Light to the East? The Finnish Lutheran Mission and the Soviet Union 1967 1973 The Cold War affected the lives of Christian churches, especially in Europe. Besides the official ecumenical relations between east and west, there existed unofficial activity from west to east, such as smuggling Bibles and distributing information about the severe condition of human rights in the USSR. This study examines this kind of unofficial activity originating in Finland. It especially concentrates on the missionary work to the Soviet Union done by the Finnish Lutheran Mission (FLM, Suomen Evankelisluterilainen Kansanlähetys) founded in 1967. The work for Eastern Europe was organised through the Department for the Slavic Missions. FLM was founded within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, but it was not connected to the church on an organisational level. In addition to the strong emphasis on the Lutheran confession, FLM presented evangelical theology. The fundamental work of the Department for the Slavic Missions was to organise the smuggling of Bibles and other Christian literature to the Soviet Union and other countries behind the iron curtain. They also financed several Christian radio programmes produced and aired mainly by the international Trans World Radio. The Department diversified its activity to humanitarian help by distributing material help such as clothes and shoes to the unregistered evangelical and baptist groups, which were called the underground churches . In Finland the Department focused on information services. It published its own magazine, Valoa idässä (Light in the East), 5 to 6 times per year. Through the magazine and by distributing samizdat material received from the unregistered Christian groups, it discussed and reported the violations of human rights in the Soviet Union, especially when the unregistered Christian groups were considered the victims. The resistance against the Soviet Union was not as much political but religious: the staff of the Department were religious and revivalist young people who thought, for instance, that communism was in some way an apocalyptic world power revealed in the Bible. Smuggling Bibles was discussed widely in the Finnish media and even in parliament and the Finnish Security Police (SUPO, Suojelupoliisi) and in the Lutheran Church. From the church s point of view, this kind of missionary work was understandable but bothersome. Through their ecumenical connections, the bishops knew the critical situation of churches behind the iron curtain very well, but wanted to act diplomatically and cautiously to prevent causing harm to ecumenical or political relations. The leftist media and members of parliament especially accused the work of the Department of being illegal and endangering relations between Finland and the Soviet Union. SUPO did not consider the work of the Department as illegal activity or as a threat to Finnish national security.

Conjunctival Melanoma in Finland 1967-2000: a population-based study

Eighty-five new cases of conjunctival melanoma (CM) were diagnosed in Finland between 1967 and 2000. The annual crude incidence of CM was 0.51 per million inhabitants. The average age-adjusted incidence of 0.54 doubled during the study period, analogous to the increase in the incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma during this period, suggesting a possible role for ultraviolet radiation in its pathogenesis. Nonlimbal tumors were more likely than limbal ones to recur and they were associated with decreased survival. Increasing tumor thickness and recurrence of the primary tumor were other clinical factors related to death from CM. The histopathologic specimens of 85 patients with CM melanoma were studied for cell type, mitotic count, tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and macrophages, mean vascular density, extravascular matrix loops and networks, and mean diameter of the ten largest nucleoli (MLN). The absence of epithelioid cells, increasing mitotic count and small MLN were associated with shorter time to recurrence according to the Cox univariate regression. None of the histopathologic variables was associated with mortality from CM. Four (5%) patients had a CM limited to the cornea without evidence of a tumor other than primary acquired melanosis of the conjunctiva. Because there are no melanocytes in the cornea, the origin of these melanomas most likely is the limbal conjunctiva. All four corneally displaced CM were limited to the epithelium, and none of the patients developed metastases. An anatomic sub-classification based on my patients and world literature was developed for corneally displaced CM. In 20 patients the metastatic pattern could be determined. Ten patients had initial systemic metastases detected, nine had initial regional metastases, and in one case the two types were detected simultaneously. The patients most likely to develop either type of initial metastases were those with nonlimbal conjunctival melanoma, those with a primary tumor more than 2 mm thick, and those with a recurrent conjunctival melanoma. Approximately two thirds of the patients had limbal CM, a location associated with good prognosis. One third, however, had a primary CM originating outside the limbus. In these patients the chance of developing local recurrences as well as systemic metastases was significantly higher than in patients with limbal CM. Each recurrence accompanies an increased risk of developing metastases, and recurrences contribute to death along with increasing tumor thickness and nonlimbal tumor location. In my data, an equal number of patients with initial locoregional and systemic metastasis existed. Patients with limbal primary tumors less than 2 mm in thickness rarely experienced metastases, unless the tumor recurred. Consequently, the patients most likely to benefit from sentinel lymph node biopsy are those who have nonlimbal tumors, CM that are over 2 mm thick, or recurrent CM. The histopathology of CM differs from that of uveal melanoma. Microvascular factors did not prove to be of prognostic importance, possibly due to the fact that CM at least as often disseminates first to the regional lymph nodes, unlike uveal melanoma that almost always disseminates hematogenously.

On the physical and biological oceanography near the entrance of the Gulf of California, October 1966-August 1967

ENGLISH: A study of the temporal and spatial distribution of larval tunas and the concomitant oceanic conditions was made in cooperation with the Direccion General de Pesca e Industrias Conexas of Mexico. Field work consisted of eight hydrographic cruises made from October 1966 through August 1967 near the entrance of the Gulf of California. From January through April, surface currents were southerly at velocities up to 20 cm/sec; currents in June were variable in direction and mostly less than 10 cm/sec; by August the surface current was northerly at 10-15 cm/sec. Surface winds were usually secondary to the distribution of mass as an influence on the surface circulation. Currents at 100 m were generally similar in direction to those at the surface, but the water moved more slowly. Between the surface and 100 m, southbound currents crossed the entrance of the Gulf at velocities of 5-10 cm/sec during January and April, forming frontal boundaries with the California Current water, which often occurred south of the entrance. From April to August, the median concentration of surface chlorophyll a increased from 0.65 to 0.97 mg/m3, while the median productivity increased from 5.6 mgC/m3/day in April to 17.8 mgC/m3/day in June before returning to 2.6 mgC/m3/day in August. Primary productivity was closely correlated with the concentration of surface chlorophyll a. Productivity was generally higher in the vicinity of the Gulf than that found for water in the open Pacific. Productivity was highest near Islas Las Tres Marias and second highest near Cabo San Lucas, both locations of local upwelling. The standing crop of phytoplankton was shown to be subjected to progressively heavier grazing pressure in the spring and summer by zooplankton. SPANISH: Un estudio de la distribución temporal y espacial de las larvas de atún y de las condiciones oceánicas concomitantes fue realizado en cooperación con la Dirección General de Pesca e Industrias Conexas de México. El trabajo experimental consistió en ocho cruceros hidrográficos realizados desde octubre 1966 hasta agosto 1967, cerca a la entrada del Golfo de California. De enero a abril, las corrientes superficiales fueron meridionales alcanzando velocidades hasta de 20 cm/seg; las corrientes en junio fueron variables en dirección y la mayoría con una velocidad de menos de 10 cm/seg; en agosto la corriente superficial fue septentrional a 10-15 cm/seg, Los vientos superficiales fueron por lo común secundarios a la dístríbucíón de la masa, como una influencia de la circulación superficial. Las corrientes a 100 m fueron generalmente similares en dirección a las de la superficie, pero el agua se movió más lentamente. Geographical catch distribution of yellowfin and skipjack tuna in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, 1967-1970, and fleet and total catch statistics, 1962-1970

ENGLISH: Logbook records of tuna vessels fishing in the eastern Pacific Ocean were used to prepare charts showing the distribution of yellowfin tuna and skipjack catches by i-degree area, by quarter of the year, and by gear, for the years 1967-1970. Recent changes in the geographical distribution of yellowfin catch are illustrated. Also given are annual catch statistics and the composition of the international tuna fishing fleets which operated in the Commission's Yellowfin Regulatory Area each year, 1962-1970. SPANISH: Los registros de los cuadernos de bitácora de los barcos pesqueros de atún en el Océano Pacífico oriental se usaron para preparar gráficos que presentan para los años de 1967-1970, la distribución de captura del atún aleta amarilla y barrilete por área de 1 grado, trimestre del año y, por las artes. Se ilustran los recientes cambios en la distribución geográfica de la captura del atún aleta amarilla. Se presentan también las estadísticas de captura anual y la composición de la flota internacional de pesca, que explota cada año el Area Reglamentaria de la Comisión, 1962-1970. A review of the Japanese longline fishery for tunas and billfishes in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, 1967-1970

ENGLISH: This report deals with the Japanese longline fishery for tunas and billfishes from 1967 through 1970, extending the studies made by Kume and Joseph (1969a, 1969b). The distribution of effort and catch is discussed and evaluated, and the changes in apparent abundance are examined. An analysis is made of the sexual maturity and size composition of the fish, and a brief comparison of the size composition of the catches from the longline and the surface fisheries is included. SPANISH: Este informe analiza la pesca palangrera japonesa de atunes y peces espada desde 1967 a 1970, ampliando los estudios hechos por Kume y Joseph (1969a, 1969b). Se discute y avalúa la distribución del esfuerzo y la captura, y los cambios en la abundancia aparente. Se hace un análisis de la madurez sexual y de la composición de talla de los peces y una breve comparación entre la composición de talla de los peces capturados en la pesca palangrera y la epípelágíca.
