Examination of scatological motifs in Théophile de Viau’s (1590-1626) libertine, or ‘cabaret’ poetry is important in terms of how the scatological contributes to the depiction of the Early Modern body in the French lyric.1 This essay does not examine Théophile’s portrait of the body strictly in terms of the ‘Baroque’ or the ‘neo-Classical.’ Rather, it argues that the scatological context in which he situates the body (either his, or those of others), reflects a keen sensibility of the body representative of the transition between these two eras. Théophile reinforces what Bernard Beugnot terms the body’s inherent ‘eloquence’ (17), or what Patrick Dandrey describes as an innate ‘textuality’ in what the body ‘writes’ (31), and how it discloses meaning. The poet’s scatological lyric, much of which was published in the Pamasse Satyrique of 1622, projects a different view of the body’s ‘eloquence’ by depicting a certain realism and honesty about the body as well as the pleasure and suffering it experiences. This Baroque realism, which derives from a sense of the grotesque and the salacious, finds itself in conflict with the Classical body which is frequently characterized as elegant, adorned, and ‘domesticated’ (Beugnot 25). Théophile’s private body is completely exposed, and, unlike the public body of the court, does not rely on masking and pretension to define itself. Mitchell Greenberg contends that the body in late sixteenth-century and early seventeenth-century French literature is often depicted in a chaotic manner because, ‘the French body politic was rent by tumultuous religious and social upheavals’ (62).2 While one could argue that Théophile’s portraits of a syphilis-ridden narrators are more a reflection of his personal agony rather than that of France as a whole, what emerges in Théophile is an emphasis on the movement, if not decomposition of the body.3 Given Théophile’s public persona and the satirical dimension of his work, it is difficult to imagine that the degeneration he portrays is limited only to his individual experience. On a collective level, Théophile reflects what Greenberg calls ‘a continued, if skewed apprehension of the world in both its physical and metaphysical dimensions’(62–3) typical of the era. To a large extent, the body Théophile depicts is a scatological body, one whose deterioration takes the form of waste, disease, and evacuation as represented in both the private and public domain. Of course, one could cast aside any serious reading of Théophile’s libertine verse, and virtually all of scatological literature for that matter, as an immature indulgence in the prurient. Nonetheless, it was for his dissolute behavior and his scatological poetry that Théophile was imprisoned and condemned to death. Consequently, this part of his work merits serious consideration in terms of the personal and poetic (if not occasionally political) statement it represents. With the exception of Claire Gaudiani’s outstanding critical edition of Théophile’s cabaret lyric, there exist no extensive studies of the poet’s libertine œuvre.4 Clearly however, these poems should be taken seriously with respect to their philosophical and aesthetic import. As a consequence, the objective becomes that of enhancing the reader’s understanding of the lyric contexts in which Théophile’s scatological offerings situate themselves. Structurally, the reader sees how the poet’s libertine ceuvre is just that — an integrated work in which the various components correspond to one another to set forth a number of approaches from which the texts are to be read. These points of view are not always consistent, and Théophile cannot be thought of as writing in a sequential manner along the lines of devotional Baroque poets such as Jean de La Ceppède and Jean de Sponde. However, there is a tendency not to read these poems in their vulgar totality, and to overlook the formal and substantive unity in this category of Théophile’s work. The poet’s resistance to poetic and cultural standards takes a profane, if not pornographic form because it seeks to disgust and arouse while denigrating the self, the lyric other, and the reader. Théophile’s pornography makes no distinction between the erotic and scatological. The poet conflates sex and shit because they present a double form of protest to artistic and social decency while titillating and attacking the reader’s sensibilities. Examination of the repugnant gives way to a cathartic experience which yields an understanding of, if not ironic delight in, one’s own filthy nature.

Stuart Hall é um dos poucos autores contemporâneos que ainda se apóia no conceito de ideologia. Ela interfere na língua falada definindo limites, regulando a forma discursiva com a intenção de estabilizá-la e congelá-la. Ela domina o bloco histórico e a estratégia seria a de unir as camadas populares, a partir de dentro, para que estas possam fortificar-se e combatê-la. Mas todo esse esquema tem sabor nostálgico, como se houvesse uma manobra dos poderosos e os dominados não se identificassem com os signos de poder e prestígio. Como no caso da “leitura crítica”, não seria o caso de modernizar Stuart Hall?

All’ascolto dell’incompiuto Matrimonio di Musorgskij, Borodin aveva sentenziato lapidariamente: «une chose manquée». Uguale commento viene riservato tuttora alla produzione operistica di Sergej Rachmaninov. In questo caso però non ci troviamo di fronte a un teatro rivoluzionario che si trova costretto a fare un passo indietro rispetto ai principi programmatici di cui si vuol far portatore, bensì a un potenziale inespresso, a un profilo drammaturgico mai giunto a piena maturazione. L’evidente eterogeneità della produzione operistica lasciataci in eredità dal compositore non permette infatti di determinarne con chiarezza le ‘linee guida’ e ne rende problematica la collocazione nel contesto musicale a lui coevo. Scopo della presente dissertazione è indagare l’apprendistato e il debutto operistico del compositore russo attraverso l’analisi di materiale documentario, testi letterari, partiture nonché delle fonti critiche in lingua russa, difficilmente accessibili per lo studioso italiano. Il cuore dell’elaborato è un’analisi dettagliata di Aleko, un atto unico presentato nel 1892 dal compositore come prova finale al corso di ‘Libera composizione’ del Conservatorio di Mosca. L’opera viene considerata nel suo complesso come organismo drammatico-musicale autonomo (rapporto fonte/libretto, articolazione interna, sistema delle forme, costellazione dei personaggi, distribuzione delle voci, ecc.), ma inquadrata al contempo nel più ampio contesto del teatro musicale coevo (recezione critica sia da parte della pubblicistica coeva sia da parte della storiografia musicale). Viene fornita in appendice un’edizione del libretto con traduzione a fronte. Incorniciano l’analisi dell’opera un capitolo in cui si offre una rilettura estetica del ‘caso Rachmaninov’ e un aperçu sulla produzione operistica matura del compositore, alla luce delle riflessioni proposte nel corso della dissertazione.

Gli Atti di Andrea e Bartolomeo sono un testo cristiano apocrifo, probabilmente ascrivibile al V secolo d.C. e collocabile in àmbito egizio. Tale testo è tramandato in greco, copto, arabo ed etiopico e il presente lavoro consiste nell’edizione critica della versione greca, sinora inedita. La storia narra l’evangelizzazione della Partia per opera degli apostoli Andrea e Bartolomeo e di un antropofago dalle sembianze mostruose (Cristomeo/ Cristiano), convertito al cristianesimo e divenuto instrumentum fidei.

Taking into account empirical evidence and theoretical considerations, a group of methodologists, researchers, and editors developed the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) recommendations to improve the quality of reporting of observational studies.The STROBE Statement consists of a checklist of 22 items, which relate to the title, abstract, introduction, methods, results and discussion sections of articles. Eighteen items are common to cohort studies, case-control studies and cross-sectional studies and four are specific to each of the three study designs. The STROBE Statement provides guidance to authors about how to improve the reporting of observational studies and facilitates critical appraisal and interpretation of studies by reviewers, journal editors and readers.This explanatory and elaboration document is intended to enhance the use, understanding, and dissemination of the STROBE Statement. The meaning and rationale for each checklist item are presented. This paper discusses the manuscript transmission of Chrétien’s Roman de Perceval ou le Conte du Graal and Wolfram’s Parzival in terms of their textual tradition and editorial criticism. It shows that the most recent edition of the Old French Perceval (K. Busby 1993) can be viewed as a landmark of the art of conventional editing that appeared at the peak of the discussion of ‘New Philology’ and took its own position in this context. At the same time, the Perceval was subject of critical studies based on the principle of ‘unrooted trees’ that questioned the genealogical concept of traditional ‘Lachmannian’ stemmatology. Conversely, a new edition of Wolfram’s Parzival, based on all known manuscripts, remained a desideratum for decades in German studies. Specific research on the textual tradition played a rather marginal role for a long time, but has been reinforced in the recent years in the context of a new critical edition presenting the totality of manuscripts as well as different textual versions in electronic form. The concept of ‘unrooted trees’ visualizing relationships of manuscript readings can be integrated in this concept. The article gives an overview of these methods, presents examples of editorial techniques, and develops ideas on how to combine the research on the manuscript tradition of both the German text and its French counterpart.

Alexander von Humboldt veröffentlichte rund 800 Aufsätze, Artikel und Essays in zahlreichen Wissensgebieten und diversen Sprachen. Die Verteilung ihrer Publikati-onsorte entspricht der Reichweite seiner Reisen und der globalen Perspektive seiner Forschungen. Die Vielfalt seiner Co-Autoren und Kooperationspartner spiegelt seine Multidisziplinarität. Humboldts umfangreiches publizistisches Werk dokumentiert sei-ne internationale Bedeutung als Wissenschaftler, Reiseschriftsteller und Kulturver-mittler. An der Universität Bern entsteht die erste Gesamtedition dieses Humboldt-schen Œuvres, die 2019 zum 250. Geburtstag des Autors vorliegen soll. Ihr Ziel ist Systematisierung, Dokumentation und Erschließung des Corpus – in einer Buchausgabe mit Text- und Apparatbänden und in einer digitalen Edition mit computerphilo-logischen Werkzeugen.
