‘KP4’ is based on selected F4 progeny of 8 plants showing a low, creeping, tight-matted, late flowering growth habit. The original parental breeding population was selected from among 1600 diploid Rhodes grass seedlings grown as spaced plants; seven of the selected parental plants were from ‘Katambora’ and the eighth (which did not contribute as a maternal parent beyond the F1 generation) was a seedling from an unreleased accession. Four (4) cycles of mass selection were conducted, in which the selected plants from the previous generation were allowed to inter-cross in isolation in the field, and the resultant progeny later grown as spaced plants in the field for the next cycle of selection. Selection was for the following attributes: prostrate creeping early growth habit with short stolon internodes resulting in a dense stolon mat; leafy appearance; fine leaf and stem; and late flowering (i.e. a long period of vegetative growth before flowering). ‘KP4’ is a synthetic Rhodes grass cultivar multiplied from the selected fourth-generation plants produced by this line of breeding. ac susceptibility and electrical resistivity studies on polycrystalline Fe80-xNixCr20 (21 \leq x \leq 30) alloys, with x=21, 23, 26, and 30, between 4.2 and 80 K, are reported. A previous dc magnetization study indicated the presence of ferro-spin-glass mixed-phase behavior in x=23 and 26 alloys while the alloys with x=21 and 30 were found to be spin-glass and ferromagnetic, respectively. The present ac susceptibility results support the above picture. In the electrical resistivity study, a low-temperature minimum in the resistivity-temperature curve is observed in all the alloys except the ferromagnetic one.

We isolated and characterized 21 microsatellite loci in the vulnerable and iconic Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri. Loci were screened across eight individuals from the Burnett River and 40 individuals from the Pine River. Genetic diversity was low with between one and six alleles per locus within populations and a maximum expected heterozygosity of 0.774. These loci will now be available to assess effective population sizes and genetic structure in N. forsteri across its natural range in South East Queensland, Australia.

Castration of cattle using rubber rings is becoming increasingly popular due to the perceived ease of the procedure and greater operator safety when compared with surgical castration. Few comparative studies have investigated the effects of different castration methods and calf age on welfare outcomes, particularly in a tropical environment. Thirty Belmont Red (a tropically adapted breed), 3-month-old (liveweight 71–119 kg) and 30, 6-month-old (liveweight 141–189 kg) calves were assigned to a two age × three castration (surgical, ring and sham) treatment factorial study (Surg3, Surg6, Ring3, Ring6, Sham3 and Sham6, n = 10 for each treatment group). Welfare outcomes were assessed post-castration using: behaviour for 2 weeks; blood parameters (cortisol and haptoglobin concentrations) to 4 weeks; wound healing to 5 weeks; and liveweights to 6 weeks. More Surg calves struggled during castration compared with Sham and Ring (P < 0.05, 90 ± 7% vs. 20 ± 9% and 24 ± 10%) and performed more struggles (1.9 ± 0.2, 1.1 ± 0.3 and 1.1 ± 0.3 for Surg, Sham and Ring, respectively), suggesting that surgical castration caused most pain during performance of the procedure. A significant (P < 0.05) time × castration method × age interaction for plasma cortisol revealed that concentrations decreased most rapidly in Sham; the Ring6 calves failed to show reduced cortisol concentrations at 2 h post-castration, unlike other treatment groups. By 7 h post-castration, all treatment groups had similar concentrations. A significant (P < 0.01) interaction between time and castration method showed that haptoglobin concentrations increased slightly to 0.89 and 0.84 mg/mL for Surg and Ring, respectively over the first 3 days post-castration. Concentrations for Surg then decreased to levels similar to Sham by day 21 and, although concentrations for Ring decreased on day 7 to 0.76 mg/mL, they increased significantly on day 14 to 0.97 mg/mL before reducing to concentrations similar to the other groups (0.66 mg/mL) by day 21. Significantly (P < 0.05) more of the wounds of the 3-month compared with the 6-month calves scored as ‘healed’ at day 7 (74% vs. 39%), while more (P = 0.062) of the Surg than Ring scored as ‘healed’ at day 21 (60% vs. 29%). At day 14 there were significantly (P < 0.05) fewer healed wounds in Ring6 compared with other treatment groups (13% vs. 40–60%). Liveweight gain was significantly (P < 0.05) greater in 3-month (0.53 kg/day) than in 6-month calves (0.44 kg/day) and in Sham calves (P < 0.001, 0.54 kg/day), than in Ring (0.44 kg/day) and Surg (0.48 kg/day) calves. Overall, welfare outcomes were slightly better for Surg than Ring calves due to reduced inflammation and faster wound healing, with little difference between age groups.

This article draws on the design and implementation of three mobile learning projects introduced by Flanagan in 2011, 2012 and 2014 engaging a total of 206 participants. The latest of these projects is highlighted in this article. Two other projects provide additional examples of innovative strategies to engage mobile and cloud systems describing how electronic and mobile technology can help facilitate teaching and learning, assessment for learning and assessment as learning, and support communities of practice. The second section explains the theoretical premise supporting the implementation of technology and promulgates a hermeneutic phenomenological approach. The third section discusses mobility, both in terms of the exploration of wearable technology in the prototypes developed as a result of the projects, and the affordances of mobility within pedagogy. Finally the quantitative and qualitative methods in place to evaluate m-learning are explained.

Laskelmat suoritettiin yleisen tasapainon (CGE) RegFinDyn -aluemallilla vuosille 2008–2020. Pajala–Kolarin kaivos toisi valtiolle yhteensä 374,0 miljoonaa euroa verojen ja veronluonteisten maksujen lisäkertymää. Suomen osuus lisäkertymästä olisi 206,1 (55,1 %) ja Ruotsin 167,9 (44,9 %) miljoonaa euroa. Valtio saisi väyläinvestointiensa kokonaiskustannukset takaisin noin vuonna 2022 eli 15 vuodessa, vaikkei Ruotsi osallistuisi rahoitukseen. Kolarin kunnan verokertymä kasvaisi vuosina 2011–2014 yhteensä 66 %:lla ja vuodesta 2017 lähtien 12 %:lla vuoteen 2012 verrattuna. Pajalan kunnan verokertymä kasvaisi vastaavina vuosina yhteensä 97 %:lla ja vuodesta 2017 lähtien 15 %:lla vuoteen 2011 verrattuna. Soklin kaivos toisi valtiolle yhteensä 178,9 miljoonaa euroa verojen ja veronluonteisten maksujen lisäkertymää. Valtio saisi väyläinvestointiensa kokonaiskustannukset takaisin noin vuonna 2030 eli 21 vuodessa. Kaivoksen läheisen seitsemän kunnan ryhmän verokertymä kasvaisi vuosina 2011-2014 yhteensä 30 %:lla ja vuodesta 2019 lähtien 1 %:lla vuoteen 2007 verrattuna.
