The nonlinear essence of gravitational waves

A critical review of gravitational wave theory is made. It is pointed out that the usual linear approach to the gravitational wave theory is neither conceptually consistent nor mathematically justified. Relying upon that analysis it is argued that-analogously to a Yang-Mills propagating field, which must be nonlinear to carry its gauge charge-a gravitational wave must necessarily be nonlinear to transport its own charge-that is, energy-momentum.

Estimativa de la edad y peso a la primera monta de novillas en el Pantanal brasileño

Esto trabajo tuvo como objetivo estimar la edad y peso a la primera monta de novillas de las razas Nelore (N), Pantaneira (P) y Mestizas Pantaneira x Nelore (PxN). Se utilizó un total de 98 hembras, siendo 51, 24 y 23 pertenecientes a las razas N, P y PxN, respectivamente. El análisis estadístico de los datos no reveló diferencia significativa (P = 0,3595) para el peso a la primera monta entre las razas estudiadas. El análisis de varianza no reveló diferencia significativa (P = 0,307) entre las edades a la primera monta entre razas, mostrando 3,5, 3,4 y 3,2 años para las novillas P, N y ½PxN, respectivamente.

A proposta de reabilitação psicossocial de Saraceno: um modelo de auto-organização?

Discute-se a teoria da Reabilitação Psicossocial, proposta por Benedetto Saraceno, tomando como referencial a teoria de Sistemas Auto-Organizados, elaborada, entre outros, por Michel Debrun. Observa-se que a proposta de Saraceno satisfaz diversos aspectos do processo de auto-organização, porém não chega a se constituir plenamente como tal. A partir dessa reflexão, pode-se entender melhor algumas das dificuldades da prática de reabilitação na área de Saúde Mental.

Desempenho da alface em cultivo orgânico com e sem cobertura morta e diferentes lâminas d'água

O experimento foi conduzido no período de 27/05/2006 a 02/08/2006 no SIPA (Sistema Integrado de Produção Agroecológica), localizado no município de Seropédica-RJ. Nesse trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho da cultura da alface (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivada sob diferentes lâminas de irrigação em um solo sem e com cobertura de palhada da leguminosa gliricídia. Foram conduzidos dois experimentos simultâneos, utilizando o delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, em ambos os experimentos, nos quais foram aplicadas 5 lâminas de irrigação, correspondendo a 25, 50, 80, 100, 115 % da evapotranspiração da cultura (ETc), sendo a produção final avaliada por meio da determinação da massa fresca, área foliar e número de folhas. Até o nível de 100% ETc, todas as variáveis analisadas tiveram seus valores aumentados, e para o nível de 115%, houve um decrescimento das mesmas. Na produção de massa fresca total, o sistema de cultivo com utilização de cobertura morta foi superior ao sem cobertura não diferenciando estatisticamente ao nível de 5 % probabilidade pelo teste F somente nas lâminas de 25 e 115% ETc.

RAPID analysis reveals genetic variability among sexual and apomictic Paspalum dilatatum poiret biotypes

Paspalum dilatatum is a valuable forage grass in the subtropics. This species consists of several sexual (tetraploid) and apomict (penta- and hexaploid) biotypes. It has been proposed that the presence of a genome of unknown origin, the X genome, is responsible for apomixis in penta- and hexaploid biotypes. Here we evaluated the utility of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers for discriminating sexual and apomictic P dilatatum biotypes. DNA samples from nine accessions, including P. intermedium, P. juergensh, and P dilatatum (ssp. flavescens, and the common and Uruguayan biotypes) were analyzed with 86 RAPID primers. Three hundred sixty-two fragments were scored and genetic similarity estimates revealed that the penta- and hexaploid biotypes were highly similar (S,, greater than or equal to 0.913). Forty RAPDs were unique to the penta- and hexaploid biotypes. Overall RAPID markers were useful for assessing genetic variation among closely related P dilatatum genotypes as well as generating putative X genome markers.

Droplet counter-current chromatography of indole alkaloids from Tabernaemontana hilariana

This paper reports the separation of the indole alkaloids from the benzene extract of the root barks of Tabernaemontana hilariana (Apocynaceae). The crude alkaloid fraction was fractionated by droplet counter-current chromatography using a low polarity mixture (hexane:ethyl acetate:ethanol:water). Nine indole alkaloids (3-hydroxycoronaridine, coronaridine, voacangine, 3-(2-oxopropyl) coronaridine, voacangine hydroxyindolenine, ibogamine, voacangine pseudoindoxyl, coronaridine pseudoindoxyl and tabernanthine) were identified using thin laver chromatography gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Quantitative determination of maitenin and 22 beta-hydroxymaitenin in callus of Maytenus aquifolium (Celastraceae) by reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography

Explants of Maytenus aquifolium were induced to form callus and, subsequently, suspension cultures. The isolation of natural products from callus led to the identification of the cytotoxic triterpene quinonemethides, maitenin (1) and 22 beta-hydroxymaitenin (2), A rapid, sensitive and reliable reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography method was developed using a Cls column and isocratic elution for the determination of 1 and 2, the elaborated method gave well-resolved peaks for these compounds with good detection response and linearity in the range of 0.08-72.0 mu g. Lignoids in seedlings of Virola sebifera

Quantitative analysis carried out by high performance liquid chromatography indicated the accumulation of a major secondary compound in seedlings of Virola sebifera which was isolated and identified as the lignan hydroxy-otobain. This lignan occurs only in trace amounts in the seeds, where cyclolignans (aryltetralones) are by far the major components. In addition to hydroxy-otobain, only hydroxy-aryltetralones were detected in the seedlings, indicating a selective process in the translocation of secondary compounds. Transmission network expansion planning considering uncertainty in demand

This paper presents two mathematical models and one methodology to solve a transmission network expansion planning problem considering uncertainty in demand. The first model analyzed the uncertainty in the system as a whole; then, this model considers the uncertainty in the total demand of the power system. The second one analyzed the uncertainty in each load bus individually. The methodology used to solve the problem, finds the optimal transmission network expansion plan that allows the power system to operate adequately in an environment with uncertainty. The models presented are solved using a specialized genetic algorithm. The results obtained for several known systems from literature show that cheaper plans can be found satisfying the uncertainty in demand.

Effect of intracerebroventricular injection of ramipril on the drinking response caused by injection of noradrenaline into the third ventricle

We studied the effect of ramipril injected into the third ventricle (3rdV) on the control of water intake induced by injection of noradrenaline into the 3rdV of adult male Holtzman rats (250-300 g) implanted with a chronic stainless steel cannula into the 3rdV. The injection volume was always 1 mu l and was injected over a period of 30-60 sec. Control animals were injected with 0.15 M NaCl. After the injection of isotonic saline (control, 0.15 M NaCl) into the 3rdV, water ingestion was 0.3 +/- 0.1 ml/h. Ramipril (1 mu g/mu l) injected into the 3rdV prior to isotonic saline produced no changes in water ingestion (0.4 +/- 0.2 ml/h). The injection of noradrenaline (40 nmol/mu l) after isotonic saline induced an increase in water intake (3.0 +/- 1.1 ml/h). The prior injection of ramipril decreased this ingestion to 1.8 +/- 0.3 ml/h. These data show that the inhibition of converting enzyme in the brain reduces the water intake induced by catecholaminergic stimulation. We conclude that the brain is able to transform the prodrug ramipril into the active drug ramiprilat.

Barrier penetration for supersymmetric shape-invariant potentials

Exact reflection and transmission coefficients for supersymmetric shape-invariant potentials barriers are calculated by an analytical continuation of the asymptotic wavefunctions obtained via the introduction of new generalized ladder operators. The general form of the wavefunction is obtained by the use of the F(-infinity, +infinity)-matrix formalism of Froman and Froman which is related to the evolution of asymptotic wavefunction coefficients.
