Report of the final workshop on education, capacity development and monitoring in support of Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary (BRMS) management, Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka, 23 May, 2015

Objectives of the workshop included: presentation of research to stakeholders; briefing of stakeholders on project objectives, contents and activities; to get stakeholder perceptions and suggestions.

Education and the 'universalist' idiom of empire: Irish National School Books in Ireland and Ontario

This paper compares the founding of the elementary school systems of Ireland and Ontario in the nineteenth century. The systems shared a common set of textbooks that had originated in Ireland. Using examples from a number of these books, which were part of a series that had been specially prepared for the Irish national school system, founded in 1831, and information from archive sources on policy and administration in both countries, the paper argues that there was a common, ‘universalist’, imperialist ideology being promulgated in both systems. The article focuses on these ‘universalist’ principles rather than undertaking a detailed analysis of the textbooks.

Sexual Health and Sexuality Education Needs of Young People in Care: a Survey of Service-provider Perspectives. Report No 1.

Aim: This study aims to describe the sex education and sexual health needs of young people in care, and to explore the degree to which these needs are being met by current provision.As part of the Department for Children and Youth Affairs ‘National Strategy for Data and Research on Children’s Lives, 2011-2016’, the HSE Crisis Pregnancy Programme (CPP) and HSE Children and Families Social Services Care Group have co-commissioned a team of researchers from UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems, Insights Health and Social Research and Queen’s University Belfast to examine the sex education and sexual health needs of young people in care in the Republic of Ireland. The project is supported by a steering group of senior personnel from both partner organisations (CPP and CFS) and external advisors. The study involves data collection with young people, care providers, birth parents and foster parents using a mixed methods approach. Findings from each stage of the study will be combined to inform recommendations for policy and practice.
