (phengite, biotite and amphibole). It was found that addition of F to the Cl-bearing starting composition significantly lowers the Cl partition coefficients between apatite and melt (DClAp–melt) and apatite and aqueous fluid (DClAp–aq). Cl–OH exchange coefficients between apatite and melt (KdCl–OHAp–melt) and apatite and aqueous fluid (KdCl–OHAp–aq) were subsequently calculated. KdCl–OHAp–melt was found to vary from 1 to 58, showing an increase with temperature and a decrease with pressure and displaying a regular decrease with increasing H2O content in melt. Mole fractions of Cl and OH in melt were calculated based on an ideal mixing model for H2O, OH, O, Cl and F. The Cl contents of other hydrous minerals (phengite, biotite and amphibole) fall between 200 and 800 ppm, with resultant Cl partition coefficients from 0.02 to 0.49, appearing independent of the bulk Cl and F content. Preliminary data from this study show that the partitioning behaviour of F is strongly in favour of apatite relative to melt and phengite, with DFAp–melt = 15–51. Apatites from representative eclogite facies metasediments were examined and found to have low Cl contents close to ∼100 ppm. Calculations using our experimentally determined KdCl–OHAp–aq of 0.004 at 2.5 GPa, 630 °C indicate a low salinity character (0.5–2 wt% NaCleq) for the fluid formed during dehydration of subducted oceanic sediment at ∼80 km depth.
