Electrodeposition of Co-W alloy coatings has been carried out with DC and PC using gluconate bath at different pH. These coatings are characterized for their structure, morphology and chemical composition by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Alloy coatings plated at pH8 are crystalline, whereas coatings electrodeposited at pH5 are nanocrystalline in nature. XPS studies have demonstrated that as-deposited alloy plated at pH8 with DC contain only Co2+ and W6+ species, whereas that alloy plated at pH5 has significant amount of Co-0 and W-0 along with Co2+ and W6+ species. Again, Co2+ and W6+ are main species in all as-deposited PC plated alloys in both pH. Co-0 concentration increases upon successive sputtering of all alloy coatings. In contrast, mainly W6+ species is detected in the following layers of all alloys plated with PC. Alloys plated at pH5 show higher microhardness compared to their pH8 counterparts.

Direct current electrodeposition of Co-P alloy coatings were carried out using gluconate bath and they were characterized by employing techniques like XRD, FESEM, DSC and XPS. Broad XRD lines demonstrate the amorphous nature of Co-P coatings. Spherical and rough nodules are observed on the surface of coatings as seen from FESEM images. Three exothermic peaks around 290, 342 and 390 degrees C in DSC profiles of Co-P coatings could be attributed to the crystallization and formation of Co2P phase in the coatings. As-deposited coatings consist of Co metal and oxidized Co species as revealed by XPS studies. Bulk alloy P (P delta-) as well as oxidized P (P5+) are present on the surface of coatings. Concentrations of Co metal and P delta- increase with successive sputtering of the coating. Observed microhardness value is 1005 HK when Co-P coating obtained from 10 g L-1 NaH2PO2 is heated at 400 degrees C that is comparable with hard chromium coatings.

Undoped and (Co, Ag) co-doped ZnO nanostructure powders are synthesized by chemical precipitation method without using any capping agent and annealed in air ambient at 500 A degrees C for 1 h. Here, the Ag concentration is fixed at 5 mol% and Co concentration is increased from 0 to 5 mol%. The X-ray diffraction studies reveal that undoped and doped ZnO powders consist of pure hexagonal structure and nano-sized crystallites. The novel Raman peak at 530 cm(-1) has corroborated with the Co doped ZnO nanoparticles. Moreover, the PL studies reveal that as the Co doping concentration increases and it enters into ZnO lattice as substitutional dopant, it leads to the increase of oxygen vacancies (Vo) and zinc interstitials (Zn-i). From the magnetization measurements, it is noticed that the co-doped ZnO nanostructures exhibit considerably robust ferromagnetism i.e. 4.29 emu g(-1) even at room temperature. These (Co, Ag) co-doped ZnO nanopowders can be used in the fabrication of spintronic and optoelectronic device applications.

In the present work, Co1-xMnxFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized by the low-temperature auto-combustion method. The thermal decomposition process was investigated by means of differential and thermal gravimetric analysis (TG-DTA) that showed the precursor yield the final product above 450 degrees C. The phase purity and crystal lattice symmetry were estimated from X-ray diffraction (XRD). Microstructural features observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrates that the fine clustered particles were formed with an increase in average grain size with Mn2+ content. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) study confirms the formation of spinel ferrite. Room temperature magnetization measurements showed that the magnetization M-s increases from 29 to 60 emu/g and H-c increases from 13 to 28 Oe with increase in Mn2+ content, which implies that these materials may be applicable for magnetic data storage and recording media. The solvothermal reaction of CoCl(2)4H(2)O and 4,4-sulfonyldibenzoic acid (H(2)SDBA) resulted in the formation of a three-dimensional coordination polymer Co-3(C14H8O6S)(3)(DMA)(2)(MeOH)].DMA (Ia) consisting of trinuclear Co-3 oxo-cluster units. The Co-3 trimeric units are connected by SDBA(2-) anions leading to a three dimensional structure with a pcu topology. The terminal methanol molecules could be exchanged in a single crystal to single crystal (SCSC) fashion by other similar solvent molecules (ethanol, acetonitrile, water, ethyleneglycol). Magnetic studies on the parent compound, Ia, indicate antiferromagnetic interactions between the central metal atoms.

The preparation of ZnO nanorod films decorated with cobalt-acetate (CoAc) electrocatalyst and its activity for photoelectrolysis of water have been demonstrated. The photochemically prepared CoAc catalyst is chemically and morphologically similar to the electrochemically prepared CoAc catalyst. The on-set potential of oxygen evolution reaction is lower on CoAc-ZnO photoanode in relation to bare ZnO photoanode. There is a three to four fold increase in photooxidation current of OER due to the presence of CoAc co-catalyst on ZnO. Thus, the photochemically prepared CoAc on ZnO is an alternative and efficient co-catalyst for photoelectrochemical oxygen evolution reaction. The enhancement in photocatalytic activity of ZnO by the CoAc catalyst photochemically deposited from acetate buffer solution is significantly greater than the cobalt-phosphate (CoPi) co-catalyst deposited from phosphate buffer solution. A plausible microkinetic model has been proposed for the CO oxidation reaction catalysed by palladium (Pd) with the kinetic parameters obtained from the literature. A robust rate expression using the reaction route analysis has been developed for the presented microkinetic scheme and the obtained rate expressions have been validated against the experimental data presented in the literature. A wide range of experimental conditions ranging from single Pd crystals under ultra-high vacuum conditions and impregnated Pd used for fixed bed experiments under atmospheric pressure has been used to validate the reaction mechanism. Carboxylic acids, amides and imides are key organic systems which provide understanding of molecular recognition and binding phenomena important in biological and pharmaceutical settings. In this context, studies of their mutual interactions and compatibility through co-crystallization may pave the way for greater understanding and new applications of their combinations. Extensive co-crystallization studies are available for carboxylic acid/amide combinations, but only a few examples of carboxylic acid/imide co-crystals are currently observed in the literature. The non-formation of co-crystals for carboxylic acid/imide combinations has previously been rationalized, based on steric and computed stability factors. In the light of the growing awareness of eutectic mixtures as an alternative outcome in co-crystallization experiments, the nature of various benzoic acid/cyclic imide combinations is established in this paper. Since an additional functional group can provide sites for new intermolecular interactions and, potentially, promote supramolecular growth into a co-crystal, benzoic acids decorated with one or more hydroxyl groups have been systematically screened for co-crystallization with one unsaturated and two saturated cyclic imides. The facile formation of an abundant number of hydroxybenzoic acid/cyclic carboximide co-crystals is reported, including polymorphic and variable stoichiometry co-crystals. In the cases where co-crystals did not form, the combinations are shown invariably to result in eutectics. The presence or absence and geometric disposition of hydroxyl functionality on benzoic acid is thus found to drive the formation of co- crystals or eutectics for the studied carboxylic acid/imide combinations.

Transition metal atom (Co) substituted synthetic tetrahedrite compounds Cu12-xCoxSb4S13 (x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0) were prepared by solid state synthesis. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed tetrahedrite as the main phase, whereas for the compounds with x = 0, 0.5 a trace of impurity phase Cu3SbS4 was observed. The surface morphology showed a large grain size with low porosity, which indicated appropriate compaction for the hot pressed samples. The phase purity, as monitored by Electron Probe Micro Analysis (EPMA) is in good agreement with the XRD data. The elemental composition for all the compounds almost matched with the nominal composition. The X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) data showed that Cu existed in both +1 and +2 states, while Sb exhibited +3 oxidation states. Elastic modulus and hardness showed a systematic variation with increasing Co content. The electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient increased with increase in the doping content due to the decrease in the number of carriers caused by the substitution of Co2+ on the Cu1+ site. The positive Seebeck coefficient for all samples indicates that the dominant carriers are holes. A combined effect of resistivity and Seebeck coefficient leads to the maximum power factor of 1.76 mW m(-1) K-2 at 673 K for Cu11.5Co0.5Sb4S13. This could be due to the optimization in the carrier concentration by the partial substitution of Co2+ on both the Cu1+ as well as Cu2+ site at the same doping levels, which is also supported by the XPS data. The total thermal conductivity systematically decreased with increase of doping content as it is mainly influenced by the decrease of carrier thermal conductivity. The maximum thermoelectric figure of merit zT = 0.98 was obtained at 673 K for Cu11.5Co0.5Sb4S13. (C) 2015 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Co3O4 catalysts were prepared by combustion synthesis using different fuels glycine (G), ODH (O) and urea (U). Morphological changes of the materials were observed by using different fuels. The prepared catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, BET and DRIFTS analysis. All compounds showed 100% conversion of CO below 175C. The prepared catalysts exhibited very high stability and conversions did not decrease even after 50 h of continuous operation. The oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of materials was measured by H-2-TPR analysis. Co3O4-O is having high OSC among the synthesized catalysts. The activation energies of these catalysts were found to be in the range of 42.3-64.8 kJ mol(-1). With DRIFTS analysis, the surface carbonates, superoxide anions, adsorbed CO, O-2 species on the catalyst surface were found and this information was used to develop a detailed reaction pathway. A kinetic model was developed with the help of proposed mechanism and used to fit the data. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This study presents a plausible dual-site mechanism and microkinetic model for CO oxidation over palladium-substituted ceria incorporating the theoretical oxygen storage capacity of different-catalysts into the kinetic model. A rate expression without prior assumption of rate-determining steps has been developed for the proposed microkinetic model using reaction route analysis. Experiments were conducted using various percentages of palladium in ceria that were synthesized by solution combustion. Obtained catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectra, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area measurements. A detailed mechanism was, developed, and the kinetic parameters and rate expression were validated with the conversion data obtained in the presence of the catalysts. Furthermore, a reduced rate expression based on rate-determining step and most abundant reactive intermediate approximation was obtained and tested against the original rate expression for different experimental conditions. From the results obtained it was concluded that the simulated rate predictions matched the experimental trend with reasonable accuracy, validating the kinetic parameters proposed it this study.

The effect of HCl and SO_2 on CO oxidation in pulverised coal flames was investigated experimentally and kinetically in an entrained flow combustion reactor. Two bituminous coals (German 'Goettelborn' and a Polish coal) were used as fuels with a feeding rate of 1 or 1.5 kg/h. HCl or SO_2 is introduced into the reactor premixed with the primary air. Experimental results indicate that HCl addition may inhibit CO oxidation in coal flames and increases CO emission. Reducing temperature in the reactor will enhance the inhibitory effect of HCl on CO oxidation. The measured CO profiles along the reactor height clearly show that the addition of HCl may inhibit CO oxidation. In the experimental range of SO_2 addition. The inhibiting effect of SO_2 on CO oxidation is less significant than HCl. A detailed kinetic mechanism is used to model the reactions. And the controlling reactions are analysed.
