Swift heavy ion induced changes in microstructure and surface morphology of vapor deposited FeâNi based metallic glass thin films have been investigated by using atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Ion beam irradiation was carried out at room temperature with 103 MeV Au9+ beam with fluences ranging from 3 1011 to 3 1013 ions/cm2. The atomic force microscopy images were subjected to power spectral density analysis and roughness analysis using an image analysis software. Clusters were found in the image of as-deposited samples, which indicates that the film growth is dominated by the island growth mode. As-deposited films were amorphous as evidenced from X-ray diffraction; however, high resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements revealed a short range atomic order in the samples with crystallites of size around 3 nm embedded in an amorphous matrix. X-ray diffraction pattern of the as-deposited films after irradiation does not show any appreciable changes, indicating that the passage of swift heavy ions stabilizes the short range atomic ordering, or even creates further amorphization. The crystallinity of the as-deposited FeâNi based films was improved by thermal annealing, and diffraction results indicated that ion beam irradiation on annealed samples results in grain fragmentation. On bombarding annealed films, the surface roughness of the films decreased initially, then, at higher fluences it increased. The observed change in surface morphology of the irradiated films is attributed to the interplay between ion induced sputtering, volume diffusion and surface diffusion

The Ultra Weak Variational Formulation (UWVF) is a powerful numerical method for the approximation of acoustic, elastic and electromagnetic waves in the time-harmonic regime. The use of Trefftz-type basis functions incorporates the known wave-like behaviour of the solution in the discrete space, allowing large reductions in the required number of degrees of freedom for a given accuracy, when compared to standard finite element methods. However, the UWVF is not well disposed to the accurate approximation of singular sources in the interior of the computational domain. We propose an adjustment to the UWVF for seismic imaging applications, which we call the Source Extraction UWVF. Differing fields are solved for in subdomains around the source, and matched on the inter-domain boundaries. Numerical results are presented for a domain of constant wavenumber and for a domain of varying sound speed in a model used for seismic imaging.

A numerical method to approximate partial differential equations on meshes that do not conform to the domain boundaries is introduced. The proposed method is conceptually simple and free of user-defined parameters. Starting with a conforming finite element mesh, the key ingredient is to switch those elements intersected by the Dirichlet boundary to a discontinuous-Galerkin approximation and impose the Dirichlet boundary conditions strongly. By virtue of relaxing the continuity constraint at those elements. boundary locking is avoided and optimal-order convergence is achieved. This is shown through numerical experiments in reaction-diffusion problems. Copyright (c) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The integration of carbon nanotubes in conjunction with a chemical or biological recognition element into a semiconductor field-effect device (FED) may lead to new (bio)chemical sensors. In this study, we present a new concept to develop field-effect-based sensors, using a light-addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS) platform modified with layer-by-layer (LbL) films of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers. Film growth was monitored for each layer adsorbed on the LAPS chip by Measuring current-voltage (IIV) curves. The morphology of the films was analyzed via atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), revealing the formation of a highly interconnected nanostructure of SWNTs-network into the dendrimer layers. Constant current (CC) Measurements showed that the incorporation of the PAMAM/SWNT LbL film containing LIP to 6 bilayers onto the LAPS Structure has a high pH sensitivity of ca. 58 mV/pH. The biosensing ability of the devices was tested for penicillin G via adsorptive immobilization of the enzyme penicillinase atop the LgL film. LAPS architectures modified with the LbL film exhibited higher sensitivity, ca. 100 mV/decade, in comparison to ca. 79 mV/decade for all unmodified LAPS, which demonstrates the potential application of the CNT-LbL Structure in field-effect-based (bio)chemical sensors.

The use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) combined with other materials in nanostructured films has demonstrated their versatility in tailoring specific properties. In this study, we produced layer-by-layer (LbL) films of polyamidoamine-PAMAM-incorporating multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PAMAM-NT) alternated with nickel tetrasulfonated metallophthalocyanine (NiTsPc), in which the incorporation of CNTs enhanced the NiTsPc redox process and its electrocatalytic properties for detecting dopamine. Film growth was monitored by UV-vis spectroscopy, which pointed to an exponential growth of the multilayers, whose roughness increased with the number of bilayers according to atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis. Strong interactions between -NH3+ terminal groups from PAMAM and -SO3- from NiTsPc were observed via infrared spectroscopy, while the micro-Raman spectra confirmed the adsorption of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto the LbL film containing NiTsPc. Cyclic voltammograms presented well-defined electroactivity with a redox pair at 0.86 and 0.87 V, reversibility, a charge-transfer controlled process, and high stability up to 100 cycles. The films were employed successfully in dopamine (DA) detection, with limits of detection and quantification of 10(-7) and 10(-6) mol L-1, respectively. Furthermore, films containing immobilized CNTs could distinguish between DA and its natural interferent, ascorbic acid (AA).

This paper presents a study of AISI 1040 steel corrosion in aqueous electrolyte of acetic acid buffer containing 3.1 and 31 x 10(-3) mol dm(-3) of Na(2)S in both the presence and absence of 3.5 wt.% NaCl. This investigation of steel corrosion was carried out using potential polarization, and open-circuit and in situ optical microscopy. The morphological analysis and classification of types of surface corrosion damage by digital image processing reveals grain boundary corrosion and shows a non-uniform sulfide film growth, which occurs preferentially over pearlitic grains through successive formation and dissolution of the film. The fabrication of controlled molecular architectures is essential for organic devices, as is the case of emission of polarized light for the information industry. In this study, we show that optimized conditions can be established to allow layer-by-layer (LbL) films of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV)+dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) to be obtained with anisotropic properties. Films with five layers and converted at 110 degrees C had a dichroic ratio delta = 2.3 and order parameter r = 34%, as indicated in optical spectroscopy and emission ellipsometry data. This anisotropy was decreased with the number of layers deposited, with delta = 1.0 for a 75-layer LbL PPV + DBS film. The analysis with atomic force microscopy showed the formation of polymer clusters in a random growth process with the normalized height distribution being represented by a Gaussian function. In spite of this randomness in film growth, the self-covariance function pointed to a correlation between clusters, especially for thick films. In summary, the LbL method may be exploited to obtain both anisotropic films with polarized emission and regular, nanostructured surfaces. (c) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Liposomes have been applied to many fields as nanocarriers, especially in drug delivery as active molecules may be entrapped either in their aqueous interior or onto the hydrophobic surface. In this paper we describe the fabrication of layer-by-layer (LbL) films made with liposomes incorporating the anti-inflammatory ibuprofen. The liposomes were made with dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl choline (DPPC), dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl glycerol (DPPG) and palmitoyl oleoyl phosphatidyl glycerol (POPG). LbL films were assembled via alternate adsorption of the polyamidoamine dendrimer (PAMAM), generation 4, and liposomes containing ibuprofen. According to dynamic light scattering measurements, the incorporation of ibuprofen caused DPPC and DPPG liposonnes to become more stable, with a decrease in diameter from 140 to 74 nm and 132 to 63 nm, respectively. In contrast, liposomes from POPG became less stable, with an increase in size from 110 to 160 nm after ibuprofen incorporation. These results were confirmed by atomic force microscopy images of LbL films, which showed a large tendency to rupture for POPG liposomes. Film growth was monitored using nanogravimetry and UV-Vis spectroscopy, indicating that growth stops after 10 bilayers. The release of ibuprofen obtained with fluorescence measurements was slower for the liposomes, with decay times of 9.2 and 8.5 h for DPPG and POPG liposomes, respectively, than for the free drug with a decay time of 5.2 h. Ibuprofen could also be released from the LbL films made with DPPG and POPG liposomes, which is promising for further uses in patches.

Thin films of MnO(2) nanoparticles were grown using the layer-by-layer method with poly (diallyldimetylammonium) as the intercalated layer. The film growth was followed by UV-vis, electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), and atomic force microscopy. Linear growth due to electrostatic immobilization of layers was observed up to 30 bilayers, but electrical connectivity was maintained only for 12 MnO(2)/PPDA bilayers. The electrochemical characterization of this film in 1-butyl-2,3-dimethyl-imidazolium (BMMI) bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) (BMMITFSI) with and without addition of a lithium salt indicated a higher electrochemical response of the nanostructured electrode in the lithium-containing electrolyte. On the basis of EQCM experiments, it was possible to confirm that the charge compensation process is achieved mainly by the TFSI anion at short times (<2 s) and by BMMI and lithium cations at longer times. The fact that large ions like TFSI and BMMI participate in the electroneutrality is attributed to the redox reaction that occurs at the superficial sites and to the high concentration of these species compared to that of lithium cations.

The concern related to the environmental degradation and to the exhaustion of natural resources has induced the research on biodegradable materials obtained from renewable sources, which involves fundamental properties and general application. In this context, we have fabricated thin films of lignins, which were extracted from sugar cane bagasse via modified organosolv process using ethanol as organic solvent. The films were made using the vacuum thermal evaporation technique (PVD, physical vapor deposition) grown up to 120 nm. The main objective was to explore basic properties such as electrical and surface morphology and the sensing performance of these lignins as transducers. The PVD film growth was monitored via ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy and quartz crystal microbalance, revealing a linear relationship between absorbance and film thickness. The 120 nm lignin PVD film morphology presented small aggregates spread all over the film surface on the nanometer scale (atomic force microscopy, AFM) and homogeneous on the micrometer scale (optical microscopy). The PVD films were deposited onto Au interdigitated electrode (IDE) for both electrical characterization and sensing experiments. In the case of electrical characterization, current versus voltage (I vs V) dc measurements were carried out for the Au IDE coated with 120 nm lignin PVD film, leading to a conductivity of 3.6 x 10(-10) S/m. Using impedance spectroscopy, also for the Au IDE coated with the 120 nm lignin PVD film, dielectric constant of 8.0, tan delta of 3.9 x 10(-3)) and conductivity of 1.75 x 10(-9) S/m were calculated at 1 kHz. As a proof-of-principle, the application of these lignins as transducers in sensing devices was monitored by both impedance spectroscopy (capacitance vs frequency) and I versus time dc measurements toward aniline vapor (saturated atmosphere). The electrical responses showed that the sensing units are sensible to aniline vapor with the process being reversible. AFM images conducted directly onto the sensing units (Au IDE coated with 120 nm lignin PVD film) before and after the sensing experiments showed a decrease in the PVD film roughness from 5.8 to 3.2 nm after exposing to aniline.
