Total oxidation of chlorinated aromatics on supported manganese oxide catalysts was investigated. The catalysts have been prepared by wet impregnation method and characterized by XRD and TPR. Among the catalysts with the supports of TiO(2), Al(2)O(3) and SiO(2), titania supported catalyst (MnO(x)/TiO(2)) gives the highest catalytic activity. MnO(x)/TiO(2) (Mn loading, 1.9 wt.%) shows the total oxidation of chlorobenzene at about 400 degreesC. The activity can be stable for over 82 h except for the first few hours. At lower Mn loadings for MnO(x)/TiO(2), only one reduction peak appears at about 400 degreesC due to the highly dispersed manganese oxide. With the increase of Mn loading, another reduction peak emerges at about 500 degreesC, which is close to the reduction peak of bulk Mn(2)O(3) at 520 degreesC. TPR of the used catalyst is totally different from that of the fresh one indicating that the chemical state of the active species is changed during the chlorobenzene oxidation. The characterization studies of MnO(x)/TiO(2) showed that the highly dispersed MnO(x) is the precursor of the active phase, which can be converted into the active phase, mainly oxychlorinated manganese (MnO(y)Cl(z)), under working conditions of chlorobenzene oxidation. High-throughput screening of HZSM-5 supported metal-oxides catalysts were carried out for the coupling reaction of methane with CO to aromatics in a multi-stream reactor system. Zn/HZSM-5 and Mo/HZSM-5 were observed to be rather effective for the catalytic formation of aromatics from the coupling reaction of methane with CO. Temperature-programmed reaction has further proven the efficiency of the coupling of methane and CO over Zn/HZSM-5 catalyst. The results were also validated in a conventional fixed-bed reactor coupled with GC. The results propose that the coupling methane with CO toward benzene and naphthalene can be catalyzed by Zn/HZSM-5 at 500 ° C. Both methane and CO are needed for the formation of reactive coke on the catalyst, and the reactive coke may be the initial product in the producing of hydrocarbons. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. A single-pass process with the combination of oxidative coupling (OCM) and dehydro-aromatization (MDA) for the direct conversion of methane is carried out. With the assistance of the OCM reaction over the SrO-La2O3/CaO catalyst loaded on top of the catalyst bed, the duration of the dehydro-aromatization reaction catalyzed by a 6Mo/HMCM-49 catalyst shows a significant improvement, and. the initial deactivation rate constant of the overall process revealed about 1.5 x 10(-6) s(-1). Up to 72 h on stream, the yield of aromatics was still maintained at 5.0% with a methane conversion of 9.6%, which is obviously higher than that reported for the conventional MDA process with single catalyst. Upon the TPR results, this wonderful enhancement would be attributed to an in-situ formation of CO2 and H2O through the OCM reaction, which serves as a scavenger for actively removing the coke formed during the MDA reaction via a reverse Boudouard reaction and the water gas reaction as well.

Chapter 1 of this thesis is a brief introduction to the preparation and reactions of α-diazocarbonyl compounds, with particular emphasis on the areas relating to the research undertaken: C-H insertion, addition to aromatics, and oxonium ylide generation and rearrangement. A short summary of catalyst development illustrates the importance of rhodium(II)carboxylates for α-diazocarbonyl decomposition. Chapter 2 describes intramolecular C-H insertion reactions of α-diazo-β-keto sulphones to form substituted cyclopentanones. Rhodium(II) carboxylates derived from homochiral carboxylic acids were used as catalysts in these reactions and enantioselection achieved through their use is discussed. Chapter 3 describes intramolecular Buchner cyclisation of aryl diazoketones with emphasis on the stereochemical aspects of the cyclisation and subsequent reaction of the bicyclo[5.3.0]decatrienones produced. The partial asymmetric synthesis achieved through use of chiral rhodium(II) carboxylates as catalysts is discussed. The application of the intramolecular Buchner reaction to the synthesis of hydroazulene lactones is illustrated. Chapter 4 demonstrates oxonium ylide formation and rearrangement in the decomposition of an α-diazoketone. The consequences of the use of chiral rhodium(II) carboxylates as catalysts are described. Particularly significant was the discovery that rhodium(II) (S)-mandelate acts as a very efficient catalyst for α-diazoketone decompositions, in general. Moderate asymmetric induction was possible in the decomposition of α-diazoketones with chiral rhodium(II) carboxylates, with rhodium(II) (S)-mandelate being one of the more enantioselective catalysts investigated. However, the asymmetric induction obtained was very dependent on the exact structure of the α-diazoketone, the catalyst, and the nature of the reaction. Chapter 5 contains the experimental details, and the spectral and analytical data for all new compounds reported.

Heating 2,5-di-O-methanesulfonyl-1,4:3,6-dianhydro-D-sorbitol (1) in a range of solvents led to the formation of a gel state at low concentrations. 1 was found to gel aromatics, alcohols and water. The structure of 1 in the solid state was solved by single crystal X-ray crystallography; no strong hydrogen bonds or associated solvents were found in the crystal. Electron micrographs revealed the morphology of the gels to be predominantly rod-like. The ethanol alcogel was used to template silica by sol-gel transcription.

Liquid charge-transfer (CT) complexes were observed to form on contacting electron-rich aromatics with electron withdrawing group appended 1-alkyl-4-cyanopyridinium ionic liquids (ILs). Cooling below the melting point of the ionic liquid resulted in crystallisation of ionic liquid from the complex for 2-cyano and 3-cyano pyridinium isomers and in the formation of a 1 : 1 IL : aromatic crystalline CT-complex with the 4-cyanopyridinium isomer. The liquid structure of a 1 : 1 mixture of 1-methyl-4-cyanopyridinium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl} imide with 1-methylnaphthalene has been probed by neutron diffraction experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. A high degree of correlation between the experimental data and the simulations was found with a significant displacement of the anions from around the cation by the aromatic species and the resulting structure having pi-pi stacks between the cations and the aromatic.

Samples of Zn/H-ZSM-5 zeolite were prepared by impregnation of the parent zeolite with Zn(NO3)(2). The state of zinc in the samples was analyzed by XPS measurements, (ald the degree of reduction for the zinc oxide on the ZSM-5 zeolite surface in hydrogen atmosphere was determined, as well as the influence of this reducing treatment upon the activity and selectivity for aromatics of zeolites in aromatization of cyclohexane. It resulted that the degree of reduction depends on the concentration of zinc in the zeolite and is influenced by the presence of alumina binder. The results of the activity and selectivity to aromatics were correlated with the reduction of zinc oxide.

Growth and metabolism of fungi can be curtailed by chaotropic solutes and hydrophobic substances, both of which can weaken or inhibit non-covalent interactions within and between macromolecular systems. Here we explore the potential to utilize the fungistatic and fungicidal activities of such stressors as the basis for commercial formulations. A method was developed for the quantification of chaotropicity, which can be used for chemically diverse substances, in order elucidate roles of chaotropicity and hydrophobicity in microbial ecology (both of which are sufficiently potent to limit the Earth’s microbial biosphere). A large number of naturally occurring substances act as chaotropic or hydrophobic stressors including aliphatic alcohols, salts such as MgCl2, aromatics such as phenol, and hydrocarbons such as hexane and octene. We suggest that these stress parameters provide the (hitherto unidentified) modes-of-action for some extant antifungal products. The findings are discussed in relation to the development of a new generation of antifungals.

The hydrogenation of 4-phenyl-2-butanone over Pt/TiO2 and Pt/SiO2 catalysts has been performed in a range of solvents and it has been observed that the solvent impacted on the selectivity of ketone and aromatic ring hydrogenation as well as the overall TOF of the titania catalyst with no solvent effect on selectivity observed using the silica supported catalyst where ring hydrogenation was favored. For the titania catalyst, alkanes were found to favor ring hydrogenation whereas aromatics and alcohols led to carbonyl hydrogenation. A two-site catalyst model is proposed whereby the aromatic ring hydrogenation occurs over the metal sites while carbonyl hydrogenation is thought to occur predominantly at interfacial sites, with oxygen vacancies in the titania support activating the carbonyl. The effect of the solvent on the hydrogenation reaction over the titania catalyst was related to competition for the active sites between solvent and 4-phenyl-2-butanone.

Porous manganese oxide (OMS-2) and platinum supported on OMS-2 catalysts have been shown to facilitate the hydrogenation of the nitro group on chloronitrobenzene to give chloroaniline with no dehalogenation. Complete conversion was obtained within 2 h at 25 [degree]C and, although the rate of reaction increased with increasing temperature up to 100 [degree]C, the selectivity to chloroaniline remained at 99.0%. Use of Pd/OMS-2 or Pt/Al2O3 resulted in significant dechlorination even at 25 [degree]C and 2 bar hydrogen pressure giving selectivity to chloroaniline of 34.5% and 77.8%, respectively, at complete conversion. This demonstrates the potential of using platinum group metal free catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of halogenated aromatics. Two pathways were observed for the analogous nitrobenzene hydrogenation depending on the catalyst used. The hydrogenation of nitrobenzene was found to follow a direct pathway to aniline and nitrosobenzene over Pd/OMS-2 in contrast to the OMS and Pt/OMS-2 catalysts which resulted in formation of nitrosobenzene, azoxybenzene and azobenzene/hydrazobenzene intermediates before complete conversion to aniline. These results indicate that for the Pt/OMS-2 the hydrogenation proceeds predominantly over the support with the metal acting to dissociate the hydrogen. In the case of the Pd/OMS-2 both the hydrogenation and the hydrogen adsorption occur on the metal sites.

The present study describes the surface properties and catalytic activities of ferrospinels containing Co, Ni and Cu prepared by the low temperature route. Various physico-chemical methods have been adopted to characterise the systems. The reactions carried out are the Friedel-Crafts benzoylation of aromatics and the cyclohexanol decomposition. We have attempted the sulphate modification of the ferrites and have studied the surface and catalytic properties of the sulphated analogues. The work is presented in six chapters, the last chapter giving the summary and conclusions of the results presented earlier. Our samples prove as potential catalysts for the benzoylation of aromatics , for which truly heterogeneous catalysts are rare. Again , the materials show remarkable dehydration/dehydrogenation activities during cyclohexanol decomposition. There is plenty of scope for research in this field, especially in the development of environmentally benign catalysts for acylation reactions.

The aim of catalysis research is to apply the catalyst successfully in economically important reactions in an environmentally friendly way. The present work focuses on the modification of structural and surface properties of ceria and ceria-zirconia catalysts by the incorporation of transition metals. The applications of these catalysts in industrially important reactions like ethylbenzene oxidation, alkylation of aromatics are also investigated.Sol-gel method is effective for the preparation of transition metal modified ceria and ceria-zirconia mixed oxide since it produces catalyst with highly dispersed incorporated metal. Unlike that of impregnation method plugging of pores is not prominent for sol-gel derived catalyst materials. This prevents loss of surface area on metal modification as evident for BET surface area measurements. The powder X-ray diffraction analysis confirms the cubic structure of transition metal modified ceria and ceria-zirconia catalysts. The thermal stability is evident from TGA/DTA analysis. DR UV-vis spectra provide information on the coordination environment of the incorporated metal. EPR analysis ofCr, Mn and Cu modified ceria and a ceria-zirconia catalyst reveals the presence of different oxidation states of incorporated metal.Temperature programmed desorption of ammonia and thermogravimetric desorption of 2,6-dimethyl pyridine confirms the enhancement of acidity on metal incorporation. High a-methyl styrene selectivity in cumene cracking reaction implies the presence of comparatively more number of Lewis acid sites with some amount of Bronsted acid sites. The formation of cyclohexanone during cyclohexanol decomposition confirms the presence of basic sites on the catalyst surface.Mn and Cr modified catalysts show better activity towards ethylbenzene oxidation. A redox mechanism through oxometal pathway is suggested. All the catalysts were found to be active towards benzylation of toluene and a-xylene. The selectivity towards monoalkylated products remains almost 100%. The catalytic activity is correlated with the Lewis acidity of the prepared systems. The activity of the catalysts towards methylation of phenols depends on the strength acid sites as well as the redox properties of the catalysts. A strong dependence of methylation activity on the total acidity is illustrated.
