Stabilized nano-sized water droplet carrying water-soluble Co2+ species is employed as a new catalyst system for the oxidation of the alkyl aromatics in the presence of a fluorinated surfactant. This stable system contains no labile C-H structure and can facilitate excellent mixing of catalytic Co(II)/NaBr species, hydrocarbon substrates and oxygen in supercritical carbon dioxide fluid, which is demonstrated to be an excellent alternative solvent system to acetic acid or nitric acid for air oxidation of a number of alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons using Co(II) species at mild conditions. As a result, potential advantages of this 'greener' catalytic method including safer operation, easier separation and purification, higher catalytic activity with selectivity and without using corrosive or oxidation unstable solvent are therefore envisaged.

Here we present the catalytic hydrogenation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to less toxic mixtures of saturated and partial unsaturated polycyclic hydrocarbons under mild reaction conditions using a magnetically recoverable rhodium catalyst and molecular hydrogen as the exclusive H source. The catalyst is easily recovered after each reaction by placing a permanent magnet on the reactor wall and it can be reused in successive runs without any significant loss of catalytic activity. As an example, anthracene was totally converted into the saturated polycyclic hydrocarbon form (ca. 60%) and the partially hydrogenated form, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydroanthracene (ca. 40%). The catalyst operates in a broad range of temperature and H(2) pressure in both organic and aqueous/organic solutions of anthracene and it also exhibits significant activity at low substrate concentrations (20 ppm). This can be an efficient recycling process for hydrogenation of PAHs present in contaminated fluid waste streams. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work deals with the covalent functionalization of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with phenosafranine (PS) and Nile Blue (NB) dyes. These dyes can act as photosensitizers in energy and electron transfer reactions, with a potential to be applied in photodynamic therapy. Several changes in the characteristic Raman vibrational features of the dyes suggest that a covalent modification of the nanotubes with the organic dyes occurs. Specifically, the vibrational modes assigned to the NH(2) moieties of the dyes are seen to disappear in the SWNT-dye nanocomposites, corroborating the bond formation between amine groups in the dyes and carboxyl groups in the oxidized nanotubes. The X-ray absorption (XANES) data also show, that the intense band at 398.6 eV attributed to 1s -> 2p pi* transition of the nitrogen of the aromatic PS ring, is shifted due to the bonding with the carbonic structure of the SWNTs. The cytotoxicity data of dyes-modified SWNT composites in the presence and absence of light shows that the SWNT-NB (4 mu g/mL) composite presents a good photodynamic effect, namely a low toxicity in the dark, higher toxicity in the presence of light and also a reduced dye photobleaching by auto-oxidation. A high performance liquid chromatography ( HPLC) method with electrochemical detection (ED) was developed for the determination of benzidine, 3,3-dimethylbenzidine, o-toluidine and 3,3-dichlorobenzidine in the wastewater of the textile industry. The aromatic amines were eluted on a reversed phase column Shimadzu Shimpack C-18 using acetonitrile + ammonium acetate (1 x 10(-4) mol L-1) at a ratio 46: 54 v/v as mobile phase, pumped at a flow rate of 1.0 mL min(-1). The electrochemical oxidation of the aromatic amines exhibits well-defined peaks at a potential range of +0.45 to +0.78 V on a glassy carbon electrode. Optimum working potentials for amperometric detection were from 0.70 V to +1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Analytical curves for all the aromatic amines studied using the best experimental conditions present linear relationship from 1 x 10(-8) mol L-1 to 1.5 x 10(-5) mol L-1, r = 0.99965, n = 15. Detection limits of 4.5 nM (benzidine), 1.94 nM (o-toluidine), 7.69 nM (3,3-dimethylbenzidine), and 5.15 nM (3,3-dichlorobenzidine) were achieved, respectively. The detection limits were around 10 times lower than that verified for HPLC with ultra violet detection. The applicability of the method was demonstrated by the determination of benzidine in wastewater from the textile industry dealing with an azo dye processing plant.
Electrochemical oxidation of wastewater containing aromatic amines using a flow electrolytic reactor
Resumo:
Aromatic amines are environmental pollutants and represent one of the most important classes of industrial and natural chemicals. Some types of complex effluents containing these chemical species, mainly those originated from chemicals plants are not fully efficiently treated by conventional processes. In this work, the use of electrochemical technology through an electrolytic pilot scale flow reactor is considered for treatment of wastewater of a chemical industry manufacturer of antioxidant and anti-ozonant substances used in rubber. Experimental results showed that was possible to remove between 65% and 95% of apparent colour and chemical oxygen demand removal between 30 and 90% in 60 min of treatment, with energy consumption rate from 26 kWh m-3 to 31 kWh m-3. Absorbance, total organic carbon and toxicity analyses resulted in no formation of toxic by-products. The results suggest that the presented electrochemical process is a suitable method for treating this type of wastewater, mainly when pre-treated by aeration. This work addresses the synthesis of carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) by up-cycling common solid wastes. These feedstocks could supersede the use of costly and often toxic or highly flammable chemicals, such as hydrocarbon gases, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen, which are commonly used as feedstocks in current nanomanufacturing processes for CNMs. Agricultural sugar cane bagasse and corn residues, scrap tire chips, and postconsumer polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle shreddings were either thermally treated by sole pyrolysis or by sequential pyrolysis and partial oxidation. The resulting gaseous carbon-bearing effluents were then channeled into a heated reactor. CNMs, including carbon nanotubes, were catalytically synthesized therein on stainless steel meshes. This work revealed that the structure of the resulting CNMs is determined by the feedstock type, through the disparate mixtures of carbon-bearing gases generated when different feedstocks are pyrolyzed. CNM characterization was conducted by scanning and transmission electron microscopy as well as by Raman spectroscopy and by thermogravimetric analysis. Gas chromatography was used to characterize the gases in the synthesis chamber. This work demonstrated an alternative method for efficient manufacturing of CNMs using both biodegradable and nonbiodegradable agricultural and municipal carbonaceous wastes.
Abundant and Stable Char Residues in Soils: Implications for Soil Fertility and Carbon Sequestration
Resumo:
Large-scale soil application of biochar may enhance soil fertility, increasing crop production for the growing human population, while also sequestering atmospheric carbon. But reaching these beneficial outcomes requires an understanding of the relationships among biochar's structure, stability, and contribution to soil fertility. Using quantitative C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, we show that Terra Preta soils (fertile anthropogenic dark earths in Amazonia that were enriched with char >800 years ago) consist predominantly of char residues composed of similar to 6 fused aromatic rings substituted by COO- groups that significantly increase the soils' cation-exchange capacity and thus the retention of plant nutrients. We also show that highly productive, grassland-derived soils in the U.S, (Mollisols) contain char (generated by presettlement fires) that is structurally comparable to char in the Terra Preta soils and much more abundant than previously thought (similar to 40-50% of organic C). Our findings indicate that these oxidized char residues represent a particularly stable, abundant, and fertility-enhancing form of soil organic matter.

In this dissertation the pyrolytic conversion of biomass into chemicals and fuels was investigated from the analytical point of view. The study was focused on the liquid (bio-oil) and solid (char) fractions obtainable from biomass pyrolysis. The drawbacks of Py-GC-MS described so far were partially solved by coupling different analytical configurations (Py-GC-MS, Py-GC-MIP-AED and off-line Py-SPE and Py-SPME-GC-MS with derivatization procedures). The application of different techniques allowed a satisfactory comparative analysis of pyrolysis products of different biomass and a high throughput screening on effect of 33 catalysts on biomass pyrolysis. As the results of the screening showed, the most interesting catalysts were those containing copper (able to reduce the high molecular weight fraction of bio-oil without large yield decrease) and H-ZSM-5 (able to entirely convert the bio-oil into “gasoline like” aromatic products). In order to establish the noxious compounds content of the liquid product, a clean-up step was included in the Py-SPE procedure. This allowed to investigate pollutants (PAHs) generation from pyrolysis and catalytic pyrolysis of biomass. In fact, bio-oil from non-catalytic pyrolysis of biomass showed a moderate PAHs content, while the use of H-ZSM-5 catalyst for bio-oil up-grading determined an astonishing high production of PAHs (if compared to what observed in alkanes cracking), indicating an important concern in the substitution fossil fuel with bio-oil derived from biomass. Moreover, the analytical procedures developed in this thesis were directly applied for the detailed study of the most useful process scheme and up-grading route to chemical intermediates (anhydrosugars), transportation fuels or commodity chemicals (aromatic hydrocarbons). In the applied study, poplar and microalgae biomass were investigated and overall GHGs balance of pyrolysis of agricultural residues in Ravenna province was performed. A special attention was put on the comparison of the effect of bio-char different use (fuel or as soil conditioner) on the soil health and GHGs emissions.

The common ground of this study is the development of novel synthetic strategies to extended one-, two- and three-dimensional aromate-rich systems for which a number of applications are envisaged. rnThe point of departure is the synthesis and characterization of highly symmetric macrocyclic PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) for which various aspects of supramolecular chemistry will be investigated. The versatility of the Yamamoto macrocyclization will be demonstrated on the basis of a set of cyclic trimers that exhibit a rich supramolecular chemistry. 1,10-phenanthroline, triphenylene and ortho-terphenyl building blocks have been successfully assembled to the corresponding macrocycles following the newly developed synthetic route. Scanning-tunneling microscopy (STM) and two-dimensional wide-angle X-ray scattering (2D-WAXS) were used to study the two- and three-dimensional self-assembly, respectively.rnSecondly, the development of chemical approaches to highly shape-anisotropic graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and related nanographene molecules shall be discussed. Aryl-aryl coupling was used for the bottom-up fabrication of dendronized monomers, polymers and model compounds. Subsequently, these structures were converted into the final graphene material using oxidative (Scholl-type) cyclodehydrogenation. The GNRs thus obtained are characterized by an unprecedented length and lateral extension. The relevance of structural tailoring in the field of well-defined graphene materials is discussed in detail as only the chemical approach provides full geometry control. rnLastly, novel pathways towards the synthesis of extended three-dimensional networks that are dominated by nitrogen-rich motifs will be presented. If porous, these materials hold a great potential in the fields of gas and energy storage as well as for applications in catalysis. Hence, poly(aminal) networks based on melamine as crosslinking unit were synthesized and characterized with respect to the applications mentioned above. As set of conjugated poly(azomethine) networks was investigated regarding their use as a novel class of organic semiconductors for photocatalytic water splitting. The network structures described in this chapter can also be subjected to a controlled pyrolysis yielding mesoporous, nitrogen-rich carbon materials that were evaluated as active component for supercapacitors.rn

29 parent- and alkyl-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 15 oxygenated-PAHs (OPAHs), 11 nitrated-PAHs (NPAHs) and 4 azaarenes (AZAs) in both the gaseous and particulate phases, as well as the particulate-bound carbon fractions (organic carbon, elemental carbon, char, and soot) in ambient air sampled in March and September 2012 from an urban site in Xi'an, central China were extracted and analyzed. The average concentrations (gaseous+particulate) of 29PAHs, 15OPAHs, 11NPAHs and 4AZAs were 1267.0±307.5, 113.8±46.1, 11.8±4.8 and 26.5±11.8ngm(-3) in March and 784.7±165.1, 67.2±9.8, 9.0±1.5 and 21.6±5.1ngm(-3) in September, respectively. Concentrations of 29PAHs, 15OPAHs and 11NPAHs in particulates were significantly correlated with those of the carbon fractions (OC, EC, char and soot). Both absorption into organic matter in particles and adsorption onto the surface of particles were important for PAHs and OPAHs in both sampling periods, with more absorption occurring in September, while absorption was always the most important process for NPAHs. The total carcinogenic risk of PAHs plus the NPAHs was higher in March. Gaseous compounds, which were not considered in most previous studies, contributed 29 to 44% of the total health risk in March and September, respectively.

Distribution and composition of lipids and contents of alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) in bottom sediments of the Scotia and Weddell seas are discussed. Comparatively low concentrations of organic carbon (average 0.35%) and lipids (average 0.024%) result from rapid decomposition of organic matter in upper layers of the water column. Composition of alkanes indicates that lipids are of autochthonous origin, and stable concentrations of PAHs (average 25.8 ppb, sigma 15.3 ppb) indicate that they represent the background level for bottom sediments. Higher concentrations of PAHs in sediments near the King George Island (252.1 ppb) and different distributions of individual polyarenes are produced there by the heating systems of the Polish Antarctic Station.

A series of C2-C8 hydrocarbons (including saturated, aromatic, and olefinic compounds) from deep-frozen core samples taken during DSDP Leg 75 (Holes 530A and 532) were analyzed by a combined hydrogen-stripping/thermovaporization method. Concentrations representing both hydrocarbons dissolved in the pore water and adsorbed on the mineral surfaces vary in Hole 530A from about 10 to 15,000 ng/g of dry sediment weight depending on the lithology (organic-carbon-lean calcareous oozes versus "black shales"). Likewise, the organic-carbon-normalized C2-C8 hydrocarbon concentrations vary from 3,500 to 93,100 ng/g Corg, reflecting drastic differences in the hydrogen contents and hence the hydrocarbon potential of the kerogens. The highest concentrations measured of nearly 10**5 ng/g Corg are about two orders of magnitude below those usually encountered in Type-II kerogen-bearing source beds in the main phase of petroleum generation. Therefore, it was concluded that Hole 530A sediments, even at 1100 m depth, are in an early stage of evolution. The corresponding data from Hole 532 indicated lower amounts (3,000-9,000 ng/g Corg), which is in accordance with the shallow burial depth and immaturity of these Pliocene/late Miocene sediments. Significant changes in the light hydrocarbon composition with depth were attributed either to changes in kerogen type or to maturity related effects. Redistribution pheonomena, possibly the result of diffusion, were recognized only sporadically in Hole 530A, where several organic-carbon lean samples were enriched by migrated gaseous hydrocarbons. The core samples from Hole 530A were found to be severely contaminated by large quantities of acetone, which is routinely used as a solvent during sampling procedures on board Glomar Challenger.
