Two quadrupole splitting doublets with delta E_q = 0.74 and 1.62 mm/s were found in the montmorillonite spectra. The more intense doublet corresponds to iron in a somewhat distorted tetrahedral coordination, while the less intense corresponds to quadri-coordinated iron. The EPR spectrum also exhibits two lines with a q-factor of 3 and 4.3, which corresponds to transformed minerals.

Surface currents and sediment distribution of the SE South American upper continental margin are under influence of the South American Monsoon System (SAMS) and the Southern Westerly Wind Belt (SWWB). Both climatic systems determine the meridional position of the Subtropical Shelf Front (STSF) and probably also of the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence (BMC). We reconstruct the changing impact of the SAMS and the SWWB on sediment composition at the upper Rio Grande Cone off southern Brazil during the last 14 cal kyr combining sedimentological, geochemical, micropaleontological and rock magnetic proxies of marine sediment core GeoB 6211-2. Sharp reciprocal changes in ferri- and paramagnetic mineral content and prominent grain-size shifts give strong clues to systematic source changes and transport modes of these mostly terrigenous sediments. Our interpretations support the assumption that the SAMS over SE South America was weaker than today during most of the Late Glacial and entire Early Holocene, while the SWWB was contracted to more southern latitudes, resembling modern austral summer-like conditions. In consequence, the STSF and the BMC were driven to more southern positions than today's, favoring the deposition of Fe-rich but weakly magnetic La Plata River silts at the Rio Grande Cone. During the Mid Holocene, the northern boundary of the SWWB migrated northward, while the STSF reached its northernmost position of the last 14 cal kyr and the BMC most likely arrived at its modern position. This shift enabled the transport of Antarctic diatoms and more strongly magnetic Argentinean shelf sands to the Rio Grande Cone, while sediment contributions from the La Plata River became less important. During the Late Holocene, the modern El Niño Southern Oscillation set in and the SAMS and the austral tradewinds intensified, causing a southward shift of the STSF to its modern position. This reinforced a significant deposition of La Plata River silts at the Rio Grande Cone. These higher magnetic silts with intermediate Fe contents mirror the modern more humid terrestrial climatic conditions over SE South America.

57Fe Mössbauer spectra of 15 oceanic sediment samples collected from Site 612 (Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 95) were recorded. These spectra showed that most of the iron in the sediments was present as high-spin, paramagnetic Fe2+ and Fe3+. The ferrous iron was mainly distributed in terrigenous clays and biogenic carbonates. The variation of the Mössbauer parameters for Fe2+ with sub-bottom depth suggests that the main Fe2+-bearing component changed with geologic time. The amount of iron in each iron-bearing phase as estimated from the corresponding peak areas in the spectra also changed with depth. These variations in the Mössbauer parameters and peak areas are correlated with lithologic changes in the sediment column.

A detailed rock magnetic investigation has been carried out on Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) pelagic sediments from the Central Equatorial Pacific. This comprises hysteresis and thermomagnetic measurements, Lowrie-Fuller test and, for the first time, ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). Nearly stochiometric magnetite in two grain size fractions, single domain (SD) and multi domain (MD), has been deduced to be the carrier of magnetic remanence. Comparatively strong paramagnetic contributions are carried by pyrite, being identified by X-ray analysis. The statistical analysis of paleomagnetic parameters (NRM, MDF, initial susceptibility, Königsberger ratio Q) from a large number (> 1000) of samples, supported by hysteresis measurements, indicates a latitude and sedimentation rate dependent ratio of SD/MD grains. Possible sources for the magnetic constituents are discussed in terms of bacterial, volcanic, meteoritic and authigenic origin.

Isolated kerogens from four sites in the Middle Valley hydrothermal region of the Juan de Fuca Ridge (Ocean Drilling Project (ODP) Leg 139) were analysed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Measurements of peak width, spin density and power saturation for site 857 kerogens, which increased regularly in maturity downhole, show correlation with vitrinite reflectance values from 0.61 to 2.5%, indicating the start of the oil window at depths from 200 to 400 m. Spin density increases to 1.56 * 10**17 spins per gram and peak width decreases to 3.45 G (gauss) with increasing depth. The tendency to power saturate also decreases with increasing maturity and increasing vitrinite reflectance within the oil window. These trends are consistent with a model in which exchange processes are occurring and cause changes in the EPR behavior of samples from this site. Sediments from other Middle Valley sites, 855, 856 and 858 contain large quantities of pyrite with Mn2+ impurities which interact with the carbon radical to distort the EPR measurements.

We propose a simple picture for the occurrence of superconductivity and the pressure dependence of the superconducting critical temperature, T-SC, in ZrZn2. According to our hypothesis the pairing potential is independent of pressure, but the exchange splitting, E-xc leads to a pressure dependence in the (spin dependent) density of states at the Fermi level, D-sigma (epsilon(F)). Assuming p-wave pairing T-SC is dependent on D-sigma (epsilonF) which ensures that, in the absence of non-magnetic impurities, T-SC decreases as pressure is applied until it reaches a minimum in the paramagnetic state. Disorder reduces this minimum to zero, this gives the illusion that the superconductivity disappears at the same pressure as ferromagnetism does.

Metal ion binding properties of the immunosuppressant drug cyclosporin A have been investigated. Complexation studies in acetonitrile solution using H-1 NMR and CD spectroscopy yielded 1:1 metal-peptide binding constants (log(10)K) for potassium(l), < 1, magnesium(II), 4.8 +/- 0.2. and calcium(II), 5.0 +/- 1.0. The interaction of copper(II) with cyclosporin A in methanol was investigated with UV/visible and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. No complexation of copper(II) was observed in neutral solution. In the presence of base, monomeric copper(II) complexes were detected. These results support the possibility that cyclosporin A has ionophoric properties for biologically important essential metal ions. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The three-dimensional branched nature of dendritic macromolecules provides many potential sites per molecule for the complexation of metal ions. Therefore, dendrimers may act as hosts for metals with coordination potentially occurring at the periphery, the interior, or both. To understand further the complexation of dendrimers with metal ions EXAFS experiments were carried out. In this work, the interaction of amine-terminated polyamido(amine), PAMAM, dendrimer with copper(II) ions determined by EXAFS is reported. It was found that a model consisting of the copper(II) ion forming five- and six-membered rings by chelating with the primary amine, amide, and tertiary amine nitrogen donors of the PAMAM dendrimer could describe the experimental EXAFS data well. Corroborative evidence for binding to amide nitrogen donors comes from the broadening of NMR resonances of a copper(Il)-PAMAM mixture revealing the presence of paramagnetic copper(II) ions at these sites. The significance of the results presented in this paper is that copper(II) ions form complexes within the dendrimer structure and not just at the periphery. The current study may have implications for the use of PAMAM dendrimers as effective ligands in sensing systems.

Patellamide D (patH(4)) is a cyclic octapeptide isolated from the ascidian Lissoclinum patella. The peptide possesses a 24-azacrown-8 macrocyclic structure containing two oxazoline and two thiazole rings, each separated by an amino acid. The present spectrophotometric, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and mass spectral studies show that patellamide D reacts with CuCl, and triethylamine in acetonitrile to form mononuclear and binuclear copper(II) complexes containing chloride. Molecular modelling and EPR studies suggest that the chloride anion bridges the copper(II) ions in the binuclear complex [Cu-2(patH(2))(mu-Cl)](+). These results contrast with a previous study employing both base and methanol, the latter substituting for chloride in the copper(II) complexes en route to the stable mu-carbonato binuclear copper(II) complex [Cu-2 (patH(2))(mu-CO3)]. Solvent clearly plays an important role in both stabilising these metal ion complexes and influencing their chemical reactivities. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Pure limestones beneath the paleosols on San Salvador Island, Bahamas, contain strong positive magnetic susceptibility anomalies, although the iron content is generally very low. These magnetic phenomena differ from those associated with disconformities, which are marked by accumulation of paramagnetic airborne dust deposits with relatively high iron content. The strength and characters of the magnetic response in these subsurface zones correspond to the presence of magnetite, particularly small single-domain magnetite crystals of microbial origin. These crystals are not present elsewhere in the intergranular rock pores or microvugs. They are preferentially concentrated in capillary microborings, which developed concurrently with formation of calcite cements that have soil-related C and O isotope compositions. These magnetic zones occur several meters below the overlying soil horizons. Very thin and long linear microborings may be attributable to cyanobacterial microborers. The single-domain magnetites in these micrometer-size tunnels plugged by calcite appear to result from later occupation of these tiny holes by magnetotactic bacteria. Inorganic origin of the magnetite seems unlikely. Numerous traces that suggest subsurface microbial activity provide evidence that may be used to develop possible scenarios for subsequent biological studies of the precise bacteria involved.

The basis for the neuroprotectant effect of D-mannitol in reducing the sensory neurological disturbances seen in ciguatera poisoning, is unclear. Pacific ciguatoxin-1 (P-CTX-1), at a concentration 10 nM, caused a statistically significant swelling of rat sensory dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons that was reversed by hyperosmolar 50 MM D-mannitol. However, using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, it was found that P-CTX-1 failed to generate hydroxyl free radicals at concentrations of toxin that caused profound effects on neuronal excitability. Whole-cell patch-clamp recordings from DRG neurons revealed that both hyper- and iso-osmolar 50 MM D-mannitol prevented the membrane depolarisation and repetitive firing of action potentials induced by P-CTX-1. In addition, both hyper- and iso-osmolar 50 MM D-mannitol prevented the hyperpolarising shift in steady-state inactivation and the rise in leakage current through tetrodotoxin (TTX)-sensitive Na-v channels, as well as the increased rate of recovery from inactivation of TTX-resistant Nav channels induced by P-CTX-1. D-Mannitol also reduced, but did not prevent, the inhibition of peak TTX-sensitive and TTX-resistant I-Na amplitude by P-CTX-1. Additional experiments using hyper- and isoosmolar D-sorbitol, hyperosmolar sucrose and the free radical scavenging agents Trolox (R) and L-ascorbic acid showed that these agents, unlike D-mannitol, failed to prevent the effects of P-CTX-1 on spike electrogenesis and Na-v channel gating. These selective actions of D-mannitol indicate that it does not act purely as an osmotic agent to reduce swelling of nerves, but involves a more complex action dependent on the Nav channel subtype, possibly to alter or reduce toxin association. The multiheme SoxAX proteins are notable for their unusual heme ligation (His/Cys-persulfide in the SoxA subunit) and the complexity of their EPR spectra. The diheme SoxAX protein from Starkeya novella has been expressed using Rhodobacter capsulatus as a host expression system. rSoxAX was correctly formed in the periplasm of the host and contained heme c in similar amounts as the native SoxAX. ESI-MS showed that the full length rSoxA, in spite of never having undergone catalytic turnover, existed in several forms, with the two major forms having masses of 28 687 +/- 4 and 28 718 +/- 4 Da. The latter form exceeds the expected mass of rSoxA by 31 4 Da, a mass close to that of a sulfur atom and indicating that a fraction of the recombinant protein contains a cysteine persulfide modification. EPR spectra of rSoxAX contained all four heme-dependent EPR signals (LS1a, LS1b, LS2, LS3) found in the native SoxAX proteins isolated from bacteria grown under sulfur chemolithotrophic conditions. Exposure of the recombinant SoxAX to different sulfur compounds lead to changes in the SoxA mass profile as determined by ESI while maintaining a fully oxidized SoxAX visible spectrum. Thiosulfate, the proposed SoxAX substrate, did not cause any mass changes while after exposure to dimethylsulfoxide a + 112 +/- 4 Da form of SoxA became dominant in the mass spectrum. Variable-frequency pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance studies of the molybdenum(V) center of sulfite dehydrogenase (SDH) clearly show couplings from nearby exchangeable protons that are assigned to a (MoOHn)-O-v group. The hyperfine parameters for these exchangeable protons of SDH are the same at both low and high pH and similar to those for the high-pH forms of sulfite oxidases (SOs) from eukaryotes. The SDH proton parameters are distinctly different from the low-pH forms of chicken and human so.

Significant new insights into the interactions of the potent insulin-enhancing compound bis(maltolato)oxovanadium(IV) (BMOV) with the serum proteins, apo-transferrin and albumin, are presented. Identical reaction products are observed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) with either BMOV or vanadyl sulfate (VOSO4) in solutions of human serum apo-transferrin. Further detailed study rules out the presence of a ternary ligand-vanadyl-transferrin complex proposed previously. By contrast, differences in reaction products are observed for the interactions of BMOV and VOSO4 with human serum albumin (HSA), wherein adduct formation between albumin and BMOV is detected. In BMOV-albumin solutions, vanadyl ions are bound in a unique manner not observed in comparable solutions Of VOSO4 and albumin. Presentation of chelated vanadyl ions precludes binding at the numerous nonspecific sites and produces a unique EPR spectrum which is assigned to a BMOV-HSA adduct. The adduct species cannot be produced, however, from a solution Of VOSO4 and HSA titrated with maltol. Addition of maltol to a VOSO4-HSA solution instead results in formation of a different end product which has been assigned as a ternary complex, VO(ma)(HSA). Furthermore, analysis of solution equilibria using a model system of BMOV with 1-methylimidazole (formation constant log K = 4.5(1), by difference electronic absorption spectroscopy) lends support to an adduct binding mode (VO(ma)(2)-HSA) proposed herein for BMOV and HSA. This detailed report of an in vitro reactivity difference between VOSO4 and BMOV may have bearing on the form of active vanadium metabolites delivered to target tissues. Albumin binding of vanadium chelates is seen to have a potentially dramatic effect on pharmacokinetics, transport, and efficacy of these antidiabetic chelates.

The temperature dependence of the X-ray crystal structure and powder EPR spectrum of [(HC(Ph2PO)(3))(2)CU]-(ClO4)(2)center dot 2H(2)O is reported, and the structure at room temperature confirms that reported previously. Below similar to 100 K, the data imply a geometry with near elongated tetragonal symmetry for the [(HC(Ph2PO)(3))(2)Cu](2+) complex, but on warming the two higher Cu-O bond lengths and g-values progressively converge, and by 340 K the bond lengths correspond to a compressed tetragonal geometry. The data may be interpreted satisfactorily assuming an equilibrium among the energy levels of a Cu-O-6 polyhedron subjected to Jahn-Teller vibronic coupling and a lattice strain. However, agreement with the experiment is obtained only if the orthorhombic component of the lattice strain decreases to a negligible value as the temperature approaches 340 K.
