We show that tubes of melt cast Bi-2212 used as current leads for LTS magnets can also act as efficient magnetic shields. The magnetic screening properties under an axial DC magnetic field are characterized at several temperatures below the liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K). Two main shielding properties are studied and compared with those of Bi-2223, a material that has been considered in the past for bulk magnetic shields. The first property is related to the maximum magnetic flux density that can be screened, Blim; it is defined as the applied magnetic flux density below which the field attenuation measured at the centre of the shield exceeds 1000. For a cylinder of Bi-2212 with a wall thickness of 5 mm and a large ratio of length over radius, Blim is evaluated to 1 T at T = 10 K. This value largely exceeds the Blim value measured at the same temperature on similar tubes of Bi-2223. The second shielding property that is characterized is the dependence of Blim with respect to variations of the sweep rate of the applied field, dBapp/dt. This dependence is interpreted in terms of the power law E = Ec(J/Jc)^n and allows us to determine the exponent n of this E(J) characteristics for Bi-2212. The characterization of the magnetic field relaxation involves very small values of the electric field. This gives us the opportunity to experimentally determine the E(J) law in an unexplored region of small electric fields. Combining these results with transport and AC shielding measurements, we construct a piecewise E(J) law that spans over 8 orders of magnitude of the electric field.

We study the magnetic shielding properties of hybrid ferromagnetic/ superconductor (F/S) structures consisting of two coaxial cylinders, with one of each material. We use an axisymmetric finite-element model in which the electrical properties of the superconducting tube are modeled by a nonlinear E-J power law with a magnetic-field-dependent critical current density whereas the magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic material take saturation into account. We study and compare the penetration of a uniform axial magnetic field in two cases: 1) a ferromagnetic tube placed inside a larger superconducting tube (Ferro-In configuration) and 2) a ferromagnetic tube placed outside the superconducting one (Ferro-Out configuration). In both cases, we assess how the ferromagnetic tube improves the shielding properties of the sole superconducting tube. The influence of the geometrical parameters of the ferromagnetic tube is also studied: It is shown that, upon an optimal choice of the geometrical parameters, the range of magnetic fields that are efficiently shielded by the high-temperature superconductor tube alone can be increased by a factor of up to 7 (2) in a Ferro-Out (Ferro-In) configuration. The optimal configuration uses a 1020 carbon steel with a thickness of 2 mm and a height that is half that of the superconducting cylinder (80 mm). © 2009 IEEE.

Magnetic shielding efficiency was measured on high- Tc superconducting hollow cylinders subjected to either an axial or a transverse magnetic field in a large range of field sweep rates, dBapp/dt. The behaviour of the superconductor was modelled in order to reproduce the main features of the field penetration curves by using a minimum number of free parameters suitable for both magnetic field orientations. The field penetration measurements were carried out on Pb-doped Bi-2223 tubes at 77K by applying linearly increasing magnetic fields with a constant sweep rate ranging between 10νTs-1 and 10mTs-1 for both directions of the applied magnetic field. The experimental curves of the internal field versus the applied field, Bin(Bapp), show that, at a given sweep rate, the magnetic field for which the penetration occurs, Blim, is lower for the transverse configuration than for the axial configuration. A power law dependence with large exponent, n′, is found between Blim and dBapp/dt. The values of n′ are nearly the same for both configurations. We show that the main features of the curves B in(Bapp) can be reproduced using a simple 2D model, based on the method of Brandt, involving a E(J) power law with an n-exponent and a field-dependent critical current density, Jc(B), (following the Kim model: Jc = Jc0(1+B/B1)-1). In particular, a linear relationship between the measured n′-exponents and the n-exponent of the E(J) power law is suggested by taking into account the field dependence of the critical current density. Differences between the axial and the transverse shielding properties can be simply attributed to demagnetizing fields. © 2009 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Creasing in thin shells admits large deformation by concentrating curvatures while relieving stretching strains over the bulk of the shell: after unloading, the creases remain as narrow ridges and the rest of the shell is flat or simply curved. We present a helically creased unloaded shell that is doubly curved everywhere, which is formed by cylindrically wrapping a flat sheet with embedded foldlines not axially aligned. The finished shell is in a state of uniform self-stress and this is responsible for maintaining the Gaussian curvature outside of the creases in a controllable and persistent manner. We describe the overall shape of the shell using the familiar geometrical concept of a Mohr's circle applied to each of its constituent features-the creases, the regions between the creases, and the overall cylindrical form. These Mohr's circles can be combined in view of geometrical compatibility, which enables the observed shape to be accurately and completely described in terms of the helical pitch angle alone. The linear water wave scattering and radiation by an array of infinitely long horizontal circular cylinders in a two-layer fluid of infinite depth is investigated by use of the multipole expansion method. The diffracted and radiated potentials are expressed as a linear combination of infinite multipoles placed at the centre of each cylinder with unknown coefficients to be determined by the cylinder boundary conditions. Analytical expressions for wave forces, hydrodynamic coefficients, reflection and transmission coefficients and energies are derived. Comparisons are made between the present analytical results and those obtained by the boundary element method, and some examples are presented to illustrate the hydrodynamic behavior of multiple horizontal circular cylinders in a two-layer fluid. It is found that for two submerged circular cylinders the influence of the fluid density ratio on internal-mode wave forces is more appreciable than surface-mode wave forces, and the periodic oscillations of hydrodynamic results occur with the increase of the distance between two cylinders; for four submerged circular cylinders the influence of adding two cylinders on the wave forces of the former cylinders is small in low and high wave frequencies, but the influence is appreciable in intermediate wave frequencies.

The two-dimensional problems concerning the interaction of linear water waves with cylinders of arbitrary shape in two-layer deep water are investigated by use of the Boundary Integral Equation method (BIEM). Simpler new expressions for the Green functions are derived, and verified by comparison of results obtained by BIEM with these by an analytical method. Examined are the radiation and scattering of linear waves by two typical configurations of cylinders in two-layer deep water. Hydrodynamic behaviors including hydrodynamic coefficients, wave forces, reflection and transmission coefficients and energies are analyzed in detail, and some interesting physical phenomena are observed.

A universal Biot number, which not only describes the susceptibility of ceramic cylinders to quenching but also determines the duration that ceramic cylinders are subjected to thermal stress during thermal shock, is theoretically obtained. The analysis proves that thermal shock failure of ceramic cylinders with a Biot number greater than the critical value is a rapid process, which only occurs in the initial heat conduction regime. The results provide a guide to the selection of ceramic materials for thermostructural engineering, with particular reference to thermal shock.

We have investigated systematically the morphology of thin films spin-coated from solutions of a semicrystalline diblock copolymer, poly(L-lactic acid)-block-polystyrene (PLLA-b-PS), in solvents with varying selectivity. In neutral solvents (chloroform and tetrahydrofuran (THF)), a spinodal-like pattern was obtained and the pattern boundary was sharpened by diluting the solution. Meanwhile, loose spherical associates, together with larger aggregates composed of these associates by unimer bridges, formed partly due to crystallization of the PLLA blocks in relatively concentrated solutions. In slightly PS-selective solvent (e.g., benzene), both loose and compact spherical micelles were obtained, depending on the polymer concentration, coexisting with unimers. When enhancing the selectivity with mixed solvents, for example, mixing the neutral solvent and the slightly selective solvent with a highly PS-selective solvent, CS2, loose assemblies (nanorods in CS2/THF mixtures and polydisperse aggregates in CS2/benzene mixtures) and well-developed lamellar micelles were obtained.

Effective elastic properties of piezoelectric composites containing an infinitely long, radially polarized cylinder embedded in an isotropic non-piezoelectric matrix are theoretically investigated under an external strain field. Analytical solutions of elastic displacement and electric potentials are exactly derived, and the effective elastic responses are formulated in the dilute limit. Meanwhile, a vanishing piezoelectric response mechanism is revealed in the piezoelectric composite containing radially polarized cylinders. Furthermore, it is shown that the effective elastic properties can be enhanced (or reduced) due to the increase of the piezoelectric (or dielectric) constants of the cylinders. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. This paper describes an experimental investigation into the surface heat transfer coefficient of finned metal cylinders in a free air stream. Eight cast aluminium alloy cylinders were tested with four different fin pitches and five different fin lengths. The cylinders and their fins were designed to be representative of those found on a motorcycle engine. Each electrically heated cylinder was mounted in a wind tunnel and subjected to a range of air speeds between 2 and 20 m/s. The surface heat transfer coefficient, h, was found primarily to be a function of the air speed and the fin separation, with fin length having a lesser effect. The coefficient increases with airspeed and as the fins are separated or shortened. It was also noted that a limiting value of coefficient exists, influenced only by airspeed. Above the limiting value the surface heat transfer could not be increased by further separation of the fins or reduction in their length.
