Acidification of an isopropanol solution containing mixtures of [Ti(OPri)(4)] and [W(OEt)(5)] produced solutions from which various TiO2, WO3 and TiO2/WO3 thin films could be obtained by dip coating and annealing. The films were analysed by X-ray diffraction, SEM/EDAX, Raman, electronic spectra, contact angle and photoactivity with respect to destruction of an over layer of stearic acid. The TiO2/WO3 films were shown to be mixtures of two phases TiO2 and WO3 rather than a solid solution TixWyO2. The 2% tungsten oxide doped titania films were shown to be the most effective photocatalysts. All of the TiO2 and TiO2/WO3 films showed light induced superhydrophillicity. A general method of preparation of thin-film sensors for O-2, incorporating the dye ion-pair tris(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline) rutheninm(II) ditetraphenylborate, in a variety of different thin film polymer/plasticizer matrices is described, The sensitivity of the sensor depends upon the nature of the polymer matrix and plasticizer, A detailed study of one of these systems utilising the polymer poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA, is reported. The sensitivity of this O-2 sensor depends markedly upon the plasticizer concentration and is largely independent of temperature (24,5-52.5 degrees C) and age (up to 30 d), When exposed to an alternating atmosphere of O-2 and N-2, a typical oxygen film sensor in PMMA exhibits a 0-90% response and recovery time of 0.4 and 4.5 s, respectively.

Cyanobacteria deteriorate the water quality and are responsible for emerging outbreaks and epidemics causing harmful diseases in Humans and animals because of their toxins. Microcystin-LR (MCT) is one of the most relevant cyanotoxin, being the most widely studied hepatotoxin. For safety purposes, the World Health Organization recommends a maximum value of 1 μg L−1 of MCT in drinking water. Therefore, there is a great demand for remote and real-time sensing techniques to detect and quantify MCT. In this work a Fabry–Pérot sensing probe based on an optical fibre tip coated with a MCT selective thin film is presented. The membranes were developed by imprinting MCT in a sol–gel matrix that was applied over the tip of the fibre by dip coating. The imprinting effect was obtained by curing the sol–gel membrane, prepared with (3-aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane (APTMS), diphenyl-dimethoxysilane (DPDMS), tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), in the presence of MCT. The imprinting effect was tested by preparing a similar membrane without template. In general, the fibre Fabry–Pérot with a Molecular Imprinted Polymer (MIP) sensor showed low thermal effect, thus avoiding the need of temperature control in field applications. It presented a linear response to MCT concentration within 0.3–1.4 μg L−1 with a sensitivity of −12.4 ± 0.7 nm L μg−1. The corresponding Non-Imprinted Polymer (NIP) displayed linear behaviour for the same MCT concentration range, but with much less sensitivity, of −5.9 ± 0.2 nm L μg−1. The method shows excellent selectivity for MCT against other species co-existing with the analyte in environmental waters. It was successfully applied to the determination of MCT in contaminated samples. The main advantages of the proposed optical sensor include high sensitivity and specificity, low-cost, robustness, easy preparation and preservation.

This proposed thesis is entitled “Plasma Polymerised Organic Thin Films: A study on the Structural, Electrical, and Nonlinear Optical Properties for Possible Applications. Polymers and polymer based materials find enormous applications in the realm of electronics and optoelectronics. They are employed as both active and passive components in making various devices. Enormous research activities are going on in this area for the last three decades or so, and many useful contributions are made quite accidentally. Conducting polymers is such a discovery, and eversince the discovery of conducting polyacetylene, a new branch of science itself has emerged in the form of synthetic metals. Conducting polymers are useful materials for many applications like polymer displays, high density data storage, polymer FETs, polymer LEDs, photo voltaic devices and electrochemical cells. With the emergence of molecular electronics and its potential in finding useful applications, organic thin films are receiving an unusual attention by scientists and engineers alike. This is evident from the vast literature pertaining to this field appearing in various journals. Recently, computer aided design of organic molecules have added further impetus to the ongoing research activities in this area. Polymers, especially, conducting polymers can be prepared both in the bulk and in the thinfilm form. However, many applications necessitate that they are grown in the thin film form either as free standing or on appropriate substrates. As far as their bulk counterparts are concerned, they can be prepared by various polymerisation techniques such as chemical routes and electrochemical means. A survey of the literature reveals that polymers like polyaniline, polypyrrole, polythiophene, have been investigated with a view to studying their structural electrical and optical properties. Among the various alternate techniques employed for the preparation of polymer thin films, the method of plasma polymerisation needs special attention in this context. The technique of plasma polymerisation is an inexpensive method and often requires very less infra structure. This method includes the employment of ac, rf, dc, microwave and pulsed sources. They produce pinhole free homogeneous films on appropriate substrates under controlled conditions. In conventional plasma polymerisation set up, the monomer is fed into an evacuated chamber and an ac/rf/dc/ w/pulsed discharge is created which enables the monomer species to dissociate, leading to the formation of polymer thin films. However, it has been found that the structure and hence the properties exhibited by plasma polymerized thin films are quite different from that of their counterparts produced by other thin film preparation techniques such as electrochemical deposition or spin coating. The properties of these thin films can be tuned only if the interrelationship between the structure and other properties are understood from a fundamental point of view. So very often, a through evaluation of the various properties is a pre-requisite for tailoring the properties of the thin films for applications. It has been found that conjugation is a necessary condition for enhancing the conductivity of polymer thin films. RF technique of plasma polymerisation is an excellent tool to induce conjugation and this modifies the electrical properties too. Both oxidative and reductive doping can be employed to modify the electrical properties of the polymer thin films for various applications. This is where organic thin films based on polymers scored over inorganic thin films, where in large area devices can be fabricated with organic semiconductors which is difficult to achieve by inorganic materials. For such applications, a variety of polymers have been synthesized such as polyaniline, polythiophene, polypyrrole etc. There are newer polymers added to this family every now and then. There are many virgin areas where plasma polymers are yet to make a foray namely low-k dielectrics or as potential nonlinear optical materials such as optical limiters. There are also many materials which are not been prepared by the method of plasma polymerisation. Some of the materials which are not been dealt with are phenyl hydrazine and tea tree oil. The advantage of employing organic extracts like tea tree oil monomers as precursors for making plasma polymers is that there can be value addition to the already existing uses and possibility exists in converting them to electronic grade materials, especially semiconductors and optically active materials for photonic applications. One of the major motivations of this study is to synthesize plasma polymer thin films based on aniline, phenyl hydrazine, pyrrole, tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil by employing both rf and ac plasma polymerisation techniques. This will be carried out with the objective of growing thin films on various substrates such as glass, quartz and indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass. There are various properties namely structural, electrical, dielectric permittivity, nonlinear optical properties which are to be evaluated to establish the relationship with the structure and the other properties. Special emphasis will be laid in evaluating the optical parameters like refractive index (n), extinction coefficient (k), the real and imaginary components of dielectric constant and the optical transition energies of the polymer thin films from the spectroscopic ellipsometric studies. Apart from evaluating these physical constants, it is also possible to predict whether a material exhibit nonlinear optical properties by ellipsometric investigations. So further studies using open aperture z-scan technique in order to evaluate the nonlinear optical properties of a few selected samples which are potential nonlinear optical materials is another objective of the present study. It will be another endeavour to offer an appropriate explanation for the nonlinear optical properties displayed by these films. Doping of plasma polymers is found to modify both the electrical conductivity and optical properties. Iodine is found to modify the properties of the polymer thin films. However insitu iodine doping is tricky and the film often looses its stability because of the escape of iodine. An appropriate insitu technique of doping will be developed to dope iodine in to the plasma polymerized thin films. Doping of polymer thin films with iodine results in improved and modified optical and electrical properties. However it requires tools like FTIR and UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy to elucidate the structural and optical modifications imparted to the polymer films. This will be attempted here to establish the role of iodine in the modification of the properties exhibited by the films

Among the large number of photothcrmal techniques available, photoacoustics assumes a very significant place because of its essential simplicity and the variety of applications it finds in science and technology. The photoacoustic (PA) effect is the generation of an acoustic signal when a sample, kept inside an enclosed volume, is irradiated by an intensity modulated beam of radiation. The radiation absorbed by the sample is converted into thermal waves by nonradiative de-excitation processes. The propagating thermal waves cause a corresponding expansion and contraction of the gas medium surrounding the sample, which in tum can be detected as sound waves by a sensitive microphone. These sound waves have the same frequency as the initial modulation frequency of light. Lock-in detection method enables one to have a sufficiently high signal to noise ratio for the detected signal. The PA signal amplitude depends on the optical absorption coefficient of the sample and its thermal properties. The PA signal phase is a function of the thermal diffusivity of the sample.Measurement of the PA amplitude and phase enables one to get valuable information about the thermal and optical properties of the sample. Since the PA signal depends on the optical and thennal properties of the sample, their variation will get reflected in the PA signal. Therefore, if the PA signal is collected from various points on a sample surface it will give a profile of the variations in the optical/thennal properties across the sample surface. Since the optical and thermal properties are affected by the presence of defects, interfaces, change of material etc. these will get reflected in the PA signal. By varying the modulation frequency, we can get information about the subsurface features also. This is the basic principle of PA imaging or PA depth profiling. It is a quickly expanding field with potential applications in thin film technology, chemical engineering, biology, medical diagnosis etc. Since it is a non-destructive method, PA imaging has added advantages over some of the other imaging techniques. A major part of the work presented in this thesis is concemed with the development of a PA imaging setup that can be used to detect the presence of surface and subsmface defects in solid samples.Determination of thermal transport properties such as thermal diffusivity, effusivity, conductivity and heat capacity of materials is another application of photothennal effect. There are various methods, depending on the nature of the sample, to determine these properties. However, there are only a few methods developed to determine all these properties simultaneously. Even though a few techniques to determine the above thermal properties individually for a coating can be found in literature, no technique is available for the simultaneous measurement of these parameters for a coating. We have developed a scanning photoacoustic technique that can be used to determine all the above thermal transport properties simultaneously in the case of opaque coatings such as paints. Another work that we have presented in this thesis is the determination of thermal effusivity of many bulk solids by a scanning photoacoustic technique. This is one of the very few methods developed to determine thermal effiisivity directly.

Layer-by-layer (LbL) films from K(2)Nb(6)O(17)(2-) and polyallylamine (PAH) and dip-coating films of H(2)K(2)Nb(6)O(17) were prepared on a fluorine-doped tin-oxide (FTO)-coated glass. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) images were carried out for morphological characterization of both materials. The real surface area and the roughness factor were determined on the basis of pseudocapacitive processes involved in the electroreduction/electrooxidation of gold layers deposited on these films. Next, lithium ion insertion into these materials was examined by means of electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical measurements. More specifically, cyclic voltammetry and current pulses under visible light beams were used to investigate mass transport and chromogenic properties. The lithium ion diffusion coefficient (D(Li)) within the LbL matrix is significantly higher than that within the dip-coating film, ensuring high storage capacity of lithium ions in the self-assembled electrode. Contrary to the LbL film, the potentiodynamic profile of absorbance change (Delta A) as a function of time is not similar to that obtained in the case of current density for the dip-coating film. Aiming at analyzing the rate of the coloration front associated with lithium ion diffusion, a spectroelectrochemical method based on the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) was employed so as to determine the ""optical"" diffusion coefficient (D(op)). In the dip-coating film, the method employed here revealed that the lithium ion rate is higher in diffusion pathways formed from K(2)Nb(6)O(17)(2-) sites that contribute more significantly to Delta A. Meanwhile, the presence of PAH contributed to the increased ionic mobility in diffusion pathways in the LbL film, with low contribution to the electrochromic efficiency. These results aided a better understanding of the potentiodynamic profile of the temporal change of absorbance and current density during the insertion/deinsertion of lithium ions into the electrochromic materials.

The deposition and characterization of Se films doped with Pb underpotentially deposited (UPD) ad-atoms was studied in this work. The employed experimental techniques were cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. The initial deposition of Se film by chronoamperometry yielded a thin film composed of approximately 700 layers. The Pb UPD on Se was achieved by chronoamperometry in a potential value previously determined in voltammetric experiments. This deposition yielded a deposition charge of approximately 7.5% of the total one. The film resistance altered from 320 Omega cm(2) for Se to 65 Omega cm(2) for the Se/Pb one. Flat band potential values and number of acceptors and donors were also calculated for both films and the values obtained were + 0.95 and -0.51 V for Se and Se/Pb, respectively. The Se coating presented 1.2 x 10(17) cm(3) acceptors while the Se/Pb one presented 3.2 x 10(17) cm(3) donors. The band gap values for both films were 2.4 eV and 1.9 eV, correspondingly. In the present work we use a plasma jet system with a hollow cathode to deposit thin TiO2 films on silicon substrates as alternative at sol-gel, PECVD, dip-coating e magnetron sputtering techniques. The cylindrical cathode, made from pure titanium, can be negatively polarized between 0 e 1200 V and supports an electrical current of up to 1 A. An Ar/O2 mixture, with a total flux of 20 sccm and an O2 percentage ranging between 0 and 30%, is passed through a cylindrical hole machined in the cathode. The plasma parameters and your influence on the properties of deposited TiO2 films and their deposition rate was studied. When discharge occurs, titanium atoms are sputtered/evaporated. They are transported by the jet and deposited on the Si substrates located on the substrate holder facing the plasma jet system at a distance ranging between10 and 50 mm from the cathode. The working pressure was 10-3 mbar and the deposition time was 10 -60 min. Deposited films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy to check the film uniformity and morphology and by X-ray diffraction to analyze qualitatively the phases present. Also it is presented the new dispositive denominate ionizing cage, derived from the active screen plasma nitriding (ASPN), but based in hollow cathode effect, recently developed. In this process, the sample was involved in a cage, in which the cathodic potential was applied. The samples were placed on an insulator substrate holder, remaining in a floating potential, and then it was treated in reactive plasma in hollow cathode regime. Moreover, the edge effect was completely eliminated, since the plasma was formed on the cage and not directly onto the samples and uniformity layer was getting in all sampl

This work makes use of the Pechini process for synthesis of the solutions and the dip-coating process for the addition of zirconium oxide films pure and doped cerium metal substrates. The metals with ceramic substrates were subjected to severe conditions of salinity. The x-ray fluorescence of the substrate showed a great diversity of chemical elements. The x-ray diffraction of the samples showed the phase of iron substrate because the thickness of nano-thin film. Tests using an LPR probe showed that the film presents with zirconia corrosion independent of film thickness. The substrates of ZrO2-doped ceria showed low chemical attack of the salt in films with less than 15 dives. The results imply that ultrathin films are shown in protecting metallic substrates

Lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) thin films with stoichiometry (9/65/35) were prepared by a dip-coating process using a polymeric organic solution. The solution viscosity was adjusted in the range of 15-56 cP. Silicon (100) substrates were previously cleaned and then immersed in the solution. The withdrawal speed of substrate from the solution was adjusted within a range of 5 to 20 mm/min. The coated substrates were thermally treated in the 450-700 degreesC temperature range. Surface roughness and crystallization of these films are strongly dependent on the annealing conditions. Infrared and X-ray diffraction data for PLZT powders heat-treated at 650 degreesC for 3 h show that the material is free of carbonate phases and crystalline. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Ferroelectric SrBi4Ti4O15 thin films were successfully prepared on a Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrate for the first time by spin coating, using the polymeric precursor method. X-ray diffraction patterns of the films indicate that they are polycrystalline in nature. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses showed that the surface of these films is smooth, dense and crack-free with low surface roughness (6.4 nm). At room temperature and at a frequency of 1 MHz, the dielectric constant and the dissipation factor were, respectively, 150 and 0.022. The C-V characteristics of perovskite thin film prepared at low temperature show normal ferrolectric behaviour. The remanent polarization and coercive field for the films deposited were 5.4 mu C/cm(2) and 8 5 kV/cm, respectively. All the capacitors showed good polarization fatigue characteristics at least up to 1 x 10(10) bipolar pulse cycles indicating that SrBi4Ti4O15 thin films can be a promising material for use in nonvolatile memories. These films were obtained by dip coating. Parameters like dislocation velocity; number of deposits, suspension concentration, and number of deposits followed or not by heat treatment between each deposit and calcination temperature were evaluated for establishing the best homogeneity. The obtained films were characterized in terms of their morphology, optical quality and photoluminescence by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis absorption spectrophotometry and luminescence spectroscopy, respectively. The morphologic and luminescent characteristics showed dip coating as good laboratory technique for development of thin films for optical applications.
