Berry phase in open quantum systems: a quantum Langevin equation approach

The evolution of a two level system with a slowly varying Hamiltonian, modeled as a spin 1/2 in a slowly varying magnetic field, and interacting with a quantum environment, modeled as a bath of harmonic oscillators is analyzed using a quantum Langevin approach. This allows to easily obtain the dissipation time and the correction to the Berry phase in the case of an adiabatic cyclic evolution.

Open Adoption: Adoptive Parents' Experiences of Birth Family Contact and Talking to Their Child about Adoption

The trend towards more open adoption presents adopters with unique parenting challenges associated with satisfying the child’s curiosity about their origins, and maintaining relationships with birth family through contact. This paper focuses on the experiences of 20 sets of adoptive parents who were interviewed as part of the Northern Ireland Care Pathways and Outcomes Study. Interviews were analysed following the principles of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). It explores adoptive parents’ experience of talking to their child about adoption, and of post-adoption contact with members of the birth family. Adopters discussed adoption sensitively with their child, but were concerned that difficult and complex family histories would present a risk to the child’s self-esteem and emotional well-being. All forms of contact proved emotionally and practically burdensome, however adopters were committed to making it work for the child’s benefit, and were open to increased contact should the child wish it in the future. There was little relationship with birth family outside of formal contact. The study reveals a need for a mechanism to facilitate communication with birth family if adopters are to be able to respond to the child’s changing need for contact and information.

Stochastic Sznajd Model in open community

We extend the Sznajd Model for opinion formation by introducing persuasion probabilities for opinions. Moreover, we couple the system to an environment which mimics the application of the opinion. This results in a feedback, representing single-state opinion transitions in opposite to the two-state opinion transitions for persuading other people. We call this model opinion formation in an open community (OFOC). It can be seen as "stochastic extension of the Sznajd model for an open community, because it allows for "special choice of parameters to recover the original Sznajd model. We demonstrate the effect of feedback in the OFOC model by applying it to a scenario in which, e.g., opinion B is worse then opinion A but easier explained to other people. Casually formulated we analyzed the question, how much better one has to be, in order to persuade other people, provided the opinion is worse. Our results reveal a linear relation between the transition probability for opinion B and the influence of the environment on B.

Eyes open to stem cells: safety trial may pave the way for cell therapy to treat retinal disease in patients

A clinical trial using human embryonic stem cell (hESC) therapy for an inherited retinal degenerative disease is about to commence. The Advanced Cell Technology (ACT) trial will treat patients with Stargardt's macular dystrophy using transplanted retinal pigment epithelium derived from hESCs. Currently, no effective treatment is available for Stargardt's disease so a stem cell-based therapy that can slow progression of this blinding condition could represent a significant breakthrough. While there are some hurdles to clear, the ACT trial is a fine example of translational research that could eventually pave the way for a range of stem cell therapies for the retina and other tissues.

Reproductive disruption in Fasciola hepatica associated with incomplete efficacy of a new experimental formulation of triclabendazole

The objective of the present study was to analyse the reproductive viability (using histopathologic studies) of Fasciola hepatica from cattle artificially infected and treated subcutaneously with a new experimental formulation of triclabendazole (8 mg/kg b.w.). The results of the efficacy controlled test, which only takes into account the presence of live adult flukes, indicated that, whilst in the control group (n=7)533 live specimens were recovered, in the test groups (doses of 8 and 12 mg/kg b.w.) only 195 and 47 adults were recovered, respectively. These numbers indicate efficacies of 69% and 95.6%, respectively. It was observed in that dose of 8 mg/kg b.w. some specimens remained viable, but they were infertile, which severely compromises the biological cycle of the trematode. in the testis tubules of flukes treated with the low dose of TCBZ (8 mg/kg), very few cells were present and the vitelline follicles were markedly reduced in size and each follicle contained very few cells. This would have direct implications for the pathogenesis of the parasitosis since the remaining parasites would produce little clinical-productive manifestations, would stimulate the immune response and would find it difficult to establish future re-infestations/re-infections. Consequently, these observations will also prompt a review of certain methodological and interpretative aspects related to efficacy tests, where the only discriminative factor is the reduction of the adult parasite load. The spin-orbit angles of the transiting exoplanets WASP-1b, WASP-24b, WASP-38b and HAT-P-8b from Rossiter-McLaughlin observations

We present observations of the Rossiter–McLaughlin effect for the transiting exoplanets WASP-1b, WASP-24b, WASP-38b and HAT-P-8b, and deduce the orientations of the planetary orbits with respect to the host stars’ rotation axes. The planets WASP-24b, WASP-38b and HAT-P-8b appear to move in prograde orbits and be well aligned, having sky-projected spin-orbit angles consistent with zero: λ=−4°.7 ± 4°.0, 15°+33−43 and Graphic, respectively. The host stars have Teff < 6250 K and conform with the trend of cooler stars having low obliquities. WASP-38b is a massive planet on a moderately long period, eccentric orbit so may be expected to have a misaligned orbit given the high obliquities measured in similar systems. However, we find no evidence for a large spin-orbit angle. By contrast, WASP-1b joins the growing number of misaligned systems and has an almost polar orbit, λ=Graphic. It is neither very massive, eccentric nor orbiting a hot host star, and therefore does not share the properties of many other misaligned systems.

Catalysing open innovation through publicly funded R&D: A Comparison of University and Company-based research centres

Public funding of university and company-based R&D centres of excellence is widespread both in core and more peripheral regions. What is less well-known is whether these R&D centres can catalyse multi-directional, multi-actor and iterative innovation. Based on data from a real-time monitoring study, this article explores the development of 18 R&D centres’ external connections. University-based R&D centres establish more new connections than company-based centres and are more likely to be interacting with small or micro-firms. However, there is a general bias towards links with larger firms; micro, small and medium-sized enterprises also are less likely to be involved in collaborative R&D with research centres than other types of relationships. The results suggest the potential for R&D centres to act as a catalyst for open innovation but emphasise the need to ensure that the focus of the R&D being conducted is relevant to the needs of smaller firms.

Spin-orbit effects on photoionization-produced alignment of the Ar+ 3p(4)(P-3)4p levels

We have determined photoionization spectra of Ar with excitation of the 3p(4)(P-3)4p states emphasizing the effects of two different classes of Ar+ spin-orbit interactions. The spin-orbit splitting of each Ar+ state adequately describes the resonant excitation of the quartet states of Ar+, and gives Ar photoionization cross sections with excitation of the 3p4(3P)4p P-2(3/2)o and P-4(5/2)o levels of Ar+ in sufficiently good agreement with experiment to identify the observed resonances and to estimate the excitation strengths. In addition, we demonstrate the importance of spin-orbit induced mixing of different Ar+ LS-coupled states for observables such as the alignment of the 3p(4)(P-3)4p P-4(5/2)o level and the excitation of Rydberg series converging to the 3p(4)(P-3)4p S-2(o) and S-4(o) thresholds.

Microscopic theory for random processes in weakly-coupled open systems

In order to relate macroscopic random motion (described e.g. by Langevin-type theories) to microscopic dynamics, we have undertaken the derivation of a Fokker-Planck-type equation from first microscopic principles. Both subsystems are subject to an external force field. Explicit expressions for the diffusion and drift coefficients are obtained, in terms of the field.

Open access gastroscopy--3 year experience of a new service

We have audited the first 3 yr of a new open access gastroscopy service in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast to assess service demands, patient demography and diagnostic trends. Over 3 yr there were 1872 referrals (800 from fundholding general practitioners), 8.8 per cent were non attenders and 5.4 per cent cancelled appointments. Endoscopic diagnostic categories showed no significant change over the 3 yr, 39 per cent non ulcer dyspepsia, 35 per cent gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), 17 per cent peptic ulcer disease (PUD), 6 per cent GORD and PUD, 1 per cent gastric erosions and 0.8 per cent carcinoma.
