ABSTRACT The research developed, which has led to the completion of this thesis, deal with the protection of buildings against entry of radon gas and its accumulation in the ocupated spaces. This gas (radon isotope Rn-222) is a radioactive element generated, mainly, in areas with high levels of radio (granitic terrain for example). Its high mobility allows entering in buildings through the enclosure materials of it (porosity of materials, cracks, crevices and joints) and accumulates inside, where it can be inhaled in high concentrations. The World Health Organization describes radon gas as a carcinogen agent in level 1. According to this Agency, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer behind tobacco. In response to this alarm, some states have developed regulations that propose solutions to reduce radon concentration levels for not exceeding the values recommended by international agencies responsible in radiation protection. In Spain there is still no legislation to protect against this carcinogen element that cause numerous deaths, and for that reason it is evident the need to provide technical documentation to help the national and local governments to develop legislation for reaching the European and international levels recommendations. As the main contribution of this work are the results of reducing radon concentration using different constructive solutions aimed to stop radon entry in buildings, with techniques and materials common in Spain. To do this, effectiveness of such solutions, have been studied in terms of its ability to stop radon entry in a housing prototype built for this purpose in an area with high radon levels. The solutions proposed and tested have been the result of a process of optimization of systems studied in the literature in order to adapt the techniques to Spanish building material and, specifically, to the actual situation of housing prototype built in a place with high contents of radon in soil. The work includes an initial chapter with the basic concepts needed to understand the problem of living in areas with high levels of radon.

Within the last century the interest in wind-induced loads over civil engineering structures has become more and more important, the reason being that the development of new construction techniques and materials has allowed engineers and architects to design new structures far from the traditional concepts, and in many cases wind actions over these singular structures are not included in the existing codes of practice. In this paper the windinduced static loads over bridges constructed by the double cantilever method during erection stages are considered. The aerodynamic load over a double cantilever bridge under a yawing-angled wind produces a yawing (torsional) moment on the bridge deck, which can lead to undesirable rotation of the deck about the supporting pier. The effects of the wind yaw angle and the length of the deck are analysed. The wind action caused by the presence of sliding concrete forms at the ends of the deck is also studied.

ABSTRACT The Spanish industrial architecture of tobacco is represented by two construction types that correspond to the two phases of tobacco production: the drying sheds (bioclimatic constructions where the drying process takes place) and factories (centres where tobacco is processed after the drying process). The factories were distributed throughout the Spanish territory, preferably occupying coastal locations, although some of them were located elsewhere following political reasons. Most of the buildings inside city centres have suffered changes in their use, becoming cultural, social or representative centres. This thesis attempts the analysis of the constructive systems employed in tobacco industrial architecture, from drying sheds to factories. The drying sheds are an example of bioclimatic industrial architecture. The factories are a typology that have successfully adapted to new uses. Industrial architecture uses a language that follows the advances in industrialization, anticipating new materials and structures, and merging the complex relationships established among products, human beings, space and locations. These buildings were promoted extensively in the country. They are characterized by technological architectural sociological and landscaping innovations. They are considered as important examples of the evolution and the implementation of construction techniques (building materials and structures). They are also considered as examples of innovation in the building typology, in their economic structure and in the technologies that they have applied. The settings in which the drying sheds are placed have an important influence in them. They cannot be considered as isolated elements. Instead, there is a close relationship between drying sheds and the surroundings in which they are located. Drying sheds’ hygrotermal and environmental conditions are analyzed in this thesis to compare them with the values of human comfort and find suitable relationships and parameters. All the drying sheds that have been analyzed are constructed with brick. This implies a consideration of “zero degree” for both the construction and the composition of the architectural process. The detailing - entails making all the accumulative processes explicit as the brick walls are left exposed. This minimal component allows a wide range of options that are never random but based on the logic of the way in which it is combined. The “sincerity” in the exposition of material, displaying them in their very nature and showing how they are really used, is a basic characteristic of industrial architecture, and it is even more expressive in these types of buildings. The walls of the drying sheds undergo a permeability assessment in order to determine the degree of ventilation and orientation, the lattice pattern used and the overall volume. This specific conditioning system can serve as a resource for other buildings, and consequently, it could be transferred to other uses within a two-pronged approach: -Climatically adapted architecture that takes into account the surroundings. -Architecture as a generator of specific climatic conditions indoors. Drying sheds’ main purposes / aims deal with how to provide shade, ventilation and a covered space as well as permeability. The industrial architecture must be recognized as historical valuable buildings due to its intrinsic and distinctive characteristics. Knowing the productive structure, allow us to make a proper analysis of these buildings, since the basic aim, is to understand the spatial organization indoors. Factories did not come close to the tobacco production, with the exception of Cádiz and Palazuelo, where there are sheds and tobacco croplands nearby. The main reason for this separation is that the process of obtaining tobacco has two processes: the primary process and the secondary process. In the primary process tobacco leaves are left to dry. In the secondary process, previously manufactured tobacco allocated in the factories where the weather conditions are not important. This fact determines that in the climate areas where this study tales place there are some cases in which we can find both factories and drying sheds, and others where there are either factories or drying sheds only. The location of these factories met various demands, being the most outstanding the ones related to geographic, strategic and political reasons. In most factories the choice of its location was often linked to the incoming of raw goods, mainly delivered through waterways –it is the case of Seville,) and by land, using railways. The location of the factories was linked to political reasons in only two cases Madrid and Logroño, which are the only ones that are not placed near the coast. The one in Madrid was built due to its political centrality and because geographically speaking, it was the reference landmark of means of land and rail transports. Many factories, in fact, were settled nearby rail stations. For the factory in Logroño, only political reasons were taken into consideration. I should like to close by undertaking a comparative study of factories in Seville, Madrid and San Sebastian. There are a number of reasons to substantiate this choice: -The factory in Seville was historically speaking the first that was built and the most important one. -The factory in Madrid was the most important one administratively. This factory was the headquarters as well as being, after Seville, the one which provided a model for other factories. -The factory in San Sebastian is the biggest in the North of Spain. The analysis carried out are related to the volume of the buildings and the surface areas of the courtyards, the surface of the roofs, the permeability of the walls and the openings of the façade, the orientation and the sun exposure, the indoor spatial distribution and organization and evolution of the uses (formerly and currently) I observe that in most of these factories there has been a change in the use of the buildings, from industrial cultural purposes. These buildings can be considered as adaptable infrastructures based on a combination of architectural practicability, sustainability and functionality.

The vast edified legacy composed of the historical adobe load-bearing walls which can be found spread all over the Iberian peninsula has, in the region of Aveiro (Portugal), its maximum expression, both from a quantitative point of view (around 30% of the local construction) and a typological point of view, including a considerable number of different types of constructions (residential buildings, military buildings, churches, industrial buildings, etc.), most of which have a recognized high historical, architectural and patrimonial value. The conservation and/or rehabilitation of many of these edifications has been neglected, since its gradual abandonment as constructive technique during the second half of the 20th century. As a consequence of this posture of general passivity, it is nowadays visible the state of pronounced damage manifested by great part of these constructions, which has been leading to their abandonment and state of ruin. In most cases, the option for demolition has been the solution found to face the actual state of these constructions. However, in recent years, a growing interest in the preservation and maintenance of the adobe constructions has become visible by the envolved parties, with the obvious consequence of rehabilitation. By so, it becomes mandatory to develop strategies of intervention that, through rehabilitation, are able to extend the useful life of the existing structures, allowing on one hand, to establish methodologies to analyze their safety state and determine the actions needed to ensure their protection against existing pressures and, when applicable, the occurrence of new demands due to changes of use or extensions, and on the other hand, to give response to the main damage mechanisms to which these structures are exposed. Because these structures were built using not very well know techniques and materials, which have been, in the meantime, abandoned, it is now crucial that these are object of a previous phase of study and multidisciplinary investigation, essential not only to their characterization and comprehension, but also to the diagnosis of the main pathological processes that affect them. In this context, the present study had as main goal to develop the analysis and knowledge regarding the properties and resistant parameters of the adobe masonry as well as bringing to the light of day the actual state of the existing adobe constructions, making evident the main damage mechanisms by which they are affected and analyzing, through their occurrence, the vulnerability of the mentioned properties and resistant parameters. By so, it was objective of the present study the development of a result database which on one hand, supports the execution of rehabilitation interventions and/or strengthening of these constructions and, on other hand, allows the development of improvement solutions in the mechanical characteristics of the adobe masonry which permit corrections of deficiencies in their structural behavior with a special emphasis on the influence of water. Thus, a database of results was developed. Its goal is, on one hand, to support the rehabilitation or consolidation interventions on these structures - allowing for a quick analysis of the safety state of the adobe walls from expedite data and calculus resources and, on the other hand, to study improvement or correction solutions of their structural behavior.

ABSTRACT This doctoral thesis has a constructive historical material approach to the reality of the fortifications built in the center of the Iberian Peninsula during the first centuries of the middle Ages. The geographical framework extends from the Duero´s riverbed, bounded by the valleys of its tributaries, the Duratón on the west, and the Escalote on the east, until to the peaks of the eastern Central System at its connection with the Iberian, to descend the hillside of the mountain range to the high valleys of Lozoya, Jarama and Henares. Following the current demarcations under this framework study, partially cover the provinces of Soria, Guadalajara, Madrid, Segovia, Burgos and Valladolid. From a chronological point of view, the temporal space began with the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula in 711 A.D and ends with the final incorporation into the Kingdom of Castile in the studied areas, around the year 1150 A.D. It is a transitional gathering point, both socially and ecologically. The southern territories of the Sierra or mountain range corresponded to the northern boundaries of the Middle mark of al- Andalus , while the northern missing, the extrema Durii , were a disorganized sparsely populated territory and point of the expansion of the kingdoms of Leon and Castile and zone of conflict with al- Andalus at the beginning of the tenth century. Such a wide and diverse territory, connected with a complex historical, social evolution and the lack of written sources , has required an approach with a mixed type methodology, which have converged the techniques of historical documentation of the archeology and building history. This methodology comes from a comprehensive bibliographic study, after which an archaeological survey was directed that allowed building a fortified elements ‘catalog in the study area likely to contain high medieval period phases were raised. On each of the elements located one metric data collection and constructive graphic type was performed. Checking against the data collected in each building with its own history of stratigraphy and construction techniques and finally, they were identified and isolated the timing analysis phases. Among the early medieval fortifications that showed high period Medieval phases and according to its uniqueness , representativeness and stratigraphy’s quality of the nine case studies : the fortified complex of Atienza, Cogolludo Castle, the Buitrago de Lozoya´s walled enclosure , the Caracena´s castle , the Mezquetillas´ parish church, the Gormaz´s fortress, the San Andres toser in Sepulveda, the church of San Miguel de Ayllón and the Alcolea de las Peñas´ rock fortress. This research study has served two main purposes. The first focuses on the material side. In this sense it does not only identified the presence or absence of early medieval period phases in each one of the building, which has allowed a territorial reading and the characterization of the different construction techniques and materials, but it also assess the possibility of establishing a chrono–typology. The second focuses on historical and social aspects. The bound of these materials remains with the historical documentation has become a means to know the history of the people who built these buildings, the motivation that led them to undertake such projects as well as the context in which each of these fortifications played the functions for which it was created. This study has revealed the breach that led to the state occupation of the Cordovan army in this area by since mid-tenth century, from the social point of view and also from the structural one. It has been materially document this occupation after the restoration of Medinaceli, around 946, and succeeded after taking Sepulveda by Almanzor in 984, clearly differentiating their own building techniques currently implemented directly by foreign workshops, from Cordova and Toledo. The stratigraphic position of these factories has made it possible to identify earlier and later construction phases at this time. It has also been able to verify the initial hypothesis in relation with constructive knowledge loss during late antiquity and early medieval centuries in the studied area. Also ashlar, masonries as well as the brick production is recovered without resorting to a local technological substrate, fleetingly brought about by the Caliphate occupation. When the dismemberment of the Caliphate is produced from the year 1010 these techniques were abandoned again. In the late eleventh and early twelfth century these techniques are recovered from Romanesque and a new change came, also from the establishment of the diocesan parish network. In one historical period that has been hardly exploited by research, this thesis seeks not only to establish a working methodology but lay the groundwork for future studies, both from the particular point of view, paying special attention in the constructive and stratigraphic studies of each of the evidence collected , and additionally in other more transversal aspects.

ABSTRACT The reality is being questioned, even going so far as to doubt its existence; real space is also questioned, but the human being experiences the natural and artificial spaces; and amongst the latter the architectural, within which includes the performance one, related to the show. This performance space has been transformed according to the shows that have been happening in history and will continue modifying. Nowadays, it coincides with environments not previously employed for the show, because it can occur anywhere. The scenographic space, which belongs to the performance, is projected and built with the rules of the scenography. It has been completed in different ways depending on the type of show and is related to the architectural space thanks to movement, because both be travelled through, physically or through the mediation of the creators of the shows; implying a classification of the scenographic space, according to this movement. A typology which refers to each kinetic scenographic space based on classifications established by categories is essential to analyze deeply and lay the foundations to study this space. Instruments are necessary in order to project and build the scenographic space. Some coincide with the architectural ones, but are generally different and specific according to different performances. The instruments are described and catalogued to be able to know how to use them and to devise those spaces. Architectural and performance spaces are created by the project and have different characteristics according to each discipline. The main objective of the scenographic space project is to serve fiction and generally modify and improve the performance, which also happens today with the architectural space. The construction of architectural space nowadays employs techniques and materials with which the scenographic space is also constructed. The kinetic scenographic space can also be built with its own techniques that are defined and classified, including new compositions of digital images. Two types of spaces emerge depending on where they are built and the role played by this construction in fiction, which are also discussed and defined. The purpose of scenography and architecture is the creation of spaces that have common characteristics. The scenographic space also has specific characteristics which don’t exist in the architectural one. Also the typologies, the instruments, the project and the construction differ between the two spaces. Reality has become performance, the performance is projected and is built with the laws and rules of scenography, and then architecture must know these laws and rules, because they serve to construct reality.

Electronic systems that use rugged lightweight plastics potentially offer attractive characteristics (low-cost processing, mechanical flexibility, large area coverage, etc.) that are not easily achieved with established silicon technologies. This paper summarizes work that demonstrates many of these characteristics in a realistic system: organic active matrix backplane circuits (256 transistors) for large (≈5 × 5-inch) mechanically flexible sheets of electronic paper, an emerging type of display. The success of this effort relies on new or improved processing techniques and materials for plastic electronics, including methods for (i) rubber stamping (microcontact printing) high-resolution (≈1 μm) circuits with low levels of defects and good registration over large areas, (ii) achieving low leakage with thin dielectrics deposited onto surfaces with relief, (iii) constructing high-performance organic transistors with bottom contact geometries, (iv) encapsulating these transistors, (v) depositing, in a repeatable way, organic semiconductors with uniform electrical characteristics over large areas, and (vi) low-temperature (≈100°C) annealing to increase the on/off ratios of the transistors and to improve the uniformity of their characteristics. The sophistication and flexibility of the patterning procedures, high level of integration on plastic substrates, large area coverage, and good performance of the transistors are all important features of this work. We successfully integrate these circuits with microencapsulated electrophoretic “inks” to form sheets of electronic paper.

This report summarizes the impact of Hurricane Allen (August 1980) on dune configuration, sand accretion or erosion, and changes in the vegetation on north Padre Island. Four experimental foredunes, the result of grass plantings from 1969 to 1973, and an unplanted control section were monitored in 1975-1977 and also in 1981. The 1981 posthurricane data were compared where possilbe, with the previous studies. Foredune elevation surveys were completed in March 1981; accompanying vegetation transects were made in July 1981. Hurrican Allen causes erosion of the dune face of all the experimental dunes, but caused a breach in only one dune. The beach elevations had returned to approximately prehurricane heights by the time the area was resurveyed. The unplanted control dune provided little resistance to waves generated by the storm and a large quantity of sand was deposited inland.

Orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) offer many advantages over the conventional oral dosage forms in terms of convenience and ease of use. Over the last decade, substantial advances in the formulation of ODTs have been achieved in academia and industry that resulted in the emerging of a large number of patents. The aim of this review is to summarise the most recent patents in ODT formulations and highlight their motivations, inventive steps and significances in the development of ODT formulations. Five major techniques have been applied in manufacturing of ODTs, namely conventional tablet press, moulding, freeze drying, tablet loading and pulverization, with majority of the patents dedicated to the use of conventional tablet pressing. The patents have addressed various issues concerning the manufacturing of robust and practical ODT formulations by disclosing new manufacturing techniques, advantageous materials, and innovative formulation steps. However, future developments are required to reduce the cost and widening the application of the new manufacturing techniques, while simplifying and shortening the formulation steps will be crucial in the well established ones.

A significant number of poly a-ester homologues of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) have been synthesized and used in miscibility studies together with conventional isomeric diacid-diol polyester variants, poly ß-esters (based on ß-hydroxybutyrate (HB) and ß-hydroxyvalerate (HV)), poly e-caprolactone (PCL), poly e-caprolactone copolymers (e.g. poly(L-lactide-co-caprolactone), and a series of cellulose-based polymers (e.g. cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB), cellulose acetate propionate (CAP)). A combinatorial approach to rapid miscibility screening using 96-well plates and a uv-visible multi-wavelength plate reader has been developed enabling the clarity of PLLA-based multi-component blend films to be observed. Using these techniques and materials, the ternary phase compatibility diagrams of a range of three-component blend films was prepared, illustrating ranges of behavior varying from miscible blends giving rise to clear films to immiscible blends which are opaque. In this way, novel three-component blends of PLLA/CAB/PCL were developed which are miscible when the CAB content is more than 30%, PLLA less than 80% and PCL less than 60%.

The demand for materials with high consistency obtained at relatively low temperatures has been leveraging the search for chemical processes substituents of the conventional ceramic method. This paper aims to obtain nanosized pigments encapsulated (core-shell) the basis of TiO2 doped with transition metals (Fe, Co, Ni, Al) through three (3) methods of synthesis: polymeric precursors (Pechini); hydrothermal microwave, and co-precipitation associated with the sol-gel chemistry. The study was motivated by the simplicity, speed and low power consumption characteristic of these methods. Systems costs are affordable because they allow achieving good control of microstructure, combined with high purity, controlled stoichiometric phases and allowing to obtain particles of nanometer size. The physical, chemical, morphological, structural and optical properties of the materials obtained were analyzed using different techniques for materials characterization. The powder pigments were tested in discoloration and degradation using a photoreactor through the solution of Remazol yellow dye gold (NNI), such as filtration, resulting in a separation of solution and the filter pigments available for further UV-Vis measurements . Different calcination temperatures taken after obtaining the post, the different methods were: 400 º C and 1000 º C. Using a fixed concentration of 10% (Fe, Al, Ni, Co) mass relative to the mass of titanium technologically and economically enabling the study. By transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique was possible to analyze and confirm the structural formation nanosized particles of encapsulated pigment, TiO2 having the diameter of 20 nm to 100 nm, and thickness of coated layer of Fe, Ni and Co between 2 nm and 10 nm. The method of synthesis more efficient has been studied in the work co-precipitation associated with sol-gel chemistry, in which the best results were achieved without the need for the obtainment of powders the calcination process

Heritage is defined by history which is by nature multi layered. The passage of time and the perspectives it affords, enables and even necessitates constant reexamination and reinterpretation of history. What effect do changes in historical perspective then have upon the definition of heritage which relies on an understanding of its history? The present paper attempts to engage with the notion of heritage, criteria of its definition, and the mutable nature of such designations with specific reference to architectural constructions and historical cities that enjoy or have enjoyed in the past the status of a ‘World Heritage Site’. Examples such as the Louvre museum in Paris or the King’s Cross station in London make an interesting study as they not only allow insight into the past but reflect the changes and adaptation over a period of time. Multiple alterations, some very recently, have modified them extensively since the time they were accorded the ‘World Heritage Site’ status. The above examples are contrasted by sites ridden with conflict such as the Bamiyan Valley. This site has been placed under the ‘World Heritage In Danger’ list by UNESCO taking into account the destruction of the Buddha statues in the region. The act of vandalism itself has had dual implications. While causing an irreparable loss to mankind of its heritage, it also serves as an effective symbol of religious fanaticism that is a pressing concern of our times. The paper then moves on to explore the case of Dresden which lost its ‘World Heritage’ status with the construction of the Waldschlösschen Bridge. This is a particularly interesting case because with the absolute destruction of the city during the Second World War, it was necessary to reconstruct the historical city while simultaneously acknowledging and addressing the modern day requirements. During the reconstruction, with the readaptation of the spaces, it was almost impossible to replicate the original architectural program or to undertake such a large reconstruction project employing only the traditional techniques and materials. This essentially made it a new city constructed in the image of the old. The recent necessity of a growing city was met by the construction of a bridge that has caused it to lose its ‘World Heritage’ status. Finally, this paper endeavours to foster discussion of questions central to the definition of heritage such as what happens when we have to adapt a living space to avoid its deterioration and descent into dereliction by overuse. Does it necessarily lose its historical value? What exactly is Historical value?.
