The carbon isotopic signature of carbonates depends on secular variations of organic carbon and carbonate carbon production/burial rates. A decrease in carbonate productivity makes the organic/carbonate carbon ratio unstable up to the point that even minor variations in the organic carbon reservoirs can provoke carbon isotopic shifts. The delta(13)C positive shifts of the middle Carixian (early Pliensbachian) and the early Bajocian recorded in the Umbria-Marche-Sabina domain represent a good example of this mechanism. Both sedimentology and lithostratigraphy of pelagic platform-basin carbonate systems in this area show that important changes in the source of carbonates correspond to the observed isotopic shifts. The middle Carixian event is in fact well correlatable to the drastic reduction of benthic carbonate production on rift-related intrabasinal highs, which then became pelagic carbonate platforms. The early Bajocian event is concomitant with the beginning of a long hiatus on the pelagic carbonate platforms and with a drop of the biodiversity of calcareous organisms followed by the onset of biosiliceous sedimentation in basins. The Late Triassic and Jurassic platform and the oceanic complexes in Evvoia, Greece, share a complementary plate-tectonic evolution. Shallow marine carbonate deposition responded to changing rates of subsidence and uplift, whilst the adjacent ocean underwent spreading, and then convergence, collision and finally obduction over the platform complex. Late Triassic ocean spreading correlated with platform subsidence and the formation of a long-persisting peritidal passive-margin platform. Incipient drowning occurred from the Sinemurian to the late Middle Jurassic. This subsidence correlated with intra-oceanic subduction and plate convergence that led to supra-subduction calc-alkaline magmatism and the formation of a primitive volcanic arc. During the Middle Jurassic, plate collision caused arc uplift above the carbonate compensation depth (CCD) in the oceanic realm, and related thrust-faulting, on the platform, led to sub-aerial exposures. Patch-reefs developed there during the Late Oxfordian to Kimmeridgian. Advanced oceanic nappe-loading caused platform drowning below the CCD during the Tithonian, which is documented by intercalations of reefal turbidites with non-carbonate radiolarites. Radiolarites and bypass-turbidites, consisting of siliciclastic greywacke, terminate the platform succession beneath the emplaced oceanic nappe during late Tithonian to Valanginian time.

The Jbel Saghro alkaline complex was emplaced close to the eastern edge of the Moroccan Anti-Atlas. Within the northern part, two types of nephelinite were recognized [Ibhi and Nachit, 1999 and lbhi, 2000]. The first type (olivine-rich nephelinite) constitutes the main volcanic mass south of the Bou Gafer granit (fig. 1), where the volcanism had been active at least during 2 Ma, between 9.6 and 7.5 +/- 0.1 Ma [Berrahma et al., 1993]. The second group outcrops in the north (Foum El Kouss). It consists of pyroxene nephelinites which are younger (2.9 +/- 0.1 Ma) [Berrahma et al., 1993], and bears carbonatitic xenoliths, melteigitic pyroxenites and metasomatised peridotite xenoliths. Geochemically, the pyroxene nephelinite is highly enriched in LILE compared with the first one. The mineralogical and geochemical characteristics may be explained by the incorporation of carbonatitic and melteigitic pyroxenite segregates of carbonatitic affinity.

Most sedimentary modelling programs developed in recent years focus on either terrigenous or carbonate marine sedimentation. Nevertheless, only a few programs have attempted to consider mixed terrigenous-carbonate sedimentation, and most of these are two-dimensional, which is a major restriction since geological processes take place in 3D. This paper presents the basic concepts of a new 3D mathematical forward simulation model for clastic sediments, which was developed from SIMSAFADIM, a previous 3D carbonate sedimentation model. The new extended model, SIMSAFADIM-CLASTIC, simulates processes of autochthonous marine carbonate production and accumulation, together with clastic transport and sedimentation in three dimensions of both carbonate and terrigenous sediments. Other models and modelling strategies may also provide realistic and efficient tools for prediction of stratigraphic architecture and facies distribution of sedimentary deposits. However, SIMSAFADIM-CLASTIC becomes an innovative model that attempts to simulate different sediment types using a process-based approach, therefore being a useful tool for 3D prediction of stratigraphic architecture and facies distribution in sedimentary basins. This model is applied to the neogene Vallès-Penedès half-graben (western Mediterranean, NE Spain) to show the capacity of the program when applied to a realistic geologic situation involving interactions between terrigenous clastics and carbonate sediments.

New isotopic results on bulk carbonate and mollusc (gastropods and bivalves) samples from Lake Geneva (Switzerland), spanning the period from the Oldest Dryas to the present day, are compared with pre-existing stable isotope data. According to preliminary calibration of modern samples, Lake Geneva endogenic calcite precipitates at or near oxygen isotopic equilibrium with ambient water, confirming the potential of this large lake to record paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic changes. The onset of endogenic calcite precipitation at the beginning of the Allerod biozone is clearly indicated by the oxygen isotopic signature of bulk carbonate. A large change in delta(13)C values occurs during the Preboreal. This carbon shift is likely to be due to a change in bioproductivity and/or to a `'catchment effect'', the contribution of biogenic CO2 from the catchment area to the dissolved inorganic carbon reservoir of the lake water becoming significant only during the Preboreal. Gastropods are confirmed as valuable for studies of changes in paleotemperature and in paleowater isotopic composition, despite the presence of a vital effect. Mineralogical evidence indicates an increased detrital influence upon sedimentation since the Subboreal time period. On the other hand, stable isotope measurements of Subatlantic carbonate sediments show values comparable to those of pure endogenic calcite and of gastropods (taking into account the vital effect). This apparent disagreement still remains difficult to explain.

Iowa has more than 13,000 miles of portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement. Some pavements have performed well for over 50 years, while others have been removed or overlaid due to the premature deterioration of joints and cracks. Some of the premature deterioration is classical D-cracking, which is attributed to a critically saturated aggregate pore system (freeze-thaw damage). However, some of the premature deterioration is related to adverse chemical reactivity involving carbonate coarse aggregate. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the value of a chemical analysis of carbonate aggregate using X-ray equipment to identify good or poor quality. At least 1.5% dolomite is necessary in a carbonate aggregate to produce a discernible dolomite peak. The shift of the maximum-intensity X-ray diffraction dolomite d-spacing can be used to predict poor performance of a carbonate aggregate in PCC. A limestone aggregate with a low percentage of strontium (less than 0.013) and phosphorus (less than 0.010) would be expected to give good performance in PCC pavement. Poor performance in PCC pavement is expected from limestone aggregates with higher percentages (above 0.05) of strontium.

Research has shown that one of the major contributing factors in early joint deterioration of portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement is the quality of the coarse aggregate. Conventional physical and freeze/thaw tests are slow and not satisfactory in evaluating aggregate quality. In the last ten years the Iowa DOT has been evaluating X-ray analysis and other new technologies to predict aggregate durability in PCC pavement. The objective of this research is to evaluate thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of carbonate aggregate. The TGA testing has been conducted with a TA 2950 Thermogravimetric Analyzer. The equipment is controlled by an IBM compatible computer. A "TA Hi-RES" (trademark) software package allows for rapid testing while retaining high resolution. The carbon dioxide is driven off the dolomite fraction between 705 deg C and 745 deg C and off the calcite fraction between 905 deg C and 940 deg C. The graphical plot of the temperature and weight loss using the same sample size and test procedure demonstrates that the test is very accurate and repeatable. A substantial number of both dolomites and limestones (calcites) have been subjected to TGA testing. The slopes of the weight loss plot prior to the dolomite and calcite transitions does correlate with field performance. The noncarbonate fraction, which correlates to the acid insolubles, can be determined by TGA for most calcites and some dolomites. TGA has provided information that can be used to help predict the quality of carbonate aggregate.

The research project, HR-110, was begun in the fall of 1964 to further investigate the compositional and mechanical properties of some of the carbonate rocks used as aggregate in portland cement concrete. Samples were taken only from those portions of the quarries that are used as aggregate in portland cement concrete by the Iowa State Highway Commission except where designated by commission personnel for purposes of evaluation of potential aggregate sources. Where practical, the samples were taken from each bed recognized by the Highway Commission geologists, and in most instances, the thicker beds were sampled at the top, middle, and bottom to detect any lithologic changes that escaped megascopic observation.
