A study to identify the motivation compelling the business traveler to choose a specific airline in the Miami to Atlanta market and to develop a marketing strategy

The purpose of this study was to determine if the business traveler's behavior is influenced by brand loyalty. This brand loyalty, which became evident through the use of a survey, was then to be thoroughly evaluated. In order for this information to be best understood and utilized as the basis of future marketing strategies, much research was undertaken and its significance explained in relation to the airline industry as it exists at present. The results and conclusions of this study indicate that the airline industry is, for the most part, taking a successful approach in attracting business travelers. These travelers' business is highly valued due to the frequency with which they pay full-fare rates. The airlines view business travelers as a potential for great profit and their actions are in line with these philosophies.

Diagnóstico e melhoria da eficiência energética da empresa Atlanta Steps

Inserida no setor do calçado, a Atlanta Steps é uma empresa que dedica a sua atividade maioritariamente à produção de solas para calçado. No decorrer da sua atividade produtiva existe potência calorífica libertada pelas máquinas que é necessário retirar para o exterior. Para o efeito, a empresa dispõe de um sistema de refrigeração das máquinas que opera de forma pouco eficiente, sobretudo em dias típicos de verão. É objetivo da presente dissertação efetuar um diagnóstico energético ao sistema de refrigeração da empresa por forma a avaliar: a potência calorifica libertada por cada máquina, a potência de refrigeração instalada, e o padrão de utilização de cada máquina, entre outros fatores. Com base no diagnóstico realizado são apresentadas propostas de melhoria que visam aumentar a eficiência energética do sistema e diminuir custos associados à refrigeração das máquinas, bem como melhorar a qualidade dos produtos da Atlanta Steps.

On and off the stage at Atlanta Greek Picnic: Performances of collective black middle-class identities and the politics of belonging

This dissertation presents a thick ethnography that engages in the micro-analysis of the situationality of black middle-class collective identification processes through an examination of performances by members of the nine historically black sororities and fraternities at Atlanta Greek Picnic, an annual festival that occurs at the beginning of June in Atlanta, Georgia. It mainly attracts undergraduate and graduate members of these university-based organizations, as they exist all over the United States. This exploration of black Greek-letter organization (BGLO) performances uncovers processes through which young black middle-class individuals attempt to combine two universes that are at first glance in complete opposition to each other: the domain of the traditional black middle-class values with representations and fashions stemming from black popular culture. These constructions also attempt to incorporate—in a contradiction of sorts— black popular cultural elements in the objective to deconstruct the social conservatism that characterizes middle-class values, particularly in relation to sexuality and its representation in social behaviors and performances. This negotiation between prescribed v middle-class values of respectability and black popular culture provides a space wherein black individuals challenge and/or perpetuate those dominant tropes through identity performances that feed into the formation of black sexual politics, which I examine through a variety of BGLO staged and non-staged performances. ^

Egg Quality of Tegal Ducks in Intensive Keeping Feed with Different Levels of Methionine and Lancang (Atlanta sp.)

The purpose of this research is to study the effect of combination levels of methionine-lancang (Atlanta sp.) in diet on egg quality of Tegal ducks. Eighty-one Tegal ducks early production period were used in this research. The treatments were arranged in a factorial (3x3). The first factor was level of synthetic methionine supplement (M) comprised of  m1: 0,00%, m2: 0,05%, and m3: 0,10%. The second factor was level of lancang (L), i.e. l1: 0,0%, l2; 2,0%, and l3: 4,0%. The variables observed were eggshell-thickness, haugh unit, and egg index. The result showed that the average eggshell-thickness was 0,335 ± 0,002 mm, range between 0,317 to 0,337 mm. The average of haugh unit was 92,054 ± 2,906 range between 85,767 to 99,095, and average of egg index was 76,58 ± 2,91, range between 73,79-81,37%. The interaction of methionine-lancang did not have significant effect on eggshell thickness, haugh unit, and egg index during the first two months egg production. Level of methionine significantly different (P<0,05) the haugh unit, but did not affect eggshell thickness and egg index. Level of  lancang has affect (P<0,05) eggshell thickness significant, but did not significant affect the haugh unit, and egg index. It can be concluded that increasing of synthetic methionine in the diet until 0,10% can improve haugh unit, and increase of lancang until 4,0% can improve eggshell thickness. Theory and its role in mathematics education

The increased recognition of the theory in mathematics education is evident in numerous handbooks, journal articles, and other publications. For example, Silver and Herbst (2007) examined ―Theory in Mathematics Education Scholarship‖ in the Second Handbook of Research on Mathematics Teaching and Learning (Lester, 2007) while Cobb (2007) addressed ―Putting Philosophy to Work: Coping with Multiple Theoretical Perspectives‖ in the same handbook. And a central component of both the first and second editions of the Handbook of International Research in Mathematics Education (English, 2002; 2008) was ―advances in theory development.‖ Needless to say, the comprehensive second edition of the Handbook of Educational Psychology (Alexander & Winne, 2006) abounds with analyses of theoretical developments across a variety of disciplines and contexts. Numerous definitions of ―theory‖ appear in the literature (e.g., see Silver & Herbst, in Lester, 2007). It is not our intention to provide a ―one-size-fits-all‖ definition of theory per se as applied to our discipline; rather we consider multiple perspectives on theory and its many roles in improving the teaching and learning of mathematics in varied contexts.

A new family of Marx generator based on resonant converter

This paper presents a novel topology to generate high voltage with utilization of slow and fast power switches. New concepts used in this topology include numbers of diode-capacitor units in parallel with resonant circuits which are connected to a positive buck-boost converter. The resonant circuit reverses the voltage polarity of the capacitors. This configuration has capability of generating a flexible high voltage with certain number of capacitors. The advantage of this topology is to use slow switches, less number of diodes and capacitors compare to Marx generator. Simulations have been performed to verify the proposed topology.

Women are people too : the problem of designing for gender

Cultural theory breaks with Modern analysis by rejecting traditional notions of race, gender, class and sexuality. In doing so, alternative frameworks such as Post-Feminism emerge which are useful for thinking about culture, technology and what our interactions with it mean. From a Post-Feminist perspective it can be seen how in our multi-cultural, post-industrial, digitized world, there is space to move beyond traditional ways of dividing up society such as ‘male’ and ‘female’. We are then free to re-construct our identity in light of a rich diversity of individually relevant experiences. Therefore, in order to get a better understanding of the highly nuanced cultural interactions that characterize our use of technology, this paper argues against using the inherently stereotyped lens of gender and allowing a new set of user needs to emerge.

The pitfalls of publicizing ethics research

What happens to our research once it hits the popular media? Do marketers know how to promote our research in a way that is understandable and complete, while still capturing an audience? This case study follows the dissemination of the results of a consumer ethics study via a single press release, along with the resulting media coverage, interviews and audience comments. Perhaps in their quest for a touch of controversy, the story picked up by the popular press was not the one intended by the authors. If getting the public story right is important, marketing academics need to spend as much time carefully crafting their press releases as they do writing journal manuscripts – they may not be able to rely on the ethics of media sub-editors who choose controversial headlines.

A new family of Marx generators based on commutation circuits

This paper presents a novel topology for the generation of high voltage pulses that uses both slow and fast solid-state power switches. This topology includes diode-capacitor units in parallel with commutation circuits connected to a positive buck-boost converter. This enables the generation of a range of high output voltages with a given number of capacitors. The advantages of this topology are the use of slow switches and a reduced number of diodes in comparison with conventional Marx generator. Simulations performed for single and repetitive pulse generation and experimental tests of a prototype hardware verify the proposed topology.

Online geographic information systems for improving health planning practice : lessons learned from the case study of Logan-Beaudesert, Australia

This study examines the impact of utilising a Decision Support System (DSS) in a practical health planning study. Specifically, it presents a real-world case of a community-based initiative aiming to improve overall public health outcomes. Previous studies have emphasised that because of a lack of effective information, systems and an absence of frameworks for making informed decisions in health planning, it has become imperative to develop innovative approaches and methods in health planning practice. Online Geographical Information Systems (GIS) has been suggested as one of the innovative methods that will inform decision-makers and improve the overall health planning process. However, a number of gaps in knowledge have been identified within health planning practice: lack of methods to develop these tools in a collaborative manner; lack of capacity to use the GIS application among health decision-makers perspectives, and lack of understanding about the potential impact of such systems on users. This study addresses the abovementioned gaps and introduces an online GIS-based Health Decision Support System (HDSS), which has been developed to improve collaborative health planning in the Logan-Beaudesert region of Queensland, Australia. The study demonstrates a participatory and iterative approach undertaken to design and develop the HDSS. It then explores the perceived user satisfaction and impact of the tool on a selected group of health decision makers. Finally, it illustrates how decision-making processes have changed since its implementation. The overall findings suggest that the online GIS-based HDSS is an effective tool, which has the potential to play an important role in the future in terms of improving local community health planning practice. However, the findings also indicate that decision-making processes are not merely informed by using the HDSS tool. Instead, they seem to enhance the overall sense of collaboration in health planning practice. Thus, to support the Healthy Cities approach, communities will need to encourage decision-making based on the use of evidence, participation and consensus, which subsequently transfers into informed actions.

Staying in touch and crafting mementoes

Designers of systems that attempt to support people in maintaining social connectedness should pay attention to the physical interaction characteristics of the systems they create. Systems today mostly accept the dominant computer interface configuration of screens, keyboards and mice, which are not always a good fit for settings outside the office, such as the home. We argue by reference to two design exemplars for a design philosophy that engages a broader range of people's abilities for skilled physical action when designing for social connectedness.

Australia and its impact fees

Australia is a country, which has much of its legislative roots in its Commonwealth heritage. However due to its size and nature, its planning and development processes are more aligned to countries such as the United States. This paper will present an overview of the Australian urban land market, its infrastructure funding mechanisms (property taxes) and current provisions in each of Australia’s seven States and Territories that provide for developer contributions for local infrastructure (impact fees).

Pt/SnO2 nanowires/SiC based hydrogen gas sensor

Pt/SnO2 nanowires/SiC based metal-oxidesemiconductor (MOS) devices were fabricated and tested for their gas sensitivity towards hydrogen. Tin oxide (SnO2) nanowires were grown on SiC substrates by the vapour liquid solid growth process. The material properties of the SnO2 nanowires such as its formation and dimensions were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The currentvoltage (I-V) characteristics at different hydrogen concentrations are presented. The effective change in the barrier height for 0.06 and 1% hydrogen were found to be 20.78 and 131.59 meV, respectively. A voltage shift of 310 mV at 530°C for 1% hydrogen was measured.

A multi-layered approach for site detection in UAS emergency landing scenarios using geometry-based image segmentation

This paper presents an alternative approach to image segmentation by using the spatial distribution of edge pixels as opposed to pixel intensities. The segmentation is achieved by a multi-layered approach and is intended to find suitable landing areas for an aircraft emergency landing. We combine standard techniques (edge detectors) with novel developed algorithms (line expansion and geometry test) to design an original segmentation algorithm. Our approach removes the dependency on environmental factors that traditionally influence lighting conditions, which in turn have negative impact on pixel-based segmentation techniques. We present test outcomes on realistic visual data collected from an aircraft, reporting on preliminary feedback about the performance of the detection. We demonstrate consistent performances over 97% detection rate.
