Die Entwicklung der Akustik-Lern-CD hatte das Ziel, den Anwendungsbezug von theoretischem Wissen bei Regelverstärkern zu fördern. Die Studenten konnten nach dem theoretischen Unterricht zwar Hüllkurven zeichnen und Kompressionsraten berechnen, hatten aber Probleme, in konkreten Situationen wie z.B. beim Übersteuern von Instrumenten den korrekten Regelverstärker auszuwählen. Um einen besseren Wissenstransfer zu erreichen, werden bei der Lern-CD dem Lerner Situationen angeboten, in denen eigene Konstruktionsleistungen möglich sind und in denen kontextgebunden, interaktiv gelernt werden kann.(DIPF/Orig.)

Das Notebook-Seminar stellte ein M-Learning-Szenario dar, welches durch die Integration des Notebooks in die Lehre eine Verbesserung derselben erwirken soll. Methodischer Schwerpunkt ist das projektorientierte Lernen, welches neben der Vermittlung von Fachinhalten zum Ziel hat, auch fachübergreifende Kompetenzen zu vermitteln. Auf Basis einer ein Semester umfassenden Projektaufgabe werden bestimmte Lernhandlungen von den Studierenden absolviert. Diese Lernhandlungen fassen bestimmte Lernziele, die in Fach-, Methoden und Sozialkompetenz aufgeteilt sind. Das Paper beleuchtet Aspekte des M-Learnings und konzipiert vor diesem Hintergrund das Notebook-Seminar. Danach wird das in die Praxis umgesetzte Konzept vorgestellt und die gemachten Erfahrungen, sowie die Ergebnisse der Evaluation diskutiert.(DIPF/Orig.)

Mit dem Einsatz der neuen Medien, insbesondere des Internet, im Bereich des Lehrens und Lernens werden – auch nach dem Abklingen der ersten Euphorie – hohe Erwartungen verbunden. Dabei spielen neue, pädagogisch interessante Nutzungsmöglichkeiten, aber auch wirtschaftliche Interessen eine wesentliche Rolle. Die damit verbundenen Fragen (z.B. nach der Sicherung von Qualität und Gewährleistung von Rentabilität) führen zu einem steigenden Interesse an Metadaten zur Beschreibung von telematischen Lehr-/Lernmaterialien (zum Begriff „telematisch“ vgl. Zimmer, 1997, S. 111). Der folgende Beitrag befasst sich mit Erwartungen und Schwierigkeiten bei der Entwicklung und dem Einsatz pädagogischer Metadaten. Im Anschluss an eine kurze allgemeine Darstellung der Funktion von Metadaten wird unter Rückgriff auf Vorschläge verschiedener Gremien zur Bestimmung pädagogischer Metadaten gezeigt, welche Probleme bei deren Findung, Benennung und Implementierung auftreten: So stellen sich z.B. Fragen nach der interkulturellen Übertragbarkeit, nach den unterschiedlichen Perspektiven von Contentanbietern und Lernenden sowie auch die grundsätzliche Frage nach der Möglichkeit der Standardisierung pädagogischer Kategorien. Anhand des Praxisbeispiels der Virtuellen Fachhochschule für Technik, Informatik und Wirtschaft werden projekttypische Entwicklungsstufen von (pädagogischen) Metadaten dargestellt. Vorschläge zur Lösung der beschriebenen Probleme und ein Ausblick mit Forschungsfragen schließen den Beitrag ab.(DIPF/Orig.)

In most e-learning scenarios, communication and on-line collaboration is seen as an add-on feature to resource based learning. This paper will endeavour to present a pedagogical framework for inverting this view and putting communities of practice as the basic paradigm for e-learning. It will present an approach currently being used in the development of a virtual Radiopharmacy community, called VirRAD, and will discuss how theory can lead to an instructional design approach to support technologically enhanced learning.(DIPF/Orig.)

Service-learning in higher education is gaining attention as a reliable tool to support students’ learning and fulfil the mission of higher education institutions (HEIs). This dissertation addresses existing gaps in the literature by examining the effects and perspectives of service-learning in HEIs through three studies. The first study compares the effects of a voluntary semester-long service-learning course with traditional courses. A survey completed by 110 students before and after the lectures found no significant group differences in the psychosocial variables under inspection. Nevertheless, service-learning students showed higher scores concerning the quality of participation. Factors such as students’ perception of competence, duration of service-learning, and self-reported measures may have influenced the results. The second study explores the under-researched perspective of community partners in higher education and European settings. Twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted with community partners from various community organisations across Europe. The results highlight positive effects on community members and organisations, intrinsic motivations, organisational empowerment, different forms of reciprocity, the co-educational role of community partners, and the significant role of a sense of community and belonging. The third study focuses on faculty perspectives on service-learning in the European context. Twenty-two semi-structured interviews were conducted in 14 European countries. The findings confirm the transformative impact of service-learning on the community, students, teachers, and HEIs, emphasising the importance of motivation and institutionalisation processes in sustaining engaged scholarship. The study also identifies the relevance of the community experience, sense of community, and community responsibility with the service-learning experience; relatedness is proposed as the fifth pillar of service-learning. Overall, this dissertation provides new insights into the effects and perspectives of service-learning in higher education. It integrates the 4Rs model with the addition of relatedness, guiding the theoretical and practical implications of the findings. The dissertation also suggests limitations and areas for further research.

Miniaturized flying robotic platforms, called nano-drones, have the potential to revolutionize the autonomous robots industry sector thanks to their very small form factor. The nano-drones’ limited payload only allows for a sub-100mW microcontroller unit for the on-board computations. Therefore, traditional computer vision and control algorithms are too computationally expensive to be executed on board these palm-sized robots, and we are forced to rely on artificial intelligence to trade off accuracy in favor of lightweight pipelines for autonomous tasks. However, relying on deep learning exposes us to the problem of generalization since the deployment scenario of a convolutional neural network (CNN) is often composed by different visual cues and different features from those learned during training, leading to poor inference performances. Our objective is to develop and deploy and adaptation algorithm, based on the concept of latent replays, that would allow us to fine-tune a CNN to work in new and diverse deployment scenarios. To do so we start from an existing model for visual human pose estimation, called PULPFrontnet, which is used to identify the pose of a human subject in space through its 4 output variables, and we present the design of our novel adaptation algorithm, which features automatic data gathering and labeling and on-device deployment. We therefore showcase the ability of our algorithm to adapt PULP-Frontnet to new deployment scenarios, improving the R2 scores of the four network outputs, with respect to an unknown environment, from approximately [−0.2, 0.4, 0.0,−0.7] to [0.25, 0.45, 0.2, 0.1]. Finally we demonstrate how it is possible to fine-tune our neural network in real time (i.e., under 76 seconds), using the target parallel ultra-low power GAP 8 System-on-Chip on board the nano-drone, and we show how all adaptation operations can take place using less than 2mWh of energy, a small fraction of the available battery power.

Geographic Data Warehouses (GDW) are one of the main technologies used in decision-making processes and spatial analysis, and the literature proposes several conceptual and logical data models for GDW. However, little effort has been focused on studying how spatial data redundancy affects SOLAP (Spatial On-Line Analytical Processing) query performance over GDW. In this paper, we investigate this issue. Firstly, we compare redundant and non-redundant GDW schemas and conclude that redundancy is related to high performance losses. We also analyze the issue of indexing, aiming at improving SOLAP query performance on a redundant GDW. Comparisons of the SB-index approach, the star-join aided by R-tree and the star-join aided by GiST indicate that the SB-index significantly improves the elapsed time in query processing from 25% up to 99% with regard to SOLAP queries defined over the spatial predicates of intersection, enclosure and containment and applied to roll-up and drill-down operations. We also investigate the impact of the increase in data volume on the performance. The increase did not impair the performance of the SB-index, which highly improved the elapsed time in query processing. Performance tests also show that the SB-index is far more compact than the star-join, requiring only a small fraction of at most 0.20% of the volume. Moreover, we propose a specific enhancement of the SB-index to deal with spatial data redundancy. This enhancement improved performance from 80 to 91% for redundant GDW schemas.

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) plays an important role in the life cycle of the Trypanosoma cruzi, and an immobilized enzyme reactor (IMER) has been developed for use in the on-line screening for GAPDH inhibitors. An IMER containing human GAPDH has been previously reported; however, these conditions produced a T. cruzi GAPDH-IMER with poor activity and stability. The factors affecting the stability of the human and T. cruzi GAPDHs in the immobilization process and the influence of pH and buffer type on the stability and activity of the IMERs have been investigated. The resulting T. cruzi GAPDH-IMER was coupled to an analytical octyl column, which was used to achieve chromatographic separation of NAD+ from NADH. The production of NADH stimulated by D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate was used to investigate the activity and kinetic parameters of the immobilized T. cruzi GAPDH. The Michaelis-Menten constant (K-m) values determined for D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and NAD(+) were K-m = 0.5 +/- 0.05 mM and 0.648 +/- 0.08 mM, respectively, which were consistent with the values obtained using the non-immobilized enzyme.

We introduce the Coupled Aerosol and Tracer Transport model to the Brazilian developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (CATT-BRAMS). CATT-BRAMS is an on-line transport model fully consistent with the simulated atmospheric dynamics. Emission sources from biomass burning and urban-industrial-vehicular activities for trace gases and from biomass burning aerosol particles are obtained from several published datasets and remote sensing information. The tracer and aerosol mass concentration prognostics include the effects of sub-grid scale turbulence in the planetary boundary layer, convective transport by shallow and deep moist convection, wet and dry deposition, and plume rise associated with vegetation fires in addition to the grid scale transport. The radiation parameterization takes into account the interaction between the simulated biomass burning aerosol particles and short and long wave radiation. The atmospheric model BRAMS is based on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS), with several improvements associated with cumulus convection representation, soil moisture initialization and surface scheme tuned for the tropics, among others. In this paper the CATT-BRAMS model is used to simulate carbon monoxide and particulate material (PM(2.5)) surface fluxes and atmospheric transport during the 2002 LBA field campaigns, conducted during the transition from the dry to wet season in the southwest Amazon Basin. Model evaluation is addressed with comparisons between model results and near surface, radiosondes and airborne measurements performed during the field campaign, as well as remote sensing derived products. We show the matching of emissions strengths to observed carbon monoxide in the LBA campaign. A relatively good comparison to the MOPITT data, in spite of the fact that MOPITT a priori assumptions imply several difficulties, is also obtained.

An (n, d)-expander is a graph G = (V, E) such that for every X subset of V with vertical bar X vertical bar <= 2n - 2 we have vertical bar Gamma(G)(X) vertical bar >= (d + 1) vertical bar X vertical bar. A tree T is small if it has at most n vertices and has maximum degree at most d. Friedman and Pippenger (1987) proved that any ( n; d)- expander contains every small tree. However, their elegant proof does not seem to yield an efficient algorithm for obtaining the tree. In this paper, we give an alternative result that does admit a polynomial time algorithm for finding the immersion of any small tree in subgraphs G of (N, D, lambda)-graphs Lambda, as long as G contains a positive fraction of the edges of Lambda and lambda/D is small enough. In several applications of the Friedman-Pippenger theorem, including the ones in the original paper of those authors, the (n, d)-expander G is a subgraph of an (N, D, lambda)-graph as above. Therefore, our result suffices to provide efficient algorithms for such previously non-constructive applications. As an example, we discuss a recent result of Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov (2007) concerning embedding nearly spanning bounded degree trees, the proof of which makes use of the Friedman-Pippenger theorem. We shall also show a construction inspired on Wigderson-Zuckerman expander graphs for which any sufficiently dense subgraph contains all trees of sizes and maximum degrees achieving essentially optimal parameters. Our algorithmic approach is based on a reduction of the tree embedding problem to a certain on-line matching problem for bipartite graphs, solved by Aggarwal et al. (1996).

There is little empirical data about the impact of digital inclusion on cognition among older adults. This paper aimed at investigating the effects of a digital inclusion program in the cognitive performance of older individuals who participated in a computer learning workshop named ""Idosos On-Line`` (Elderly Online). Forty-two aged individuals participated in the research study: 22 completed the computer training workshop and 20 constituted the control group. All subjects answered a sociodemographic questionnaire and completed the Addenbrooke`s cognitive examination, revised (ACE-R), which examines five cognitive domains: orientation and attention, memory, verbal fluency, language, and visuo-spatial skills. It was noted that the experimental group`s cognitive performance significantly improved after the program, particularly in the language and memory domains, when compared to the control group. These findings suggest that the acquisition of new knowledge and the use of a new tool, that makes it possible to access the Internet, may bring gains to cognition. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. This work deals with neural network (NN)-based gait pattern adaptation algorithms for an active lower-limb orthosis. Stable trajectories with different walking speeds are generated during an optimization process considering the zero-moment point (ZMP) criterion and the inverse dynamic of the orthosis-patient model. Additionally, a set of NNs is used to decrease the time-consuming analytical computation of the model and ZMP. The first NN approximates the inverse dynamics including the ZMP computation, while the second NN works in the optimization procedure, giving an adapted desired trajectory according to orthosis-patient interaction. This trajectory adaptation is added directly to the trajectory generator, also reproduced by a set of NNs. With this strategy, it is possible to adapt the trajectory during the walking cycle in an on-line procedure, instead of changing the trajectory parameter after each step. The dynamic model of the actual exoskeleton, with interaction forces included, is used to generate simulation results. Also, an experimental test is performed with an active ankle-foot orthosis, where the dynamic variables of this joint are replaced in the simulator by actual values provided by the device. There is now considerable evidence to suggest that non-demented people with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience difficulties using the morphosyntactic aspects of language. It remains unclear, however, at precisely which point in the processing of morphosyntax, these difficulties emerge. The major objective of the present study was to examine the impact of PD on the processes involved in accessing morphosyntactic information in the lexicon. Nineteen people with PD and 19 matched control subjects participated in the study which employed on-line word recognition tasks to examine morphosyntactic priming for local grammatical dependencies that occur both within (e.g. is going) and across (e.g. she gives) phrasal boundaries (Experiments 1 and 2, respectively). The control group evidenced robust morphosyntactic priming effects that were consistent with the involvement of both pre- (Experiment 1) and post-lexical (Experiment 2) processing routines. Whilst the participants with PD also recorded priming for dependencies within phrasal boundaries (Experiment 1), priming effects were observed over an abnormally brief time course. Further, in contrast to the controls, the PD group failed to record morphosyntactic priming for constructions that crossed phrasal boundaries (Experiment 2). The results demonstrate that attentionally mediated mechanisms operating at both the pre- and post-lexical stages of processing are able to contribute to morphosyntactic priming effects. In addition, the findings support the notion that, whilst people with PD are able to access morphosyntactic information in a normal manner, the time frame in which this information remains available for processing is altered. Deficits may also be experienced at the post-lexical integrational stage of processing.
