We report all optical clock recovery based on a monolithic integrated four-section amplified feedback semiconductor laser (AFL), with the different sections integrated based on the quantum well intermixing (QWI) technique. The beat frequency of an AFL is continuously tunable in the range of 19.8-26.3 GHz with an extinction ratio above 8 dB, and the 3-dB linewidth is close to 3 MHz. All-optical clock recovery for 20 Gb/s was demonstrated experimentally using the AFL, with a time jitter of 123.9 fs. Degraded signal clock recovery was also successfully demonstrated using both the dispersion and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) degraded signals separately.

We present simulation results on how power output-input characteristic Instability in Distributed FeedBack -DFB semiconductor laser diode SLA can be employed to implemented Boolean logic device. Two configurations of DFB Laser diode under external optical injection, either in the transmission or in the reflective mode of operation, is used to implement different Optical Logic Cells (OLCs), called the Q- and the P-Device OLCs. The external optical injection correspond to two inputs data plus a cw control signal that allows to choose the Boolean logic function to be implement. DFB laser diode parameters are choosing to obtain an output-input characteristic with the values desired. The desired values are mainly the on-off contrast and switching power, conforming shape of hysteretic cycle. Two DFB lasers in cascade, one working in transmission operation and the other one in reflective operation, allows designing an inputoutput characteristic based on the same respond of a self-electrooptic effect device is obtained. Input power for a bit'T' is 35 uW(70uW) and a bit "0" is zero for all the Boolean function to be execute. Device control signal range to choose the logic function is 0-140 uW (280 uW). The tail-free operation of an overdriven gain-switched distributed feedback (DFB) laser by spectral filtering was demonstrated. The filtering was realized using a mechanically tunable fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The unfiltered and filtered signals were traced by corresponding oscilloscope. The spectral filtering removed the nonlinearly chirped components resulting in the pulse shortening. The results showed unwanted relaxation in the overdriven DFB laser were supressed by using a steep-edge notch filter.

A novel architecture for microwave/millimeter-wave signal generation and data modulation using a fiber-grating-based distributed feedback laser has been proposed in this letter. For demonstration, a 155.52-Mb/s data stream on a 16.9-GHz subcarrier has been transmitted and recovered successfully. It has been proved that this technology would be of benefit to future microwave data transmission systems.

We demonstrate experimentally a novel and simple tunable all-optical incoherent negative-tap fiber-optic transversal filter based on a distribution feedback laser diode and high reflection fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). In this filter, variable time delay is provided by cascaded high reflection fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), and the tuning of the filter is realized by tuning different FBG to match the fixed carrier wavelength, or adjusting the carrier wavelength to fit different FBG. The incoherent negative tapping is realized by using the carrier depletion effect in a distribution feedback laser diode.

We demonstrate that a distributed Raman amplification scheme based on random distributed feedback (DFB) fiber laser enables bidirectional second-order Raman pumping without increasing relative intensity noise (RIN) of the signal. This extends the reach of 10 × 116 Gb/s DP-QPSK WDM transmission up to 7915 km, compared with conventional Raman amplification schemes. Moreover, this scheme gives the longest maximum transmission distance among all the Raman amplification schemes presented in this paper, whilst maintaining relatively uniform and symmetric signal power distribution, and is also adjustable in order to be highly compatible with different nonlinearity compensation techniques, including mid-link optical phase conjugation (OPC) and nonlinear Fourier transform (NFT).

A new method of analyzing the chirp characteristics of directly modulated lasers and integrated laser-modulators is presented in this paper. Phase-circuit has been introduced into the circuit model of distributed feedback (DFB) lasers in the analysis. Therefore, the chirp characteristics of the device can be obtained by simulating the modified circuit model. The simulation results agree well with the published data. Furthermore, this modified model is combined with the circuit model of electroabsorption (EA) modulators to simulate the chirp characteristics of the monolithic integration of a DFB laser and an EA modulator. The simulation is focused on the dependence of the frequency chirp of the integrated device on the isolation resistance between laser and modulator. Much lower chirp can be seen in the integrated lightwave source compared to the directly modulated laser.

Comprehensive computer modelling has been used to investigate the dependence of dispersion penalty on transmission length in an optical communications system employing a directly modulated 2.5Gbit/s DFB laser source and an optimised fibre grating dispersion compensator. Two grating apodization schemes, tanh and Gaussian, have been compared. The 2dB dispersion penalty transmission distance is shown to be approximately 520km along standard monomode fibre after compensation with a 5cm tanh grating. This represents a great improvement over the 150km range expected for a similar uncompensated system.

A distributed feedback laser with the sampled grating has been designed and fabricated. The typical threshold current of the sampled grating based DFB laser is 32 mA, and the output power is about 10mW at the injected current of 100 mA. The lasing wavelength is 1.5564 mu m, which is the -1(st) order mode of the sampled grating.

A new device of two parallel distributed feedback ( DFB) laser integrated monolithically with Y-branch waveguide coupler was fabricated by means of quantum well intermixing. Optical microwave signal was generated in the Y-branch waveguide coupler through frequency beating of the two laser modes coming from two DFB lasers in parallel, which had a small difference in frequency. Continuous rapidly tunable optical microwave signals from 13 GHz to 42 GHz were realized by adjusting independently the driving currents injected into the two DFB lasers.

A novel integratable and high speed InGaAsP multi-quantum well (MQW) complex-coupled distributed feedback (DFB) laser is successfully fabricated on a semi-insulating substrate. The fabricated ridge DFB laser exhibits a threshold current of 26 mA, a slope efficiency of 0.14 W.A(-1) and a side mode suppression ratio of 40 dB together with a 3 dB bandwidth of more than 8 GHz. The device is suitable for 10 Gbit/s optical fiber communication.

A new method for fabricating electroabsorption modulator integrated with a distributed feedback laser (EML) was proposed. With the method we fabricated a selective area growth double stack active layer EML (SAG-DSAL-EML). Through comparing with other fabrication methods of EMLs, the characters and the merits of the new method presented in this paper were discussed.
