Near-infrared (NIR) imaging was used to observe water vapour flow in a gas-solid fluidized bed reactor. The technique consisted of a broadband light, an optical filter with a bandwidth centred on strong water vapour absorptions, a Vidicon NIR camera, a nozzle from which an optically active mixture of gas and water vapour was trans-illuminated by an NIR beam and collected data of transmittance were normalized to actual optical path. The procedure was applied to a thin fluidized bed reactor with a low aspect ratio of tube to particle diameters (D-1/d(p)) in order to validate the wall effect on flow dynamics and mass transfer during the reduction of ceria-silica by hydrogen. High concentrations of water vapour emerged in the vicinity of the wall when the bed was operated at pseudo-static conditions but disappeared when the bed was run at minimum bubbling conditions. This result shows the capability of optical methods with affordable costs to 2D imaging opaque packed bed by using a spatially resolved probe located at the exit, which is of great benefit for in situ visualization of anisotropic concentrations in packed beds under industrially relevant conditions and thus for elucidation of the underlying reaction mechanism and diffusion interactions. Dado o aumento acelerado dos preços dos combustíveis fósseis e as incertezas quanto à sua disponibilidade futura, tem surgido um novo interesse nas tecnologias da biomassa aplicadas à produção de calor, eletricidade ou combustíveis sintéticos. Não obstante, para a conversão termoquímica de uma partícula de biomassa sólida concorrem fenómenos bastante complexos que levam, em primeiro lugar, à secagem do combustível, depois à pirólise e finalmente à combustão ou gasificação propriamente ditas. Uma descrição relativamente incompleta de alguns desses estágios de conversão constitui ainda um obstáculo ao desenvolvimento das tecnologias que importa ultrapassar. Em particular, a presença de elevados conteúdos de matéria volátil na biomassa põe em evidência o interesse prático do estudo da pirólise. A importância da pirólise durante a combustão de biomassa foi evidenciada neste trabalho através de ensaios realizados num reator piloto de leito fluidizado borbulhante. Verificou-se que o processo ocorre em grande parte à superfície do leito com chamas de difusão devido à libertação de voláteis, o que dificulta o controlo da temperatura do reator acima do leito. No caso da gasificação de biomassa a pirólise pode inclusivamente determinar a eficiência química do processo. Isso foi mostrado neste trabalho durante ensaios de gasificação num reator de leito fluidizado de 2MWth, onde um novo método de medição permitiu fechar o balanço de massa ao gasificador e monitorizar o grau de conversão da biomassa. A partir destes resultados tornou-se clara a necessidade de descrever adequadamente a pirólise de biomassa com vista ao projeto e controlo dos processos. Em aplicações de engenharia há particular interesse na estequiometria e propriedades dos principais produtos pirolíticos. Neste trabalho procurou-se responder a esta necessidade, inicialmente através da estruturação de dados bibliográficos sobre rendimentos de carbonizado, líquidos pirolíticos e gases, assim como composições elementares e poderes caloríficos. O resultado traduziu-se num conjunto de parâmetros empíricos de interesse prático que permitiram elucidar o comportamento geral da pirólise de biomassa numa gama ampla de condições operatórias. Para além disso, propôs-se um modelo empírico para a composição dos voláteis que pode ser integrado em modelos compreensivos de reatores desde que os parâmetros usados sejam adequados ao combustível ensaiado. Esta abordagem despoletou um conjunto de ensaios de pirólise com várias biomassas, lenhina e celulose, e temperaturas entre os 600 e 975ºC. Elevadas taxas de aquecimento do combustível foram alcançadas em reatores laboratoriais de leito fluidizado borbulhante e leito fixo, ao passo que um sistema termo-gravimétrico permitiu estudar o efeito de taxas de aquecimento mais baixas. Os resultados mostram que, em condições típicas de processos de combustão e gasificação, a quantidade de voláteis libertada da biomassa é pouco influenciada pela temperatura do reator mas varia bastante entre combustíveis. Uma análise mais aprofundada deste assunto permitiu mostrar que o rendimento de carbonizado está intimamente relacionado com o rácio O/C do combustível original, sendo proposto um modelo simples para descrever esta relação. Embora a quantidade total de voláteis libertada seja estabelecida pela composição da biomassa, a respetiva composição química depende bastante da temperatura do reator. Rendimentos de espécies condensáveis (água e espécies orgânicas), CO2 e hidrocarbonetos leves descrevem um máximo relativamente à temperatura para dar lugar a CO e H2 às temperaturas mais altas. Não obstante, em certas gamas de temperatura, os rendimentos de algumas das principais espécies gasosas (e.g. CO, H2, CH4) estão bem correlacionados entre si, o que permitiu desenvolver modelos empíricos que minimizam o efeito das condições operatórias e, ao mesmo tempo, realçam o efeito do combustível na composição do gás. Em suma, os ensaios de pirólise realizados neste trabalho permitiram constatar que a estequiometria da pirólise de biomassa se relaciona de várias formas com a composição elementar do combustível original o que levanta várias possibilidades para a avaliação e projeto de processos de combustão e gasificação de biomassa.

Remote monitoring of a power boiler allows the supplying company to make sure that equipment is used as supposed to and gives a good chance for process optimization. This improves co-operation between the supplier and the customer and creates an aura of trust that helps securing future contracts. Remote monitoring is already in use with recovery boilers but the goal is to expand especially to biomass-fired BFB-boilers. To make remote monitoring possible, data has to be measured reliably on site and the link between the power plant and supplying company’s server has to work reliably. Data can be gathered either with the supplier’s sensors or with measurements originally installed in the power plant if the plant in question is not originally built by the supplying company. Main goal in remote monitoring is process optimization and avoiding unnecessary accidents. This can be achieved for instance by following the efficiency curves and fouling in different parts of the process and comparing them to past values. The final amount of calculations depends on the amount of data gathered. Sudden changes in efficiency or fouling require further notice and in such a case it’s important that dialogue toward the power plant in question also works.

The study aims to the hydrodynamic characteristics of swirling fluidized bed, using large particles (Geldart D-type) selected from locally available agricultural produce (coffee beans and black pepper). The important variables considered in the present study include percentage area of opening, angle of air injection and the percentage useful area of the distributor. A total of seven distributors have been designed and fabricated for a bed column of 300 mm, namely single row vane type distributors (15˚ and 20˚ vane angle), inclined hole type distributors (15˚ and 20˚ vane angle) and perforated plate distributors. The useful area of distributor of single row vane type, three now vane-type and inclined hole-type distributors are respectively 64%,91% and 94%. The hydrodynamic parameters considered in the present study include distributor pressure drop, air velocity, minimum fluidizing velocity, bed pressure drop, bed height and the bed behaviour. It has been observed that, in general, the distributor pressure drop decreases with an increase in the percentage area of opening, Further, and increase in the area of opening above 17% will not considerably reduce the distributor pressure drop. In the present study, for the distributor with an area of opening 17%, and corresponding to the maximum measured superficial velocity of 4.33 m/s, the distributor pressure drop obtained was 55.25mm of water. The study on the bed behavior revealed that, in a swirling fluidized bed, once swirl motion starts, the bed pressure drop increases with superficial velocity in the outer region and it decreases in the inner region. This means that, with higher superficial velocity, the air might get by-passed through the inner boundary of the bed (around the cone). So, depending on the process for which the bed is used, the maximum superficial velocity is to be limited to have an optimum bed performance.

The thesis presented here unveils an experimental study of the hydrodynamic characteristics of swirling fluidized bed viz. pressure drop across the distributor and the bed, minimum fluidizing velocity, bed behaviour and angle of air injection. In swirling fluidized bed the air is admitted to the bed at an angle 'Ѳ' to the horizontal. The vertical component of the velocity v sin Ѳ causes fluidization and the horizontal component v cos Ѳ contributes to swirl motion of the bed material.The study was conducted using spherical particles having sizes 3.2 mm, 5.5 mm & 7.4 mm as the bed materials. Each of these particles was made from high density polyethylene, nylon and acetal having relative densities of 0.93, 1.05 and 1.47 respectively.The experiments were conducted using conidour type distributors having four rows of slits. Altogether four distributors having angles of air injection (Φ)- 0°, 5°, 10° & 15° were designed and fabricated for the study. The total number of slits in each distributor was 144. The area of opening was 6220 mm2 making the percentage area of opening to 9.17. But the percentage useful area of opening of the distributor was 96.The experiments on the variation of distributor pressure drop with superficial velocity revealed that the distributor pressure drop decreases with angle of air injection. Investigations related to bed hydrodynamics were conducted using 2.5 kg of bed material. The bed pressure drop measurements were made along the radial direction of the distributor at distances of 60 mm, 90 mm, 120 mm & 150 mm from the centre of the distributor. It was noticed that after attaining minimum fluidizing velocity, the bed pressure drop increases along the radial direction of the distributor. But at a radial distance of 90 mm from the distributor centre, after attaining minimum fluidizing velocity the bed pressure drop remains almost constant. It was also observed that the bed pressure drop varies inversely with particle size as well as particle density.An attempt was made to determine the effect of various parameters on minimum fluidizing velocity. It was noticed that the minimum fluidizing velocity varies directly with angle of air injection (Φ), particle size and particle density.The study on the bed behaviour showed that the superficial velocity required for initiating various bed phenomena (such as swirl motion and separation of particles from the cone at the centre) increase with increase in particle size as well as particle density. It was also observed that the particle size and particle density directly influence the superficial velocity required for various regimes of bed behaviour such as linear variation of bed pressure drop, constant bed pressure drop and sudden increase or decrease in bed pressure drop.Experiments were also performed to study the effect of angle of air injection (Φ). It was noticed that the bed pressure drop decreases with angle of air injection. It was also noticed that the angle of air injection directly influence the superficial velocity required for initiating various bed phenomena as well as the various regimes of bed behaviour.

CrN coatings were formed on plain carbon steel by prenitrocarburizing, followed by thermoreactive deposition and diffusion (TRD) in a fluidized bed furnace at 570 °C. During TRD, Cr was transferred from Cr powder in the fluidized bed to the nitrocarburized substrates by gas-phase reactions initiated by reaction of HCl gas with the Cr. The microstructural processes occurring in the white layer, caused by N diffusion toward the surface during this stage were studied. This study compares TRD atmospheres employing inert gas and HCl or inert gas, H2, and HCl. Surface characterization was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and glow-discharge optical-emission spectroscopy (GDOES).

The dynamic characteristics of gas bubbles in fluidized beds are important to determine the heat and mass transfer rates at component surfaces and the treated profiles of components. They also have great impact on the components’ structural, mechanical and physical properties. However, it has been very difficult to monitor those characteristics dynamically. In this paper, a specifically designed fluidized bed was introduced to facilitate the capturing of its dynamic characteristics and a new video image processing and analysis algorithm was developed. The algorithm is robust and adaptive in terms of locating both bubbles and components in beds with a single or multiple components. It has many advantages in dynamic characterization of gas bubbles and monitoring component treatment. By using this algorithm, the properties of gas bubbles over any period of time can be accurately obtained. This technology will provide a potential on-line dynamic monitoring and quality control system for the chemical heat treatment processes with fluidized beds.

The work examines how ferritic nitrocarburising, a common heat treatment process for steels, can be adapted to the fluidised bed furnace. The effect of fluidising powder contamination on repeatability, composition of the reactive gas mixture, the development of nitrocarburised tool steel microstructure and resulting wear properties were investigated.
