Obesity markers and blood pressure in a sample of Portuguese children and adolescents.

Little information exists regarding the effect of several obesity markers on blood pressure (BP) levels in youth. Transverse study including 2494 boys and 2589 girls. Height, weight and waist were measured according to the international criteria and body fat (BF) by bioimpedance. BP was measured by an automated device. Hypertension was defined using sex-specific, age-specific and height-specific observation-points. Body mass index (BMI) and waist were positively related with systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and heart rate in both sexes, whereas the relationships with BF were less consistent. Stepwise linear regression analysis showed that BMI was positively related with SBP and DBP in both sexes, whereas BF was negatively related with SBP in both sexes and with heart rate in boys only; finally, waist was positively related with SBP in boys and heart rate in girls. Age and heart rate-adjusted values of SBP and DBP increased with BMI: for SBP, 117+/-1, 123+/-1 and 124+/-1 mmHg in normal, overweight and obese boys, respectively; corresponding values for girls were 111+/-1, 114+/-1 and 116+/-2 mmHg (mean+/-SE, P<0.001). Overweight and obese boys had an odds ratio for being hypertensive of 2.26 (95% confidence interval: 1.79-2.86) and 3.36 (2.32-4.87), respectively; corresponding values for girls were 1.58 (confidence interval 1.25-1.99) and 2.31 (1.53-3.50). BMI, not BF or waist, is consistently and independently related to BP levels in children; overweight and obesity considerably increase the risk of hypertension.

Aidez-moi les jeunes, s'il vous plaît ! Réflexion sur les défis d'une recherche empirique en milieu scolaire

Le but de mes recherches est d’analyser le droit quotidien à l’école secondaire. Quand j’utilise le mot « droit », je l’interprète au sens large reflétant la conception du droit associé au pluralisme juridique critique. En d’autres termes, je reconnais le droit (ou la normativité juridique) comme phénomène dynamique et hétérogène composé des aspects tant latents que manifestes dont l’individu constitue le site irréductible. De plus, j’ai choisi le titre « Aidez-moi les jeunes, s’il vous plait! » afin de souligner le rôle essentiel des jeunes, tant par rapport à mon approche méthodologique qu’à ma démarche théorique. Ainsi, je conçois les jeunes comme des acteurs juridiques qui créent les normes juridiques au cours de leurs interactions de tous les jours à l’école et je reconnais leur apport indispensable comme participants au développement de ma recherche elle-même. Finalement, ma propre interaction en tant que chercheur chez les jeunes met en lumière l’aspect juridique de tout apprentissage ainsi que la dimension pédagogique du droit.

Spectral dependence of third order nonlinear optical susceptibility of zinc phthalocyanine

Wavelength dependence of saturable absorption (SA) and reverse saturable absorption (RSA) of zinc phthalocyanine was studied using 10 Hz, 8 ns pulses from a tunable laser, in the wavelength range of 520–686 nm, which includes the rising edge of the Q band in the electronic absorption spectrum. The nonlinear response is wavelength dependent and switching from RSA to SA has been observed as the excitation wavelength changes from the low absorption window region to higher absorption regime near the Q band. The SA again changes back to RSA when we further move over to the infrared region. Values of the imaginary part of third order susceptibility are calculated for various wavelengths in this range. This study is important in identifying the spectral range over which the nonlinear material acts as RSA based optical limiter.

Se consideran tanto los programas de mantenimiento de la lengua materna como los programas de enseñanza dentro del ámbito de la educación escolar bilingüe. Se señalan como importantes los aspectos motivacionales y actitudinales para la adquisición de segundas y terceras lenguas y, por tanto, deben tenerse en cuenta a la hora de elaborar la política lingüística para el sistema educativo, tanto desde el punto de vista metodológico como de los recursos humanos.
